A WORLD UNDONE, A FUTURE UNCERTAIN, ONE TRUTH REMAINS: SURVIVAL COMES AT A COST.
Caden awakens in the heart of desolation, buried beneath a sea of ash and rot. What remains of the land is unrecognizable, a hollow shell of its former self.
But one thing is clear: Theron, once a brother, now twisted beyond recognition, must be stopped before his new form brings the end of everything.
With the world on the brink of annihilation, Caden is thrust into a journey that could unravel what's left of their humanity. The path ahead is a dark mystery, one that holds secrets, dangers, and choices that could destroy them all.
Old friends. New alliances. Final reckoning.
For fans of Brandon Sanderson and Christopher Ruocchio (Sun Eater), this duology combines vast, layered worldbuilding with the intimacy of a tragic brotherhood—darker, bleaker, and more tragic.
Claudia J. Filusch is a German-Polish author, writing sci-fi fantasy and dark fantasy stories that explore the boundaries between worlds—whether ancient, or internal. With a background in art history, English literature and linguistics, she brings a layered, atmospheric style to fiction, weaving language and lore into richly imagined universes.
When not writing, Claudia is probably reading something dystopian, sketching story concepts in the margins of notebooks, or drinking a good cup of tea.
Her debut novel, Echo’s End, is a haunting blend of mystery, myth, and momentum—perfect for readers who like their fantasy speculative and their sci-fi soaked in shadows.
When I say the sequel topped her debut (Echo's End), I mean it in the way her prose is so lyrical and haunting that there were goosebumps the entire time. She has such a gift for writing that I found myself just re-reading sentences to fully appreciate the scene she had painted.
Now to the characters. Caden, Theron, Jira and Nova take center stage as they navigate what remains of the world as they know it. One fights to find his brother, putting aside his own fear and guilt in order to find him at any cost. One fights against the fate thrust upon him, then accepts what he has been giving—and what he can make. One desires to see the world remade, not in their image, but with hope and community. And the last hoped to carry on their family’s legacy, before finding purpose in a new life, with a new name.
I used “haunted” in the first paragraph intentionally, because thats exactly how I felt. The themes of hope, of love, of loyalty and agency are woven deeply into this story. There’s a character that connects with each of us I think.
But I’ll leave you with my favorite quote, and then urge you to pick this duology up and support an indie artist who deserves way more credit than she has:
“She thought of how silence had once been safety. And how now, it was just another kind of death.”
This story is dark, intense, and immediately gripping. Caden’s awakening in a ruined world sets a haunting tone, and the fractured bond between him and Theron adds powerful emotional weight to the unfolding danger. With vivid imagery, high stakes, and a sense of looming doom, the book pulls you into a journey where every choice feels devastatingly important.
