In this, the third and final of "The Further Adventures of Eddie Dickens", our saucer-eyed hero Eddie Dickens finds himself embroiled in an attempt to foil a plot to steal an oil painting of Mad Uncle Jack, mistakenly commissioned by the War Office (who thought he was the other Major Dickens). Add to this the explosive mix of Even Madder Aunt Maud and Annabelle, the baby pet crocodile she now leads around on a silver chain; Dr Samuel Moot, besotted by Maud since a young man, having once shot Mad Uncle Jack (twice) in a duel; Gherkin, a professional dwarf; Eddie's Uncle Alfie and a surfeit of heather; and all the usual suspects (including Malcolm, of course)...and you're in for another slice of the ridiculous served up in the way that only Ardagh can.
Over six-and-a-half feet tall, with a bushy beard, Philip Ardagh is not only very big but also very hairy. He is the author of the Eddie Dickens Trilogy and when not writing silly books, Mr. Ardagh is quite serious and frowns a great deal. He lives in a seaside town somewhere in England with his wife and their son, Fred.
Once again, much as I love Ardagh's style and asides, they became a bit too much in this one, making the overall story--and even the jokes--take longer than necessary at times.
That being said, you can't argue with the playfulness and fun of these books. Even if he becomes overindulgent at times, it still makes for a fun read. If and when more of Eddie's adventures come to light, I will definitely be there to read them.
And so concludes my nostalgic trip back to my childhood with these delightfully daft stories. Ardagh is clearly insane, with possibly the most disregard for the 4th wall save for Deadpool and a love for his beard that challenges EMAM's love for Malcolm, or is it Sally?
The Eddie Dickens series is a delight that will amuse adults as much as its intended audience. My only problem with it is that there are no further books, might I humbly suggest the author continue the extraordinary exploits of Eddie Dickens, I'd buy them!
This is another humorous adventure in the Eddie Dickens saga. I loved the way that Ardagh brought in characters from his other books. His use of humor and language was just as good as the other books, and I had a hard time getting some of the humorous images out of my head! The only bad thing about this book is that it's the last in the "Further Adventures" trilogy. I hope that Ardagh writes some more of these books soon! This series is recommended for people who like silly stories (such as the Series of Unfortunate events), and should have good appeal for kids in upper elementary school through middle school, particularly boys.
Okay.. this book is so stuffed with so many events! At some point I wasn't able to keep track of all those characters, I had to go back some lines or sometimes pages to know who is who. All in all Dickens will always be of my favorite books... I would like to add that my favorite of the Further Adventures is probably Horrendous Habbits. It was a fun adventure -reading all six Eddie Dickens adventures. Time to move on.. to read more and more.. and more.
