The Inheritance Games meets Caraval in this YA contemporary fantasy debut about a girl thrust into the intoxicating and dangerous world of magical high society.
Sometimes you have to kill a dream to escape a nightmare.
Nora is the opposite of lucky. She’s still wrangling her late father’s debts when a mysterious illness lands her brother in the hospital. But her fortunes take an unexpected turn when she wins the lottery to attend the Lamour family’s exclusive, magical Dream Gala.
If Nora can win over the Lamour heirs, she’ll get a coveted spot on their magical training program—and the money she needs to save her brother.
There’s just one problem: Nora never bought a lottery ticket.
Determined to discover who wants her at the gala—and why—Nora plunges headfirst into magical high society. Caught up in a decadent world of brutal billionaires and cutthroat celebrities, Nora is soon in over her head and entangled in a messy love triangle.
When her search for answers uncovers a sinister conspiracy, will Nora stay silent or risk the wrath of a family powerful enough to get away with murder?

Was this one of my favourite reads of 2025? Yes! Was I stressed during my entire read?? Also yes 🙂↕️
Folks this book is not just an absolutely gorgeous cover 😤 it’s an intoxicating fantasy thriller filled with ball gowns, magic, and deception 👀
In this book, magic is a pharmaceutical product, produced and controlled by the Lamour family. If you can afford the magic 𝘓𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘮 pills, it can mean the difference between priority medical treatment and death. When Nora’s dad was in a car crash, she was given the choice of a standard surgery with a slim chance of success, or a levincium-moderated treatment with a 96% chance of a full recovery, but an $887,000 price tag. She couldn’t afford the latter.
Each year the Lamour family throw a magical Dream Gala, filled with billionaires and celebrities, and you can enter the lottery to win a ticket to attend alongside them. This year Nora is the lucky winner, but she never actually bought a lottery ticket. Who wants her at the Gala? And why???
Wrangling her dead dad’s debts & her brother’s illness, Nora decides if she can win over the Lamours, she could get a spot in their Levic training program, and the money she needs to save her brother. She believes with Levic training & access to the supply, she could help save the lives of people like her dad.
You really don’t know who to trust in this book, and my girl Nora truly goes through it all. It got to the point where I decided to whip out the tabs to track all the suspicious things happening 🕵️
I highly recommend this book to fans of Caraval and The Cruel Prince. Nora gave me major Jude energy, and I honestly loved all the characters so much! In terms of romance, I just didn’t know who to root for, I’d be happy if Nora ended up in a quad with all of them tbh 💁🏾♀️ There was so many delicious tension filled moments between the characters & I loved the bisexual representation 💖
Thank you to Allen & Unwin for the ARC & honestly the coolest PR box I’ve ever received 🤩😭
thank you allen&unwin for the review copy :) all views are my own
an intriguing ya urban fantasy with a super unique romance subplot !!!
nora is desperate to become a dream engineer and finally have access to levic - the life saving magic that runs the world. but when she gets selected for the dream lottery she didn’t enter, nora’s life becomes entangled with the rich and power lamour family. together with an awesome cast of characters, nora must solve complex and truly fascinating mysteries and ultimately uncover the truth behind the lamour family’s prevailing success.
i loved the academia, the (true) love triangle, jet setting and interesting magic. i only wished nora was developed a little more before being thrown into the plot!
I lovedddd this book. Take ultra-rich vibes and blend it with a side of whimsical magic, and then throw in a smart and realistic FMC who gets dropped in the deep end - then you've got this book. The magic system was so cool, I loved that it was pharmacology based. The science nerd in me found it so intriguing. I also really enjoyed that this book explored the implications of magic use on society, including regulation requirements and inequities that it creates!
The only drawback for me was there were aspects to the romance subplot that weren't my fave. However I can overlook that when the novel as a whole is such a unique, gripping, standalone fantasy!
Thank you to Allen & Unwin NZ for the gifted copy for review.
This Dream Will Devour us & you will devour this book. 💅
Emma Clancey’s debut is an original YA fantasy thriller - think The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games wishes) but with a little magic. 🧪✨
Nora, is a studious 18 year old who’s determined to become a Dream Engineer and work towards righting the inequalities in a society where problems can *literally* be solved with a magic potion. Magic meets late-stage capitalism in pill & liquid form known as levincium, and it’s 100% owned and controlled by the elite Lamour family. After losing their father due to a car crash and being unable to afford levincium-assisted treatment that would have saved his life, Nora and her brother are struggling to make ends meet when her brother has a sudden medical episode and is in a coma.
Nora’s world is turned upside down again when she ‘wins’ a lottery she never entered and receives an invitation to the Lamour family’s prestigious dream gala. Nora has no love for the Lamours, or desire to bare witness to an extravagant display of wealth and levincium that could have saved her father. HOWEVER, Nora is wily and she knows if she plays her cards right she can get the best treatment for her brother and a guaranteed opportunity to become a Dream Engineer.
Healthcare for all? Slayed. Bringing down elites? Slayed. Love triangle? Slayed. Gay? Slayed.
I loved this book!! It’s super fast-moving and there’s so much action. This is an urban fantasy that literally takes you around the globe and offers plenty of surprises. I think this is a fantastic representation of upper-YA writing and it really shows what I love about YA. The characters play off each other really nicely and each one has a clear beginning, middle and end (back to basics!!!). There were definitely a few things that I found easy to predict but if I have fun while doing it, that’s not a negative for me.
The biggest praise I have for this book is around the magic system and more specifically how it’s used. In my opinion, there’s enough explanation to make sure the reader knows what they need to, otherwise there is a bit of ambiguity, BUT it’s not used as plot armour!!! WHAT A RELIEF! There were several points in the story where it would’ve been so easy to resolve a conflict by throwing in ‘oh the potion can do this too!’ but she doesn’t happen and I love her for that. Another bonus is you do not need to like/read fantasy to pick this up! I can see fans of all genres getting stuck into this book.
This Dream Will Devour Us had me intrigued from the very start. I didn’t know a lot going into this book as the synopsis doesn’t give a lot away, but I would honestly recommend going in blind. The whole time I was just along for the ride and what a ride it was.
I really enjoyed the ‘magic’ in this book, which is basically just a drug that lets the user manipulate their surroundings. The setting was really interesting as well as we were following our main character around the world- New York, Paris, Sydney. The mystery element was definitely something I heavily enjoyed as well as I didn’t see any of the plot twists coming. By far my favourite part about This Dream Will Devour Us has to be the found family and all the characters in this book. Everyone is the friend group truly cares for each other and it was nice to see uber-rich people accepting and befriending the main character even though she was struggling financially.
Nora doesn’t believe in luck. Her life is nothing but helping pay off her father’s debt after he passes and tutoring spoiled rich kids. But when a strange illness affects her brother and lands him hospital, Nora’s world suddenly is thrown off her axis, especially when she wins the lottery to the grand Dream Gala. The only this is, she didn’t buy a ticket. As secrets unravel and hearts break, Nora has to fight for herself, for her brother and protect her heart when things become a little tricky.
Firstly, thank you NetGalley for the arc which I unfortunately didn’t finish because I was in a reading slump. But when I finally picked it up again after buying it, I’m so glad I got to read this!
As mentioned before, it was addictive on the front that it was a page turner, full of so many mysteries that it kept me on edge; It was luscious and magical but not in the magic sense that you’d find it to be. It was magic based on science through the use of a drug called levic which enhanced your senses to chemical elements. This was definitely an interesting and fun way to describe this type of power. Which made it all the more reason to enjoy this book. The author was so creative in this with certain plot points that it just made my head explode. This was so fresh it was unputdownable.
The romance was beautifully written too. Although, the ending made me sad; what did she write in the letters!? I say the romance was interesting because omg it was a love triangle - or rather a touch complicated - which had my head in a spin. Nora was great for both LI’s in this story.
The dynamic of each character was greatly written, so much so, I wouldn’t be able to choose if I were to pick a favourite. Nora is strong, smart, brave and knows how to bargain. Remy is stoic, cold secretive and mysterious, but underneath the mask he puts up, he’s just a normal sweet kid with flaws. Dom is hilarious, sweet and flirtatious but he has a good heart and knows how to stand his ground. Angela is honestly the sweetest friend you could ask for and it didn’t matter that she was a different social class from Nora, she still wanted to be friends. The other characters you’ll get to know will take you for a ride for sure.
Overall, if you want a bit of magic that isn’t exactly magic, this book will take you on a journey that you will love. The rich lifestyle and the glamour was AMAZING! I want more from this author if she writes another!! Even if it’s a small novella of what was written in the letters? I’d take that 😭 cause I NEED TO KNOWWW
I’m not sure what’s more addictive this book or Levic. I devoured this thrilling YA Fantasy, I thoroughly enjoyed its plot and host of characters. The author has done a brilliant job at laying out an intricate narrative that kept me hooked and tidied up all the loose ends in a captivating conclusion.
I’m sad I didn’t like this because I was so excited to pick it up 😣 something about this story just did not work for me. I found the “magic” hard to understand (it just did not make sense to me? Idk if it needed to be explained more?) and I just didn’t care about the characters, they all felt really surface level. Also - I hate love triangles and this one was super weird 🫠
Expected more .. the interesting part wasn’t even explored, the potential was there but it felt more like a weird love drama than a properly explored fantasy. The mystery was kinda non-existent.
This Dream Will Devour Us is a fast fantasy thriller that will leave you spellbound. It draws you into this glittering world of the rich, famous, magical, and dangerous.
In this book, magic is a medical product, produced and controlled by the Lamour family. If you can afford the magic levic pills, it can mean the difference between priority medical treatment and death. But for the rich and famous, this drug is just a way to be entertained and control those around them.
The book was set in our world but with this magically enhanced twist. It was easy to read and the author did a wonderful job of crafting the magical gala, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about all the different performances by the Dream Engineers and the mechanisms of the magic system. I thought it was so creative and unique!
The plot had aspects of the classic YA novel but took it in a direction I was not expecting. The mystery and tension build throughout the book, and I found myself struggling to put it down! There were so many secrets and lies hidden throughout this world, and we discovered them alongside Nora.
Nora was such an amazing character. She knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to ask for it. She gets caught in this struggle for power among the rich and keeps her principles throughout it all. Plus, I loved her interactions with everyone; she was such a real character, and I felt drawn to her immediately. The other characters were also written very well; they were complex and all had such intricate, albeit painful, backstories and secrets that meant you could never truly know whom to trust. The banter between them was also amazing, I loved the little friendship (and more) that blossomed between the main characters.
At first I was scared this was going to be a classic love triangle but it turned out to be amazing and geometrically accurate. The relationship between Dom, Nora and Remy was messy and filled with the back and forth, the will they, won't they but it was done so well. There was romantic tension, batner and beautiful moments between all three. Plus a lot of bisexual rep and that ending was just perfect.
While the characters drove this story, the plot was also well-thought-out and crafted an amazing mystery, which kept me intrigued the whole time. By the middle, I was wishing there was a bit more action, but the ending completely satisfied me!
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone wanting an enchanting and intoxicating YA fantasy thriller with romance and mystery. It crafts a whimsical, magical experience filled with ball gowns, banter and secrets in the ultra-rich world of the Lamours. It's also got a side of fake dating, revolution and messy, amazing characters. If you loved the Inheritance Games and Caraval, definitely pick this one up! My only negative is that it left me wanting more, and I can't believe this is not a series!
Thank you Allen & Unwin for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review!
Riveting, magical and addictive.
Nora has never been lucky. Ever since her Dad’s death, she’s been trying to scrape together enough money to pay for rent, look after her brother and afford the textbooks she needs. All she’s ever dreamed of is becoming a Dream Engineer and having a safe, secure and rewarding future. But when something strange happens to her brother, Nora is willing to do anything to get him back. Even if it means lying and pretending to be someone she’s not.
Each year, one lucky person wins a lottery ticket to attend the Lamour family’s Dream Gala. It’s an opportunity thousands and thousands of people are desperate for. To catch a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes of the Lamour family and bask in their wealth? Once in a lifetime. And to make things more interesting, Remy - the youngest Lamour brother - is splashed all over the media due to a love letter being leaked. It’s the perfect opportunity to get inside information and find out what is truly going on in the famous billionaire family.
Nora is beyond shocked when she finds out she’s the lucky recipient of this year’s lottery ticket. Everything in her screams that something is amiss, but maybe it’s her turn to get lucky and have something go her way for once. She follows the Lamour family and tries to do exactly what they say. But Nora has never been good at following rules and when the news gets a story that’s the complete opposite of what they were going for, Nora’s whole future is up in the air.
As she starts spending more time with the Lamour brothers, she begins to see past the facade they have to put up for the public and she can’t help but pity Remy. But then Nora reminds herself of all she’s lost because of their greed over the magic they produce and how if she’d had access to it, her Dad would still be alive. Still, one can’t help but pity someone who, from the outside, looks like they have it all, but inside.. they’re struggling more than you could ever know.
Nora tries to play their games but finds herself tangled in a web of lies and deceit. She doesn’t know who she can trust anymore and to make matters worse, her brother’s condition isn’t improving and Nora’s whole future is up in the air. Will she make it out alive?
I loved this one so much! I found myself flying through the pages, devouring the story, desperate to find out what would happen next! From the first page to the last, I was hooked and wanted to know how Nora’s story would end!
Perfect for fans of a young adult fantasy thriller, brimming with deception, magic and romance!
Between not having much reading time this year (sickness, motherhood, life), and just not vibing with sooooo many books I've picked up, I have been SOLIDLY in my DNF era. So let me tell you how nice it was to enjoy this book over a few days after half heartedly reading and putting down MANY the last few months.
This is a Young Adult (I'd personally say Upper or New Adult with the drug/magic themes). The magic system is quite unique - its based on ingesting a drug and then being able to manipulate the things around you should you be sensitive to it. But this drug is VERY expensive, and one very, very rich family controls the substance. So unless you are rich, you pretty well only get to admire from a distance.
This rich family in charge are basically royalty in this world, and the two sons seem to be everyone's obsession. There's parties, and you guessed it, you have to be rich to attend. However, there is a lottery for one lucky person to win every year to attend and brush shoulders for the night. Our FMC wins this lottery (but she didn't even enter 👀), and from there, her life gets verrrrrry interesting entering this world.
The relationships in this are M E S S Y. There is a love triangle, bisexual chaos (as per authors trope list) and a lot of the time, I was just thinking, wait, who are we interested in now? Still? Again? But what about???? 🤣 Honestly, upon finishing, I am still not entirely sure how "all of that" worked out, but I guess teenagers will be teenagers? IDK, but I enjoyed the story, the chaos, and the quickly moving plot none the less. thanks to the publishers for sending me a copy!
ITS A STANDALONE?!???? I’M CRYING I WANTED MOREEEEE EMMA PLS WRITE MORE!!!!!!!!
it’s been so so long since i’ve been this obsessed with a debut but omg the way i was HOOKED on the first page like abdjdhnekedn I’M NOT OKAYYYYY
the inheritance games x caraval comp is so so accurate but this is even better than them both???! I’M NOT KIDDING I’M ACTUALLY SO SAD THIS ISN’T A TRILOGY OR SOMETHING PLS THERE’S SO MUCH POTENTIALLLL I JUST NEED MOREEEEE
as a fellow ex pharmacology student i felt very smart & also very dumb reading this (bcos let’s be honest i accidentally took pharmacology when my goal was… idk not that, so guess who would never be able to be a dream engineer irl bcos she can’t even remember what 500mg/5mL means??)
ALSO GEOMETRICALLY ACCURATE LOVE TRIANGLES ARE THE ONLY VALID LOVE TRIANGLES I LOVE OUR LIL TRIO (+ ange) SO SO MUCH
the writing style was so so fun and quippy and addictive and so easy to absorb i felt like i was on levincium like idk i felt like i had some moderately high expectations going into them and i’m literally in shock that it was even better than i imagined??? like a chapter in i’m like damn this has 5 star potential PLEASE LET IT BE A FAVE I HAVEN’T HAD A FAVE IN AGES AND ABDJDJDJD I LOVED IT 😭😭😭
anyways thank you so so much a&u for the arc & pr box!!
'This Dream Will Devour Us' is an urban fantasy novel set in an alternate version of our modern day world, where a drug colloquially known as 'levic' grants the user the ability to perform magic. It is advertised as YA, but some of the themes present (i.e. drug use, violence, sexual themes) would have me recommend this for an upper YA/into NA audience.
Nora is 18 years old and studying for the big exam that will hopefully earn her her dream job. Dream Engineers use levic to perform grand feats of magic, and develop new magic to be used in everyday life. Despite this dream, Nora has never actually touched the drug as it is prohibitively expensive; with both parents deceased, she and her older brother are barely surviving day to day. Everything changes when a series of events grants Nora a direct connection to the Lamour brothers, the very family who owns the patent to levic.
This book was fun, but predictable and a little off the rails at times. I saw all of the big reveals and twists coming, but I could not have predicted just how crazy all of the events of this book's romance sub-plot were going to be. It's a love triangle in the true sense, and while it all felt like it happened a little quick I can kind of get it - teenagers are known for being hormonal after all. The characters in this book are impulsive and not always thinking things through, which again rings true for the ages they are.
I think older teens will enjoy this one. I found myself frequently questioning Nora's decisions and how she was missing such obvious facts, but I had a good enough time none the less.
*Thank you to NetGalley and Allen & Unwin for providing a digital copy to review*
I love stories that feel unique, and this one definitely qualifies. I would describe it as Gossip Girl meets fantasy, and includes backstabbing and the rich thinking they can do what they like.
The magic in this world is thanks to a drug that is owned by one family, making them basically untouchable. Every year, they host the Dream Gala (basically the MET Gala but with magic), and the average person can buy a ticket in hopes of attending. Our FMC, Nora, has not had the best luck, but somehow, without buying a ticket, she wins the spot.
While this book is YA, it didn’t feel like it at all, and I kind of forgot that the characters are basically teenagers. All the characters are complex, with every chapter making you constantly question who to trust. I really loved this aspect as it kept me engaged with the story.
It’s incredibly fast-paced with the characters constantly jetting off to different countries and uncovering more information. There is a bit of a love triangle, which I’m usually not a fan of. However, this one I liked and it had a somewhat satisfying outcome at the end of the book.
This book kept me hooked till the end and had so many twists I never saw coming, which was amazing.
The writing style of Emma instantly had me hooked, and Remy is my style of catnip character (and I will remain bummed that he didn't get constant ink time).
The cover is gorgeous, but it did make me cautious to pick it up initially, thinking it might be a book about female values and needs being squashed. I was pleased to find out that wasn't the case, and how the cover intricacies became relevant as the story unfolded.
This was a good balance of fantasy (in that it wasn't too much) with enough moving parts that you were left curious about it, but constantly distracted with left of topic plots.
It was nice that the romance was a little tangled, a little complicated, and generally not too linear. Life, especially for the youthful and luxurious can be like that I suspect. It was nice to read it and not be exhausted by the protagonist.
- vague spoilers below -
There were some bits towards the close of the book that made it feel a little holey. The levic run time was particularly ? but I appreciated that it just dictated when it was/was not a thing. I did find that Henri was a little 2D in being a bit gullible and not running a tighter ship. I presume this comes from a lifetime of being a little (lot) untouchable, but also, be a little more strategic, and I think the mother being more in the picture wouldve made more sense.
--
Generally a nice and grand read with a well wrapped ending that came together nicely.
I am keen to see what Emma brings out next, and hope I'm lucky enough to get more signed copies in my future.
This Dream Will Devour Us is a stunning YA fantasy novel with lots of mystery, magic, and chaos.
The storyline in this book was positively addictive. This book was a perfect blend of fantasy, mystery, and drama, and I was captivated from start to finish. The magic system is founded in pharmacology and the explanations behind the magic were incorporated into the story so well. No massive info dumps here!! I loved that this book addressed how magic would affect societies and laws as well. We see the effects of monopolies (I’m looking at you big pharma companies) and the implications of magic use, specifically on the working class.
I didn’t know going into this book that it was poly. I thought it was going to be a love ‘triangle’ situation and that Remy Lamour was the main love interest, until one scene and dialogue between Remy and Dominic De Silva (Dom) had thinking ‘is this fighting or flirting’, then processing the thought and RUNNING to the author’s instagram where my suspicious were confirmed. So. TRUE love triangle .𖥔 ݁ ˖ All the characters were so chaotic and I loved each of their quirks and personalities so much.

A PROPER love triangle, magic mixed with science, queer rep all around AND a clear writing style throughout?? I'm in love. This read was so much more than I was expecting, and I hope it picks up popularity so the author can keep extending this series. Yes, the main twist and villain were clear from the beginning. With them and the miscommunication trope being heavily used, I dock 1/2 a star. Even with all of that... Incredible. I can't wait for my early onset dementia so I can reread this like it is the first time.
I haven’t picked up a fantasy book in a while as they’ve been failing to hold my attention, but this one was amazing. The first fantasy I’ve read based in modern times, and I loved it. It was fantastical and magic but at the same time believable. This debut was phenomenal and I look forward to reading what Emma next comes out with. Highly recommend this one!
This was great for the most part. Steadily paced, relatively intriguing but a little predictable. But it kind of introduces the concept of a throuple and I dont know how I feel about that in a YA book 🤔
This was fun. I will need to seek justice for the fact that we didn’t get the polyamorous relationship that was hinted at with the love triangle off the ground though.

This was my first ever ARC so super grateful for the chance to read this before it's officially released.
Firstly, I absolutely devoured this book, literally could not put it down. This book was a really good book, the characters, storyline, magic system, and twists were all great. The main downside I had was that it was very fast paced and I felt as though a little more breathing room could be had at time, but this could also be a side effect of my reading through it so quickly.
