To accompany his earlier biography of John Hume, Stephen Walker has now written a not entirely sympathetic biography of his fellow Nobel laureate David Trimble. He recognises that Trimble could be blunt and poor company. But, he and Hume managed to achieve what had for decades seemed to be the impossible dream - 1998's Good Friday Agreement. Much of the second half of the book is taken up with the agreement and its aftermath in trying to get the NI Executive working on a continuous basis.

Walker writes clearly and well. He has interviewed the remaining family and many of Trimble's contemporaries to produce a well-rounded picture of a difficult man

An excellent read, very informative and enlightening about a politician who made political history whilst overseeing the decline of his party. An unlikely politician who changed 90 years of majority rule. Stephen Walker researched his topic with all the major players of the time.
