OK, any of you who are my followers and seeing this know that I finish books pretty fucking quickly
And the fact that reading this book spans over a month for me is extremely unusual.
I had the EARC through the hive, and I was really really excited to read it. Turns out this book kind of unearthed some familial trauma for me and I had to DNF for my own mental health reasons.

I know Nadine as a person, she’s lovely and I absolutely adored only lovers in the building.
So, when she sent me a finished copy of this book out of the blue, I said I’m gonna finish it.

I will tell you that the second time starting this, I was able to step back from my own issues and really enjoy the book more as a spectator than somebody going through their own internal struggle.
So for me, this book is a perfect example of “it’s not the book, it’s me” and that a DNF may not always be a DNF.
OK now onto the book itself. This book feels like a bubble gum goth- I just made up the term, but I really feel like it suits the book! 😂
It’s set in Key West, which is such a loud and vibrant place but it’s got all these spooky connotations and paranormal aspects.
I really really loved the two main characters and I think that’s why the book initially affected me so much because where the main character saw care from her mother, I saw controlling, manipulation, and an unhealthy toxic relationship.
And then, for the MMC, I saw a great distance between him and his father where they could barely even say two words to one another. Which definitely did not help ☠️

The title of Old Flames initially drew me in. I'm a sucker for second-chance romance, so I really thought this would be right up my alley.
I really enjoyed the setting of this book, the fact that both Jules and Leo were writers (I loooove books about books), and thought it was a cute touch that Leo nicknamed Jules as "July." But I did have a bit of a disconnect when it came to how Jules and Leo had such a spark when they met for such a short time in the past, which is what led me to rate this 3 stars. It didn't feel super believable to me that them meeting that long ago would affect them for so long after. Even though I had that disconnect, I can appreciate that it was a more unique take on a second-chance romance, because often they're with a past connection where the two people were together for a long time.
I really loved the narration of the book on the audio. The narrator in particular did such a great job with voices and I was truly impressed!

3.5 stars, really.
Jules is a popular author who is in a flux: still haunted by her mother’s death, she’s looking for a true home and her place in her social group. When she’s invited to a writer’s workshop in Key West, she jumps at the chance for escape, bringing along her best friend, also an author. But things aren’t so simple in paradise. A fellow author she once sparked with is also in attendance and the hotel they’re staying at is reportedly haunted, which explains why Jules begins experiencing strange visions and feelings almost as soon as she arrives. Is this truly paradise or is it a nightmare?
I absolutely loved the setting (duh!) and the set-up for this story. I don’t think anyone could hate the idea of ghosts, crushes, and fun of the sun in Key West! It’s like book porn! And the book really delivers on a lot of fronts: the atmosphere is fantastic, the way ghosts and the romance are incorporated just enough to share the spotlight. The balance was really great.
The supporting cast was also really fantastic- Vicky, Ayesha, Matty, Daphne, etc. They were fun and I would love to see more of them in the future (hint hint!).
I just felt like there were a lot of names and characters to keep track of in regard to the very minor, supernatural, and historical characters, and there was a lot going on with them. It became a lot to keep track of and I’m not sure I caught everything. For example, I really liked the conclusion but some of the details were a little fuzzy to me. I think I got everything, but I’m not sure. There was a lot crammed in there, and maybe cutting some of that would’ve been better.
But overall, I really enjoyed this book and would love to hear more from them. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author!

Thank you NetGalley for the ALC! This was such a nontypical romance and I really enjoyed it! It was refreshing to read something in the genre I like but with a storyline that doesn’t follow the popular tropes, giving a new change of pace. The narrator was amazing. I don’t think I’ve heard a narrator do that many different voices (and well) since I listened to the Game of Thrones audiobooks like 5 years ago.

And I absolutely loved that Leo calls her “July.” It’s such a small, intimate detail, but it says so much about the history between them—and about the way he still sees the woman beneath all the hurt and distance. Their connection feels lived-in, complicated, and deeply personal, with the kind of chemistry that doesn’t disappear simply because two people are afraid to acknowledge it.
Leo, a brooding horror writer with demons of his own, is every bit as captivating as Jules remembers. Their second-chance (more like a missed chance) romance unfolds with a delicious slow burn, but what makes their relationship truly compelling is the emotional work happening beneath the attraction. These two have to confront what they’ve lost, what they’ve held onto for too long, and whether loving each other means finally learning to let the past go.
And then there’s the girls’ trip aspect—and the reconciliation was one of my favorite pieces of the story. Watching old wounds begin to heal and friendships find their way back to solid ground added another beautiful layer to a story already steeped in grief, forgiveness, and second chances. Sometimes moving forward means admitting that you can’t keep carrying every hurt with you.
But Key West itself deserves a mention because it isn’t merely the setting—it is a character in this story.

Key West feels vibrant and alive one moment, haunting and unsettling the next, perfectly mirroring the emotional journey unfolding between them. The Aurora Inn, in particular, gives the story that deliciously eerie sense that the past may not be finished with Jules yet.
Because as the attraction between Jules and Leo intensifies, so do the whispers, visions, and questions surrounding the ghosts that seem determined to follow her.

August 20, 2026This saddens me deeply. After giving Only Lovers in the Building 5 stars, I was so eager to try out this author's newest romance, but this was not at all what I was hoping for.
I ended up dnfing at 53%, and this is after trying desperately to get a good grasp on this story as a whole. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a 2.
The biggest issue for me is that there is too much trying to happen, making me not care about anyone or anything individually. We have entirely too many characters - I think I know more about the MCs friends' relationship than I do about the MCs relationship? Every page is riddled with group dialogue, which can work really well when you spend enough time getting to know and love the characters individually, but I feel like we skipped that step.
I honestly couldn't tell you anything about the relationship between Leo and July because I am confused by it. They met before, he became enamored and followed her career until they could one day reconnect. But then they pretend to not know each other and have this strange animosity for about five minutes before it turns into a normal half-flirty, half-casual kind of friendship. I don't know, I really feel like nothing here was clicking for me.
This story also has an underlying ghost theme, where the characters are staying in a haunted building and holding seances and experiencing moderately creepy things. Except most of it happens off page, so I still don't find myself interested in what they are doing. And I LOVE ghosts and ghost stories and hauntings, so this had the potential to really elevate the story. But instead it felt like just one more thing the book was trying to throw in there without building it up enough on its own.
Audio note: the audio was probably the strongest piece of this reading experience for me. The narrator delivers a great performance, trying to breathe life and personality into the characters through subtle accent changes to distinguish one character from another (since there were so many characters in general). And you can tell that the narrator was really exploring the content of the words while delivering them, although at a higher playback speed (I usually listen at 3x speed), it means the cadence can be quite inconsistent at times.

Leo and Jules first meet at an event where Jules is working as a waitress and Leo is already a writer. They share a short conversation, and that seems to be the end of it. Years later, Leo is invited to be a keynote speaker at an authors’ convention. When he realizes Jules—who is now an author herself—will be there, he decides to go, hoping he’ll get the chance to see her again.
And of course, the convention is being held at a haunted inn. 👻📚
There is definitely a lot going on in this story between the authors, the hauntings, the ghosts, and the romance. I really enjoyed the spooky atmosphere, and I honestly wish I had saved this one for October because it would be such a perfect fall read!
Jules is also carrying a lot of grief from losing her mother. When she begins seeing her mother’s ghost, she needs to figure out why she is appearing to her. She eventually visits a fortune teller looking for answers, but she’s afraid to tell Leo what is happening because she doesn’t think he’ll believe her.

The second half of this book worked better for me than the first part but overall, this book fell flat for me. I didn’t get the chemistry between Leo and July at all. The ghost story also wasn’t for me. The audio was great though!

The Key West setting was absolutely perfect. Between the historic inn, the tropical atmosphere, and the ghostly mystery woven throughout the story, it had such an immersive vibe. I could practically feel the warm ocean air while I was reading.
I really enjoyed the second chance romance between Jules and Leo. Their history gave the relationship so much emotional depth, and the slow burn kept me invested from beginning to end. Mixing romance with a supernatural mystery was a fun combination, and I loved trying to piece everything together alongside the characters.
The atmosphere was definitely the standout for me. It was equal parts cozy, mysterious, and romantic, with just enough spooky moments to keep things interesting without overwhelming the love story.
If you’re looking for a romance with a beautiful setting, a touch of the paranormal, and a heartfelt second chance love story, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up. It was a great read, and now I kind of want to book a trip to Key West.

Universal
When Jules (July) and Leo are at the same authors' convention, the spark they had years ago is reignited. But Jules is very wary, so Leo's got his work cut out for him if he wants that spark to become a flame. Add in a ghost that haunts the venue (and Jules), let's just say, things won't be easy for them.
A little ghostly haunting and the vibrant setting help lift this story. Leo and Jules are a cute, but VERY slow burn couple. Leo definitely did the majority of the pursuing and the work, while Jules had to work on herself. She was a very frustrating character for me to read, but I could still empathize with her grief over her mother, as I just lost mine at the beginning of the year, so I could see her wariness because of her grief. Still, she took so long to come around that I despaired she ever would. Thankfully with a lot of research, support from her awesome friend Vicky, and Leo's gentle persistence, things finally worked out. I couldn't go a full 4 stars because Jules was so frustrating, but the story as a whole is fun and the touch of paranormal is awesome.

In My Own Words: A collision between the past and the present for two brokenhearted survivors who were haunted by what-was and what-could-have-been.
About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Aure Nash. She did a brilliant job with narration and was able to convincingly present the characters.
My Final Say: Old Flames put me through the paces. I readily confess that I was confused by it. Perhaps, it was the formatting or the pacing. It is hard to pinpoint. The story was original, yes. It was interesting, yes. However, it was not always easy to follow. Initially, I thought I grasped where it was going, but as the story continued to unfold, I was a bit lost.
In the end, I walked away understanding that a Scrooge-esque ghosting situation and a supernatural mystery of sorts were at play. What I mean is that facing the past was necessary for the present and future to be influenced. Also, the symbolism represented in the story paralleled the lives of the leads. Each component seemed to metaphorically speak, in terms of grief, regret, forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope, dare I say.

About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Aure Nash. She did a brilliant job with narration and was able to convincingly present the characters.
My Final Say: Old Flames put me through the paces. I readily confess that I was confused by it. Perhaps, it was the formatting or the pacing. It is hard to pinpoint. The story was original, yes. It was interesting, yes. However, it was not always easy to follow. Initially, I thought I grasped where it was going, but as the story continued to unfold, I was a bit lost.
In the end, I walked away understanding that a Scrooge-esque ghosting situation and a supernatural mystery of sorts were at play. What I mean is that facing the past was necessary for the present and future to be influenced. Also, the symbolism represented in the story paralleled the lives of the leads. Each component seemed to metaphorically speak, in terms of grief, regret, forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope, dare I say.

Old Flames by Nadine Gonzalez is a romance with a supernatural mystery too. The story unfolds slowly but was often confusing and disconnected. There was too much going on.
The story begins four years after the prologue and is Jules and Leo’s story. They are both authors now but met briefly ten years before when she was a server at a dinner he was being honored at along with twenty-nine other authors. The current story mainly takes place in Key West at their literary society lecture series where he’s the headline speaker at a historic inn that is considered haunted by some. I loved the itinerary of the weekend’s events and activities and learning the actual reason for why he agreed to participate after the original headliner fell through. Could there be a second chance romance since they instantly connected years ago even if it was hard to believe that such a brief encounter meant so much to both of them?
The story is told in two parts- during the weekend of the lecture series and then the week following that seemed to be more spontaneous. The authors are a cast of characters with lots of quirks but there are too many characters and we only scratch the surface. Some just aren’t important enough to the story. There are multiple stories being told and a few twists and turns along with many surprises. There are vivid descriptions and I can feel the heat and smell the ocean. My senses were definitely awakened and can feel the vibrancy of the location. There’s often an eeriness and there are ghosts and hauntings but much of it unfolds outside of the story. Her mother’s ghost seems to be following her, but why? I liked how the paranormal aspects and romance are woven together but didn’t always find it necessary. But I loved how books were so important and central to the story.

Jules and Leo end up staying at the inn for an extra week to write but they find time for more. Daphne, the organizer of the event is there too and they all stay connected during the weekend. Jules and Leo’s interactions were sometimes fiery, other times heated in different ways. They definitely confide in each other and we learn more about their lives and families. There’s also more paranormal activity and an increased attraction and awareness between them. When they finally become lovers could it lead to a real relationship? The story ended in an unexpected happily ever after, of course with some twists, but will it last?
Old Flames seems to defy logic with an unexpected second chance romance and paranormal activity woven throughout.
I rated the book 3.5 stars but rounded to 4 stars here and on other sites.

Put everything Nadine Gonzalez writes in my veins!
This is the perfect transition to spooky season because you get romance, camaraderie, broody authors (my fave!), and ghost stories.
Jules and Leo had a chance meeting one night a decade ago and they haven’t forgotten each other since. Leo was being honored as a 30 under 30 author celebration at the ripe age of 23 and Jules was working as a server. He was a bit of wunderkind and spent the next decade living up to the hype.
At the same time, Jules (short for July) found her way into publishing to acclaim of her own.
Their paths reconnected when they’re both invited to a literary fest in Key West for mostly horror/speculative writers. They’re two of seven-ish authors invited and it’s such a fun cast of characters. I love the found family aspect of it, however temporary they are.
The group of authors are also really diverse which I always love.
But the loveeeee story! I’m obsessed. It’s a quiet sort of love and definitely a slow burn. They’ve both been secretly pining for one another and reading the hell out of each other’s books to keep their mutual obsessions at bay. I literally imagine Leo’s copies of July’s books to be dog eared and annotated. WITH TABS!
I think their story is the quintessential story of why you need the right person at the right time. Throughout the course of the story we find out that the night the met was a tragic turning point for both of them. If they had connected that night, they probably would have crashed and burned. I’m happy that they got to grow up and heal a bit before we saw them recognize that this was their time for forever.
And then there’s a ghost story because most Southern cities are haunted in some aspect and Key West is no exception. I love how the haunted factor was built up throughout the story because how much the locals did not like the Aurora Inn. I don’t want to tell all of the details about the ghost story but it really rounded out the story for me.
Overall, this book felt like a love letter to finding yourself and harnessing that to find your person (including your platonic soulmate!). I loved this so much. Autobuy author forever!
PSA for audiobook lovers, DO IT!
OMG this audio was everything! Aure Nash is crazy talented. I forgot most of the time that this wasn’t duet narration because the shifts were seamless.
This book also has a grand cast of characters and I was able to differentiate each character through their unique tones, especially Jules’ BFF Vicky. I’m already picturing an ensemble cast for the adaptation.

Two writers of speculative fiction reunite at a writers’ retreat in Key West 10 years after their initial attraction sparks.
When Jules met Leo he was being honored as a young horror writer for his debut novel. She was grieving the loss of her mother. Over the years, they followed each others’ paths. She eventually publishes her work too. When they reconnect at the Aurora Inn they both know a lot more about each other than should be normal. Jules starts questioning her own mind when she starts seeing ghosts at the Inn. She tries to pay it cool, but once the retreat ends and she and Leo are thinly two left behind, they agree to figure out the source of the paranormal activity together.
July and Leo are true fans of each other’s works and it’s very enjoyable to me to read about people who are so passionate about what they do and the content they consume. I loved the setting in this book. The descriptions were so rich and the writing is so evocative. The entire paranormal aspect of the book was my favorite, the ghosts and the experiences around it, the cultural insight they get from the locals, really paints a lush picture of the entire situation. The writers conferences such a fun idea to set the mood from the beginning. Because of course, if you put a bunch of horror writers in an old inn full f questionable history, something weird will come out of it!
The questionable part of the story to me is that their original meeting 10 years ago was so impactful to them after so long. It was a nice moment in time, but it’s a bit overwhelming to realize how much they both elevated this 5 minute interaction. The romantic connection didn’t feel believable to me. I think it went from a spark to in love too quickly and they didn’t bring me with them for that journey. From the outside, it makes more sense for their connection to only be physical and develop onto something more off the page after. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the genre being romance was actually hindering this story with the happy ending requirement.
There are a lot of great characters and they all have a very specific voice and individual story that really elevated the experience for me. I listened to the audiobook and I was very impressed Audre Nash did an amazing job with these characters, letting their personalities shine through in the performance.
Overall, this was an enjoyable summer book and I think it was well-executed creative idea.

I really loved the representation in this book. The diversity of the characters is something I notice and always enjoy finding in a romance story.
We are introduced to Jules (July), a fantasy writer who goes to Key West for a literary festival. There she ends up falling back into the world of Leo White, the horror writer who made an imprint on July years ago. Whilst the old feelings start to resurface, July also starts experiencing odd whispers and visions tied to the antique inn they are staying in. They start working together to investigate the paranormal activity while trying to decide how they want to proceed with their relationship.
I really wish I could have gotten more chemistry from July and Leo. While I believe there was possibility here due to the connection that these two already shared and the second chance romance trope, it would have been more fulfilling for me personally if we could have had a more drawn-out connection with a slower burn of romance between the two, especially due to the fact that they have history from previous encounters.
Additionally, I couldn't really figure out the genre for this story. It seemed to float between a rom-com, Contemporary fiction and a ghost story. This could have been part of the suspense and the creep factor, or I could just not pick up a definitive vibe, I don't know what it is. It felt like it was transitioning and switching from one genre to another, but I was also really unsure where it was heading.
I don't think the ghost story itself worked fully toward the end, because while I kept anticipating its influence to play a bigger role in the entire story, after it concluded, it felt like a piece that could have been skipped without affecting the plot at all.
Having said that, I finished this book in one sitting because of how quick a read it was. Despite having my qualms, I did find that I actually enjoyed myself. With the ambiance of the Key West setting and the diversity presented within the book as well as the premise, I think that the author is worth reading in the future. I hope that the next books I pick up from them might strike my fancy even more.

*Old Flames* had all the ingredients for a book I should have loved: a second-chance romance, two authors reconnecting at a haunted hotel in Key West, ghosts, a decades-old mystery, and plenty of spooky atmosphere. Unfortunately, while I really liked the concept, the execution was a little uneven for me.
My biggest issue was the romance. Leo and July have a brief connection ten years earlier and then meet again a decade later, but I had a hard time believing the intensity of their feelings after so much time apart. I wanted more development between them in the present to make that history feel meaningful. Instead, their relationship seemed to pick up at an emotional level that I never quite felt they'd earned, and because of that, I struggled to feel the chemistry between them.
I actually found myself much more interested in the haunted hotel and the mystery surrounding its past. The Key West setting was wonderfully atmospheric, and I loved the idea of the ghosts pulling Leo and July into a story that had been buried for years. There were some genuinely interesting paranormal elements, but at times it felt like the romance and supernatural mystery were competing for space rather than working together. The second half worked better for me once the mystery really got moving.
I listened to the audiobook and thought the narration was a highlight. It kept me engaged even during the parts of the story that weren't completely working for me.
Overall, *Old Flames* had a creative premise and a setting I loved, but I wanted more emotional depth from the romance and a smoother blend between the love story and paranormal mystery. I think readers who love atmospheric romances, haunted settings, second chances, and a touch of supernatural mystery may connect with this one more than I did.

I just finished Old Flames, and I have to admit… I never even read the blurb before requesting it. I saw Nadine Gonzalez’s name on NetGalley, hit request immediately, and hoped for the best. I’m so glad I did because this book was such a fun surprise!
I wasn’t expecting the paranormal elements, but they made this story so much fun. A group of writers gathering at what may or may not be a haunted estate? I was hooked from the very beginning. The eerie setting, the mystery surrounding the house, and the possibility of ghosts and even time travel kept me completely invested.
Julia and Leo’s story was so easy to root for. Ten years after meeting, fate brings them back together, and watching Leo fight for the woman he never stopped loving was one of my favorite parts of the book. Julia is understandably more guarded because of everything she’s been through, but seeing her slowly open herself up again made their second chance feel earned and believable.
I also loved that the supporting characters felt just as important as the romance. Every writer brought something different to the story, and I found myself just as invested in discovering their secrets as I was in uncovering what really happened inside that mysterious house.
By the end, everything came together beautifully. The mystery, the romance, the friendships, and the paranormal elements blended together so well, and I loved learning what happened to each of the characters after everything was revealed.

Add in ghosts, local history, and a supernatural mystery, and I was hooked.
The Florida Keys setting was so vivid that it felt like a character all on its own. Between the atmosphere, the haunted mansion, and the paranormal elements, this book had me fully invested. As someone who loves a good ghost story, I really enjoyed how the supernatural storyline was woven into both the mystery and the romance.
If you're coming in expecting a super spicy romance, this isn't that. The romance is built on history, longing, and all the things left unsaid. It's a true slow burn that leans more toward women's fiction with romantic elements, and honestly, I think that's what made it work so well.
I listened to the audiobook and Aure Nash did an incredible job with the narration. There were so many distinct voices that I occasionally forgot it was a single narrator. My only complaint is that I would have loved a duet narration for Jules and Leo.
Overall, this was a fresh, atmospheric read that blended romance, mystery, and the paranormal beautifully. ✨

Add in ghosts, local history, and a supernatural mystery, and I was hooked.
The Florida Keys setting was so vivid that it felt like a character all on its own. Between the atmosphere, the haunted mansion, and the paranormal elements, this book had me fully invested. As someone who loves a good ghost story, I really enjoyed how the supernatural storyline was woven into both the mystery and the romance.
If you're coming in expecting a super spicy romance, this isn't that. The romance is built on history, longing, and all the things left unsaid. It's a true slow burn that leans more toward women's fiction with romantic elements, and honestly, I think that's what made it work so well.
I listened to the audiobook and Aure Nash did an incredible job with the narration. There were so many distinct voices that I occasionally forgot it was a single narrator. My only complaint is that I would have loved a duet narration for Jules and Leo.
Overall, this was a fresh, atmospheric read that blended romance, mystery, and the paranormal beautifully. ✨

I enjoyed the banter between July and Leo and felt the deep admiration they have for each other. They both see and understand each other in a way they don’t let other people see them.
As a certified scaredy cat, I really loved the spooky and unsettling setting, the plotline surrounding it, and how it aided in everyone’s personal journeys.
My favorite parts of the story took place during the literary conference, which I would say is about 80ish% of the story. I really enjoyed seeing Leo and July together in a group environment. They had a natural pull towards each other, and I even felt like something was off when they got in their tiffs.
I also LOVED the side characters and the other plotlines that were going on in the story. It feels like a lot happened, because every character has their own situations that they’re working through, and I thought every storyline and person added something to the story in some way. A lot of the themes and messages, and the portrayal of depression and grief, in this book touched me.
I do think the book drags on near the end and after a while the mystery got old. I also am not a big fan of how it ended, but what I liked about this book outweighs what I didn’t like, and I recommend it for people who like stories with ghosts and/or stories about self-discoveries, navigating through grief, and lessons about life and love

🎧 Audio Review: I think I would’ve preferred multiple, or at least dual narrators for this audiobook, but it was decent overall.
📝 Story Review: The blurb for this one sounded really interesting, but I wasn’t a fan of the execution. For me, I didn’t feel the connection between the two MC’s. They saw each other and spoke for like 5 mins… then 10 years later are reunited and apparently he’s never forgotten her and says he’s been in love with her all these years? 🤔 I didn’t feel the supposed chemistry between them, nor did I like the FMC very much.
As for the paranormal/historical mystery aspect of the story, I enjoyed that part, but would’ve preferred that to be its own story, separate from this romance story… and wasn’t a huge fan of how it was all woven together, but then again, that’s just my perspective.

I loved Nadine Gonzalez’s debut novel, and Old Flames is also a great read. July and Leo meet randomly at a gala in New York City where he is a guest and she is working as a server. That brief encounter makes a strong impression on both of them, and when they meet again at a writer’s conference ten years later in Key West, sparks fly.
Their group is staying in a haunted hotel and has a great time staying up late together waiting for the spirits to arrive. July is struggling with depression and grief, yet Leo is determined to break down her walls. When July misses her flight home and returns to Key West, Leo is still there and it seems like they are fated to spend time together. July is haunted by a ghost she saw in the garden at the hotel, and wonders if it was her mother. She seeks answers with a palm reader and hopes to find keys to her future.

I wanted to like this book, but there were so many things that just didn't connect for me. The story follows Jules and Leo, who had met briefly, once, 10 years ago at some event where Leo was being honored as a 30 under 30 (at age 23), and he never learns her name. He randomly finds out that she is also an author one day when he's going by a bookstore. Already this is random. Then, Jules and Leo are invited to an author convention in Key West with four other horror authors. Because these are horror authors, there is an underlying plot of them staying in a hotel/B&B that is haunted and then navigating this during their stay.
The book had dual POV, but did not actually state at the beginning of each chapter which viewpoint you were starting with. Then things were happening that just didn't make sense - and maybe they didn't make sense because the book just felt boring. And I did not feel the connection between Leo and Jules - it felts forced and unrealistic. After meeting for less than 10 minutes 10 years ago, you say you're in love with them and had been the whole time? No thanks - that just doesn't feel realistic, even for a romance book.
I think if the focus would have been more clearly on the haunted house, and having more of a plot/point to what was happening in the book, this would have been a more enjoyable read. But with characters that aren't very likable, and a few other couple storylines thrown in at random, this one missed the mark.

What I loved most about this story was the way it incorporated elements of a haunting to immediately pull me in. The periodic timestamps marking strange events created a constant sense of suspense, and I found myself eager to uncover what would happen next. The history surrounding both the inn and Key West added another layer to the story, making it feel rich and immersive. I'm typically not a fan of magical realism, but it was woven into the story so naturally that it enhanced the plot rather than distracting from it.
I also really enjoyed both Jules and Leo as characters. Watching them continually find their way back to each other—even when Jules was determined to keep her distance—made their romance feel earned. While their relationship developed over a relatively short period of time, it was clear their connection had been building for much longer. After everything Jules had been through, I was especially happy to see her get the happily ever after she deserved.
Finally, Aure Nash's narration was absolutely outstanding. She effortlessly gave each character a distinct voice, accents included, making it easy to stay immersed in the story from beginning to end.

I didn't quite click with this one, and I do think it's largely a case of "it's not you, it's me". The writing quality was solid, and I liked the narration. But I expected to be more invested in the romance than I ultimately was. It felt more like I was supposed to understand the connection through the narrative, versus the characters and their interactions. In other words—July and Leo lacked chemistry. This is a story that heavily depended on chemistry, so that's.. problematic. That being said, it's also somewhat subjective. So what rings true for me won't necessarily ring true for every other reader. I just couldn't buy into this short interaction years prior spinning into something so big and passionate. I needed more.
The setting (a haunted hotel, yay!) and ghost story appealed more to me, to the point where I feel like... maybe if this had been more intentionally a fun ghostly tale and less romance-first, it would've been better? But I just couldn't get full invested as it is. Which is unfortunate, because I do think there are good components here. I hate it when books aren't bad, and really just don't click.

The atmosphere was definitely the strongest part of the story, and I loved the ghostly vibes woven throughout.
That said, I never fully connected with Jules and Leo’s romance. Their history was interesting, but I found myself wanting more emotional depth and chemistry to really sell me on their reunion. At times, the pacing felt uneven, and I wasn’t always sure if the story wanted to lean more into the romance or the paranormal mystery.

This perhaps is my own fault for going into this blind but this book definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.
I’d say this is a thriller/mystery-esque romance. July discovers an other worldly being while staying at a haunted hotel in Key West. The ghost story continues to unravel as other guests share the strange occurances they’ve experienced as well. But the ghost has some hang up with July and circumstances keep her in Key West where she feels the need to solve this ghosts mystery and true identity.
July and Leo met briefly 10 years prior and apparently 1 short back alley conversation left them both smitten. 10 years later they’re reunited at a writers retreat in Key West and they’re both buzzing with those feelings that apparently never left. The romance felt really forced to me and I did not feel a connection between the characters. At least not one strong enough to have them move as quickly as they do. I get fated mated but idk… these two just didn’t hit for me.
I won’t yuck anyone’s yum - if you like ghost stories and haunty romances, this book likely is for you… personally, this book was just not for me.

This was my first Nadine Gonzalez read but not my first Aure Nash narrated audio. Aure has a warm, rich tone that soothes and calms me. She has the ability to show a wide range of emotion and nail a conversation between multiple people. I appreciated her use of accents for side characters. The whole audio felt well paced and the pitching and cadence between the MCs was enjoyable.
The story had a slow start for me. I decided to push through to get to the slow burn, second chance tropes. The ghostly atmosphere wasn’t exactly what I expected from the synopsis. Leo and Jules were separately good characters but together, I didn’t feel the chemistry I had hoped for and it felt more like a “missed chance” than a “second chance.”
What worked for me was the immersive setting of Key West (with mentions of tourists) and the historic inn. The overall vibe of the story was cozy (the narrator definitely helped with this!). I appreciated the subplot of the girls’ trip and the reconnecting of the girls. It’s a creative story and I’m glad I got the opportunity to read/listen to it! 3.5 stars

If Aure Nash is narrating, I am there! I adored this almost second chance love story set in Key West. The world building here was immaculate. You could almost feel the heat, smell the salt flecked breezes, and hear the clink of ice in mojito glasses...or perhaps feel the looming presence of the area's ghosts.
If you like your contemporary romances with a side of history and an air of mystery, Old Flames is going to satisfy. What begins as a haunted mansion meets writers retreat flips to The romance simmers rather than boiling over in terms of spice, and it worked really well here. This story reflects on all the things left unsaid. It really ramps up the longing and yearning in the second half of the book. While there are allusions to past feelings of jealousy and envy between Jules and Leo, it doesn't quite translate to rivals to lovers in their present timeline, which is fine because there are plenty of external tension points to keep the chemistry and banter fueled.
