Between the Lines

Stella’s love life is simple, if you keep it casual, you keep it safe. Relationships only lead to heartbreak, and she’s had enough of that. She never saw a reason for this to change. But when her best friend raises her concerns about Stella’s choices, she’s left rethinking everything.

Luke’s family never lets him forget that he is everything his parents wished he wasn’t, tattooed, aspirations of bartending, no care for the perfect plan his parents laid out for him. But when they make it clear he needs to bring a respectable date to his family reunion to announce his brother's engagement, he doesn’t know what to do.

Until Stella agrees to play along.

Fake date to keep Stella’s friends unstressed and to keep Luke’s family off his back. Then walk away unscathed. But as fake touches turn to real glances, both Stella and Luke are forced to face reality, whether they want to or not.

Falling in love was never part of the plan, and now they must decide if love is worth the risk, or if they’re better off playing it safe.

Fake dating romances are usually an instant win for me, so I went in expecting all the swoons and slow-burn chemistry. Instead, I ended up feeling more frustrated than invested. 👎🏼

Stella’s a new teacher’s assistant just trying to figure life out, and Luke’s the bartender who’s always been overlooked. When he overhears Stella’s best friend worrying about her casual hookups, he offers a deal—fake date him to ease her friend’s mind, and he’ll get a date for his parents’ New Year’s Eve party.

It’s supposed to be simple… until feelings get involved.

Honestly, I struggled with this one. Stella came off as careless and immature (she jumped from one hookup to the next with zero standards for herself 🥲) and it honestly made it hard to like her. Luke, on the other hand, constantly acted like no one cared about him even when people clearly did. Both of them kept pushing away the love and support right in front of them, which got frustrating fast.

I did enjoy the (kinda) found family vibes and Luke reconnecting with his brother at the end (it was one of the few moments that actually felt genuine.) But the unnecessary third-act breakup and lack of character growth made it hard to stay invested.

Cute premise, but the immaturity and self-sabotage made it tough to truly connect with the story. 😔

I’ve read my fair share of romance novels, but this one truly stands apart from the crowd

First of all the characters are truly vivid and feel so real. Stella is an absolute force. She's strong but vulnerable, sharp yet kind and refreshingly self-aware. She's just as likable as she is inspiring.

Equally Luke is layered, thoughtful, emotionally mature, and genuinely respectful. He is, however, also flawed a detail that adds depth and makes him feel all the more human. He should be the fine print for any partner 😍.

One of my most favorite elements of this story is the emphasis on friendship and found family. These relationships are just as fleshed out and powerful as the central romance. You come for the love story, but you stay for the way these characters become a family, in the truest and most beautiful sense.

An element I often find lacking is the pacing. However, in this case the plot moves with purpose — there is no unnecessary drama or filler. Every moment serves the story or the characters, and you never feel lost or rushed.

As for tropes, Gibson takes the familiar element of fake dating (as well as others) and creates something so unique and refreshing. Nothing feels cliché or forced. The story discusses mature topics in a way that not only enlightens you but also helps you understand them on a deeper, more meaningful level.

Calling this a romance novel feels too simple. It’s an honest, funny, emotional, and utterly unforgettable tale of love and friendship but also of self discovery. This book will surprise you and stay with you long after the final page.

It pains me to write this review but this is my opinion. There is a reader out there for this book, especially based on the other reviews.

For me it was unfortunately amateur-ish in the details and it kept pulling me out of the story. These are hyper specific but as an example: the FMC and the side characters are referenced as going out to the bars until the sun comes up. But this book is set in Australia and there are pretty strict rules where most business close by 2AM if not at midnight. Additionally, the FMC talks about a frequent routine she does with her friends, they go out to the bars and then stay up (again until the sun rises) cozy in the living room chatting about the night. If you are drunk from the bars even at the youthful age of 20-21 this kind of night sounds like a one off otherwise you are definitely falling asleep. There were just so many things including how the FMC’s uni functioned with getting her degree while also working that just didn’t make sense either and felt like not a lot of research was done about this world.

So much of this just felt written in some kind of magical college world and I couldn’t suspend my disbelief enough.

Thank you to love notes PR for the eARC.

I really enjoyed this book, it touched my emotions (I was crying at the end) but also had me swooning and laughing. This book started out as a pretty simple sort of fake dating thing. She’s a no commitment sort of girl but he’s more of an all in guy, and I guess that sort of sounds like a disaster in the making. Stella needs to get her best friend off her back and Luke needs to prove to his parents that he’s doing good. This is the best kind of he falls first AND HARDER. This man is so dedicated and he’s willing to wait as long as it takes. He wins her over slowly, with each caring action that he did, and he was literally the sweetest. Honestly both of them have such sad backstories but in the end it ties up really really well. I personally really liked the ending, I felt so much. Luke resolved his family problems and he made up with his brother. As someone with a sibling, I get what it feels like to be compared and my brother and I were at each other’s heads for years before we worked it out. And I loved how Stella started seeing how strong she was, through the help of Luke and her best friend Keet. I loved Keet so much! I really enjoyed this book and give it a 4/5

wasn't really invested in this one. Stella had no standards for herself. I was out off by all of her casual hookups.
and Luke had lie Self esteem. both just seemed super needy and couldn't see what they were worth. this book is a pass for me.

I absolutely loved every second of this book! I love a fake dating trope so I was thoroughly content whilst reading this. I didn’t expect to laugh so much at this book, however I don’t think I stopped smiling from the first couple chapters! The characters felt so real, each and every one of them. I loved how it felt like I was inside the book whilst i was reading.

Luke and Stella start off as ‘enemies’. Stella keeps Luke at arms length due to her past and doesn’t want anything to do with Luke. Eventually, Luke comes to her with a deal of fake dating, to get bot her friend and his parents off of each of their backs. Stella agrees and from that point forward they begin their journey together. This is a sloooooow burn, but it was written so beautifully that I couldn’t even tell. The tension was OFF THE CHARTS, and the banter they shared between each other had me laughing continuously.

Stella is an absolute force to be reckoned with. She’s smart and witty, and has the upmost love for those around her and her job. She treats (most) people with kindness and she’s very self-aware of who she is and what she does.

Luke is a very layered character, he puts on an act about not caring and being happy but underneath all that exterior is a boy who is begging to be put first and loved conditionally. Both these characters have their own baggage and struggles, and when they finally open up to each other and show their real sides, there is no stopping them from moving forwards

The dynamic not only between the MC’s but also their friends is so wholesome. They all get along from the get go, and support each other where they need to. They’re a funny bunch, and there are many scenes where I was laughing out loud reading them.

I cannot wait to continue with this series! Thank you for the ARC! 🫶🏼

I went into Between the Lines expecting a light fake-dating story... but it turned out to be so much more.

Luke Astor and Stella Faraday went into a fake relationship to help each other out, not anticipating that they would find much more than what they agreed to in the first place.
Right from the get go, it’s impossible not to fall in love with who Luke is. He is the kind of friend (and boyfriend) we all deserve — loyal, intuitive, generous, caring, and funny. All the more impressive considering the dysfunctional family he comes from.
Then there’s Stella: loyal, strong, and fiercely caring, even as she carries the fear and shame left by a traumatic relationship.
The chemistry between them is off the charts — and oh, the banter! SWEET BANTER! Definitely one of my favorite parts of this book.
The secondary characters are exactly what both of them need, a true found family that feels a million times better than a biological one.

Reading this book I’ve laughed and cried many times, and have smiled every time the author made reference to things I love: Taylor Swift, Bob’s Burgers, 27 Dresses, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days...

In the end, this whole book feels like a warm hug — like what Phoebe tells Mike at their wedding: “When I was growing up I didn’t have a normal mom and dad or a regular family like everybody else, and I always knew that something was missing. But now I’m standing here today knowing that I have everything I'm ever going to need. You are my family.”

I received an ARC of this book, all opinions are my own.

First and foremost, I absolutely love this cover. It was one of the reasons I eagerly requested this book as an ARC! The moody and dark tone perfectly encapsulates Lucas’ dream of owning his own bar, and I love how it represents his aspirations. This captivating story delves into the transformative journey of coming of age, exploring the challenges of navigating external pressures, self-doubt, and invisible scars.

Stella, a college student, has endured past hurts and control from men, leading her to live life to the fullest and avoid romantic entanglements. On the other hand, Lucas, or Luke, yearns to open his own bar with his friends but feels inadequate compared to his parents’ expectations. To alleviate their pressure, Stella and Lucas strike a deal to fake date. Initially, they maintain a platonic relationship, but through honest communication, solo time together, fun dates, and unwavering support, they gradually lean on each other and develop feelings for one another.

In my opinion, Lucas and Stella’s time together stands out as my favorite scenes. Their banter is both hilarious and electrifying, and the tension between them is palpable. Stella is a vibrant and passionate individual, often displaying her emotions outwardly. However, when she’s with Lucas, she reveals her true self, allowing readers to delve deeper into her character.

A significant aspect of the story is Stella’s realization that she must learn to love herself before she can love anyone else. This realization prompts her to seek help, and her friends and Lucas become her invaluable support system. With their unwavering encouragement, Stella has the potential to build a strong foundation for her future.

Lucas is a sweet, caring, and supportive individual, but he also possesses a complex character. He keeps his emotions hidden, but when he finally opens up to his friends and brother, it’s a moment of profound growth.

Overall, the story is engaging, the found family aspect is beautifully portrayed, and the characters are flawed and complex, yet ever-evolving. This debut novel was incredibly intriguing, and I eagerly anticipate reading more from this author!

Between the Lines is a good fake dating romance . The story is about a teacher’s assistant Stella and a bartender name Luke. Stella is smart, kind and self- aware of the type of person she is. Luke is selfless, kind, heart of gold and care more about his friends then himself. I found both main characters too be likable and relatable in their own ways. You could feel the chemistry between Stella and Luke the moment they come into each other lives. They are there for each other during the hard times. One thing that I loved about their relationship is that they didn’t push each other. Meaning, they didn’t give the other the “ you are either with me now or not with me at all” line. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow throughout the book.

I thought that pace and flow of the book was good. I thought the writing was good too. The story was easy to follow. The steamy parts were will written and didn’t go over the top. Also the steamy scenes didn’t over take the book. The secondary characters (Stella and Luke’s friends) were good. They were type of the friends you would want to have. Funny, supportive, and got along. They added to the story in a good way.

Overall, Between the Lines, is good fake romance. With both good main and secondary characters. The writing and pace was good. From the first you page become invested in Stella and Luke’s story and stay invested all the way till the end.

Let me just tell you, this did not feel like a book that was over 400 pages. It immediately drew me and I lost track of time. I didn’t want to put it down and ended up reading until at least 2am last night. And of course, I had to pick it right back up and finish reading today. I absolutely loved the characters and how the story evolved. This reminded me a lot of a movie called “Holidate” and I am NOT disappointed. Because I loved that movie. Stella’s personality showed that she was feisty, stubborn, but also caring and sweet. Lucas was your typical “hottie” but deep down he has a heart of gold and cares more about his friends than he does himself. He’s selfless and kind. Under the tattooed arms he’s a big teddy bear. Between the two they needed a “girlfriend/boyfriend” situation for different reasons. But when they began fake dating—rules applied. Don’t fall in love. The banter, the jokes, the tension, the sarcasm—every bit of their interactions were genuine and heartfelt. It became a friendship that neither wanted to lose. I loved reading the growth between their relationship and the growth they found within themselves. Not only did I love them, I loved their friends too. Keets, Rory and Beck—they helped make that story. They all had different personalities but they all meshed together so easily. A true found family between them. I definitely recommend this book if you want a fast paced, entertaining and heartfelt read. One that you can’t help but laugh, get mad at and then have tears of joy in the end. Outstanding debut.

Firstly I wish to thank Love Notes PR for allowing me to read this advanced reader copy (ARC)! This was a lovely read as a beacon of light amidst the spooky or thriller books I’ve picked up in honor of spooky season. I really liked enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of SP’s works! I love me a good fake dating plot and the writing style made it even easier to nearly INHALE. I finished this book within a few hours. SP’s writing style is clear, easy to follow, and added to how easy it was to settle into Stella and Luke’s realm and perspective - ps LOVE duo perspectives in books!! I really also enjoyed the character development and growth. From both Goldie and Lucas (you’ll understand the cute name as the story cutely unfolds)! Besides lightening up my mood amidst spooky season, I really appreciated how SP tenderly wrote both characters, their past experiences, difficulty with family dynamics, and really guided us readers in a manner that led us to be so proud of both characters and their growth. Definitely recommend!!

Not everyone’s scars are visible. That truly was such a theme in Between the Lines by S.P. Gibson.

Between the Lines is book 1 in her Black Lantern series. A new adult romance with tropes of fake dating, he falls first, and a found family.

Luke Astor deserves a medal for dealing with his cruel family. It broke my heart to see how he was treated. All Luke wanted was to be loved for who he was.

Stella Faraday has faced battles. After a volatile relationship leaves her view of herself and the opposite sex skewed, she has sworn off all relationships. She values casual sex with no attachments.

When Luke needs a date for a family reunion, and Stella needs her friends off her back about her rendezvous, the two strike up a deal to fake date.

However, is it ever truly fake? These two have banter, chemistry, and all the tension that make them perfect for each other.

I loved the personal growth both Stella and Luke made throughout this book. It is a read you don’t want to miss.

Not your typical romance—Between the Lines is a heartful, layered story about friendship, found family, and the search for identity.

This is a slow burn that takes its time, but for good reason: it handles some tough, real-life issues with care and nuance. At its heart is Luke—a vulnerable, sweet MMC who’s impossible not to fall for—and Stella, a sharp, strong-willed FMC you’ll wish was your best friend. Their relationship walks the fine line between friendship and love, blurring the boundaries in the most authentic way.

But the story isn’t just about them. The side characters are fantastic—fully fleshed out and worth knowing more about. It’s the kind of book where you come for the romance but stay for the people. Gibson does a beautiful job balancing emotional complexity with warmth and hope.

If you’re looking for a romance that’s more than just love at first sight, and you're okay with a slow emotional build, Between the Lines delivers something memorable.

Enemies to lovers, fake dating, and found family — what more could you want? Between the Lines by S.P. Gibson delivers it all in one compelling read.

This college romance follows Stella (aka Goldie) and Luke (Lucas) in a story that’s fast-paced and totally addictive — I read it in less than 24 hours!

While I loved the main characters, my favorites were actually their best friends: Keets, Beck, and Rory. Keets is the ultimate girls’ girl and never hesitated to call Stella out when needed. Rory and Beck were so warm and inviting, and I especially loved Beck’s idea of a weekly "family night" with the whole friend group. Honestly, I wish I had a circle of friends like that.

Although the book is an easy, enjoyable read, it does touch on some heavy topics — so be sure to check the trigger warnings beforehand.

Huge thanks to S.P. Gibson and Love Notes PR for the opportunity to read an ARC of this heartfelt and fun novel!

This was a fun, heartfelt read with great characters.

I picked this up because I love fake dating stories, and this one did not disappoint. From the first chapter, I was pulled in by the humour and the energy between the characters. Stella and Luke start off not liking each other much, but once they agree to fake date, everything changes.

Stella is strong, smart, and very protective of herself. She’s been through a lot, and it shows in how she handles people. Luke is charming and funny, but there’s more to him than what he lets others see. I liked how both of them had their own struggles and how they slowly let each other in.

Their banter was one of my favorite parts. The friend group in this book was amazing.

Even though the book had some serious moments, it never felt too heavy. I also liked how the story focused on personal growth, not just romance.

4.5* - Rounded up to 5...

There is so much emotion, and emotional baggage, in this book. I loved it! To watch the Stella and Luke grow as they navigated their fake-dating, was inspirational. Their journeys were each so hard, and I loved how they found their HEA.

As a debut novel for SP Gibson, her ability to convey the fears and emotions of the characters was really good, and she moved the story along really well. There were no times where you felt like you were missing anything. I did feel at times that I wanted more of their "in betweens". :)

I loved the cast of characters, and I'm hoping we get to see all of them find their own HEA's, including Leon!

Overall, a truly fabulous read!

I received a free copy of this book through Love Notes PR and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’d love to thank the author for giving me the opportunity for reading this novel, it was a lovely experience..💋‼️‼️‼️

Where do I start? This book captivated me so deeply, I could not put it down. And I enjoyed this story more than I thought. The characters were chefs kiss. The way they both collided, the development throughout the story was amazing, not just the MC’s but also between the friendships around them. The tension?⁉️⁉️ So high that I could literally feel it in my bones. Everything was perfect. I loved their personalities so much, I got to connect with them better. So many emotions I went through, I laughed and smiled like a little kid.♥️♥️♥️

Overall, this book was one of my favs, I cannot wait for the rest of the series because I’m hooked, and I’m eager for more. Thank you so much to the author once again, I can’t wait for what you have next.♥️♥️

Arc Review!!

Between the Lines is one of those stories that quietly sneaks up on you. Stella believes keeping things casual means keeping her heart safe, and Luke’s the kind of guy who’s long since stopped trying to live up to his family’s expectations. When the two end up fake dating—her to keep friends off her back, him to survive a family reunion—they don’t expect it to mean anything. But of course, it does.

What starts as a simple fake-dating setup turns into a heartfelt story about vulnerability, self-worth, and learning to let love in even when it scares you. Both Stella and Luke feel real—flawed, funny, and guarded in ways that make their chemistry all the more satisfying. The banter is sharp, the emotions feel genuine, and Wilson balances warmth and heartbreak beautifully.

It’s not just a romance—it’s about learning that love doesn’t have to be perfect to be right.

This story follows Stella and Luke who start off as enemies.
Now oh my goodness.
When both mc's have been through things it honestly breaks my heart because poor Luke, he deserves so much for having to deal with a family like his. And Stella, she is trying to find herself again after coming from a toxic relationship.
I am so glad they found each other because they deserve better and someone who actually treats them the way they deserve to be treated 😭🫶

The banter between these two and their chemistry?? Omg! (I love when it's noticible for the readers because then we really love ans root for the main characters even more and want them to get together immediately) Who would ever believe they're fake dating!

Favorite Quote: “Whenever I touch you, it feels like the world stops. Like everything that has ever happened, happened just to lead us to this moment. To the moment where you and I were together. Each moment we’ve spent together has shown me a love I didn’t know I deserved; you’ve shown me that love.” ❤️😭

This book was a cute and easy read! I loved how sweet and patient Luke is. He allows Stella to be herself while healing her in many ways. I love how real all the characters are and how Luke allows himself to be emotional. All of their friends are supportive. Everyone should have a friend like Keets! The boys had me laughing, especially when their Halloween costumes were revealed.

Thank you so much SP Gibson and Love Notes PR ❤️

This is one of those times I truly wish we could do half-ratings because this story was the perfect amount of spice, fluff and a touch of angst.

Admittedly my favorite part was the epilogue! I loved that it bounced ten years in to their future and we got a glimpse of Stella and Lucas’ future together. They both get their dreams and family. I loved it, it was perfect for them.

It was an easy, quick read while still being enjoyable. Stella and Lucas’ fake dating felt real enough and developed in such a slow, sweet way! I think the only thing I truly didn’t care for was Stella’s six-month waiting near the end — it didn’t feel super realistic someone would hang around for an indefinite amount of time in hopes someone comes back (but that’s fiction I suppose!).

Thank you to the author and publisher for my early copy of this book!

I was very excited to read this story as fake dating tropes are usually instant favorites for me. There were lots of moments that made me lose interest, but it was mainly that that characters often felt immature and had less growth than I expected. I also am not a huge fan of an unnecessary third-act breakup, so that was a disappointment for me.

I did love the found family aspect of the story and enjoyed the dual POVs, along with the slight enemies to friends to lovers trope that was intermixed with the fake dating trope. This was definitely a cute premise for a story, but I was definitely left wanting more from both the plot and the characters.

This book's an easy 4.5 ⭐️
I love the characters, the relationships, the struggles, the friendships, the found family, the redemption.
These characters were strong. Luke and Stella deserve to find each other in every lifetime. I also have immense respect for the author talking about Stella's story to open the conversation about what she went through also and raise awarness. Luke deserves the world and I am so happy he has the found family he has in the book and I also love how he and Leon's relationship turn out.

This book was giggles, laugh, tears and feet kicking. I loved every single second of it.

A fake dating storyline with a refreshing twist. It took me a few chapters, but then I was hooked. Luke… sigh what a man. He’s charming, grounded, and impossible not to fall for. I instantly cared about Stella. She’s relatable, vulnerable, and strong in all the right ways.
What really stood out to me was the found family, it gave the story so much warmth and heart. And the ending? I actually liked it more than the typical happily ever after. It felt real and perfectly fitting for their journey.
Id like to see more into Leons life, there's more to that story to explore.

Lucas comes from a rich family, but he walks away from his family because they don't love him the way they love his little brother. Lucas hated his brother because of his parents. Lucas made up with his little brother after so many years of being a part of him.
Stella had a boyfriend who abused her mentally and sexualy up to the point that she didn't get nor wanted a new relationship or boyfriend. Stella learned to build herself up, and she started to become herself after so long. They both had friends who loved, supposed them.

What starts out as a fun fake-dating story ends up being way more emotional than I expected. Stella’s careful and guarded, while Luke’s easygoing but clearly fighting his own battles. I love how realistic it feels them figure each other out and themselves.

The writing balances humor, vulnerability, and warmth. The side characters actually add to the story instead of just filling space, and the emotional moments don’t feel cheesy. It’s about learning to let people in, even when it feels risky.

The story is sweet and grounded 🫶🏻

I loved Stella and Luke's story and how its possible to experience trauma in completely different ways and still be there to support each other. Stella and her best friends relationship is the type of friendship that everyone would be lucky to have. Throughout the book the transition between light and funny and overwhelming and emotional was incredibly well done. If you like books with fake dating, found family, not shying away from trauma, the MMC falling first, and healing this book is for you.

Thank you to SP Gibson and Love Notes PR for the opportunity to read this one.

At the beginning I loved the banter between Luke and Stella. I really enjoyed the back and forth and I’m a big sucker for fake dating. And that bedroom scene had me cackling!

The tension and chemistry was a nice and easy read, plus I love to support a fellow Aussie.

I got a little lost in the last 20% it got a bit slow for my liking but it pulled back around for a nice little HEA.

Overall it was a good read !

SP Gibson wrote an amazing book. This has characters that are layered and real. Stella is a girl that does not put too much into relationships. She keeps it all surface level so she doesn't get her heart broken. Luke is the guy that has pressure from his family to fit into their expectations. The solution....a fake relationship.

This book is written with such love and truth. Highly recommend.

I loved this book...

This is a story about Stella and Lucas. Stella is a girl with a past that hurts and this makes her avoid any romance. Luke is a sweet and caring guy. They decided to fake date. Both learn to open up to other people and the growth they each experience great.
