"First class romantic suspense!" - Cynthia Eden, NYT Bestselling Author
Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author Nichole Severn writes mind-twisting suspense and bullet-proof romance with strong heroines, heroes who dare challenge them, and cases you won’t be able to forget.
She graduated from Utah Valley University with a degree in Psychology and is working for her masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. She’s a member of Mystery Writers of America, a founding member of the Addicted to Danger Facebook group, and volunteers for a number of non-profits focused on supporting mothers.
She resides with her very supportive and patient husband, as well as her two demon spawn, in Utah. When she’s not writing, she’s constantly injuring herself training for marathons, accidentally stabbing herself with screwdrivers during her many DIY projects, or playing violin. That’s right. She stabbed herself with a screwdriver.
Nichole Severn is a fantastic writer. Her writing makes you feel your there in the story. Harvey Knight was a ranger Zion National Park. Drennan Hawes a medical assistant in the morgue.
Harvey and Drennan met in a bar one night and it off and a one night stand changed everything for both of them. Drennan had passed out and she was working on a case in Zion National Park. Harvey had helped her get back to her vehicle. Then she went to the hospital. Then she was sent back to Zion National Park to find evidence of the body that was recently taken to the morgue. Things keep you guessing what will happen next. This was very intriguing story that I couldn't put down. Nichole is a very fascinating writer and great with details. Great with working characters together. I recommend this book if your looking for an intriguing story.
I love this series, each book is an individual story but I would urge reading the series, you won't regret it. Nichole Severn creates such wonderful, complex characters and I feel as though I have visited Zion National Park, I can visualise its dense forest, it's craggy peaks, it's rivers, lakes and waterfalls, stunningly beautiful but always with danger lurking. Harvey is traumatized, he couldn't have heard correctly, did she say that she was pregnant ? Ex military, and now a park ranger at the Zion National Park, Harvey Knight is a loner, his abusive childhood had left deep, traumatic scars, scars that he showed to no one. Harvey was astounded when the Assistant Medical Examiner that he had gone to help with a body found in the Emerald Lake, turned out to be his one night stand of two months ago, the same stunning woman who now announced that she was pregnant. Dr. Drennan Haws had been a doctor in a trauma unit in Ohio but her troubled background had caught up with her, she applied for the only job open to her as assistant to the Medical Examiner in Hurricane, Utah, it was a job below her qualifications but it was her escape. A one night stand was out of character for Drennan but it was two tormented souls seeking comfort, little did she know what the outcome would be. Harry wanted nothing to do with the child, he could never be the father that a child would look up to, he couldn't risk ending up like his own father. As this story unfolds, a killer is on the loose, no one was safe especially Drennan who trouble and danger never seemed far away. Much to his surprise, Harvey became very protective of Drennan and the child, he would keep them safe but would he offer more than monetary support ? he didn't think so. Who was the murderer and what was his interest in Drennan ? This is a gripping, emotional story with a troubled romance that will have you turning pages quickly and reading far into the night......at least, that is what happened with me. I received a free copy of this book and my review is totally voluntary.
WOW, just wow! This latest addition to the series, is another engaging suspense romance that will keep the readers on the edge of their seats. The story takes the readers back to the Zion National Park where park ranger Harvey Knight comes across a woman face down in the Emerald Pool. A drowning that might be more than that. When the ME shows up it’s none other than the one nightstand he had two months ago. The woman he couldn’t forget. Leaving her job as an ER physician, Brennan Hawes has left not only the stress of that job but also her cruel mother, to start a job as assistant ME. She’s shocked to see Harvey not only because she never expected to see the man that made her feel special for the first time, but also because she’s just found out she’s pregnant as a result of their night together. Aside from the action and suspense, this story is more than just the plot. This is a story about two individuals whose childhood was one no child should experience. Parents that were physically as well as emotionally and psychologically abusive. While one is determined to overcome the past and start anew, the other believes there is nothing that will change the dark and loveless future. Will these two survive the killer ? If they do, will they realize that together they have the opportunity to have a second chance in life and love ? The author never disappoints and delivers another winner in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
While I enjoyed the dramatic actions of the characters in this book, I felt like I was drowning in their individual emotional crisis. Drennen's past experiences with her mother challenged her and contributed to a great deal of her emotional turmoil, but she continued to work on herself and her emotional health throughout the story. She knew her limits, and she cared enough about herself to surround herself with supportive relationships, a friend and a caring coworker/boss. Harvey needed therapy and lots of it. His emotional state was volatile, and he had situated himself within the military as a means of letting off the anger and frustration from a childhood filled with domestic abuse. He saw himself as dangerous, and he was right. Harvey was constantly trying to adjust to a "normal" life, and while he deserved a loving partner and child, he would definitely have needed help to achieve that goal.
One of the truly great things about this story was that it was loaded with unexpected moments. Ms. Severn's ability to surprise this reader was excellent. The twists and turns of the story kept me enthralled. I loved how deftly she ended each chapter, and I deliberately paced my reading of the book to savor those endings. I also enjoyed reading about Drennan's decisions and dreams for her new family. She was a memorable character.
This is another exciting, suspenseful book that I loved! It broke my heart to hear how Drennan and Harvey had such a horrible childhood that was still affecting each other in their adult life. Drennan used to be an ER doctor in a hospital in Ohio until she couldn’t take her mother’s berating anymore. I hated that she was so desperate that she took an assistant ME position in Utah with a big pay cut. Drennan had a one night stand and ended up pregnant. It was such a shock when she had to go up to Emerald Pool in the Park to take pictures of a woman found face down in the pool and take her body back to the coroner’s office, and met Ranger Harvey Knight the man she had the one night stand. It broke my heart how he was so cold to her at first and didn’t want to be a father or be around her. What a blow after being put down most of her life to have one more do the same! Unfortunately Drennan had to go back to the mountain to find evidence and was knocked out. This was just the beginning of some terrible things happening to Drennan, but luckily Harvey had a conscience and would end up looking for her. I was afraid for Drennan so many times! I was shocked when I found out who was after Drennan. I strongly encourage you to read the book.
Park Ranger Harvey Knight is working as scene when the last person he expected to see again shows up on scene. Dr. Drennan Hawes is the new assistant medical examiner and when she finally makes it up to the scene, she's more surprised by the Ranger and her blurting out she's pregnant than the body she was there to collect. While these two had less than ideal childhoods they have to figure out how to do better for their child. If that means they are both involved or not. While these two are reeling from the surprise pregnancy they also have jobs to do which include catching a killer before they do more harm. The suspense and action in this book started in the beginning and carried through to the end. I loved watching these characters work together and come to some realizations about themselves that they may not have if not for the forced circumstances. You won't get bored with this one because just when you get a little bit comfortable something else happens! I really enjoy how this author gives me such great mystery and suspense with a couple who has to overcome obstacles to get to HEA!
Drennan Hawes the newest medical examiner is sent to a scene in Zion Park at the Emerald Pool. The ranger that is there on sight, Harvey Knight is shocked to see her. They had met in a bar and after a one night stand, never thought to see each other again. It seems they didn't bother with names or any other small talk. But Drennan manages to tell him hello and by the way I'm pregnant. So you have a baby on the way and too people who both are lost feel like they have damaged souls must find a way to co-parent without the father only wanting to be involved financially. Never mind the little problem of a murder in the park. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the two of them trying to navigate their way to finding out about each other. And when the murderer makes an appearance and abducts Drennan, it takes an ominous turn.
I highly recommend this book, as Ms. Severn makes the Zion Park come alive, so you are immersed along with the characters. I did received an ARC copy, so the opinions are my own. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I have really been enjoying this series! I have never been to Zion National Park but this has made me add it to my bucket list. Harvey Knight is a park ranger and they have discovered a woman's body submerged in the park's natural pool. Coroner's assistant Drennan Hawes has arrived on scene and is shocked to see the man that she had one passionate evening with two months ago. She also discovered earlier that morning that she's expecting his child. Fatherhood and relationships are the last things that Harvey wanted in his life and even though he's happy to reconnect with Drennan, he is less than pleased with this news. These two have a lot of baggage and issues to work through but before that can do that, the killer has set their sights on Drennan and Harvey excels at one thing and that's protection! A Drowning in Emerald Pool was told from dual POV and had plenty of action, angst, twists and turns. It stands alone in the series and I can't wait to see what comes next.
A Drowning In Emerald Pool Red Rock Murders #4 Nichole Severn A Harlequin Intrigue Harvey Knight a ranger in Zion National Park was discharged from the Army with shrapnel in his knee. He believes he has evil in his bloodline and is never going to deserve a kid or a family. Drenan Harris knew better than to get knocked up by a one night stand in her new town. She left emergency medicine to become a coroner’s assistant in an effort to run from her past. When a body brings them back together on the day her pregnancy is confirmed things get awkward and complicated. Both have suffered emotional abuse in their upbringing and notice the pain in each other. Ranger Knight has to battle his own demons as much as the bad guy. A suspense with a touch of romance, a few twists and turns and a lot of emotion. This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea. I received an arc of this book. 4 stars
Another brilliant read in the Red Rock Murder Mystery series and like its predecessors this is a fats paced read that keeps you engaged until you turn the last page
I absolutely devoured this book! The chemistry between Harvey and Brennan is intense, and the setting of Zion National Park adds such a beautiful, haunting backdrop to the suspense.
What really sets this story apart is the depth of the characters. Watching Harvey and Brennan navigate their heavy, complicated pasts while dealing with the life-changing news of a pregnancy and a killer hot on their trail was incredibly gripping. It’s not just a thriller; it’s a deeply emotional journey about finding a home in someone else.
If you love high-stakes romantic suspense with emotional heart, this is a must-read. I couldn't put it down!
Another romantic suspense addition in the Zion National Park series. Our hero and heroine of this story both struggle to find peace of mind and heart, while battling their childhood dragons. The plot focuses on their developing relationship and a murder near Emerald Pool. This is a great story with imperfect, realistic characters working to solve the murder. This is fast-paced, with a few twist and turns, and the action scenes are done with this author’s usual flair. I liked how she wove in characters from previous books into the plot, and they remained just as engaging. I particularly enjoyed the dramatic rhythm as the book wraps up to a close along with the clues that the author left along the way. I highly recommend. I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal opinion. No one has asked me, or required me, to submit a review.
I’m not sure I’ll ever visit another National Park again without thinking about murderer. Every book in the series has a murder, but each Ranger involved relationship is a separate story. Drennan, a former ER physician currently Assistant ME, is pregnant and in the crosshairs of a killer. Harvey, former soldier and current Park Ranger, has never wanted to be a family man afraid his past would come back. These two have so much in common and so much to fear, they are determined to not let the past ruin their future. As they fight the past they struggle to forge a path together for a future as a family. It’s a thrill ride from page one and one of my favorites in the series. I read an advanced copy from Severn and wrote my review voluntarily.
A Drowning in Emerald Pool is another great addition to the Red Rock Murder series by Nichole Severn. I loved it! I really enjoyed the way the author describes the scenery at Zion National Park , it makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters! I really felt sorry for both Harvey and Brennan and the way they had to deal with the past. I applauded Brennan for leaving her job and her mother and starting over with a new job and a new life! I don’t want to give away to much but the plot was very well done and suspenseful! You can read it as a standalone but I would recommend to read the series from the start because you’ll love the other books! I received this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion. Looking forward to read the next book !
This just might be my favorite of the series! Harvey is a good ranger, but he doesn't trust himself with happiness because of the life he was raised in. Drennan had it good once upon a time until an accident changed her family dynamic and times were never idyllic again. When a casual one night stand brings more than they ever bargained for and a chance meeting puts them in each other's realm again, Harvey and Drennan have to see how it all plays out while trying to keep one step ahead of the danger that is lurking around this case they stumbled upon. I liked them a lot, but I did feel like we could have had a little more of a dive into what made her walk away from the life she knew and forge ahead with this one. Overall, they were attention grabbing and the suspense was top notch.
When Drennan shows up at a supposed drowning in Zion National, she is surprised to run into Park Ranger Harvey, her recent one night stand. She had never expected to see him again and things are complicated since she just found out she was pregnant. As they investigate the drowning, that was actually murder, they each realize they have something with the one they could not stop thinking about. Harvey wants no part of being a father and insists he will be there financially for Drennan. Drennan wants a loving family, one she was denied by a witch of a mother. Can they solve the mystery and learn that love is more important than their pasts? Nichole keeps getting better and better with and this book does not disappoint. The series are all nonstop feelings and action and shouldn't be missed.
Another fantastic book by Ms. Severn. I love this series. Harvey is a ranger at the Zion National park. When he finds a body a medical examiner is called to the scene. He doesn’t expect to see Drennan again. When she arrives to the scene she can’t believe it’s him. She just found she’s pregnant, and just throws it out there. He makes it clear he will not be part of the child’s life. Only every step of the way he’s there to protect her. Especially when her life is in danger. He has his reasons for pushing her away. Drennan doesn’t know why Harvey is around. He made it clear he doesn’t want her.
An interesting thing happens between them. See what happens. Do they still have that chemistry and heat they shared that night?
Pregnant by a one night stand and not knowing his name is the situation Drennan finds herself in. But meeting said one night stand at a dead body is not how Drennan imagined finding him. But Ranger Harvey Knight has no intention of being a father, ever. Drennan is the curveball he never saw coming. And though he might not be willing to admit it to himself, his actions tell more than he is willing to. But a killer is on the loose and Drennan doesn’t even know she’s got a target on her back. Harvey will have to do everything in his power to keep her safe and that might not be enough until he’s ready to admit the truth. But the danger is closer than they realize and Harvey might be too late to stop it all.
A Drowning in Emerald Pool book 4 of Red Rock murders by Nichole Severn is a great book this whole book series just keep getting better and better. I think I said the last one was a great book but I really love this book. I love the couple Harvey Knight and Drennan Hawes. Harvey is a Ranger at Zion National Park and Drennan is Doctor who works as an assistant medical examiner, they had a one night stand and now she's pregnant. Drennan has a killer after her and Harvey keeps rescuing her. They will both have some close calls with the killer, but they figure out they love each other in the meantime. I give this book 5 stars and I want to thank Nichole Severn for letting me review her books.
This episode of solving murders in Zion National Park is less about the investigation and more about the personal struggle with childhood trauma of the two main characters and the deep wounds left by selfish parents and healed by love at first sight. From the first time they set eyes upon each other, the MCs recognize the same pain in each other, and their instant physical attraction doesn't detract from their connection of two souls doubting themselves.
The rest is serendipity or fate, and a story well written.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Harvey Knight is investigating a drowning at Emerald Pool when the coroner, Drennan Hawes, shows up. Turns out they had a one-night stand two months earlier. When Drennan sees Harvey, she blurts out that she is pregnant. Due to his past, Harvey doesn't want anything to do with Drennan or the baby. When the drowning is ruled a homicide and the killer threatens Drennan, Harvey has to decided what the wants to do. Will he protect Drennan and realize that they might have forever or will he give in to his past and walk away?
This is the fourth book in the series and an enjoyable read.
Action, Depth, and Heart Another incredible installment in the Red Rock series from Severn. This story is expertly balanced, delivering intense action and suspense alongside poignant drama, reflection, love, and healing. The protagonists, Drennan and Harvey, are characters of remarkable depth and realism. Despite the arduous childhoods that have long dominated their lives, their willingness to remain open to growth and moving forward is truly moving. I highly recommend both this book and the entire series. I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
Zion national park ranger harvey knight. A good guy, with a background that seems to be in the way. He's a guy with a big heart. I loved everything about his part in the story.
Drennan, mortuary assistance. Tough job she has. Phenomenal work. She's always on top of things. Sometimes there's danger involved in everything she does.
I've read several books by nicole severn. And i've enjoyed each and every single one of them. Always looking forward to that next story. She's writing.
Fabulous author I loved everything about this story. This series is phenomenal.
I really enjoyed reading A Drowning in Emerald pools . This is an outstanding suspense romance . It is definitely an on the edge pulse pounding story . Zion National Park ranger Harvey Knight is surprised to come face to face with Drennan Hawes his recent one night stand at a drowning he's investigating she happens to be the assigned Coroner . He really is taken back to find out she is pregnant . Harvey has issues and tells her he doesn't want to be involved but will provide financial support to her . As things start to unfold in the investigation Drennan finds herself in serious danger . Harvey and Drennan find themselves pulled together I highly recommend taking the time to read
Harvey and Drennan are both carrying heavy baggage from their childhoods while they hide out in the wilds of Utah. His, a physically and mentally abusive father, her a mentally abusive mother. When a one night stand leads to an unexpected pregnancy, and a unexpected meeting over a corpse brings then back together, they thought that was the worst of their problems until the murderer sets his sights on Drennan. The battle both of them go through to get to their happily ever after kept me on the edge of my seat and is a stellar installment in this series.
Drowning in Emerald Pool carries heavy emotional baggage that leaves you with a swirl of mixed emotions. You fluctuate between sympathy, anger, frustration, and hope. You’ll adore both Havery and Dreanna, even as they struggle to sort their lives out and face unexpected twists along the way. When they fall smack into danger, everything is thrown out of whack, pulling you deeper into the story as you need to know how it all ends. And yes—you’ll definitely want to smack Havery across the head to wake him up.
Drennan and Harvey both carry the deep rooted pain of childhood abuse. When their paths collide an unbreakable connection is formed with a lasting consequence. Drennan wants the full dream she never previously thought possible but Harvey believes he inherited an evil that cannot be contained. Throw in an unidentified murder victim and a killer who wants to keep his identity unknown and Drennan and Harvey may not survive long enough to see if their happy ending is possible. Another great story set in the beautiful Zion National Park.
Harvey and Drennan had a special connection from the first time they saw each other and recognized that both of them had suffered pain in the past. But things become complicated not only by her becoming pregnant but also the danger involved when a woman turns up dead in Emerald Pool. And while Harvey may not think he deserves to have a happy relationship, when Drennan is met with danger his protective side cannot help but surface.
3.5 stars. The story focused more on the relationship between Harvey and Drennan (and their respective traumas) and less on the suspense/thriller aspects -- maybe because there was little mystery related to the murder victim once they were identified. Unexpected pregnancy is one of my least favourite tropes but I liked how the author addressed it and incorporated it into the overall story.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
