Book: Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 44
Author: Mizuho Kusanagi
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

Well, now, I am caught up on the volumes and will have to read the chapters instead. That means it is going to be a while before I post a review for a volume.

I am going to try to keep my review as vague as possible, but since this is the forty-fourth volume in a series, there may be spoilers for earlier volumes.

These last couple of volumes have been very difficult to get through. It has nothing to do with the writing or the plot. It has to do with the emotional toll that these volumes have been leaving. Things are happening and it’s hard. We see characters question things and make very difficult choices. Some of them are somewhat selfish, but they are understandable. The fact that we have gotten to know these characters this way and for this long, what is happening is hard. (Granted, I have not been reading this for ten-plus years. I cannot imagine what OG fans think.)

The impact the story has is great. I know I have talked about this in so many reviews, but the character work is great. The impact that events have and the time we have gotten to know these characters have made me get this deep bond with them. While the plot is good, it is the characters that truly drive this series. After all, without this bond, the story would not have the impact that it has. This is why I think so highly of this series.

I am sad that I am now caught up on the volumes and now have to go chapter by chapter. I have never read manga chapter by chapter, so this will be a new experience for me. I don’t even know what the writing schedule is either.

4.5✨

"This is where the hungry bunch splits up." 😭😭

These past few volumes have been so emotionally taxing. Mizuho Kusanagi really excels at their character work more than a lot of mangaka I've read.

Ces personnages me manqueront assurément.

When I say I will sob when this finishes I mean I will sob when this manga series finishes. This manga series and anime series has carried me through so much and this volume felt with some heavy themes and I was crying a little bit here and there. This story is amazing, and even over 15 years later I still love this story. I highly recommend for anyone to read this series.

"Zeno is very good at forgetting people he'll never meet again. He doesn't remember. He'll forget you...and these dragon warriors too." 😭💔

Zeno's plan is crazy...but it didn't work. Unless he figured out what exactly can kill him...when he ominously looked over his shoulder at something. But what?

Yona told Hak she loved him...not once, not twice, not even thrice...but four times! She said "I love you" four times in a row! If this isn't love, then I don't know what is.

This is the darkest arc of Yona yet. I'm all here for it, so long as it ends on a positive note. I have high hopes that it'll end positively...somehow.

Nooooooooo Zeno!!! 😭 the Happy Hungry Bunch can NEVER split up! How could he say that!?! Zeno has been through a lot… I’m NOT okay!

My favorite part was Yona telling Hak “I love you.” 🥰 and then Hak was thinking “I wanna hear this forever but why are you saying it now?” - turns the page - IM GONNA DIE ARENT I??? 😂 I can’t that was so good I died!!

I really enjoyed this volume, SO MANY EMOTIONS. Glad I waited a bit to read it because I cannot handle this cliffhanger. Now there’s just one more month to wait for vol 45

This is the second time i pick up this manga, and the second time i reach the end and just waiting for the next volume to release. Last time i read this manga was 1.5y ago...

I came by this manga through the anime. However, the anime ended abruptly without a second season in sight. I wish the anime creators picked up a second season but at least their ending got me started on the mangas, and ohboy am i addicted!

It's a historical fantasy/romance, about a red-haired princess, Yona. She grew up in the palace of Kouka, shielded from world outside the walls, rarely allowed to set a foot outside the royal ground. She led quite a privileged life indoors, although somewhat lonely. Suddenly, upon witnessing the murder of her king-father by the hands of one of her closest friends, she is chased out of her castle accompanied by her bodyguard (and childhood-friend) Hak. Those who betrayed the late king set out for their blood, and Yona realizes that in order to protect those she cares for, she needs to build up her strength and pick up the very weapons that her king-father used to detest. While on the run, she and Hak come across a priest who puts them on the path to find the four legendary dragons. 2000 years ago, the legendary dragons are said to have taken human forms in order to love and serve the Crimson king. Mainly she seeks out the dragons to ask for their protection, and it is revealed that she is the reincarnation of the Crimson king.

So, what happens next? Rebellion, war and revenge? Maybe, maybe not.

I really like this manga, love "watching" Yona grow into this strong yet still pure person. Fantastic illustrations and a good dose of humor and action-scenes. Unrequited love, love? Great storyline so far. Can't wait for more.

Beware of the SPOILERS in this review!

Well, time to catch up on volumes of Yona I guess. I’m reading these chapters week to week so this review will be written on the basis of notes that I made months ago (sorry if everything will seem a bit confusing but I just can’t not read the chapters as soon as they come out).

So… I have to say I was pretty angry when reading this and the cause for it is Zeno. I mean I get that this dude just wants to die after being sad and alone for so long but what he does is a bit selfish. Sure, the dragons all suffer but that doesn’t mean you can just kill them you dipshit. I know they aren’t exactly dead but still. I loved how he couldn’t actually kill himself even with that sword and now hopefully Hak and Yona will convince this kid to not try to kill himself anymore.

Anyway, we get quite a lot of Hak and Yona in this volume which we always appreciate. I mean, they are so cute together come on. I loved how my girl was reassuring Hak when he was about to lose it because of Zeno’s actions. And then when supported each other because they were both on the verge of a breakdown and my girl Yona told Hak that she loves him… golden. They’re so cute and I would die for them.

There is also some talk about Suwon dying and I love how everyone just concluded that Yona will be the one to take the throne after his death. It’s just a great turn of events.

Anyway, I’m giving this volume 5 stars because it was great and very entertaining. I hope this series stays this good until the end which is probably near.

“Whether they’re gods or not, if they are going to keep toying with you , I will make them fall from the heavens!”

“Your four dragons and our Zeno. Don’t bring an end to them now. If you can’t shoulder it any longer, I will take it to the next world. I want to be reunited with everyone again.” “Please, go get him”

ZENO! I understand what he is doing, but this is not the time. I feel terrible for him because he just wants to be in heaven with the dragons, but it’s not his place to just take them.

Chapter 257 deserves all the awards. It was absolutely breathtaking. The panels between Yona and the Crimson King were amazing. I cried. It’s definitely one of my favorite parts of the whole series.

The fact that the only way he can die is if he is killed by the crimson king is cruel. I hated seeing Zeno target Hak and fighting with Yona. It so powerful to see Yona angering and defying the Gods. I have no idea what she is going to do.

Thoughts while reading
- WHAT IS HE DOING
- “This is where the hungry bunch splits up.” NOOOO
- BRO IM GOING TO KILL HIM
- Bro pls just let that be a dream
- YES SHE SAID I LOVE YOU AHHH
- I LOVE THAT HE TURNED RED
- YES RIRI! Keep him busy
- YO NO WAY? IM GOING TO CRY
- Speechless
- The hug between Riri and Yona was so cute
- AWWW HE HUGGED HIS GRANDPA
- AHHH I hate to seem them fight
- YES YONAAAAA
- No I can’t do this anymore
- WHAT IS SHE GOING TO DO?

This volume is mainly focused around Zeno, as we learn about the reasons behind his betrayal and how his feelings built up over millennias to arrive to this exact moment. And, as the past volumes were, it’s absolutely sad. He’s still a very mysterious character, and I think most of his train of thought will always be kept off the page, as we’ll never know who he really is. But I absolutely loved to see his “everything was written this way” mindset contrasting with Yona’s “we chose each other not because we were forced to”. I really wonder what will happen between them in the next volume.

We do get some scenes of Soowon, and though I’m terrified that every chapter will be the last for him, he’ll always cement himself as my favorite character. He proves again and again he was always the king Kouka needed. But in these moments of sickness, he also shows he has profound empathy for Yona and Hak, and that means the world to me. I’m truly terrified to see him go.

I guess there's going to be be tears in every volume now, huh? I can't even remember when it started, probably back in like 15, but now I'm just sad, thank you. Punching me would be kinder.

But just. Not Yona and Hak hugging Zeno so fiercely after everything that happened, and Zeno betraying his own thoughts in the end. My god. And Yona's dreams are not only stressing me out but provided such a beautiful piece of lore this time around. And Hak, my sweet baby Hak being so understanding and just the support Yona needs.

Now a moment of appreciation for Yona blurting out all that. Needed, earned, deserved. Loved it. And I'll be stopping here or else I'll start crying again, thank you.
