About the author

Ian Goldin is a professor at the University of Oxford in England. He took up his most recent position as director of Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford, in September 2006. He is the Oxford University Professor of Globalisation and Development, and holds a professorial fellowship at Balliol College, Oxford.

As advertised, this is a short introduction to the concept of development. There is a lot of history and definition, as you’d expect. Focuses include accelerating development, aid, sustainability, and global development. I most appreciated the section on futures of development, which include UN Millennium Development Goals and discussion.

Good introduction, quite informative. Should talk more about post-development arguments imo. Kinda needs an update too (the current edition is from 2018, would be nice to read about development in the context of Corona).

Üşenmedim saydım neredeyse her sayfaya en az 2 tane ekonomik referans geliyor. Her ne kadar Ian Goldin başta ben ekonomistim diye uyarısını yapsa da bir introduction kitabı için fazlasıyla boğucu.

เป็นงานคลาสสิกมากๆ เรียกว่าเก็บครบทุกประเด็นของวงการการพัฒนาศึกษา (development studies) อาจจะน่าเบื่อนิดๆ เพราะท่าทีมันค่อนข้างวิชาการ แต่อ่านไม่ยาก ภาษาไม่ได้ซับซ้อน ข้อมูลตัวเลขเยอะ และดีเบทหลายอย่างสำคัญมากๆ ต่อโลกปัจจุบัน เพราะแนวคิดเรื่องการพัฒนาโดยรากฐานแล้วสัมพันธ์กับหลายเรื่องมากๆ เช่น จริงๆ การพัฒนาประเทศหนึ่งๆ มันเรื่องการเมืองระหว่างประเทศมาโดยตลอด และการให้ความช่วยเหลือจากต่างประเทศนี่เองกำหนดหน้าตาการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจการเมืองของประเทศอื่นซึ่งส่งผลกระทบอย่างลึกซึ้งต่อคุณภาพชีวิต อำนาจทางการเมือง ตลอดจนรูปแบบการปกครองของประเทศนั้นไปได้เป็นศตวรรษๆ (เช่น ไทยหรือประเทศในแอฟริกาและลาตินอเมริกา) ขณะเดียวกัน การพัฒนาประเทศก็เป็นเรื่องอำนาจทางการเมืองด้วย เพราะประเทศ 'พัฒนาแล้ว' จำนวนมากตักตวงทรัพยากรจากประเทศอื่นๆ ไปอย่างมหาศาลในช่วงอาณานิคมเรื่อยมา จนสามารถพัฒนาประเทศได้อย่างก้าวกระโดด แต่ก็ทำลายโลกและชีวิตผู้คนไปจำนวนมาก คำถามคือประเทศพวกนี้ควรมีภารกิจอะไรไหมเพื่อรับผิดชอบกับผลของการพัฒนาของประเทศตัวเอง ต้องทำอะไรไหมกับประเทศที่ตัวเองเข้าไปตักตวงทรัพยากรและทำลายรากฐานทางสังคมจนทำให้ประเทศนั้นๆ กลายเป็นประเทศพัฒนาน้อยที่สุดทั้งในทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจในปัจจุบัน ต้องทำอะไรไหมกับแนวคิดเรื่องการใช้พลังงานทดแทน ในเมื่อประเทศตัวเองใช้พลังงานฟอซซิลเพื่อพัฒนาประเทศจนสำเร็จและก้าวไปสู่การใช้พลังงานทดแทนได้ ในขณะที่ประเทศที่ถูกตักตวงทรัพยากร หากถูกบังคับให้ลดการใช้พลังงานที่ใช้แล้วหมดไปในตอนนี้ ก็อาจทำให้ช่องว่างในการพัฒนาให้ทัดเทียมกับประเทศพัฒนาแล้วถ่างกว้างขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จนไม่มีทางตามทัน

This book about development has some great ideas about how things grow and change, and it also made me think about how teams work together and keep things safe — https://elitex.systems/blog/devops-vs... is a simple page that explains the difference between normal DevOps and adding security into the mix, which ties in nicely with thinking about how projects and work get done well.

Oxford UP's VSI books are fantastic. Dense and short overviews of important stuff. In this book, obviously, it's all about development: the supposed effort of wealthy countries trying to help poorer countries.

I've only read the sample of it, but I felt the author's enthusiasm to work for people in developing countries. I'm grateful to know there are people working for those people in poverty, very systematically with sincere hearts, while I can't do much for them.

A solid short summary of development. A little outdated now though given the changes in development over the last decade.
