'Time counts now more than ever. Each decision you make can craft your life into exactly what you want it to be'.

Layla has worked hard to get to where she is, working as a corporate lawyer in London. It's come at a cost though, she has absolutely no personal life and no time for herself, but she was always taught that if you work hard, success will follow. Angus, on the other hand wants for nothing, needs money for nothing and well, his life is pretty much nothing. Both feel like they've reached a cross roads in their life when they see an ad for a life experiment and apply. What unfolds is more than an experiment, it is life.

I feel like I’m a bit of an outlier here, giving this book a 3.5 stars, but although I loved the premise and the concept of appreciating and making the most of the life you’ve got now, at times I felt I was on a bit of a hamster wheel with the storyline and pace. There were some glorious, deep and insightful moments but they were followed by paralysing anxiety from the characters. Overall, The Life Experiment is a good read, and if you're interested in characters who find themselves, as well as a bit of romance, you should certainly give it a go.

'No one can go back, no matter how much we wish we could. All we can do is look to the future'.

Yes people, I read a romance novel 🩷 Don’t faint! I don’t read romance but I do read Jess Kitching books because she is incredibly talented and such a beautiful woman. Congratulations on The Life Experiment, it is wonderful and I am so happy for you!!

Emotional, thought provoking, inspiring and so much more. Would you want to know the date that you would die? enter The Life Experiment. Layla and Angus are both incredibly unhappy with the path that their lives are taking and sign up. The day they find out their results is the day they meet in a cafe and can’t stop thinking about each other. But this information has changed the way they both think and see things.

What would you do? Would you keep living the way that you are or make massive changes? Would you hide away or would you embrace life? it is beautiful story and Jess has just smashed it once again. Read the author notes, her story of how this book came to be is so heartbreaking but lovely.

Just beautiful Jess, you made this crime reader with a dark heart cry so much. Hug your loved ones, you just don’t know what tomorrow brings.

Thanks you so much to Simon and Schuster for my advanced copy to read. Jess you deserve all the success with this amazing book. Thank you Dan Pilkington for believing in this story and bring it to the world. Out on July 29th

Heartwarming. Moving. Impossible to put down.

I don’t usually annotate my books, but this one had me reaching for a pen again and again. I found myself underlining so many beautiful phrases—words that resonated so deeply I wanted to carry them with me.

This story is more than just a love story; it’s a journey of self-discovery and appreciation for life itself. The whole concept of The Life Experiment is fascinating, but what really gripped me was how emotional, heartfelt, and thought-provoking the story became. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and at times it truly stopped me in my tracks to reflect.

Jess Kitching has written a book that leaves a mark—a novel that makes you appreciate the fragility and beauty of life. It’s not one I’ll forget any time soon.

Big thanks to Simon & Schuster for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Known for her clever thrillers, Jess wanders into another genre for her next book.
And after dipping her pen in, she comes up with The Life Experiment.
A brilliant, well written and sharp romance.
A love story with a drip of thriller elements.
Most of all, it’s delightful, smart, entertaining, fun and shines with a spotlight.
OPM Discoveries seeks individuals for The Life Experiment.
The research can estimate when you die.
Corporate lawyer Layla is successful, relationships are a no and she is a workaholic but she is concerned she is missing something.
Handsome Angus, comes from wealth, prestige and privilege but after the death of his brother and a bad investment, he wonders if there’s more out in the world for him.
Both sign up for the exercise, not knowing the other has and by chance meet.
Sparks fly and life takes a turn……
Set in London, this romantic adventure is going to be a major hit.
The banter between characters, especially the two leads is so natural, real and genuine, it makes it more enjoyable for the reader.
Let’s hope Jess continues to dabble in both genres as she excels at both.
Very addictive, very authentic and very charming.

Oh my goodness, this beautiful book is going to wrap you in a warm hug and not let you go! It’s beautifully perfect 🧡

Layla and Angus are two strangers who have both hit crossroads in their very different lives, they are going through everyday motions rather than living them to the full.

When an ad appears for a life experiment they both have nothing to loose and apply

They are both accepted and after the first in person interview a chance encounter at a cafe brings them into each others lives

As they both start to look at their lives differently their new found friendship becomes a new confident, but are they really being truthful to not just each other but themselves?

The Life Experiment will give you all the feels in all the right ways. I devoured it and couldn’t put it down. Looking through the lens of Layla and Angus with some mixed media thrown in and the fabulous side characters had me turning page after page.

Add this contemporary romance to your TBR stat!

Highly recommend 🧡

Thank you so much @netgalley & @simonschusterau for my gifted arc copy, this in no way has influenced my review

Oh boy was this a complex read. There are tender moments of beautiful vulnerability in which we see the characters grow in resilience, strength and understanding. There are raw moments of hurt and pain, of grief that feels inescapable and overwhelming. There are moments of acceptance and contentment, and moments of frustration at the injustices of life. It's both beautiful and heartbreaking, and it's a real privilege to witness the full spectrum of the human experience with love, loss and grief - particularly when it's constructed so beautifully.

When you read this book, you try to recall the other romances Jess Kitching has written because SURELY this cannot be her first - she fits far too comfortably into the genre for this book to be her debut. What I do know after reading this, is that if Jess doesn't write another book in this genre, we will be having words because you can't just give me a taste and then never let me have another bite. It's, simply, just too good.

A tearjerker, a heart warmer, a very good reminder to ask yourself "how are you spending your life?" and whether you're happy with that answer. A wonderful reading experience - one that I will be thinking about for the longest time to come.

5/5 ⭐. Without a doubt.

p.s. do yourself a favour and read this with a bit of choccy and some emotional support tissues

What an amazing story this is.

From the heartfelt dedication, to the epilogue and author acknowledgments, this is one incredible story.

An experiment that can tell you when you will die.

Two people at a crossroads in their lives join the experiment not knowing what they will be told.

Two people given very different outcomes about when they will die, and when they meet by chance one day their lives will never be the same again. Can they change the outcomes they were given?

Layla, a hardworking young lawyer and Angus, a trust fund baby with no inspiration in his life, both join an experiment as it intrigues them. Neither has any notion of what is to come and how it will change everything. And the twist? Was it justified? Who has the right to do that?

I got all the feels reading this book. It grabbed my attention, and my heart and mind, and took me on an emotional journey. The characters are perfect. They are relatable and realistic. The alternating chapters kept the story flowing and I was right there with Layla and Angus all the way, through every emotion, every second guess, every epiphany moment they had.

The Life Experiment made me think about so much in my life. Am I happy? Am I fulfilled? Am I a good person? Could, or should, I be doing more with my life? I love it when a book make me get a bit reflective about me and makes me think about the bigger picture.

It seems that Jess is very adept at not only writing thrillers but also a life affirming, bitter sweet, make you think love story. Bravo!

You can breathe. Jess Kitching has switched genres, but she is still utterly brilliant - you can let out that breath you didn't know you were holding!

The Life Experiment is poignant and thought-provoking, a love story that spans literary and contemporary fiction to blend in elements of romance and family drama. The result? A narrative that both warms your heart, and unsettles it (in a good way).

Jess has a brilliant talent with words and seeing her grow from publishing her debut novel to a bold and beautiful genre switch with The Life Experiment has been a delight. Fans of Beth O'Leary will find elements of Beth's gentle approach to romantic fiction in Jess's writing style whilst those who enjoy the magical realism elements of Matt Haig's books will resonate with this too. Jess has a genre approach that is all her own, which makes for compelling reads that will challenge your perception of life, love and mortality.

Two lost souls decide to sign up for an experiment which they will be paid handsomely for and will find out when they are going to die.
Layla has come from humble beginnings and is a lawyer determined to make her parents proud. She has no life as she spends almost every evening at work for no thanks.
Angus is a wealthy young man and comes from old money but has no purpose in life as he doesn’t work and spends too much time with friends in the same boat partying.
They have to lodge their feelings every day and rate themselves.
Then they meet but neither knows that the other is also in the experiment. They can’t tell as they signed agreements to keep it confidential.
I loved this book, the first I have read by this author - it kept me turning the pages and is told in alternating chapters but moves along at a steady pace. Perfect reading for Women’s Fiction and Romance readers. It makes you think, what would you do if you found out when you are going to die!

Thank you Simon & Schuster and Jess Kitching for this read.

Jess has truly shown what a brilliant author she is, as she has gone from producing addictive thrillers to this moving read.

I was utterly hooked reading about our two protagonists and the way their lives were both similar and yet very different. This book explores both through multiple POVs and really gets deep into each life. Jess's vivid descriptions brought them to life and I felt that I was feeling all their grief, pain, anger, happiness and love.

The idea of an experiment that allows you to find out when your time may be up had me questioning how I would act if I had the chance to find out. This theme through the book asks readers to take a look into their life.

Tangled between this experiment, we see a deep growing connection that had me smiling multiple times. In addition there are some twists along the way which keeps it interesting and unique.

Overall this book was a brilliant read. It was light and funny, yet emotional and had me thinking about my own life. Can't wait to see what Jess produces next!

Out 29th July!

The raw emotion I felt when I finished reading this book was crazy. Tears were released. It made me question what life and living are about. How we can change our direction.

An experiment on when you will die is what Layla and Angus have signed up for. They will both be thrown by the outcome of their results, which impact their lives.

This book will take you through twists and turns, hard times, good times, family secrets, friendships, finding love, loss, and new directions.

Loved your book, didn't want to put down, or want it to finish, Jess 📖 ❤️

I thought this book was very okay.

For me, the story was a bit flat, which made it hard to really get into. If anything, the book read like a first draft. The bones were there but I wish there was more meat to the story. I didn't feel for any of the characters as much as I'd like to have and the chemistry between Layla and Angus could have been dialed up a bit more.

I definitely understood the emotions and message the author was trying to evoke, but I think it might have landed harder for me if the story and the characters had more depth. I don't regret reading it but I also don't think you're missing out on much if you choose to skip it.

He is frozen in a cycle of long hours and lazy days, watching time pass him by. Unaware of each other’s participation in the experiment, Layla and Angus meet by chance in a café the same day they get their shocking results.

If you’ve read Jess Kitching’s previous books, you’d have noticed that this one took on a different genre. And I loved it!

Jess didn’t waste any time at all with the confronting question for Layla right from the beginning: what would give your life meaning? Layla’s hustle and sacrifice would immediately feel relatable to many people, including myself. I read this book at the time when I felt I didn’t have enough time for everything important in my life, so I nodded a lot at Layla’s internal monologues and self evaluations.

Oddly enough, Angus being at the opposite spectrum of having too much time at his disposal would also be relatable to many people! The fact that both main characters were three dimensional and well written made the story even more impactful for me. I actually read the entire book in a day - I was that invested.

I would highly recommend checking out the Author’s Note to understand Jess’ original inspiration to write this story, because it’d elevate it even more! Not only that, the book dedication already made my heart skip a beat as I saw our bookstagram friend and legend, Lily Raiti, mentioned.

My heart was sore from the reading experience for days, it really gave me a good book hangover. I’d highly recommend you to pick this up if you want a romance story with a deeper undertone.

The Life Experiment poses a very big question. Would you want to know the date of your death? If so, how would that knowledge affect the time you have left? Depending on our own personal experiences, I’m sure our responses would be hugely varied.

Layla Cannon and Angus Fairview-Whitley come to this experimental study, from very diverse perspectives, for different reasons. Layla is working class, with a warm family and a strong work ethic. Angus comes from money, meaning he has no need to work, and therefore feels he has no direction in his life. Both see the advertisement looking for volunteers for this unusual experiment, and this is where our story begins.

I became a huge fan of Jess Kitching when I read Lucky Number 11, when she blew me away with how tightly she gripped me, and how emotionally involved I became with her characters. Though in a completely different genre, she did just this with The Life Experiment too. The author writes with great emotional depth, which really resonates with me. Jess’ words make me more than just a reader. She draws me in to the pages, in to the lives and hearts of the characters; bringing out my emotions and empathy.

The Life Experiment is more than a love story. It challenges you to look beyond assumptions, to see the people themselves, as individuals. It also examines the complexities of the family dynamic, which is something everyone can understand. The book speaks of the issues we all face in life; love, loss and fear of the unknown. When you decide to pick up this lovely book, just make sure you have the tissues ready.

It’s a special thing when one of your most anticipated reads of the year, becomes one of the best, too!

What’s it about, you might be wondering? Well, as the title suggests… an experiment, in which carefully selected participants (if they so consent) are given the chance to find out when and how they will die.

Now, while part of the population might be thinking, why on earth would anyone be interested in that?, at least two people are - and that’s where our main characters come in: Layla, a lawyer in her late twenties, and Angus, a trust fund baby in his early thirties.

The pair have no idea what the study actually involves until it’s almost underway, but they’re both stuck in lives that no longer satisfy them, and they sign up longing for something more. The day that their end dates are handed over, Layla and Angus’ paths cross completely coincidentally - and just as they hoped, everything about life as they know it starts changing.

I won’t say another word, other than a few to urge you to add it to your TBR, because this is one of those books that you just HAVE to read!

It touches your heart, imprints on your soul, and - at the risk of sounding really cheesy - gives you an entirely new outlook on and appreciation for life.

Infinite stars and a never-ending recommendation - I already want to read it again!

Heartfelt thanks to Jess Kitching and the team at Simon & Schuster Australia for providing me with an arc via Netgalley.

The two characters texting back and forth constantly but adding an “x” EVERYTIME, killled me. “Hey, how are you x” “I am good, you x” “i love cheese x”, etc etc like wtf? No one speaks like that and if they do, I’d block them because it’s annoying AF. Layla annoyed me a little about not wanting to tell Angus her feelings because of her ‘death sentence’, even more reason to hook up with him immediately and make the most of your short life? Angus hiding his rich, so fair. I’d have the time of my life being rich and not having to work, don’t understand his complaints. Also, I feel like they only find happiness because of each other, makes me a little sick. Like the codependency is a bit much. I mean, yes they both found their passion but they also linked all their happiness to each other - not a fan of that. If my fling rocked up to my dad’s funeral to tell me he loved me, I’d be pissed off. The best part of this book was the last chapter from the psychologist point of view

Branching in a new direction, I was unsure how this author was going to go especially since I loved her previous thrillers! I'm pleased to say that she knocked it out of the park with this book. Angus and Layla both enter into a life experiment where they are told when they will each die. For both, the diagnosis is not what they expected. When the two become friends, neither knows about the study. And as they become closer, it becomes difficult knowing their time might be coming to an end. I have no words for this story. With so much character growth, emotions galore and how unputdownable it was, be sure you read it!

What would you do if you found out your date of death?

The life experiment is a dual pov read, it touches on a lot of different aspects of life, love and death. Kitching’s writing reminds me of Matt Haig and Beth O’Leary, I was drawn in from the beginning.

This book is thought provoking, bittersweet and truly tugs at the heartstrings.

The second slide was a truly powerful scene to read about Layla and her family accept and apologise to their bodies. As someone who grew up in the 90’s+00’s i love seeing the narrative about bodies change!
I truly adored it! And will be picking up a physical copy too!

The idea of the storyline was lovely but it was too cliche and predictable for me.

I also had issues with the following
• the main characters always referring to their parents by their name instead of mum and dad
• the main characters signing off every text message with an “x” - people who are choosing to be “friends” don’t do that”
• Layla feeling obliged to tell Angus about her death date, sorry no she can keep that to herself if she chooses versus angus lying about his Job/ lifestyle was uncalled for

Where do I begin!!!!!!??? This was incredibly life affirming, insightful and beautiful. I was moved to tears so many times, both happy and sad. This is the kind of book our society really needs right now. To reflect on what really matters, how we live our lives, and how to define our value and purpose. For anyone who is lost, sad or simply human, you must pick this up.

Thank you Simon & Schuster for this book!

I have been a fan of Jess since her first book. It's been such an incredible journey watching her writing truly blossom and be a part of her journey by reading her stories.

I really loved The Life Experiment. The premise was something I had not read before, such an engaging story with characters I cared about. A tumultuous love story where your heart pulls you one way while your brain pulls you the other.

I will read anything and everything Jess writes as it only gets better with each book. Congratulations on another hit Jess!
