Mortal Remains in the first (#1) book in the SKELETON ISLAND series
Willow has returned to Skeleton Island after inheriting a house, following the death of her Grandmother. She hasn’t been back in four years but has many fond memories of the island, including those of Tripp, a childhood friend of Willow and her brother Peyton, and erstwhile crush of hers. Following her brothers death two years earlier and the end of a failed relationship Willow has decided on a new start, a new career, in the place that meant so much to her growing up.
Tripp returned to Skeleton Island after his military service, suffering from PTSD following the death of Willow’s brother Peyton (that Tripp feels responsible for). After going through therapy to help him overcome his anxiety and guilty, Tripp started his own thriving Finish Furniture business, he keeps himself pretty isolated preferring to keep both his physical and emotional scars to himself . Tripp hasn’t seen Willow in four years so discovering she has returned to the Island awakens many memories for him, including the deep feelings he’s always held for his late best friends sister…..

It’s always exciting when an author releases the first book in a new series but when it’s one of your favourite authors? The icing on the cake!!
In ‘Mortal Remains’ we are introduced to Skeleton Island and its delicious, if at times quirky inhabitants. Throughout the book we meet several characters that I have a sneaky feeling will be starring in their own books in the not too distant future. Squeeeee!! I have to say the new Sheriff Rafe absolutely intrigues me! I can’t wait to learn more about his backstory. Xanthe looks like she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with, I think Blaine is going to receive plenty of issues with his new project, and Willows neighbour Mae is a ball of mischief!
Rufus is a delightful inclusion in the story and there are a couple of areas where Rufus ‘voices’ the narrative, unusual but a wonderful addition. The book is written from the third person perspective of Willow and Tripp (Rufus’ bits aside) in alternate chapters, I haven’t read many third person books lately so it was a refreshing change.
Skeleton Island is an interesting, fascinating place to set this series, Kaylea’s descriptions had me googling the Strait Of Juan De Fuca and Salish Sea to find out more. It is quite clear that Kaylea researched hard to make her descriptions realistic and that, along with her personal experiences, combine to make Skeleton Island an intriguing, alluring place. Mouthwatering in fact...
Willow and Tripp are a great match and there is undeniably chemistry between them. Tripp is desperate to rekindle their relationship from the start but can’t get past his guilt to give them a chance and Willow is treading carefully, knowing that Tripp still has issues from his last military mission alongside a belief that she should take time after the breakup of her previous relationship. There are a couple of open door spucy scenes but they are tastefully written and not superfluous to the story.
I read an ebook of this book, with a print length of around 340 pages, an absolutely stunning cover and superb editing, I cannot recommend this book enough!! The cover by ‘Sweet ‘N Spicy Designs is an absolute, mouthwatering triumph! I love it! The book was edited by Kaylea’s friend and fellow author author Pamela White and I have to say that I found not a single error whilst reading, a rarity I must say, and it serves to make the reading experience all the more enjoyable.
There are several things in this book that if you follow Kaylea on socials, you will know echo her personal life. I am sure that Rufus is based on a certain, gorgeous pup that Kaylea adopted IRL. Bronwyn’s expertise and thorough explanations in human bioarcheology and her studies in Durham are all based on Kaylea’s own experiences and I know that Kaylea has an interest in whales and dabbles in her own artistic endeavours. Utilising her own knowledge and experiences in this story only serves to improve the story, knowing that the author has real life understanding of the things she is talking about.
With grateful thanks to Kaylea Cross for an early copy of this book. All comments are my own honest, unbiased opinion.
Note: There are a couple of threads that aren’t concluded by the end of the book. I am sure they will continue to be dealt with in future books and I am here for that!!
I recommend you dive into this book!!
💀 Small Town Romance 💀 Former Military Hero 💀 Brothers Best Friend 💀 Open Door (Tasteful) 💀 Rescue Dog 💀 Romantic Suspense 💀 New Series
MORTAL REMAINS is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult SKELETON ISLAND erotic, romantic suspense series. This is former military contractor and woodworker Tripp Rawlings, and library archivist Willow Carlson’s story line.
Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Willow and Tripp MORTAL REMAINS follows the return of Willow Carlson to Skeleton Island. Willow’s late grandmother left the home to our story line heroine, but Willow’s arrival sets into motion a series of events that will reveal a dark secret buried in and around Skeleton Island. Willow struggles with the memories of what was and what will never be including coming face to face with the man who broke her heart. Tripp Rawlings keeps to himself since the disastrous fall-out of his last tour in the middle East, a tour that scarred him both inside and out but when Skeleton Island begins to reveal its secrets, Tripp and Willow find themselves a target of an unknown source.
The world building focuses on several interesting pathways including the unearthing of Skeleton Island’s secrets, and an organization that is working behind the scenes to take control.
The relationship between Willow and Tripp is one of second chances, of a sort. Tripp has been in love with Willow for as long as he can remember but Tripp has a secret that once revealed may end any chance of a happily after for our story line couple. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the to, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters are energetic and charismatic. We are introduced to Sheriff Rafe Torres, Willow’s friend Bronwyn; neighbor Mae, and several questionable locals who may or may not be hiding dangerous secrets.
MORTAL REMAINS is a story of secrets and lies, grief and guilt, power and control, family and relationships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is dramatic and edgy; the romance is seductive and fated; the characters are determined and dynamic.
Mortal Remains is the first book in Kaylea Cross's brand new Skeleton Island Series and it's off to an intriguing, spicy and mysterious start. Written in third person (the only way I read!), I found myself more and more invested in the story. You can see the blurb for a description, and it gets even better as you read more into the story of Willow and Tripp. Skeleton Island is a fairly close community with some very interesting characters. Some I loved, some not so much. It is also a place that has secrets that some don't want to come out and will do anything to stop that. When Willow accidentally stumbles onto one of them, she finds herself a target of who they don't know, but they will stop at nothing to silence her and keep their secrets. Tripp and Willow have known each other forever, he was her brother's best friend. Tripp in particular has change a lot since Willow last saw him, but there is definitely heat between them. While Tripp struggles with PTSD, he also struggles to maintain a distance from Willow. But with Willow in danger, Tripp can no longer stand back and at the same time must decide if he can reveal his deepest secret with Willow. Dangerous, intriguing, sexy and full of secondary character I want to more about fill Mortal Remains and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic suspense to fall into. Not only are all the humans compelling (I now love Earl), so if Rufus, Willow's rescue dog! I absolutely loved that Rufus's thoughts are part of the story. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
Advance copy given in exchange for an honest review. And this is an honest review. Kaylea's books just keep getting better and better. The amount of work and research she puts into them makes them so real!
Small town romance with plenty of action and suspense and, of course Rufus, the bestest boy ever!
Willow finally summed up the courage to return to Skeleton Island. Having inherited her gran's house, got out of a bad relationship and needing a bit of space from her grieving parents, she thinks Skelly is exactly the new start she needs.
Meeting Tripp opens lots of gates to memories she'd rather forget. Memories of her brother before he died, her infatuation with Tripp. Adopting Rufus was another way to deal with her own grief and the two quickly become fast friends. But there is something malevolent making way its through the island and Willow and Rufus end up right in the middle of it.
Willow and Tripp, bound together in the grief of losing Peyton, and Tripp with the added layer of Survivor's Guilt and PTSD. His new carpentry business keeps his grief and anxiety in check, as do the strong relationships he has with his dad and Rafe, the new sheriff.
There are multiple POV's to intrigue you - including from Rufus, which are adorable and informative! A few future matches are also introduced, Rafe and Bronwyn appear to be a potential, along with Xanthe and Blaine. I'm really hoping to see more of the incomparable Mae. There is spice but it's not over the top and it's in keeping with the pace of the story. I did worry for WIllow when she hares off on her own, that temper nearly did her in!
I loved that the author dropped in little bits of her own life, including her studies here in the UK. an overarching storyline which is going to be threaded through all the books in the series and I can't wait to see what is revealed next. There is This looks like being another fabulous series!
This first book in the series, a romance suspense story, starts with a bang and will keep the readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. After years away from the island, Willow is back when she inherits her grandmother’s home. A home that holds fond memories with her grandmother, her brother and his friends. Tripp was Willow’s brother best friend and has loved Willow for many years. But after the death of her brother during a mission, Tripp’s own injuries, and his feelings of guilt from that mission, hekeeps to himself. Seeing Willow again brings old feelings back in addition to the secret he has kept from her and her family. But staying away from her is almost impossible. Especially when illegal weapons are found near her home and she seems to be in danger. Can Tripp keep WIllow safe? Will divulging his part in the mission be the end of the new friendship and possible relationship? This was a great start to the series and from the intriguing secondary characters, it promises to be another winner by this talented author. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Now that is how you start a new series!! Holy cow am I invested. Willow is coming back to the island that holds many memories for her…good and bad. She is ready for closure…but has no idea what is coming her way. Tripp has mixed emotions seeing Willow. He is smitten with her beauty and misses her…but there is guilt eating away at him. This book has layers upon layers of an intense story. A story about past friendships, emotional memories and everything in between. Willow and Tripp have a lot of healing to do..can they truly do that together?!? We hope so…because these two belong together. Then there is the suspenseful story that is tangled into this story so perfectly. It’s not a Kaylea Cross story without a villain with a mission…and a voice. This story is told from many perspectives…and I was Here for it. There is even a surprise voice…that I seriously couldn’t get enough of!! This was a perfect introduction to a series that I am extremely excited about! I can’t wait to see what comes our way next.
I really enjoyed Mortal Remains. Willow and Tripp were both great characters who had a deep connection and solid chemistry. Getting to know them both, what they’d been through, the pain they’d endured was vital to getting to know their relationship and them as people. Tripp had been through so much trauma and you could feel the pain he still felt and how hard he had worked to get to a better place. Willow had also been through so much loss and you could tell she still had a lot of hurt but was also determined that moving back to the island was her new start and to really embrace what made her happy. I really liked how passionate they both were about their creative jobs. The mystery was done well and I think we’ll definitely see it continued through to book 2 of this series. I freaking adored Rufus and loved reading his perspective- I think we definitely got a big clue at the end of his last perspective. I really enjoyed getting to know the rest of the Skeleton Island residents and hope we see more of them in the coming books. Bring on book 2!
I do not like books that do not settle all mysteries at the end. This book does not. Obviously, one is going to have to read the books in the rest of the series to answer all of the unanswered questions. Who was killed at the beginning of the book? Who does the discovered bones belong to? Who shot Daniel? Can the former owner still sell donated property? Will these questions be answered in the next book?
I thing the timing was off a one point in the book. Willow had lunch with Rafe. They met up with Tripp who said "Good morning." I would think it should be good afternoon after lunch. Then Willow had lunch with Mae. I thought Willow had already had lunch. This did not make sense.
Editing mistake with Petyon instead of Peyton.
When did Willow get her car back after the window was broken. Tripp was driving her around to the places she needed to go. Then she just got in her car. I do not remember it being stated anywhere that her car was fixed.
I normally like Kaylea Cross. But I found this book to be rather boring and confusing. Also, I never could figure out what the title had to do with the book.
What a fantastic start to this new series of Skeleton Island, better known as Skelly to the locals😁 Willow hasn’t been home for years but returns to Skeleton Island after the passing of her grandmother when she inherits her property. Determined to get back to things she loves, she adopts a pet🐶 Unfortunately, out and about one day on a walk, they discover something sinister.
Tripp has loved Willow since he was a teen. He hears via Rafe, the new Sheriff that she’s back in town. Their first meeting after not having seen each other for years - and after he sustained injuries when he was overseas - goes better than he expected. But he has a secret which could unravel everything he’s working towards and the future he hopes to have with Willow😢
I loved this story and Willow and Tripp❣️ Feel like I’ve known these characters forever, they are so relatable. Can’t wait for more in this series… I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review❤️
Willow has moved back to Skeleton Island and is living in her grandmother’s house that she left her. She adopts a dog and while walking him, the dog discovers a human bone. Then behind her house, in the woods, they find a cache of ammo. Tripp is former military and worked for a private contractor along with Willow’s brother Peyton. They were working in Syria when Tripp was wounded and Peyton didn’t make it home. Tripp has lived Willow since he was a teenager and when she finds out what really happened to her brother, Tripp is afraid he’ll lose her. But someone doesn’t want Willow and Tripp investigating the ammo and they try to run Willow off the road. Will Tripp save her in time and will Willow forgive Tripp? The first in a new series and I loved it! Action. Steamy. Secrets. Friends to lovers. Will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved the dog. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
I’m a long-time fan of romantic suspense books and Kaylea Cross. She writes edge-of-your-seat romantic thrillers I can’t seem to stop devouring. She’s on the short list of authors I 1-click without reading a blurb. She’s back with an all-new series with Mortal Remains. Set on an island in the Pacific NW, this book is suspenseful and emotional. It’s not as fast-paced as some of her previous stories, but it’s the beginning of a series, so more world-building is necessary. She does this in a way that is interesting without being a boring information dump and introduces several intriguing secondary characters I’m very interested in finding out more about in the upcoming stories. As usual, I didn’t want to walk away from this story until I finished. It's just one more reason in a long (back)list of reasons that Kaylea Cross is a top favorite of mine!
In the first book we are transported to Skeleton island where residence seems lives the quiet and nothing ever happens here life. But just like any other small town, secrets are all over and always come out at the worst possible time.
Willow moves back to the island after her life in the big city blows up. She inherited her grandmothers house and can’t wait to start fresh. Until she stumbles on old friends and secrets that bad people does not want uncovered.
Tripp served with Willows brother and one look at Willow brings all his past feelings back. When she finds herself in trouble he will stop at nothing to make sure she’s safe. He just needs to make sure his secret doesn’t come out before he’s ready.
I was lucky to read the ARC .WOW normally a new series takes me a while to settle, but this one exploded right from the frist few words,to the last few words. The twist and turns kept me reading one more page so eventually finished the book in one night.I came a cross kaylea Cross's books by accident starting with the Bagram books and with each series she has kept me hanging on with each new character and situation she writes about and this book is no different we have a new set of heroes and bad ass women who know what they want, and a book stealing dog.Once again kaylea Cross has wetted my appetite for the next book which in my opinion is too far away. This is my personal opinion only I hope I have not given out any spoilers.
It opens with a dark, foreboding promise of revenge that turns deadly, leaving you with more questions than answers. Tripp and Willow only deepen the suspense as they step onto the page—their chemistry threaded tightly with pain, history, and unspoken truths. Every interaction sharpens the tension, and despite the turmoil surrounding them, you can’t help but root for them to take a chance on love.
Rufus and his K9 perspective were an absolute highlight, delivering unexpected humor and charm that made me smile. As new characters are introduced and the plot thickens, secrets and danger erupt with guns blazing, sending your pulse racing as survival becomes the goal. This is an intense, gripping start to a series that promises even more twists ahead.
Just the name of the book and the name of the island had me hooked as I started to devour this story!
I love the character of Tripp and all he has going on in his head. This poor man has valiantly served his country, but suffered tremendously both physically and mentally because of it and also has suffered emotionally since he has been home.
I love Willow’s sweet soul. She immediately captured my heart when she adopted Rufus.
Rufus. Such a good, smart and protective boy!
I love the island vibe and Willow’s loving neighbor. A tropical vacation atmosphere vs the back side of a mysterious and dangerous out-of-the-way island gives you goose bumps when feeling watched.
Childhood friends, war, death major misunderstanding. Moving into her grandmother old house gives Willow a new start at life. Getting a dogs and datching up with old friends seem to be going well till its not. Tripp sees the girl he loved and left behind as a decision he made cost her her brother. With Willow now being targeted, Tripp gets the time and chance to grow closer to Willow again till his secret comes out. After learning a bit of what happen back than and having to fight for her life gives both a chance to really discuss their pasts and they decide to take the second chance together but only if they survive.
New series, new characters, new mysteries – what’s not to love about all of that! I really enjoyed meeting all the people on Skeleton Island, learning about the history and the mysteries, and coming along on the continued story of Tripp and Willow as they reconnect. There was some sadness as the story explored their losses from each perspective, but also a beautiful story of healing and redemption. There were suspense and action. Rufus provided a little comic relief, and I loved having his perspective in the story as well. I’m looking forward to more mysteries and more stories as we learn even more about this exciting new place!
This was a great way to kick off a new series. I can already tell that this brand new setting with all its interesting characters is going to keep us on our toes. While I finished reading with quite a few questions, being a long time reader of this author that they'll more than likely get answered in future books. The action and drama more than made up for it though, you'll be unable to look away from cover to cover. I adored this couple together, and really felt for them for multiple reasons. The four-legged rescue was definitely a good bonus addition. I can't wait to see what is next.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Kaylea Cross is one of my favorite authors. Her books are always filled with a “sit on the edge of your seat” excitement.
Mortal remains did not dissappoint. It was filled with the same excitement as her other books. I love how she introduces her characters. It makes me feel as if I have known them forever. Willow and Tripp make a fun couple. I loved the development of the story as well as the foreshadowing of the stories to come later in the series. I am truly excited about the remainder of the stories in this series.
An intense, gripping start to a new series that promises to keep me coming back for more. Willow has come back to Skeleton Island and reconnects with people including Tripp. Both have past traumas that they must work as they spend time together amidst suspense and danger. Lots of twists and questions kept me riveted. I loved Rufus who gave me breaks in the intensity of the story. Lots of secondary characters were introduced and I look forward to learning more about the people of the Island. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Anticipating more revelations in this well written series.
Mortal Remains is the first installment of a brand new series, Skeleton Island by Kaylea Cross. I loved it! It’s suspenseful, but what I loved the most is the way the main characters are portrayed. There’s lots of emotional baggage and trust issues to overcome and I was totally drawn into the story. I couldn’t put it down! I don’t want to give away to much but I guarantee you will love it just as much as I did. The Island atmosphere and secondary characters are amazing so I can’t wait to read the next book in this series! I received this book from the author and this review is my honest opinion
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. A fast paced start of a new series. Lots of secrets are to be revealed. Some are not. A very fluent written book that has you have read through half of it without quite noticing. Willow and Tripp have been growing up together and just reconnected back home. Devastating pasts lay behind both of them. Tripp‘s guilt having him stay away from her until he couldn’t any longer. Fabulous story Thad has you wondering what’s about to happen in the next book.
Willow and Tripp’s story : a new amazing series from Kaylea. Skeleton Island where the bodies are buried. Very intense story, Willow is returning to Skeleton Island, Tripp is already there in a dark place. Meeting again makes feelings come back. Wow, a fabulous start of a new series Kaylea uses her experience from the lessons she took in a great way. Romantic suspense on a small island where everybody knows everyone. Chased and threatened Willow tries to find the way to Tripp’s heart. A must read
Holy moly! This book had me locked in. It's the first book in a new series and I am going to be impatiently waiting for more! This first book focuses on Tripp and Willow. The characters are amazing and interesting, the emotions invoked are true and intense, and there is an overlapping story arc that will be running through the series. Oh yeah, and an adorable rescue dog! I can't wait for more.
Kaylea Cross never fails to bring us amazing stories and this book 1 in her new series is no exception. Willow is unexpectedly brought back to Skeleton Island. When unexpected events bring Willow and Tripp together again, we are drawn into an edge of your seat, page turning story of mystery, romance and suspense that is engrossing from page one. Kaylea Cross is an amazing storyteller. Always on my TBR list.
Welcome to Skeleton Island where secrets and old histories begin to unravel. Willow and Tripp make their way back to the place that holds some of their deepest hurts and heartbreaks. Torn apart by tragedy after tragedy, the return to Skeleton Island sparks dormant feelings they never quite lost. Redemption, sorrow, longing and loss meets suspense and secrets. Kaylea Cross never fails to keep us on the edge of our seats. Can’t wait to see where the rest of this series takes us.
I really enjoyed this story. I has unexpected twist. It also has a cute and smart dog. The author does a great job keeping you engaged in the story and the cliff hanger at the end has me on the end of my seat waiting for the next book.
I received a free copy of this book via BookSprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
