Rate this book
Building an engaging and thriving classroom community is the goal of every teacher. But while conventional classroom management relies on rewards and punishments to create a culture of compliance, teachers know that classroom communities and children deserve more and better. In Lessons in Community, elementary school teacher Mari Dean shares an asset-based and step-by-step process for reimagining classroom management and social-emotional learning. Whether it’s helping students navigate friendship issues, identify their own emotions and learn tools and strategies to regulate, advocate for themselves, or problem solve the day-to-day issues of classroom life, Lessons in Community provides strategies, lessons and stories to get you started or help you take the next step in your journey.

Inside this book you’ll

● 24 classroom lessons organized around themes of regulation, relationships, problem solving and agency

● Ready-to-use anchor charts, sample teacher language, role play scenarios, and read-aloud suggestions to accompany the lessons

● A process and seed ideas for creating your own responsive lessons

● Photographs, examples, humor, and humanity from a fellow classroom teacher

Grounded in the pursuit of humanizing schools and classrooms where children experience agency and joy, Mari Dean examines both the classroom management practices we must disrupt and those we must work towards to create these places in our own classrooms.

Absolutely amazing! This book offers a powerful reframing of what “classroom management” can look like and what it truly means to build community. And it's full of tangible, ready-to-use ideas for teaching SEL in a way that actually feels authentic and doable.

I especially loved the anchor chart ideas! They’re practical, student-friendly, and easy to implement right away. I’ve already taught a few of the lessons in my own classroom, and they’ve been so helpful in guiding my students and building important life skills in a way that feels meaningful.

So grateful this book exists, it’s one I’ll be coming back to often!

Five stars is not enough. This book is the change that needs to happen in every classroom. Looking at the classroom as a microcosm of society, Mari Dean provides explicit, practical ways to create an environment where students support and celebrate each other. This book supplies supports for teachers to help their students feel big feelings and navigate them safely and effectively.

When a child is able to understand their emotions and use strategies to regulate themselves, they are preparing themselves for emotional growth and self-confidence. What does emotional growth and self-confidence lead to? Students ready to learn.

This book will give every teacher (and parent!) the tools to prepare their child for learning.
