Obstruction is one of my favorite reads this year! It was like a breath of fresh air when I was reading some really heavy stuff, allowing me to relax and have some fun. In a way, it brought me back to my carefree days, feeling relaxed and at home. All the characters were so real that I felt like I was part of their circle. Their humor was lively, every interaction felt natural. I adored that! I guess I needed that peace...
The narrator Izzy suddenly finds herself as the lead singer of a rock band, surrounded by the most handsome guys on campus. Her friends keep teasing her about it btw, and those parts were such a joy to read lol. I love female friendship!
What I loved most about this book is how sincere and heartfelt it is. We’re so used to stories giving us extreme drama, flawless men devoted entirely to their woman, perfect women who never make mistakes etc. But Obstruction shows that people aren’t perfect, and that everyone snaps at some point.
I actually liked Simon at first. He was funny and cool, but then he started acting like a kid who had no idea what he wanted. Ethan had so many overthinking moments that could’ve seen as rude, but for some reason I found myself agreeing with him (biggest Ethan fan here 🙋♀️)
I love Oddball. He was like the only sane, positive person among a bunch of unstable people lol. I also loved Eileen. I identified with her so much that in some places I wanted to enter into the book and slap her as if she were my bestie haha..
My thoughts on Izzy are a little mixed. There were plenty of moments when I really loved her, but overall, I wished she’d been clearer in some situations. She was unresponsive in some places. Like girl, they said that sh*t and you gave that soulless answer? I also think we could’ve seen more of her inner world. She’s the narrator after all, but sometimes she was just describing what was happening around her instead of sharing how she actually felt about it. It's style choice, of course. I just wanted to know her more. And also... there are too many "grinned" in the book. The expressions could have been a little more varied.
Overall though, I adored Obstruction. Every character felt unique. They all felt so human, and that makes it so much easier to connect with them.
And the playlist !!! It was amazing! I read each chapter while looking up the lyrics, and it made the experience even more fun. Definitely going to check out the author’s other books!

Izzy is so strong, so inspiring and reading her story made me so emotional. I'm curious about what would happen next. I couldn't say goodbye to characters... The family trope was very well done, they all felt like home. What a warm book.

Few books capture the thrill and vulnerability of performing quite like Obstruction. Maggie Boudrie perfectly blends the adrenaline of being on stage with the quieter, more personal struggles of learning who you are when the lights fade.
Izzy’s character arc is one of the best I’ve read in a while. She begins unsure and timid, and by the end, she’s found not only her singing voice but her personal one too. Watching her navigate friendship, romance, and her own doubts kept me hooked.
The writing is smooth, the pacing tight, and the emotions genuine. This is the kind of book you finish and immediately want to hand to a friend with the words, You need to read this.
