No doubt, the way Crowstroia writes is amazing, especially in terms of diction and word choice. The story begins with a really strong premise that I rarely find in Indonesian books: sci-fi elements involving “mutants” and superpowers.
However, when the premise started that way, I expected the story to flow with at least a 50% sci-fi and 50% romance balance. Instead, what I found was more like 10% sci-fi (bahkan less than ini) and 90% romance.
Plot:
The main conflict is about our protagonist, Bening, being kidnapped. There were so many possible plot points that could have been explored, who those figures were, what their goals were, what was happening behind the scenes, and why they went as far as abducting her. Even if these questions are meant to be answered in the next books, I at least expected some of them to be addressed within this story.
But until the last 400 pages, we are mostly presented with Bening’s life and all her privileges living in Gerha Sungai Bulan, along with her romantic relationship with Tama. Only after that do we get a slight discussion about Bening’s friend, Laskhita, who had gone missing, and what happened to her. And even that feels minimal, almost like an afterthought.
So the main conflict introduced at the beginning ends up feeling like nothing more than decoration. I didn’t find any real climax or peak conflict related to the original premise.
The majority of the story truly centers on Bening and her love story. That’s what left me a bit disappointed, because I kept waiting for the mystery and mastermind behind Bening’s kidnapping to be fully uncovered.
Characterization:
As for the characterization, I wasn’t entirely comfortable with how Tama and Snow handled their personal issues, they often behaved immaturely when resolving conflicts. They frequently mixed personal matters into their professional environment, which doesn’t reflect well on them as top commanders.
In addition, Braga often asks Tama and Snow not to trouble Tatyana at work as a couple. In my opinion, this doesn’t portray professionalism, especially for high-ranking leaders who should not be mixing their personal lives with their workplace. It makes Tatyana and Braga seem unprofessional as well.
Even so, I still really enjoy Crowstroia’s writing style. I ended up deciding to buy the author’s other novels, Aberasi and Sarhad, right after finishing this book.
4.5/5 to be exact. The narration is rich and detailed, so it felt a bit slow-paced to me. I love all the characters, especially the Trojan Five. It would be so much fun to be friends with them. I also really like Bening’s playful personality. Aaaah, but the ending was such a cliffhanger! I can’t wait to read Kak Troia’s next work 😍
