Nestled on the rural bluffs above Lake City, Minnesota, Howard's childhood was an emotional void. Each day was a predictable cycle of chores, school, and countless hours on the tractor. His life revolved around responsibilities, with one simple to own the family farm.
Karen flourished as a kid in Rockford, Illinois. But during her teenage years, her world shattered when she discovered she was adopted. This revelation reshaped her sense of identity and belonging, and sent her on a quest to find her biological parents, leading to a turbulent relationship with her mother marked by accusations of deceit.
Their paths crossed at the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus, where Howard's reliable, down-to-earth personality met Karen's energetic, city-girl charm. How can two people from such divergent backgrounds bridge the gap between their worlds and resolve their childhood traumas?
Based on a true story, Finding the A 1960s Love Story is a compelling family legacy memoir that explores the theme of enduring love. This story goes beyond a typical romance—it offers a raw and honest portrayal of a couple who overcame personal challenges, embraced their imperfections, and created a life that stands the test of time. From double dates in a classic Ford Model A to watching Dr. Zhivago, their journey unfolds against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, the Kennedy assassination, and the tides of cultural change.
Perfect for readers who

Forget fireworks and sparks. This is a genuine account of a bond forged in acceptance, hardened by adversity, and destined to last a lifetime. Step back in time and experience a tender portrait of lasting love—proof that when you find “the one,” you hold on forever.
This sweet story makes a perfect palette cleanser after reading a tough serious or heartbreaking book. It is written like a love story novel and yet is also a memoir as well as a reflection of the historical 1960's. Although an easy light read there is a message here of the importance of living a life true to one's self and to make important life decisions with a lot of deliberation. I love the cover picture, but with some bias as my first car was a turquoise VW Beetle !!!!!!
An interesting tale about how one couple found their way to each other in a different time. Even though from the title, we know the outcome, this story unfolded unpredictably for me because of how the author switched back and forth between Karen and Howard’s viewpoints. Karen was adopted and grew up in the city while Howard was raised on a farm. I found myself caught up in their unique stories and the emotional challenges they each faced, constantly wondering how in the world their lives would intersect. The 1960s illustrations added a nice touch to the book. One of the questions of this book that has stayed with me after reading it is how a couple’s chemistry draws them together and sustains them over a long marriage.
