‘A gorgeous, uplifting hug of a book’ Laura Wood, Under Your Spell
Lizzy Brinks has it all under control. At least that’s what she’d tell you.
Smart, calm and just a little terrifying, she’s the woman who fixes everything – except her own life. Between caring for her family, wrangling her escape-artist cat Pebble, and keeping her boss Esme Kaminska’s art empire afloat, Lizzy doesn’t have time for romance.
Then Esme connects with influencer Ajax Banks, and Lizzy’s world collides with his right-hand man, Oliver MacLeod. He’s charming. He’s infuriating. He’s far too good-looking to be trustworthy. And now she’s supposed to work with him on a catastrophic new dating app idea.
When a work trip to Venice leads to some disastrous revelations, Lizzy must decide if she can stay cool when her heart’s on the line.
Because sometimes, love is the one thing you just can’t plan for.

I read this in a single day — the perfect book for a sunny afternoon. It had me laughing out loud within the first chapter, and I genuinely couldn’t put it down. Lizzy felt incredibly believable and relatable, which made the story even more engaging, and i loved their romance from start to finish.
I really enjoyed this — it hooked me quickly and I ended up flying through it.
What I loved:
The chemistry between them is obvious from the start. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic works really well and the tension feels natural. I loved seeing the FMC’s development — she clearly has a background that shapes her and I appreciated that it wasn’t ignored. And the London setting? I genuinely loved that. It added so much charm for me.
What didn’t fully work for me: Some elements felt a bit repetitive, and I would have loved more depth from both characters — especially the MMC.
Would I recommend it? Yes — especially if you enjoy enemies-to-lovers with strong chemistry and a fast pace. It’s engaging and easy to get into.
Final thought: A fun, fast-paced romance that made me curious to read more from this author.

'There was silence. I whipped round. Olly was leaning on Esme's desk, his hands gripping it. He looked as though someone had walloped him in the face with a custard pie, minus the custard: blindsided and confused.' Work Love Balance, by @sophieloxtonauthor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ || 🌶
Welcome to my stop on the tour for Work Love Balance. I had so much fun reading this that I devoured it in less than 24 hours. It has absolutely everything you want from a smart, sexy romcom set in the corporate side of the celebrity world. Lizzie is the externally calm ice queen who internally is anything but, and her depth of character, self- doubt, and sense of obligation to her family made her the instantly likeable and relatable, flawed FMC that every decent romcom needs. Her chemistry with Olly was so delicious and their banter had me grinning broadly almost every time they were together. He's attractive and clever, she's attractive and clever- there's a little bit of rivalry- add a splash of whiskey one evening and you have the perfect storm. Now, every romcom also needs a gaggle of side characters and I loved absolutely every one in this: from Lizzie's infuriatingly self-absobed boss and her gym bro betrothed; to the best friend with everything together; to cutting Jacob in finance - they all came together to make the story this fabulously fun and funny romp and I absolutely loved it. I think we can all agree though that Pebble the cat is the real MVP here. It is a testament to an author's talent when they can inject as much personality into a feline as they can into their most complex character. Pebble must be protected at all costs!
Overall, if you like laugh out loud romcoms, witty banter, work place romance, found family, animal sidekicks with eons of personality, and complex FMCs with something to prove, you will LOVE Work Place Balance. I know I did.
Thank you @randomthingstours , @simonschusteruk, and @sophieloxtonauthor for the #gifted copy of the book.
Lizzy Brinks has it all under control. Everything is sorted. Or at least, that’s what she wants everyone to believe. She’s the typical smart, calm, slightly overconfident woman who will do absolutely anything to fix everyone else’s life - except her own, naturally. She looks after her dad and brother, lives with a rebellious cat called Pebble (and don’t you dare compliment Pebble - absolutely not), and dedicates most of her energy to helping her boss, Esme. Romance? Not on Lizzy’s schedule. That is, until Esme enters both a professional and romantic collaboration with Ajax, a high end influencer, which in turn introduces Lizzy to Ajax’s right-hand man, Olly. Of course, Olly is charming, infuriating, and far too attractive for his own good. So how is Lizzy supposed to work with him and keep things professional? The collaboration takes them to Venice on a business trip, where truths begin to unravel - professionally and romantically - for everyone involved. But Lizzy is a planner. And love doesn’t play by Lizzy’s rules.
This was a fun read, I have to admit. It flowed really easily and is definitely the kind of book you can sit down and get through quickly. At its core, this is a classic enemies-to-lovers workplace romance with a London and Venice backdrop. The characters worked well enough on paper, and there was just enough chemistry to make the slow burn believable. However, I do think it lacked a little depth, particularly when it came to character development.
Lizzy herself is probably the strongest part of the book. She’s incredibly relatable - a career-focused professional who seems composed and capable on the outside, but behind closed doors is exhausted, overwhelmed, back in her pyjamas with a cup of tea, carrying the weight of everyone else’s problems. You really feel that exhaustion. There were so many layers to her character that could have been explored further, and while what we got was enough to make her engaging, there was definitely room for more emotional depth.
I also found the pacing slightly uneven at times. Some sections felt a little too slow, and while the chemistry between Lizzy and Olly was there, it only just landed for me. I’m not entirely sure what was missing, but something stopped it from feeling fully convincing. That said, it still had many of the elements people love in a stereotypical romance: workplace tension, slow burn chemistry, forced proximity, and a dreamy travel setting. And despite my criticisms, I did enjoy it.
The premise was absolutely up my street, but the execution just didn’t fully deliver for me personally. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the book, it’s an easy, comforting romance with a simple plot, and you more or less know where it’s heading from the beginning. But that predictability doesn’t necessarily take away from the enjoyment.
For readers who enjoy slower, character-focused workplace romances, I’d definitely recommend it.
Thank you so much to Random Things Tours for gifting me an uncorrected proof (ecopy) at the time of reading, in exchange for an honest review.
Lizzy Brinks has everything sorted, well except her own life (including romance - who has time for that anyway?) When Lizzy’s boss Esme links with an influencer (Ajax Banks), he brings along his right hand man - Oliver. Oliver is charismatic, way too handsome and completely exasperating!
(Un)luckily for Lizzy, she now has to work with Oliver on a dating app. On the positive side, at least they get to go to Venice for a work trip - but whilst there, some secrets are revealed. Can Lizzy fix this disaster or will hearts be broken in the crossfire?..
The Pros: 1) Lizzy has a naughty little scamp of a cat called Pebble, and she is a character in her own right. I adored her! 😻 2) Lizzy is such a great character. She is all corporate on the outside, but soft in the middle. She also has a lot of weight on her shoulders. Plus, she is very relatable - she loves PJs, tea and her cat (can we be friends lol) 3) There is a romance you can root for. 4) Part of the story is set in Venice - so you get holiday vibes and the beautiful scenery. 5) I felt the book had a lot of depth to it, it had layers
The Cons: 1) There is mention of toxic relationships, in case that might affect you.
The Quotes:
1) I liked being a mystery in the office. Therefore, Esme had no idea I’d actually spent the weekend lying on my sofa, contributing to WhatsApp conversations with friends and watching a documentary about cheerleaders with my cat.
2) Like I said, a first kiss is about asking a question, and waiting for the answer. And if there’s anything I'm good at, it’s listening.
3) ‘Grazie, bello,’ I said. ‘Lizzy Brinks,’ he teased, ‘did you just speak Italian to me?’ ‘Si.’ ‘Please, please do not do that to anyone else. I’ll have to fight a hundred men to keep you. And I’m a lover, not a fighter.’ He dropped a light kiss on my lips, and I felt a tingle run straight down my spine.
The Summary: There was so much I loved about this book! Lizzy the main character is like a ‘fixer’ for her boss, so she’s super organised, cool, calm and collected but her personal life is a bit...messier. I found the story had many layers and depths to it. There are lots of fun elements in the plot too, like the work trip to Venice, her boss Esme keeping her on her toes and of course the possible romance with the lovely Oliver. A highlight of the book was Pebble - Lizzy’s cat (I know, surprise right?!), she is a cheeky little scamp and is a real character of her own. I loved this story so much I immediately downloaded the author’s other book, and that says a lot.
Summed up in a sentence?: Lizzy has to work with rival Oliver on a new Art dating app
Please note the copy of the book I received is an uncorrected proof and so therefore, it is possible there may be changes when the book is actually published.
A big thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange for an open and honest review!
I enjoyed reading this so much. It is well written with intricately drawn characters, some of whom were awful, but have just enough nice about them to have you lulled into a false sense of security. Lizzy is the Senior Director of an Arts based business, I’m not sure what the title really means, other than being on call at all times of the day and night, essentially giving up your life to their whims, managing their accidental or deliberate internet posts and keeping their business on track. Lizzy was very good at her job but when she arrived at work on that Monday morning she discovered that Esme, the artist, had decided over the weekend to fall in love and merge the businesses with her new love and create a internet dating app. She was stunned, she couldn’t understand how so much could have happened over a weekend and couldn’t see a way of easily integrating both businesses, navigating the differences between the two, before they could even consider working on the app. She seriously thought about resigning then but she was frightened, her commitments were huge, so she stayed. When Lizzy’s mother died, her father couldn’t cope with the realities of life, he hadn’t made any provision for the future and relied on her to pay the bills. In addition, her brother had a severe form of autism which required additional care which also cost a lot. So while Lizzy earned a lot, most of her pay was spent in supporting the people she loved hence she lived in a studio flat in a run down area of London, her future was bleak and she couldn’t see a way out. The new business initiative conceived by Esme and her finance, Ajax, brought Oliver MacLeod into her orbit, he was her opposite number in Ajax’s company and they would have to work together to ensure a successful integration of both companies. As could have been predicted, things did not always run smoothly but it was only when much of the company went to Venice for a conference and meetings that it got really interesting. This story kept me reading long into the night, it was an emotional rollercoaster but I enjoyed all of it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Work Love Balance had a lot of elements I usually enjoy—workplace romance, rivals-to-lovers tension and a slow-burn dynamic—but it didn’t fully land for me.
The story follows Lizzy Brinks, a career-driven professional trying to keep everything together while navigating family pressures and workplace challenges. When she’s forced to work with Oliver MacLeod, their clashing personalities set up a classic enemies-to-lovers arc.
I appreciated the real-life themes, especially around burnout and responsibility. Lizzy felt relatable at times, and the focus on balancing career and personal life added some depth beyond the romance.
That said, the pacing was uneven. The middle dragged quite a bit and the slow burn, while intentional, sometimes felt too slow—making it harder to stay fully invested in the relationship. The chemistry between Lizzy and Oliver had its moments, but didn’t always feel as strong or convincing as I’d hoped.
✨ What worked:
* Strong premise with workplace and tech elements * Relatable themes around burnout and pressure * Grumpy x sunshine / rivals-to-lovers setup
💭 What didn’t quite work:
* Pacing issues, especially in the middle * Romance lacked consistent tension/chemistry * Some predictable plot beats
Overall, this was an okay read with a solid concept, but it didn’t fully live up to its potential for me. It may still appeal to readers who enjoy slower, character-driven workplace romances.
The story was pure joy from start to finish. I breezed through the beautiful pages and couldn’t put it down. I didn’t want it to end!
It was everything I wanted and more. The warm, vibrant writing, the vivid characters I was rooting for, the adorable Pebbles who gives affection in her own cute way, and the witty plot all had me fully engaged and loving every minute. The London and Venice settings worked perfectly and the wonderful writing places the reader right there alongside our captivating characters.
We meet Lizzy whose organised work life is thrown into complete chaos. She has a lot on her plate financially and emotionally, and tries to keep people at a distance whilst projecting a confident outside hiding her inner struggles.
Enter the charming Olly. They are both thrown together on a work project that causes big changes for both of them. As their work lives become intertwined I loved the push and pull between them, their chemistry was tangible, there’s an undeniable spark, and their teasing and humorous interactions hook you in.
As feelings enter the mix, will they put their hearts on the line and take a risk? Can they lower their walls and trust each other? Have they found someone they can be their truest self with?
I loved it – it’s fun, fast-paced, full of layers, and about meaningful connections, knowing your worth, and stepping outside of your comfort zone.
It’s sunshine on the page and leaves you smiling; the perfect summer escape.
I’m eagerly awaiting Sophie Loxton’s next book.
With thanks to @randomthingstours and @simonschusteruk for my copy and place on the Tour.
Having absolutely loved ‘Wild About You’, I was really excited for this one.
The concept felt very much like ‘The Hating Game’ - a workplace enemies to lovers tale about two people forced together by their bosses for the greater good of their respective companies.
In reality the book wasn’t anything like an enemies to lovers trope at all. Olly and Lizzy butt heads as they try to navigate ridiculous work tasks which takes them from London to Venice.
The main standout element of the entire book is Lizzy’s character. She’s someone who puts her all into everything and everyone but herself. And her eventual burnout and breaking point is palpable and you can feel the tension which leads to that moment.
Olly’s sweet but ultimately I felt like we never truly learn much about him. On paper he seems like a good match for Lizzy but she’s got so many walls up with him the entire time that he never truly knows who she is or what she’s dealing with behind closed doors.
This was a sweet read and the short chapters made it easy to fly through, but I definitely wish we’d had a bit more vulnerability between the two main characters to see their relationship truly evolve.
Big thanks to NetGalley and the publishing team for sending over an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I knew when I laughed out loud at the first page of Work Love Balance that this was going to work for me. It's a very fun workplace romcom, but it has a really emotional core to it because of main character Lizzy. Lizzy has a lot on her plate. She's trying to control the chaos at work, meanwhile she has a severely autistic brother and a father that she's financially supporting, and her dad makes things more stressful for her, rather than less stressful. I really related to her, so I was sucked into this story straight away, and seeing her character arc was just so satisfying. Her banter with Olly was always good and had me laughing out loud often.
Work Love Balance reminded me of a few things, mainly The Devil Wears Prada and Sarah's storyline in the Love Actually film (the woman who was in love with Karl, but didn't give it a chance because of her familial responsibilities). Lizzy does get a HEA though, unlike poor Sarah in Love Actually!
I blitzed through Work Love Balance because I loved main character Lizzy, the book was both very funny and emotional, and the writing was fantastic. It was just so easy to read and I couldn't put it down!
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy from Simon & Schuster UK, but this is my voluntary and honest review.
Work Love Balance is a fun enemies to lovers workplace romance, an enjoyable and engaging read.
Lizzy Brinks handles the comms for artist Esme Kaminska - and does a great job. But away from professional success she is struggling with some family challenges - and her professional life becomes way more complicated when her boss has a whirlwind romance with influencer Alex. Swept up in the first flush of romance they also come up with a concept for a dating app - and Lizzy must work with her opposite number at Alex's company, Olly. Sparks begin to fly but they are very different - and workplace romances are never a good idea are they ....?!
With the story moving from London to Venice, where things become ever more complicated, it's a slow burn willl they won't they romance that will have you hoping for Lizzy and Olly's HEA. Lizzy was an interesting character as she juggled personal and professional lives, but her determination to bat off Olly did perhaps mean we learnt less about him. But there is much to make you smile and it's a fun read.
Firstly a thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book!
I’m a huge lover of workplace/forced proximity romance so I knew I was going to enjoy this book and I did! This book is a fun, chaotic, romantic read and if you are a fan of an office romance then this one is definitely one to pick up.
Lizzy really does try her best to keep everything together but I loved watching her have to deal with everything unraveling and her having to pick up the pieces and find herself! This book has Lizzy having to navigate family financial pressures and it was refreshing to see something like that in a book because it’s something a lot of people have to deal with but not a lot of people include it in books. Also absolutely adored Pebble the cat!!! The workplace element of this book was extremely chaotic (also toxic) and kinda funny at times.
This is a fun five-star read. This was fun if you didn’t take Lizzy too seriously, I did find her a little annoying at times, she took herself too seriously and I didn’t like how she spoke about where she lived, and that was a little annoying for me, but that may be a hang up of mine, and then when you get to really know her and understand why she pushes herself and why she feels the need to keep going, to be strong for her father and brother, you get her and it all makes sense. The will they wont they with Oliver was sweet, and the setting of Venice was delightful, there were a couple of moments with Esme that annoyed me so much, but then the end happened and I was happy again.
Sophie Loxton's first novel was a hard act to follow, but Work Love Balance certainly rose to the challenge! Sophie's writing is comforting and descriptive without being verbose, and captures her characters' emotions beautifully.
Our protagonist, Lizzy, is incredibly relatable; we know her to be incredibly competent but her self confidence is waning due to a parade of needy background characters. Enter our love interest, Olly, a strong (in all senses of the word) Scotsman with a penchant for puppies. What could go wrong?
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and Netgalley for this ARC, I read this cosy novel in one sitting!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars
Sophie Loxton has officially become a must-read author for me after now reading two of her books.
I found Lizzy’s situation really engaging and compelling, and the way the author handled her professional upheaval and family issues felt nuanced and believable. Her guarded nature felt completely earned, which made her character easy to connect with.
There was such great fizz and romantic energy between Lizzy and Olly. Their growing tension worked really well, and their chemistry felt genuine throughout.
💜 Blurb -Smart, calm and just a little terrifying, she’s the woman who fixes everything – except her own life. Between caring for her family, wrangling her escape-artist cat Pebble, and keeping her boss Esme Kaminska’s art empire afloat, Lizzy doesn’t have time for romance. When a work trip to Venice leads to some disastrous revelations, Lizzy must decide if she can stay cool when her heart’s on the line. 💙 Review - This was the first book that I have read by the author and I will definitely be reading more by them. The story was fun and easy to follow with good pacing and a great cast of characters. I loved the work place romance setting in the story and I wanted Lizzy and Oliver to have their happy ending. This was such a joy to read and I will definitely be reading more by the author. 💖 Thank you to Random Things Tours, the author Sophie Loxton and the publisher Simon and Schuster for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book so quickly! I had read Wild about you last year and it became one of my most favourite stories ever so couldn't wait to get stuck into Work Love Balance.
I loved Lizzie immediately she felt so real, coming across as completely in control and knowing what she is doing, when underneath she's questioning most of her decisions, and Olly is so fun, the banter between them in top notch. I will say I loved to dislike Esme and Ajax lol
I do have to say its the perfect summery escapist read!
Having now read two books by this author, she has become a must-read for me. I found Lizzy’s situation engaging and compelling. The author handles the character's professional upheaval and family issues with enough nuance to make her guarded nature feel entirely earned. There was really good fizziness and romantic energy between Lizzy and Olly. Their growing tension worked well, and it felt like they had genuine chemistry. Worth a read. 3.75⭐️ rounded up
If you are a fan of enemies to lovers romance book then you will really enjoy this. I liked the book as it was easy to read, and even though you know how it’s going to end, it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. This is a decent read that is easy to dip in and out of, or binge as you sit by the pool. It’s easy going and doesn’t require you to pay too much attention.
This is Sophie Loxtons second book. Warm, funny with a bit of spice. I loved it and who didn't love Pebble especially! It also touched on being a carer and family responsibility which was done sensitively.
Esme meets Oliver when their bosses get engaged and are starting a new work project together. Forced to spend time together and sort out the mess, will it lead to more? A great read.
This is actually my first book by Sophie Loxton but I think I’m going to need to read others now - I really, really enjoyed it!!
Lizzy Brinks is a confident, high flying woman, greatly respected at work. However, away from work, her life isn’t as calm as her colleagues believe it is. She looks after her dad and brother, as well as her cat Pebbles, and she lives in a small flat, away from the glamour of her job.
At work, she spends all her time dealing with her boss, Esme, who is an artist, and all the ensuing issues. Lizzy's life gets even more diffocult when one day, Esme comes in and announces that she’s getting married to Ajax and they want to merge their businesses, as well as start a new one - a dating app based on people’s art preferences!!
Lizzy finds herself having to work with Olly, her opposite number on Ajax’s side, who she thinks she won't like, but then becomes intrigued with. They find themselves getting closer, but Lizzy isn’t interested in romance. She doesn’t want to let anyone in, or find out about her private life.
But on a work trip to Venice, things begin to unravel - can Lizzy and Olly really make it work? Or does Lizzy need to realise what her priorities are before embarking on romance?
This was such a fun book - the perfect romcom. Lots of romance and humour, and also fast paced and very easy to read, which I love! The characters were good, especially Lizzy who i think was pretty relatable! The pressure she had at work, and also the pressure at home, and yet despite everything, Lizzy was kind and loveable and I just wanted her to realise how great she was!!
Her friends were also fun and added a lot to the book i think!! Everyone needs friends like those. 💕
I really enjoyed this!! 😀
I was lucky enough to be part of the book tour for Work Love Balance by Sophie Loxton. Thank you so much Sophie Loxton, Simon & Schuster UK and Random Things Tours for having me!!
This was a fun work place romance. I really enjoyed both our MC's aswell as the sideline characters. Seeing Lizzy (fmc) home troubles, and Olly (mmc) opening up was really hard hitting. I also really love the friendship groups in this
Personally, I couldn't see the romance connection between Olly and Lizzy unfortunately. Their characters are great, just the romance wasn't for me I'd still recommend, as this was a great read otherwise!
Lizzy Brinks is juggling a high-powered job herding unpredictable artist Esme Kaminska through PR minefields whilst also providing for her almost non-verbal autistic brother and financially naïve father. She lives in a dingy flat in a poor part of town, buys all her designer clothes on Vinted and generally is giving off an Ice Queen vibe with her all-black wardrobe and strong red lipstick.
Then disaster strikes, Esme makes a firm-wide internal announcement, after spending the weekend with fitness influencer Ajax Banks they are engaged and intend to merge their businesses whilst simultaneously launching a new dating app based on (wait for it) people's art preferences. Esme won't listen to reason, she and Ajax are all over each other and Lizzy has to deal with her equivalent from Ajax's side, Scottish, ex-military Oliver MacLeod who is all smart suits and charm.
Now Lizzy has her hands full trying to market an app that hasn't even been designed, keep her boss from derailing all they've worked for, and resisting the charms of lovely Oliver.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Fun, silly, serious, with real-life problems and a HEA - what's not to love?
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.
