A future Scotland - independent, but not free. Economic support came from China, but with that came erosion of freedoms, and the disappearance of people who objected to what was going on.
So a resistance network was formed, with some very smart people working to tell the world what was really happening, and they had a plan to expose the corruption and lies. Unfortunately the anti-terrorist force - PSAT - also had some very smart people, one of whom was very good at second-guessing what the network might do.
Harry Campbell was a retired, divorced headteacher, quietly working part time with the Scottish educational establishment. His only ambition was to escape from Scotland, to Canada, to join his daughter and enjoy his sunset years. But the network needed someone like him, and he agreed to help them - after all, what was the worst that could happen?
This was a fascinating read, set in the near future (2040) where an Independent Scotland has China ‘supporting’ it. Where people are monitored are you really free? A read that got me thinking about all the choices and rights we have and ‘what if…’ that can affect our lives. A quick read mystery thriller with various POV throughout, which built up tension right until the end. It was an interesting concept especially with a resistance network story too. It didn’t have the heavy dystopian feel that it could have, it was a political thriller with a difference, I really enjoyed it.
As soon as I saw the chance to read a near future thriller about an independent Scotland I jumped at the chance to get onboard.
Set in 2040, Scotland has become an independent country, but has done so with the help of China. Scotland's crime rates are down but the country has become more isolated, people are watched, conversations are all recorded and so is their every move. Was this the future we all wanted??
The story is told from multiple POV's, but our main character is Harry Campbell, a retired teacher who plans to leave the country and live with his daughter in Canada. A resistence network is lurking in the shadows who want to expose what is really going on in Scotland and they need someone with Harry's skills and knowledge to help them. Is Harry about to make a mistake that could cost him his life?
This book was so much more than I expected it to be, at about the 80% mark it ramped up into a murder mystery and I was hooked until the final page. It was so nice to read a book set around my home, with so many nods to local spots and places i knew further afield.
This book really gets you thinking, 'what if?' ... 2040 isn't that far away and is this a reality that we could even see?
