Admiral William H. McRaven (U.S. Navy Retired) served with great distinction in the Navy. In his thirty-seven years as a Navy SEAL, he commanded at every level. As a Four-Star Admiral, his final assignment was as Commander of all U.S. Special Operations Forces. He is now Chancellor of the University of Texas System.

Written by a much respected retired U.S. Admiral, this is a collection of encouraging speeches and personal reflections from someone who loves his country and has served her well. It fills a heart yearning to capture a love and respect for a country which traditionally protects the world when it is yet strong enough to rule it. Admiral McRaven's speeches and poetry are inspirational and well worth the read.

We have all had the one teacher whose classroom we entered kicking and screaming who saw us for what we could be and had the patience to inspire us to have that same vision. Or perhaps it was a parent or a relative that always found the correct word, saying , phrase or story that just hit us the right way to raise us up when we needed the push. Admiral William H. McRaven is a son of this great American republic who is just that wise, caring, intelligent, devoted, inspiring leader who our forefathers prayed would be their voice for future generations. This book is inspirational beyond my words. His speeches, stories and poems will light the hearts of every American who takes the time to read them. This is just the book we need on this momentous birthday of our very young American experiment. 5 stars just does not seem enough for Admiral McRaven!

Totally worth the read. Admiral William H. McRaven has written in such a manner as to inspire, instill hope, and set a very high example. I'm not particularly interested in poetry but found the poems enlightening. My favorite one was I Remember. I reread it many times. The only negative thing I will point to is the incorrect and constant use of the word democracy as our form of government. We are a republic.
Finally, in the last paragraph in the book the republic was used instead of democracy.
Benjamin Franklin was asked what form of government the Constitutional Convention had created:
A republic, if you can keep it.

This is for the classic, Walter Cronkite, Apple-Pie-loving, All-American! This book reminded me of the times I was on various military bases with my father, where duty to country overpowered any party. Admiral McRaven is an outstanding poet! With each brief essay on the American experience of what it means to carry the embodiment of a people who are not just slightly diverse but greatly diverse - religiously, politically, culturally, and more. Excellent salute to the forefront of America!

This book was in line with the other books Admiral McRaven wrote. His books never get old and they are inspiring to all of us regardless of our background and profession. It’s hard not to come out feeling enlightened and energized reading one of his books! Duty, Honor, Country and Life was no exception and didn’t disappoint either!!! The poems were an added bonus to hammer home his section themes.

It’s okay. Not a lot of original material. It’s less a “book” than it is “collected writings and speeches,” so most of the content can be found elsewhere online. But it isn’t bad, at least if you enjoy typical McRaven fare (which I do). But he really is pumping out these little books like there’s no tomorrow. That well has to run dry at some point.

Have loved McRaven for many years. This is a compilation of previous speeches with current reflections, and unpublished poems which was a surprise. It’s an easy read, per his usual style, and very timely. I could definitely stand to borrow some of his unending optimism (and know I will lean on it in the years to come).

I have great respect for McRaven, but this book’s reiteration of speeches gets repetitive and ultimately falls short of his other work. Maybe a good gift for a certain context, less of a good read, but there are worthwhile parts, particularly if you desire to improve your speechwriting.
