I was born of spring, but I am destined for darkness.
My mother, a goddess of balance against the Morai, is dead, and my world shattered with her. Now, the ancient, sadistic Morai have swooped in, sealing my a political marriage to the Fae Thrundul Gods, and I’m prize to be controlled. Only the strange and calculating Dhallios, the God of Tricks, is permitted to court me. But with every silver-tongued whisper, I grow less certain if he is a savior or jailer.
I was sent to the Pantheon to be secured, yet the Lord God himself delivered me straight into the path of eternal night.
He is The Butcher in Black, the enigmatic Lord Death himself. Gaelyn—possessive, powerful, and utterly forbidden. My heart, and my own dark needs, belong only to him and his realms. The Thrundul warned his shadows would break me; they were wrong. They woke me up and showed me Gaelyn. Our immediate, undeniable bond burns with every stolen moment we share.
To survive the gods’ game, our secret affair must remain hidden. Discovery means not just death, but being ripped from each other, our fates rewritten apart. Together, we are an undeniable, forbidden force. With every stolen moment together, we risk igniting a war against the gods themselves. But sometimes war comes to those who fight to control their own choices.
We have to Surrender to destiny, or burn it down and remake our own.
When this tale began I was captivated with the origin story and the creation of the various species. The world is so vast and there are so many characters I would love to learn more about. I loved watching Andraste's character development and the way her magic changed. Selune is another intriguing character and I would love an origin story for her and many of the other characters. Dhalios should rue the day he set his sights on her, and hopefully get his comeuppance. I can not wait to continue reading this series and I am excited to see where the story will go in the Shadow and Brimstone series. Looking forward to reading more about Lord and Lady Death.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC reader. I give my opinion freely.
From the very first line, I was completely captivated. Andraste’s journey, from a sheltered daughter of a goddess to a woman who dares to defy destiny, feels both fierce and heartbreakingly human. Her connection with Lord Death, the “Butcher in Black,” crackles with danger and passion, the kind of love that feels fated and forbidden all at once.
The world is vivid, the writing lush, and every page thrums with tension and beauty. It’s a story of power, freedom, and a love that dares to challenge the gods themselves. Fans of Hades and Persephone or From Blood and Ash will fall in love with this darkly beautiful tale.
The world buildup is beautiful and a unique take on a popular book trope.I have never read a book with such a unique storyline. And it had taken me a while to get through just because of such the slow world, building up, but the execution was worth staying for.
andrastes journey through the book was on spiraling. She was shielded by a protective mother, and our bond with the main male character is both taboo, but also feels right where you can't help root for them
There is nothing i like more than greek stories. And especially hades and persephone vibes which this book definitely had.But a whole new take on it
When she takes control of her fate and finds herself drawn to the mysterious God of Death things heat up and the stakes are raised. But how do you turn your back on the first person who has made you feel truly seen, for your light AND your dark! A story that captures your attention from the very beginning with characters you will love and characters you will love to hate!
