Rate this book

Lalu takdir pun bermula.

The illustrations are beautiful but the smell of the black paper is so strong buat F headache.

It's not bad... but...

This is the story of Inara and Zayd, two lost souls who met in the city of Cairo. Inara, building a life whilst studying and Zayd doing the same. Both felt instant connection but the road to them being together isn't paved with roses. From other people interfering with their relationship to black magic and unresolved past, these people have a lot of growth to do before they be together.

On the surface, the premise isn't bad. The writing whilst a bit melancholic to my liking but I've read similar books like this from Indonesian writers I'm fine with it.

There's a lot of headjumping within one chapter but it is something I eventually get used to.

However, I feel like the conflict of this story is so contrived. The beginning of their conflict is when Zayd DID NOT TEXT HER to explain about his own situation. I hate it when this happens in the age of Whatsapp like bro literally could text her before he left and save her from feeling abandoned but nope. Because of this initial separation, everything starts to spiral from Imani sowing seeds for Inara to abandon her feelings to Aliya forming obsessions towards Zayd. If only he texted in this age of Whatsapp. This kind of conflict catalyst is only believable in the age of carrier pigeons and Morse codes.

I don't believe Zayd and Inara's relationship at all. I hate this insta-love relationship. It would've been better if the story starts at their first meeting and then make them tell each other their past through flashbacks. That way, their growing romance and emotional connection would feel believable.

I also felt Malik's 180 character change feels out of the blue and contrived for the sake of pushing Inara and Zayd together. Like we read the story from his POV too and nothing in his personality suggested he was an abusive man so it feels really tacked on.

Aliya's story just ends abruptly. Also, how did Zayd found out that Aliya was the one who did black magic to him and Inara? Who knows? Too many plot holes.

I feel like this story falls victim to trying to do too much within short wordcount. They want to cram polygamy, domestic abuse, black magic, jealousy, love-triangle, internalised misogyny but many of these wasn't explored properly and it feels like they just doing it to check on tickboxes.

Ade few part yg hanging n tak bercantum.. buku ni agak melankoli, so pace membaca tu pun melankoli jugak la jdnya.. so for those yg suka baca buku straight forward, buku ni tak berapa sesuai nk dibaca, tp kalau nk try, silakan..

Watak Inara ni mcm tak cukup serik n tak cukup nekad untuk kunci hati even dr awl digambarkan sebegitu.. buktinya, dia masih goyah nk pilih antara 2 lelaki.. Malik atau Zafriel..

Zafriel, nothing special..Juz mmg dia kejar n tggu inara smpai sudah la.. happy ending..

Dr segi appearance, buku ni guna paper hitam dgn tulisan putih..mata aku agak tak selesa sbb latar gelap..and bau paper ni agak tajam, so sometime rase rimas jugak kot..Tp, aku beli buku ni at 1st place pun sebenonya sbb paper dia hitam la..haha.. lain dr yg lain..

Biasa je. Ayat okay terlalu tersurat. Tak sesuai untuk manusia yang jenis straight to the point. But overall okay untuk dibaca. Keep it up. Goodluck untuk next novel.
