Beyond Human Connection is a powerful, moving testimony to a shared journey through trauma, loss, and transformation. But above all, it is about the enduring love between one woman and her dog.
Alfie was a rescue dog who had been repeatedly abandoned and abused, yet despite this, he became my greatest teacher and dearest companion, helping me to navigate my own trauma and ultimately reach a healing path.
From the moment I met him, I knew that Alfie was my Heart Dog. I’m no “crazy” dog person, but I was blessed with an extraordinary bond; a deeply meaningful, unspoken connection that could transport me beyond this human world. This book explores how and why our relationship developed and examines questions to which I had long sought answers.
Can you have a deeper connection with an animal than with a person? How can you continue a relationship after death? What is disenfranchised grief? How can we best support one another through loss and trauma? What are the effects of childhood emotional and psychological trauma, and what role can animals play in our healing? And what has mindfulness got to do with any of this?
Our story began when an abandoned, abused dog met a traumatised, grieving human. Against the odds, we formed an unbreakable partnership and rewrote our destinies. Because of a traumatic childhood and undiagnosed neurodivergence, I had always struggled to find safety in human connection. It was my beloved Shepherd who created the conditions that allowed me to access the healing power of nature and my own inner resources, enabling me to survive the devastation that was to come.
This is also the story of what happened after Alfie died. While bereft and heartbroken, my grief was cruelly disenfranchised. At the same time, unresolved trauma resurfaced with a vengeance, culminating in a terrifying crisis. Only by returning to my dog’s wisdom was I able to survive and, with our continuing bond sustaining me, slowly find my way forward.
This book is my tribute to Alfie and to all the animals who grace our lives with their presence. It is also a call for greater understanding, compassion for grief in all its forms and a deeper acceptance of our differences. As a mindfulness teacher, I remain in awe of the way Alfie embodied compassion and awareness, exemplifying the art of Being and planting seeds I could not ignore. I cherish every aspect of our ongoing connection and the continued healing it brings.
Love, Grief, Healing, and Freedom are the shared foundations of this journey. So smile over the memories, hold your loved ones closer through the pain, and let your spirit shine and soar with ours.
