Kisha knew the harsh realities of the hood all too well. Raised by a prostitute and a dope fiend, survival meant doing whatever it took. Meek, her constant in a world full of chaos, understood the struggle. His own mother prioritized men over him, pushing him to grow up fast and get it how he could. Together, Kisha and Meek fought hunger, bed bugs, and everything else life threw at them. Even when they were forced to separate, their love never died.
When Kisha’s life starts to come together, tragedy strikes again. Meek takes a bullet for her, and Kisha would do anything to repay him, as long as he still loved her. But her insecurities push him away, testing their loyalty and trust. As the past resurfaces, both are forced to confront their demons. Will love conquer all, or is it time to let go? Find out in this heart-touching standalone where loyalty, love, and survival are all put to the test.
This book turned me every which way but loose… everytime I thought there was going to be a glimpse of happiness S Yvonne said sikeeeeee! What a good tale… from parental trauma to group homes… to doing whatever you need to do to have your basic necessities goodness gracious 😩
"Meek: Chasing That Gangsta Love" marks my introduction to S. Yvonne's work, and I can confidently say it won't be my last. This bittersweet love story follows Meek and Kisha, two young people attempting to navigate life while carrying the scars of childhood abandonment, poverty, and addiction. For readers with specific triggers, I strongly recommend reviewing the content warnings before diving in.
S. Yvonne delivers exceptional character development that allows readers to understand each protagonist's motivations on a deeper level. Her accessible writing style creates an immediate emotional connection with both Meek and Kisha, drawing readers into their world with remarkable intimacy. The central plot, following the reunion of these childhood sweethearts as they struggle to maintain their relationship, is genuinely compelling.
As an older reader, I admittedly found myself frustrated by some of the characters' decisions. However, this speaks more to the author's authentic portrayal of youth than any failing in the narrative. These characters make choices that feel true to their age and circumstances, reminding me of my own questionable decisions at that stage of life.
While the main storyline shines, a subplot involving a third perspective feels underdeveloped and ultimately detracts from the story's focus. This additional viewpoint appears to have been introduced to satisfy readers curious about a particular side character, but it's subsequently abandoned without resolution. This represents a missed opportunity. The author could have either fully developed this thread to add narrative depth or maintained the story's authentic simplicity by omitting it entirely.
Despite this structural misstep, "Meek: Chasing That Gangsta Love" is both beautiful and meaningful. S. Yvonne's intentionality shines through every page, creating a work that resonates long after the final chapter. Her ability to tackle difficult themes while maintaining accessibility marks her as an author worth following.
This is solid, heartfelt storytelling that announces the arrival of a promising voice in contemporary fiction.
Imagine living in poverty where no one cares about you but one person. Kisha and Meek were dealt an unfortunate hand, but made a way by fighting through it. Maya is who you call the right girls girls I mean ride or die. This shows you struggle, love, awareness, and realizing love could be stronger than everything you’ve been through in life. Good read!
I believe living in the “hood” a lot of females go through what Kisha had to endure. I’m happy from a young age she had someone who genuinely loved her for who she was and could always see the light in her. I’m happy she was able to get the love she desperately needed and deserved. Great book
He was suppose to be her safe place. Their story and how the met was so real you’d think that with that and knowing how she’s been abused in every relationship in her life. And every partner she’s been involved with cheated on her and abused her he wouldn’t do the same… cheating trope wasn’t needed in this book. If you needed a climax in the book it should have been maybe been with her and the pregnancy and how they were learning to handle a new evolution in their relationship. This honestly made me quite upset because 5 hours and 500 pages and this is the ending you get. Now I have to go to sleep on a bad note. Don’t ever show up on my fyp again as a matter of fact youre blocked.
I’m not even gone hold you. This book pissed me off.
First of all this author most definitely came off as colorist.
“My father was a mixture of Haitian and white. That’s where I got my skin, hair, and eyes his good genes, damn sure not my mama’s.”
This is a copy and paste from the book. These type remarks didn’t stop there but that’s just one that really made me side eye the author. We were reminded at EVERY turn in this book how Kisha had pretty light skin and pretty hair and eyes and how everyone was always so jealous of her because of her skin hair and eyes. Meanwhile the first time the brown skin character “Ressie” is introduced we are immediately told that she isn’t pretty and she is average looking. And every time she is mentioned after we are also reminded that she isn’t pretty and average looking.
When we read these type of romances we are well aware that the FMC and MMC are going to end up together at some point. However, in this book the author decided to give the MMC another love interest during their time of no contact and being away from each other. The other love interest Reesie and Meek were definitely ride or die LITERALLY. They were broke together and came up together, they built a whole life together. I quite literally began to love the relationship Meek and Ressie had and how they loved each other. So the fact that the author went the route she did just to get meek and Kisha together was foul. I would’ve rather her just kill Ressie off because that shit made me start to dislike Meek🙃🙃🙃🙃. And I hated that because meek was a good guy a really good guy.
Kisha went through ALOTTTT in this book and at every turn I felt sorry for the girl. Life just kept dealing her a bad hand and I absolutely hated that for her. I’m happy she eventually went to counseling because she needed that shit much sooner than she actually went. I’m happy she eventually got her happy ending I just hate that we had to sacrifice Ressie in the process.

I loved Kisha and Meek! They both came from broken homes and faced poverty, but never gave up determination or on one another. Kisha seemed to get it the worst she could never truly catch a break and I hated that for her! Through time her and meek lose contact and Kisha has to fend for herself and it gets hard for my girl. Finally Meek and Kisha are reunited but its not the reunion either of them expected, life has moved along and now they both come with even more baggage. Meek doesn't care though he's been waiting on Kisha and will not let up this time. Seeing their love and bond on the pages grow and develop was chef's kiss. Of course theirs haters somewhere never wanting to see you happy, but meek and Kisha push through to get their happy ending. I shed plenty tears in this book and it was so worth it!
From the first chapter, Meek had me hooked. He’s quiet, dangerous, and fine, but every move he makes says more than words ever could. Fresh out and trying to stay out of trouble, but the way he loves Kisha ? Whew. Protective, intentional, and the kind of love that sticks to your soul.
Kisha is real and relatable. She’s been through pain, but she’s not weak. She’s healing, holding her own, and learning to trust again — and watching her and Meek build something was raw and beautiful.
This isn’t a fluffy romance. It’s real, it’s heavy, and it’s worth every page. The tension, the chemistry, the loyalty — I felt it all. S. Yvonne gave us hood love with depth, and I couldn’t put it down.
If you love urban romance with heart, heat, and characters that stay with you, you need to read Meek.
Kisha and Meek went through hell and back. The girls in the neighborhood was jealous of her. Same as Brittany. Meek didn't stop thinking about Kisha ever. Even when he was with Reesie. He got rid of everybody who was a threat to her. Kisha decided that she wasn't going to like her mama, she wanted more for herself. Victoria apologized to Kisha, because Meek wouldn't allow to be around his family. Meek turned his life around he wasn't going to be dead or in jail. Kisha and Mya both decided needed therapy. Kisha had to therapy so find herself again and be all right again. I got to give to Mya for the beat down she put Brittany. Meek learned his lesson. They are a family. They belong together.
Listen, this book is a rollercoaster ride. There are so many ups and downs, changes and turnarounds. For a minute there, I didn't think Meek and Kisha would get a happy ending. They endured so much in their lives. Hungry, abandonment, not being loved properly, whew the list could go on and on.
Finding their way back to each other was a long road. They kept taking hits no matter how hard they tried to get it out of the mud. Then Brittany....yep the stepsister.
Anyway, all is well. Meek, Kisha, and Marquis Jr. finally found their family. Awesome story.
Absolutely loved Meek & Kisha! Their love started out as genuine friends just trying to help each other out. Both coming from not so loving mothers. They needed each other. Fast forward through late teen years/early adulthood showed them that love was beyond friendship. Meek was willing to do ANYTHING to let Kisha know how he always felt. Kisha just wanted to accept it after all the hurt she went through. After all they’ve been through together & on their own, they deserve a happily ever after!
I read the trigger warnings and have read a lot of books with some serious triggers. However, they are usually spread throughout the book. I had to stop at chapter 6. The amount that this girl has been through already is enough to make me want to end it. I do know that this is reality for a lot of people, but it was too much for me. I have read from this author before and will def do so again, but this one was very, very heavy. There are few grammatical and context errors as well.
This book right here was beautifully done. It had me on an emotional roller coaster. All the twists and turns. A father’s sacrifice to save his child. Childhood love that stood the test of time and trials and tribulations all to end the way it did. When Mya read Victoria’s note, I was in crying hard. That part brought out so many emotions out of me it was beautiful. I won’t say the rest because you gotta read the story. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. This is definitely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ hands down. In my option.
Kish had it rough man. I was so happy she went to therapy because that girl had been through hell and back. I was happy that she had someone like Meek, a bright spot in all the darkness. I don’t know why I expected them to be much older but for them to be so young, the growth Kish went through was amazing. I loved that Meek wanted to be better for her. They had a cute story. Wish I could read more about how things went after the baby.
They had a hard life but through it all they remained true to each other. Kish truly had a story to tell. She went through so much at a young age but it only made her stronger. Meek was real one. I love his loyalty. Glad to see that true love wins in the end. This was definitely a great read. I wouldn’t expect anything different from S. Yvonnne. Now you have to bring us the rest of Meek and Kish story😝😍
When I say I criedddddd so bad during this whole book whew Chile Kisha my girl been through hell and back! Life really did a number on my girl I'm glad it turned around! I wish we could all choose our families but unfortunately we can't I relate more than a little bit.
The life that Meek and Kisha had was rough, but through it all, they managed to find love in each other. I love how they were able to heal in order to be there for each other. Kisha was a strong young lady. It takes a lot for a man to realize that you should never step out of what you have at home.
i haven't read a book that's had me on a roller coaster ride in a long time.... i was all over the place emotionally but in a good way because i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it was an amazing love story... after so many bad situations there was finally something that came out of all the trauma... great read !
Meek and Kisha's story was so heartbreaking yet beautiful. Seeing what they went through broke my heart and I was so upset with Meek for what he did with her stepsister but in the end I'm glad they found their way back to one another and his relationship with his mom improved.
Two people who became best friends through childhood neglect and hardships reconnect as adults. They still have a lot of growing to do but they do it together. Meek and Keisha went through so much at a young age, but while one was able to make a way to better the other continued to go through so much. This book was really good. Definitely would recommend
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75|🌶️🌶️🌶️.75 This was that trauma hood love. I enjoyed this book. There is a lot of hardship that the characters experience so please watch for triggers. This is a second chance romance too and there was some good groveling towards the end.
I would t mind a second part epilogue because I enjoyed these characters a lot. I would recommend! 💖
Whew this book took me through it. All the trauma they went through and it was like they couldn’t catch a break. This story really shows you a journey of true love and that it can withstand the test of time. I love how Kisha chose to get counseling and help herself be better.
Not me thinking it was going to be from teenage love to adult love. I think they were in their teens the entire time except Meek. Very young adults. I think I missed him going into business. This read is about teens finding love not teen love to adult love.
I am so glad Kisha went to counseling, I’m so glad she put herself first to work on healing so you could be the best mom and wife for her man. Meek learned a valuable lesson in his moment of straight stupidity. You can’t run from it you have to face.
The emotions in this book! It started off rough but you gotta ride the wave! Such a good read full of emotions, drama, sadness but it wraps up so well & so good!
Wow…this went fast but it touched on A LOT of hot topics. Traumatic experiences that people have to deal with. I’m glad that the author tied up loose ends and didn’t have a lot of back and forth drama.
I absolutely love that Kish stood on business when it came to her feelings. She loved Meek, but loved herself enough to let go and heal so she could be a better woman overall.
I remember reading this book so many years ago, but still it felt like the first time. Meek and Kisha’s love story is the definition of pure love no matter what obstacles they encounter in the end it was always them !!!
