Fire in the Stars

‘Crazy love makes people do crazy things…’

Romeo and Juliet meets Romper Stomper in this compelling love story about the ‘perfect’ prefect who falls for a rebellious bad boy in Tasmania’s underworld.

A dux with her grades but naïve in love, Hanna’s ‘fairytale’ hopes seem desolate when she winds up at a wild party with her bestie—and the notorious Westside Boyz.

There, she ‘bumps’ into Brodie, an irresistible yet troubled young man determined to escape his past. Hanna and Brodie find common ground in a captivating journey of self-discovery, falling crazy in love as they defy Hanna’s parents and pursue their romance in secret. But Brodie carries secrets of his own, and tensions rise as Hanna’s spiteful peers jeopardise her school performance—and apparently her ‘dignity.’

When a drug bust results in Brodie owing a crippling debt, Hanna is targeted and the two embark down a dangerous road. Risking it all for love proves perilous. With challenges mounting and time running out, Hanna and Brodie must decide if their love can survive.

“Bad Boyz – Fire in the stars delves into realistic coming of age dilemmas packed with heart-warming connections and gritty Aussie humour. A very engaging read that had me until the end!”

I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of Bad Boyz: Fire in the Stars.
I was a bit skeptical with this book at first as it is not something I would usually pick up and I’m not the biggest fan of a Romeo and Juliet style of romance. However, in saying that, I did love that aspect in this book specifically. The love Brodie has for Hanna is undeniably beautiful, and I loved reading his perspective chapters. It was very fast paced but the writing of the author includes so many details throughout the book to make it feel cohesive and not as quick as it actually is.
This book had so many funny moments and a lot of times where I was visibly shaking my head and laughing or pausing for a minute to register what I had just read, specifically any scene with the Boyz (and Aido).
As an Australian, this book has to be the most Australian book I have ever read. I absolutely love the slang used, because it made the book feel more realistic. I can’t even say that it was overly used because around me people speak like that on a daily basis. All the characters were represented very well, however I think through it being a fast paced book Hanna’s character got a bit lost in the turbulence of events, but I hope in the second book we’re given more closure and emotional connection.
The cliffhanger at the end has left me with so many questions which hopefully will be answered in the second book (which I need right about now).
Overall the book exceeded all my expectations, and this was such a fun, emotional roller coaster to read! I can’t wait for the next book and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity of being an ARC reader. ❤️

THIS BOOK WAS GOLD!

I loved following Hanna and Brodie's story together. The use of Aussie slang made it even better. I found myself laughing so hard at some of the things they'd say.

Kate is an exceptional author, and I can't wait to read book 2.

The ending had me on the edge of my seat.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Bad Boyz, and wow—what a ride!

I’ve always loved a good Romeo-and-Juliet style romance, and Brodie and Hanna’s love story was undeniably beautiful. I especially enjoyed Brodie’s perspective chapters—they added so much heart and depth. Their relationship felt sweet, engaging, and believable, even amidst the chaos swirling around them.

This book also had me laughing out loud more times than I can count. The Boyz (and especially Aido) brought so much comic relief—every scene with them was pure gold. And as an Aussie, I have to say this is probably the most Australian book I’ve ever read. The slang didn’t feel forced at all; it made the story realistic and authentic, exactly how people around me actually speak.

The pacing is fast and fun, though at times it felt like Hanna’s character got a little lost in the whirlwind of events. She begins as the classic “good girl” and shifts quickly, but I would’ve loved to see her struggle more with her morals before diving headfirst into love. The emotional and angsty moments could’ve been fleshed out more, but I’m hopeful the second book will give us more growth and closure.

And that ending? Total cliffhanger! I closed the book with a dozen questions swirling in my head, desperate for answers. The whole “doomsday weekend” twist did feel a little rushed and left me with some whiplash, but it still kept me hooked right until the last page.

Overall, Bad Boyz exceeded my expectations. It’s a fun, emotional, fast-paced roller coaster with plenty of laughs, some swoony romance, and twists that keep you turning the pages. I’ll never view the Maccas drive-thru the same way again—and I’ll definitely be running to grab book two as soon as it’s out!

⭐⭐⭐⭐ FIRE IN THE STARS 🌠

Book One in the Bad Boyz Series

Wow this read took me down memory lane Thoughts of those teenage years, seems so long ago now. The reminders, iconic locations and landmarks, the language/slang. It's nice to read about local places within this story.

I never thought I would have to think about a Goon box again. Oh the memories indeed lol.

Those first butterfly feelings of young love and how thoughts of, you'd do anything for them, no matter the consequences.

I really enjoyed this read. The storyline flowed really well with a good back history throughout

A quick and easy read.

Introducing our main FMC Hanna. A good girl from a stable household, good academics, works hard after school. Meets our MMC Brodie, the bad boy from the other side of life, who is known to be apart of the Westside Boyz, drugs, parties, jail time, pretty rough.

Hanna and Brodie meet at a party that Hanna's best friend invites her to. They soon notice each other pretty quickly but are separated due to the authorities busting the party.

In their own separate lives they continue to think of each other and are later reunited.

Falling for each other pretty quickly.

Brodie see's a life he longs for, Hannah see's the real boy beneath the exterior.

Past mistakes, traumas, law enforcement, other people mingling play a huge part to force Hannah and Brodie apart. Testing their true love, trust and the willingness to change for a better life. Acceptance and honesty to be a better person.

When things start looking up for Brodie and Hannah, will a suspected visitor who comes back destroy everything?

I really enjoyed Brodie's brother banter, he made me laugh so many times reading
Can't wait to see the next installment of the Bad Boyz Series

Grateful to be selected as an ARC reader! Huge congratulations to Kate for her debut novel. Gosh, what an emotional roller coaster this was—and my jaw is still on the floor …buckle up. 👇

Fire in the Stars follows Hanna and Brodie who fall in love at first sight, despite being complete opposites—she's a good girl, school prefect, never been in trouble; he's a bad boy, in the wrong crowd, morally grey character.

She was allegedly cheated on in her last relationship, and he was in one of the most toxic relationships known to man. He's broken and wants to change for her, but he gets caught up in a bad situation that has him on the run. She goes with him.

It was a bit hard getting into this at first, as I found it challenging to connect to the writing. However, the writing style makes sense; it aligns with characters, the classic Aussie tone, and the overall storyline. After all, they're kids and he's come from a difficult childhood.

I was hooked from about 35% in… allow me to show you just how much with my thoughts:

- Brodie and his ex… 💀

- Hanna going all weird about Brodie going through her bag of donated clothes HAHAHAHAHA

- Not the potential love triangle with brothers!? Also, how are they exclusive and official so fast 😂

- Brodie introducing Hanna to Stretch during the first death anniversary vigil 🥹😭

- The telescope 🥹 the bracelet 🥹🥹 the way he talks about his mum 🥹🥹🥹

- God, Brodie was terrible with Leila! They were to toxic and awful to each other

- GTFO Corey LOSER

- Omg he came back for her …on a horse!? HAHAHAH

- Chapters 21-22 has me STRESSED

- Awwwwwwww the stars 🥹 it was his mum’s birthday too!? Stop 😭

- EPILOGUE OMFG

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for Bad Boys Fire in the Stars and wow—it was not what I expected! That ending? Total cliffhanger. I’ll definitely be picking up the second book.

That said, this was more of a 3.5⭐ read for me. At first, I struggled a bit with the slang since it’s not the way we speak where I’m from. (Can someone say Pash? I had to Google that one!) But after a few quick searches, I caught on and it became easier to follow.

Little bit of spoilers below:

What threw me off more was the whole “doomsday weekend.” It felt very rushed—like all these intense plans were built up only for him to suddenly do the opposite. The twists and turnabouts had me feeling a bit of whiplash.

Still, I did enjoy the book—it had plenty of fun moments, and some even made me giggle out loud. Aido is… well, let’s just say a character in every sense. I only wish the angsty, emotional moments had been fleshed out more. Hanna, especially, could’ve used a bit more growth. She starts as the “super goody girl” and flips so easily, but I would’ve loved to see her really wrestle with her morals before giving in for love.

Overall, a fun, fast-paced read with some laugh-out-loud moments, but I’m hoping for deeper emotional beats in the next book.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but Fire in the Stars surprised me. It was such an amazing experience to read a story that felt unapologetically Aussie, the slang, the banter, the setting in Hobart. It all gave the book a unique authenticity that made me feel right at home.

The story follows Brodie and Hannah, who come from completely different worlds but can’t resist the pull they feel toward each other. Their romance has that Romeo & Juliet tension, with family pressures, secrets, and outside threats always hovering in the background. And yet, there’s a sweetness and depth to their connection that kept me rooting for them the whole way through.

The pacing is sharp, the emotions are heavy, and the side characters (especially the Boyz) brought the perfect mix of chaos and comic relief. The spice is there, but minimal; this book is more about the angst, the danger, and the slow unraveling of two people trying to find their place together.

And then that ending… wow. It left me desperate for the next book and eager to see where Kate Laurie takes Brodie and Hannah’s story next.

As a debut, this is seriously impressive. If you enjoy gritty small-town romances with heart, angst, and an unmistakable Aussie flavour, Fire in the Stars is definitely worth picking up.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fire in the Stars by Katie Laurie is pitched as Romeo and Juliet meets Romper Stomper following Hanna, the perfect prefect, who falls for Brodie, the rebellious bad boy caught up in Tasmania’s underworld. On paper, it’s a gritty, forbidden romance with all the hallmarks of a dramatic love story.

For me, though, this one was a mixed read. The heavy use of Aussie slang and references from goon bags to Lynx Excite definitely gave it a strong sense of place and even reminded me of my own high school years. At the same time, it left me a little confused about when the book was actually meant to be set.

I also struggled to really connect with the characters. While the premise had potential and the story was easy to get through, I found myself a little detached from Hanna and Brodie’s journey. That said, the writing is accessible, and I can see this appealing to readers who enjoy gritty Aussie-flavoured romances.

Overall, it was an easy read with some nostalgic touches, but not quite the right fit for me.

Thank you for the chance to ARC read this book Kate Laurie and The Berry Agency.

This book was actually pretty interesting. I went into it not sure if it would be something I would enjoy as I mostly read Dark romances and Dark Fantasies but found I was actually enjoying the story and characters.

Fire in the stars is set in Hobart, Australia and follows Brodie and Hannah as they deal with the overbearing weight of being from two different upbringings.

Brodie and Hannah fall for each other no matter what anyone has to say about it, or the threats that they are up against.

I will say for people that Arnt Australian may find the language and the way things are said a little hard at first. But I couldn't help myself thinking back when I was younger and really feeling apart of their story.

There is spice but it is minimal and not to descriptive.

As a first book from Kate Laurie, I want to give a big applause as you have me itching for the second now. haha

I was fortunate to be an ARC reader for Bad Boys: Fire in the Stars, and while I really wanted to love it, this one just wasn’t quite for me.
The story had an intriguing premise, and there were definitely some fun, light moments—Aido, in particular, is a memorable character with a lot of personality. I even found myself laughing out loud a couple of times, which I appreciated.
However, overall, I struggled to connect with the book and the characters. I have such a love and appreciation for Aussie authors using the slang and leaning into it!
While this book didn’t quite work for me, I can see how readers looking for a fast-paced, drama-filled read might enjoy it. For my part, I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series—but I appreciate the opportunity to give it a try

Thank you to the author and the berry agency for the ARC read. The author did a fantastic job of setting the story up. The characters were relatively likeable especially Aido. I found that this overall age group of characters was simply too young for me to relate to anymore though. I would recommend this book for 18-30ish year olds more than anyone over that. The book was well written and full of fun Aussie slang. I won’t be picking up the next one but I look forward to seeing if this author writes any further books for a more mature audience.

Thanks to Berry Agency for the ARC! I loved this book - from the first moment Brodie and Hanna met I was hooked. I loved their love story, and the bad boy with good girl trope is always a favourite of mine. I also ended up with such a soft spot for Aido by the end, would love to have more of him in future books 🤞The only thing I found was sometimes the dialogue felt a bit unnatural or cringe, which took me out of the story at times (but also I was probably talking that way at 17). Either way I’m excited to see how Brodie and Hanna’s story progresses especially with that ending!!

Grateful to be one of the chosen arc reader for this. I knew the moment I read the first few lines that I would devour this book lol its was so good! The tension, the good girl/ bad boy trope is sending me - I was locked in! It was such a fun read only cause it felt real too, it was easy to picture the characters and the story in my head. It felt a lil YA for me than what I am used but I enjoyed this book! Would recommend🤏🏼

Was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book. I enjoyed that the story was set in Tasmania as you don’t normally read books set in Tassie! The two main characters were well written and I enjoyed their love story and the twists and turns it brought. Wasn’t expecting the cliffhanger ending! Looking forward to reading more from this author!

3/5 ⭐️ ARC

Thanks to Chloe at The Berry Agency for the early copy of this book.
I wanted to love this, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me. The story line really drew me in initially, but the relationship between the FMC and MMC was just a bit meh for me. I felt a bit too old to be reading this one - with the characters being late high school aged..

There was a lot to like about this book, but I struggled to get past the underage open door scenes many of which flipped past. I finished the book purely because I wanted to know how Hanna and Brodie’s story ended.

I find I’m in 2 minds reading the next book, but the ending was a cliff hanger so I probably will.

Fast, gritty, and super addictive. I loved the Aussie setting and the chemistry between Hanna and Brodie with a dangerous twist. Some parts felt a bit rushed, especially Hanna’s inner thoughts, but the tension and cliffhanger totally hooked me. Can’t wait for book two!

Whilst I really wanted to love this book I fear it just wasn't for me personally.

I have nothing against this author and would just like to mention that her writing is incredibly easy to get into due to the fast pace and I can understand why so many people would find this to be a fun and enjoyable read. I think the main reason I didn't love this book was because it reminded me so much of the wannabe gang members/cool kids I personally went to school with and that just ended up annoying me in the end.

That being said, there were a number of times in this book that I found myself laughing especially where Aido one of the side characters was involved. This is very much a story where a teenage drug dealer tries to turn his life around and continues to make mistakes along the way which is a normal part of life. Our FMC did get on my nerves a little bit though because she was constantly seeking attention but I can chalk that up to teenage immaturity and a teen relationship with the bad boy who everyone wants.

Sometimes the aussie slang just got to be a little bit too much for me and the insta love vibe going on just wasn't for me. The cliffhanger at the end of the book does set it up nicely for book 2 though and I do think it will be more entertaining.

I don't think I will continue on with the rest of this series, but I wish the author all the best!

Fire in the stars - kate laurie
Fire in the stars by Kate Laurie is addictive and fast paced, drawing you in with the uncontrollable love story of Brodie and Hanna. They are polar opposites that instantly create a spark, almost like it’s written in the stars. While Brodie is running from a past life, he pulls in the dux of a private school girl, this isn’t just any bad boy romance, it is one that contains danger, rebellion, and above all the survival of their love. The undeniable slow burn, and morally grey mmc makes for a hook, reading it quickly and being in demand of a second book. The typical good girl bad boy, however they both fall fast without time to catch themselves. This novel is recommended for mature readers. It contains strong sexual content and themes, drug and alcohol use, coarse language and violence. Trigger warnings for domestic violence, mental health and suicide. Keep your eyes peeled for the first installment of the bad boyz series, available for pre-order from 11th August 2025.

This is not the usual genre of book I read, but a friend recommended it so I approached it with an open mind. If I can equate it to a classic, I would draw parallels to Romeo and Juliet. We have a decent girl from a stable household, decent academically, who works hard after school. At the other end of the spectrum, we have Brodie, the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks with a shady past, who is known to be part of a pretty rough gang.

Hanna is invited to a party by her friend, where she meets Brodie. They soon notice each other, but do not have time to connect before the authorities break up the party.

In their everyday lives, they continue to think of each other and meet again, where their relationship deepens quickly. He sees a better, more decent life; she sees past the bad boy exterior to his soft underbelly.

I have seen some negative comments about the use of Australian vernacular. Whilst some readers may find it taxing, it adds realism and spice. The slang immerses you in Australian life, giving you an insight into Aussie culture.

The characters are well developed, particularly the MMC, but I would have liked more POV from Hanna. The action is fast-paced with a complete cliffhanger at the end, leaving you wanting more. I laughed out loud during the read, and it reminded me of my youth, with all the angst of love, of other people coming between you, and of your relationship being tested.
Overall, an excellent debut novel from Kate Laurie, and I look forward to her upcoming second book!!

It took a day after finishing this book to put into words what I just read. Brilliant! Just brilliant 👏 I absolutely devoured it in two sittings .… I have never read a book like this with so many dynamics. The romance was irresistible and the spice a perfect balance of emotional connection and not too explicit compared to what I am use to reading. The story follows Brodie and Hannah in classic Romeo & Juliet style but mixed with Australian humour banter and slang. The BOYZ are hilarious - omg Aido! 😂 With the ever present threats looming during Brodie’s and Hannah’s journeys they brought much needed comic relief specially during the angsty moments - chapters 19 onwards had me on edge till the very end! All up an entertaining fast paced read that had me laughing and crying at the same time. A huge applause to the author Kate Laurie she has wowed with a super impressive debut I cannot wait to see what she delivers next.

Kate Laurie Thankyou for this great book. I discovered Fire in the Stars through ANZBL Book Group and I am glad I did.

Fire in the Stars was the Love Story I couldnt put down, the boy meets girl at a Wild Party, "Brodie" a charming Rogue with a troubled past and the Beautiful Prefect "Hanna" who is the all-rounder role model. The chemistry between the two is electric. I was deeply connected to Brodie's character as a troubled youth who just needed a break. and without spoiling the plot was deeply impacted by his decisions when a project goes wrong and he has a debt to pay.

Now on a lighter note you cant beat the Aussie banter and the Australian references throughout the book.

The plot was confronting at times with themes of Mental Health, drugs and Violence but I felt this allowed me to understand the MMC more.

Fire in the Starts is the Rom-Com that is profoundly raw emotional ride, that is Beautiful and sad at the same time. I highly recommend.

This story follows Hannah and Brodie.
2 teenagers from different sides of the track. They have an instant connection but their interaction only lasted a few minutes.
They met again and this time exchanged numbers. But Hannah's mom interfered.

These were mot the only challenges they faced while trying to stay together.
Brodie is trying to change his life but it seems his past keep finding a way back.

Hannah is determined to break free from her sheltered life and make her own decisions.

This is an amazing love story with a lot challenges which allows for character development.
I fell in love with these main characters. I couldn't put this book down.

It does end on a cliffhanger and the second book is not released yet. But don't let that stop you from reading this one. Trust me you will love it.

Some highlights I particularly loved:

🎅🏻 special applause goes to Aido - that scene near the end “Santa” I'm still on the floor LOL!

🐎 loved the horse!

🌊 beach scene 🩷

😂 Hanna and her best friend at the football (hehehe)

🍔 the funny Maccas jokes

💪 any scene with Aido and the boys pure gold!

Huge applause to the author 👏 a brilliant debut! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Very well done!

I received an ARC copy of this book and wow I enjoyed it so much!!! It exceeded all my expectations and I shall never view the Maccas drive thru the same! 😂 This book was fast paced and thoroughly entertaining. I loved all the characters—Aido deserves a big shout out! Brodie’s and Hanna’s love story is so very sweet and I found their characters to be dynamic, believable and engaging. A fantastic story with many twists and turns, I would have thought more for YA but it does contain adult themes so perhaps could still be suited to older YA readers. Overall a very enjoyable read especially for a debut author and I shall be running for the second one! 🏃‍♀️ 👀

Think Romeo and Juliet but tangled in drug debt, violence and emotional fallout. It's relatable - made me reflect on my past relationships and patterns I have carried. Reflecting on how one thing or person can influence a change so big that you are swallowed up by it.

Brodie is chaotic and I found Hanna to be quite resilient. Her softness stands out against the world she's in. Their relationship is the primary focus and heart of the book - messy, intense and heartbreaking.

This isn't a book I'd typically reach for. The premise is solid, and the setting feels real. But I struggled to connect with the characters and crave more emotional depth.
