Luna has a popular online channel that allows her to connect with authors and fans of boundary-pushing horror books. She enjoys receiving advance copies of upcoming releases and reviewing them for her audience. She’s got the formula for posting engaging content down to a science.
Soon, Luna will discover that horror fiction, no matter how severe or full of carnage, can’t hold a candle to the horrors of reality.
When an unsolicited manuscript from an aspiring writer is offered to her, it sounds appealing. But there’s more to the offer than she assumed. Much more.
Because danger lurks in Luna’s DMs.
A malicious man harboring resentment for women. A man who thinks not only that women should be repressed but that they should, quite literally, be tied down.
"Why was it that she'd never once heard a song she actually liked emitting from a passing hoopty or a construction site?"
This book is both a cautionary tale and an indictment of the manosphere, it's splatterpunk that remembers that it's supposed to have a point not just an edge. It's quite the departure from Oliver's Genital Rot verse and really goes to show that he is capable of far more than creative kills and torture (though there's definitely some of that in there).
Luna felt like a fully realized character and I really enjoyed her friendship with her bestie but my was she a little too relatable for comfort in some regards. The antagonist is the kind of guy people with half a brain cell, or more. will love to hate (I mean even my snake thought he was gross and she will poop on anything (corn snakes IYKYK)).
It's really impressive to me how the author managed to include so many references and funny bits in the story without ruining the pacing and tension. This book had me both stressed and ugly cackling.
I give it points for the usage of a certain product but for the love of all that is dark who do I have to bribe for one of these splatter authors to use sewer maintenance equipment in their story? I'm serious, I'll pay for someone to write me a story featuring Picote equipment (you can make it off-brand too).
In one of my recent reviews, I stated that Oliver knows how to string a sentence that makes my cold dead heart flutter a little, this time it was "do you want to read an ARC of my book?".
Luna is a rising booktoker in the community. She loves to read and review books online for her followers and online friends. She enjoys the darker books, severe horror, and carnagepunk! She receives ARC copies in exchange for honest reviews. One day she gets a DM from a new author asking her if she would like a copy of his newest book. Luna immediately says yes! But she doesn't know what truly lies ahead for her.
Jarvis Olivier has been eyeing Luna for a while now. He loves her review videos and is obsessed with her. When she agrees to read his book and sends him her address, he loves how easy it was. Jarvis isn't who he says he is and his intentions with Luna are sinister. He won't stop until he gets his girl.
Every booktoker's nightmare! This is the most extreme you can get and you can't stop reading it. You will hate Jarvis! He is one sick and twisted character and you want the worst for him. James went hard with this one. The torture scenes were explicit and vile and you're rooting for Luna the entire time. If you're into extreme, extreme violence and horror, this is a must read!
DNF at 27%. There was just a lot that I couldn’t mesh with here. The dialogue, especially, was really difficult to stick with. I understood that the author was trying to make certain characters and situations sound juvenile. But it was fairly nonstop and, despite being playful, got old very quick. I also couldn’t figure out where this was going. There was some foreshadowing, but nothing substantial enough to keep me hooked in. Like the focus of the writing was in all the wrong places. I’ve read extreme horror and splatterpunk to the moon and back and love it. Unfortunately, some books seem to lack in a lot of ways, hoping that the deluge of gore and depravity will cover all the inadequacies. Given that I barely made it past the quarter mark, I may be completely wrong on my critiques. But, based on what I viewed from other reviews, probably not. This needed to streamline its approach and make the case to not just be another bloodbath, with random plot tidbits tossed in, attempting to justify itself.
This is my second ARC from James, I was super excited when he asked if I’d like an ARC as I know his writing style is so fast paced & relentlessly brutal & yeah this was exactly that!
Lee is your typical arrogant rich guys kid, he thinks the world owes him a living & women are beneath him, they’re objects meant to be used and abused! He really is a vile human
Luna is a book loving influencer, she loves her extreme horror & has her own channel speaking about her reads. When she gets a message for a physical ARC she doesn’t think twice about handing out her address for it.
And this is going to be her downfall as Lee has set his sights on Luna, he’s decided she needs to be his & his only and what Lee wants, Lee gets by any means necessary 🫣
Wow Lee is my new most HATED character!! He was awful & most definitely has a split personality disorder! James did a brilliant job of portraying him to be a complete and utter waste of space 😂 everytime it was on him, I haaaaated him more and more. The torture he put Luna through 😭
This really did make me think though! As someone that does receive ARCs and has given my address for psychical copies before, it’s kinda scary that this could actually happen!!
This was so fast paced & relentlessly brutal but it was brilliantly done! Definitely check your triggers before going into this, it’s a small bit rough in places 🤯
luna is a book reviewer, she loves spending her time reading group and gruesome books and sharing them with her ever growing followers. Lee is an obsessed misogynistic freak who wants nothing more than to assault luna and make her his . When Luna responds to a dm regarding an arc read for an upcoming book she blindly sends the author her address, little does luna know, lee is on the receiving side of that message, he has a lot for luna, but an arc read is not one of them.
This was such a fun fast paced brutal read! Lee was such an insufferable character ( which he was made to be and was done phenomenally)! I was rooting for our main character the whole time! Definitely a solid 4 star read!!
As a content creator this book feels so meta and anxiety inducing!
Lee has become obsessed with a 'severe horror' content creator, Luna. So much so, that he decides to pretend to be an author wanting to send her an ARC to get her address. Luna happily gives out her home address and eagerly awaits for her ARC to arrive, meanwhile, Lee plans the real horror he is going to enact on her.
This was a really fun and self-aware read! One for anyone in the extreme horror space to enjoy.
I loved how well this book flowed , it was easy to follow and it painted a graphic picture when reading it. it was easy to have a vivid description of what is happening. I was sucked in from the first page and could not put this book down. I had a great time reading this , it was one wild ride and I could not put this book down!
One of the best books i've read this year! This book is sick and depraved. James does not hold back on this book. The main character is a goth girl booktoker that recieves ARCs regularly. When she gives her address to the wrong person, she get's some unexpected book mail. This is a story of kidnapping and sick goth fetishes. Truely one of my worst nightmares written on paper.
Fucking demented!!! And scary because it hit close to home. I felt a kinship with Luna’s character a goth gal who runs a booktok account and reviews extreme horror/splatter punk or “carnage punk” as it’s called in the book. She also smokes weed and has sick music taste.
This book also had some weirdly funny moments in spite of the heavy subject material. Like the killer being a goth girl obsessed magatt who listens to the most shit music ever was kind of funny. Also the author making the killers alias name similar to his made this extra spooky. 👻
And thank FUCK! This is horror with political statements!!! Hence the genre splatterpunk! This book had backbone. Very META, very gorey
I mean, who would give authors their address online.... 😅
In this story we tollow Luna, she has a popular social media account where she reviews extreme and disturbing horror Books.
One day Luna receives a DM from an author offering Luna an ARC of his debut book in return for a review on Luna's Channel. In the author/Reviewer community this is a common Scenario, Luna likes the sound of the book so she passes on her postal address and looks forward to receiving the book.
Thing is, Jarvis Oliver isn't an author at all. He is a deluded, vicious psychopath who resents woman and he has been stalking Luna's content for a while.
He wants her and now he has her adaress....
This book was a great read! It was brutal and extreme and I loved every minute.
Jarvis is a real POS, I hated him in every way, which is a credit to how he was written.
There were so many things I loved about this book, the Music refer-ences, the familiarity of being in the Author/reviewer Community. The nods to other authors and books, loved that a Character from Klaus kann book was mentioned Just in passing.
Also loved the tongue in cheek twist on Certain words and thing extreme Horror and Splatter Punk became 'severe Horror' and 'carnage Punk. The authors personality really Stood out and it made me smile.
My Hands are tied is released today. I you are a fan of extreme violence you aren't going to want to miss out on this one!
Luna is a book reviewer and influencer, her fave horror subgenres being severe horror and carnage punk, and of course, she has a creepy stalker… a creepy stalker who is all too familiar with the world of carnage and horror. A frighteningly delusional guy acting out his sick, twisted fantasies and delusions. A fearsome fanatic, intent on torture and revenge.
Being part of the indie horror community and as a reviewer myself, Luna, and the world around her are very familiar and this helps to make the story all the more immersive.
A brutal tale of horror, humour, remorseless violence, debauchery and smut, all the good stuff we've come to expect from Oliver.
I really liked how it flicked back and forth from different perspectives, giving it a fast, intense, and gripping edge.
And after reading this I think I'm going to stick to digital ARCs from now on! 😉
I read this after Sacrifical Slaughter and Genital Rot (both 5-star books), so maybe my view is a little skewed?
The story was decent and the brutality was definitely in your face. But, holy shit, I hated Jaimie Ollivier with the fire of a thousand suns. Maybe it's because I've met those types before? But, James did a fantastic job with portraying that douchenozzle extremely well.
There are now TWO books that made me question my enjoyment of EH. This one and the infamous "Found Bag of Doom."
Overall, it was a nice palate cleanser after the visceral emotional reaction I had from "Swallow Me Whole." A mindless gruesome trip down the highway of toxic masculinity.
I was very kindly given this as an ARC to read by the author.
What first struck me about this book was the dedication, I won’t spoil it, but it touched me because I was affected in my youth and I knew that this book would somehow be cathartic for me - and I was so right!!
James does an amazing job of showing just how putrid and pathetic the antagonist is. Lee is written so well that I found myself twitching in genuine disgust. Books rarely get a physical reaction from me, so this was a feat!
I saw myself in Luna, and so many other women I know, and that added such a heightened response for me that just deepened my disgust and my fear.
The descriptions of violence, torture, gore and more were vivid and imaginative. There were methods of torture in this book that I’ve not seen in others and gagged at quite a few moments (again, I don’t usually react physically to books!)
Overall, this book was so well written it just flowed from the page and into my brain. There was nothing repetitive or simple, it painted a brilliant visceral and graphic picture in my mind that I’m sure will stay with me a long long time!
Luna is an influencer whose content revolves around horror books and media. She received a message from a mysterious writer, Jarvis Olivier, who wants to send her an advance reading copy of his debut novel. She happily accepted, but there will be consequences…
My Hands Are Tied shows how dangerous it can be to expose yourself online. You never know who is following you and why, even though you might feel in control. Out there are a lot of psychos who might be interested in you. Luna’s follower is Lee, a self-called alpha male, an average Andrew Tate fan who is obsessed with goth girls. I liked how the novel handled the manosphere topic. I think it is something important to discuss, and extreme horror is a perfect place for that. We can see how toxic a mentality like that is and how far a deranged individual would go. This pissed me off a lot, knowing damn well people like Lee exist under the same sun as I.
In the first pages, we meet the characters - that was kinda static to me, but later on I was glad I continued the novel IT WAS BRUTAL like wtf. It has twists and unexpacted situations that make the carnage even worse. I hated it so much because I felt the pain and sorrow of the victim. Luna and I are very similar, which made me feel more connected to her.
It is also a fun and active reading, which is important for my fried-up attention span.
It was remarkable until the end, but I won’t tell you too much about it, so I won’t spoil it.
Last but not least, I want to thank James Oliver for offering me an ARC <3
Im going to try my best to be fair but honest. This was my first book in the extreme horror/splatterpunk genre. Therefore, I have no baseline for my expectations, likes, or dislikes. Nor do I know what overall writing style is to be expected here. As an aspiring author, I do see what Mr. Oliver was trying to do this in this book. It just sadly missed the mark... badly!
The dialog was middle-schoolish. I can and have read under 200 page books in hours. This one took days and a hate-finish determination to complete. The author failed to draw me into the plot or character development. Specifically, at no point did I feel bad for the MFC or disgusting at the antagonist.
Sidenote: I dont need personal politics in fictional books. I removed one star simply because of that aspect in this book.
Is there gore? Yes Is there death? Yes Is there SA? Yes
If that is all that matters to you? You'll probably enjoy this book. If you are pro bad-ass bitch and feminism. You'll probably love this book.
My Hands Are Tied by James Oliver Narrated by Quiet 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Splatterpunk/extreme horror at its finest!! This novella is packed with entertainment, and intensity! Luna loves her horror books and has a strong online presence that helps her connect with authors and fans. Luna loves this engagement, but finds out that not everyone has her best interest in mind.
I was lucky to get to listen to the audio and the narrator did a great job!! It’s a fast read/listen and well written! This is my first book from this author and I’ll be looking to read more!!
*Check out this entertaining and intense read!!* (check triggers)
I very seldom say “what the fk did I just read” but this one absolutely hit that mark for me and I loved it LOL. Luna is an ARC reader and a social media influencer where she uses her platform to read and review books that have upcoming releases. As an ARC reader myself this one peaked my interest and it sucked me in just based on the cover alone but once I started reading, it was over at that point. I was hooked. This is my second splatterpunk type books and I am finding that I quite posstibly enjoy them a little too much. It hits all the marks of a horror story with it’s graphic descriptions. Note to self don’t ever give authors my physical address and only use my PO box because bbbbaaabbbyyy I do not have time for no stalker psycho to show up and murdalize me.
I'm going to try my best to be fair but honest. This was *not* my first book in the extreme horror/splatterpunk genre and not my first by Mr. Oliver. The writing style was exactly on point for this genre. I do see what Mr. Oliver was trying to do this in this book. It just absolutely hit the mark!
The dialog was modern and on par with EH genre. Some might think it comes across as middle-schoolish or cringey, but red-pilled alpha males absolutely think and talk like this. The book-tok girlies characters were on point too! James 100% did his research and captured the essence of these characters. I read this book in a morning, I couldn't put it down! The author drew me in with the fast moving plot and character development and friendship.
Sidenote: Lee/Jarvis is a politically disturbed FICTIONAL character. And the fictional character's politics are a huge motivator in his actions. For the accuracy and details poured into the writing of his character, I've bumped this 4 star up to a 5 star.
Is there gore? Yes Is there death? Yes Is there SA? Yes
If that is all that matters to you? You'll probably enjoy this book. If you are pro bad-ass bitch and feminism. You'll probably love this book as much I did!
My Hands are Tied by James Oliver check your triggers this one has it all. Being into extreme splatterpunk and horror is so much fun, even better when you get the chance to ARC read from some amazing indie authors. That was the case for Luna. This story really gets you second thinking and remembering stranger danger and the importance of trust. It was fun, it was gory and invoked a sense of compassion and hope for Luna. This book definitely had some new triggers and events that I haven’t yet read in anything so thank you to the amazingly talented James Oliver for opening up some new cringes for me! Please check out this book especially if you are new to this genre. My Hands Are Tied doesn’t hold back so check your triggers and enjoy the wild ride.
When James asked me if I wanted to ARC read his upcoming release, there was only one right answer, which of course is 'YES'.
When extreme and depraved is what you're looking for, James is your man, and 'My Hands are Tied' is no different.
In this read, we follow Luna, a prominent bookstagrammer who has a knack for severe horror books. When an up-and-coming author reaches out to her asking her if she's interested in reviewing his debut, she says yes. All he needs from her is her address so he can send her the book...
From there on, a series of events unfold that I'm not going to spoil, that's something for you to endure...
I want to give this book six stars James Oliver knows how to write some horrendous things but it's all in good fun great book great time if you're not reading this you're doing yourself a disservice
