Our past, present and future are interconnected and independent. Therefore, knowing and understanding our history is not optional; it is essential.
Darussalam, presents the entire history of Islam to our youth in language that appeals to them, in a simple yet lucid manner. The first four volumes in this series explore Islamic history during the period of the first “Four Rightly Guided Caliphs”. Later volumes would be devoted to the “History of Islam”, down through the ages to modern times, insha’ Allah.
Another informative book. Helped me acquire knowledge previously unknown.
The pious companion Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) was disciplined in his deen and in worldy affairs. A firm but fair ruler. He (RA) upheld a frugal and simple life, not concerned by the glory and luxury of this world even as the Caliph (where he had access to the expansive state treasury). He could be found sleeping in the mosque or when travelling, sleeping on a cloak under a tree rather than pitch a tent. During his rule, the Islamic kingdom conquered Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem and Libya. No doubt the muslims were acquiring immense riches yet the Caliph slept in the mosque. Subhanallah
Now THAT is a role model
Just in his rulings and closely entwined with the affairs of his people (especially the poor and destitute) Umar (RA) exemplifies the pinnacle of benevolent and strong leadership. Many great advancements and innovations were made under his rule.
Some minor nitpicks
- There is no (RA) or (SAW) symbol present. This is very odd
- Chapter 6 - Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA)'s personality is positioned near the end of the book. Quite odd again after the previous chapters went through his military expeditions and the actions he took. Also, it talks about his death not his personality
Chapter 7 - 'A new method to select the Calpih' also expands on Umar (RA)'s death and achievements as Caliph, which is not part of the chapter heading. Small nitpick but it did throw me off
That same chapter lists Umar (RA)'s admirable traits including taqwa, trustworthiness, dedication to Islam, wisdom, benevolence and generosity. I WANT to hear stories or examples demonstrating these characteristics. I believe the phrase is "Show, don't tell"!
Ultimately, this book serves as an introduction to the 2nd Caliph of Islam. Although the book doesn't go into too much detail, it accomplishes the purpose of providing an introductory glance to the reign of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) as Caliph.
An excellent short textbook on the History of Islam for English-speaking students, focusing on the era beyond the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs, may Allah be pleased with them all, is desired.
For this book, I wish it describes more of Umar Al-Khattab’s personality and interactions with Rasulullah (saw) and other sahabat. Other than that, I'd love how, during his caliphate, Umar played a role in conquering regions such as Jerusalem and exhibited exemplary leadership.
