With a Little Help from Their Friends: The Beatles and the People Who Made Them

Rate this book
A surprising, charming, and kaleidoscopic history of the Beatles, told through 100 people close to them

The story of the Beatles is more than just their omnipresent songs and their iconic albums. It’s more than the hair, the clothes, the generational defining spirit. It’s even more than Paul and John and George and Ringo. The Beatles wouldn’t be the Beatles without a little help from their friends.

These four legends didn’t change the world in isolation; their story has an incredible supporting cast of family, friends, managers, producers, publicists, ex-bandmates, fellow musicians, and more. These somebodies shaped the Fab Four through ambition, power, friendship, heartbreak, tragedy, intrigue, humor, lust, and of course, love.

Stuart Maconie’s With a Little Help from Their Friends is the epic story of the iconic band through the people who made them, from childhood days in Liverpool through the crucible of Hamburg and on to international superstardom. It’s a charming mosaic of a book, a fresh look written with deep knowledge and passion.

I'll be honest, despite reading a LOT and being a huge fan of the Beatles, I haven't even skimmed the surface of the many books out there about the Beatles, so going into a book that essentially focuses almost entirely on the "side characters" felt very new and interesting. I listened to the audiobook version, read exceptionally well by the author. Each chapter centered on a different person, each who helped shape the story of the Beatles and their iconic influence on the world. The structure of the book helped keep things fast paced and engaging. Some of the stories were more interesting than others, and the massive volume of characters was possibly a bit overwhelming, where I would sometimes lose track of who we were talking about. Overall, this was a great addition to Beatles history and would likely be enjoyable and fascinating for any fan of the group.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

With a Little Help from Their Friends by Stuart Maconie is a fun and, in its own way, thought provoking read.

The fun part is probably self-evident, if you're interested in the Beatles then reading about them, even the anecdotes and events you're familiar with, will be fun. The thought provoking part maybe isn't something you expect from a fun book about the Beatles. Maconie comments, on just about every person he includes, how whatever role they played was yet another puzzle piece that fit together to create the sensation they became. There is always the chance, however small the connection, that things could have been different. And, if you think about that in relation to the Beatles you may well think back on your own life and wonder what might have been different, whether positive or negative, if some of the little things hadn't happened when and how they did. Yeah, I know, I sometimes read more into a book than is there, but it also makes so many books much more personal.

While my parents and/or my sister had bought their early albums for me, the first album, by anyone, that I bought with my own money was Revolver. Until Katrina I had all of their US releases to that point and several of their UK releases (I was a Navy brat), so they were a big part of my formative years. Like many other Beatles fans I have read many books and watched many documentaries about them, yet this volume still works. Mainly because a lot of what we know about these other people we read in relation to some other bigger topic. This book brings all of this information together in one place. I can read about the person while focused on their story rather than while I am thinking about some aspect of the Beatles within which the anecdote is buried.

While obviously recommended for Beatles fans, well, the ones who don't think they belong to some secret club with special knowledge. It does seem like every other fan thinks they are the biggest fan ever and for always. Oh well, anyway, I also think this will be a fun read for those who like to read biographies. This isn't a biography but each entry is a bit of a biography of the person who touched the Beatles. If the part you enjoy about biographies are the little stories then you will enjoy this even if you're just a casual fan of the Fab Four.

Any life-long Beatles fan (like yours truly) knows the story of how they came to be, how they exploded around the world, how they fell and every other part between. What a lot of life-long Beatles fans may not know small side stories of those who helped the Fab Four get to there. Stuart Maconie's "With a Little Help from Their Friends" was a refreshing peak into the even bigger Beatles-verse that we only know from the narratives that were fed to us throughout history. From these people, little sparks ignited the imagination and inspiration of four of the greatest songwriters in history (I'll give it to you, Ringo).

What I loved about this was that everything was short but direct. Simple yet telling. Much like reading a description on the back of the book — you get enough information to draw you in but your curiosity leads you to other stories to fill in the gaps.

We see many familiar names and discover new ones. We hear little stories of who John, Paul, George and Ringo were from the pre-fame days. But what is amazing is the exact string of events that lead the four of them to form this band.

Any Beatles fan will enjoy this. Any history fan will enjoy this.

Little high school me would be going crazy over the fact that there’s a new Beatles book. Adult me loves that this book exists and that it tells the story of the Beatles through the people around them. Teenage me would have absolutely eaten this up.

Maconie’s writing lets the reader take a deeper dive into the story of the Beatles through the perspectives of those who were there at the time. The book highlights the connections, relationships, and roles of everyone involved not just the Fab Four the world already knows. It makes the Beatles’ world feel much bigger, more human, and more interconnected.

I enjoyed was how the book gives attention to the people behind the scenes who helped shape the band’s journey and legacy. It adds depth to a story that many Beatles fans may think they already know, making it feel fresh and personal again. If you are a music nerd or just a major beatles fan I think you would really enjoy this book

This entertaining and informative book tells the epic story of the Beatles through the lens of the people who shaped them: family, friends, managers, and fellow musicians. The target audience seems to be readers (especially Brits) who are familiar with Beatles lore. Others may occasionally feel as if they’re missing something, but not enough to affect their enjoyment of the book. The audiobook narration is well done.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 is an intriguing history on The Beatles!

I enjoyed the author's narration and found it easy to listen to - a pleasant voice with clear chapter delineation and varied inflections for voices. Each chapter focuses on a different person, making it an easy book to listen to here and there to absorb different crumbs of history. I was invested to hear about those in their inner circle who shaped them!
