I write literary retellings of ancient myths, returning to their older, darker roots — stories shaped by tragic love, fate, and consequence rather than happy endings.

My work is collected under Myths Reborn, a series that revisits figures and stories from classical mythology with care, restraint, and historical atmosphere. I’m especially drawn to the myths that predate their modern counterparts, and to characters mythology often misunderstood, silenced, or remembered only for their endings.

These are quiet stories, written for readers who enjoy mythology, tragic romance, and reflective storytelling — the kind of books that linger rather than rush.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading myth, history, or literary fiction, and thinking about why ancient stories continue to survive.

I had the pleasure of ARC reading Sacrifice of Iphigenia earlier in August and I absolutely loved this book. HM Roberts does an incredible job with her mythology reimaginings, this book is number 5 in her Myths Reborn series. Her writing is so beautiful and she manages to make me as a reader feel such a range of emotions with each story she brings to the page. This one is no different. Absolutely devastating, this book brings to light the often tragic realities women faced as a consequence of men’s decisions in their quest for power and the favor of the Gods.

If you love Greek mythology, this is a must read. HM Roberts does an excellent job preserving the foundation of the myth as we most commonly know it while bringing a fresh take in both the details and the formatting. I highly recommend!

Trigger Warnings: Grief & Loss, War and Scenes of Violence, Deception & Manipulation, Child Sacrifice, Death

H.M. Roberts’ Sacrifice of Iphigenia is a breathtakingly tragic retelling of one of Greek mythology’s most heart-wrenching tales. From the very first page, Roberts immerses the reader in a world steeped in sorrow, fate, and the inescapable weight of legacy.
The story unfolds not just as the tragedy of Iphigenia, but as a generational lament. Roberts crafts a narrative that is as much about the legacy of sorrow as it is about the titular sacrifice. The story begins with the quiet devastation of Clytemnestra, who has already endured the loss of her first-born son and her first husband. These early tragedies are not mere backstory, they cast long shadow over the family, setting the stage for the devastating events to come.
The death of her second husband’s illegitimate daughter adds another layer of anguish, a cruel reminder of the gods’ indifference and the fragility of mortal lives. Each loss is not merely a plot point, but a wound that shapes the characters’ motivations and deepens the emotional resonance of the story.
At the heart of the novel is Iphigenia herself, noble, innocent, and ultimately doomed. Roberts portrays her not as a passive victim, but as a young woman caught in the merciless gears of fate and politics. Her sacrifice demanded by the gods to appease Artemis and allow the Greek fleet to sail to Troy, is rendered with such poignancy that it lingers long after the final page.
Roberts' prose is lyrical yet grounded, capturing both the grandeur of myth and the intimate pain of personal loss. The novel is a meditation on duty, honor, and the devastating cost of war not just in lives lost, but in the emotional wreckage left behind.
Sacrifice of Iphigenia is not just a retelling; it is a requiem. A tale of tragedy from the very beginning, it crescendos into a final, unforgettable act of sorrow. H.M. Roberts has given voice to the silenced and dignity to the doomed. This is a novel that mourns, remembers, and reveres.

I loved everything about this book, the descriptions, dialogue, etc. Had to read this twice because it was so good.
The characters are much more 3-dimensional compared to previous retellings I've seen, and the POV-switch between characters are amazingly seamless. There is so much unspoken empathy between the characters, and each character is a rebellion story of their own. I can't say too much without spoiling, but the character switching really gives insight into the history that repeats itself, and the minds of those who rebel in their own ways to break the cycle. The characters are strong within their capacities and fully encapsulate the idea of being gracefully resilient.
10/10 would recommend, can't wait to travel to a place where I can buy a physical copy of this one 😭The design on the pages are very pretty!

Sacrifice Of Iphigenia is a beautifully written Greek myth retelling, it was a Greek myth I hadn't seen before so I was intrigued. It's a story of love, duty and ultimately betrayal and tragedy. Its a tale as old as time, women pay the price for mens wars, Iphigenia is just a pawn in a man's world! Nothing much changes in the world, women and their rights are still sacrificed for mens ideals today.

The bravery Iphigenia shows as she meets her fate, she doesn't make things easy for her father, she refuses to back down, she is such a wonderful character, a true feminist before the word even existed. I loved that she kind of found her happy ending at the end even though its not as she imagined.

The Sacrifice of Iphigenia by Hayley Mitchell honestly got to me more than I expected. Even if you already know the myth, it still feels really personal and emotional. Iphigenia comes across as a real person, not just a tragic figure, and that made the whole story hit harder. The family tension is rough in a very believable way, and you can’t help but feel frustrated and sad for her. I kept saying “just one more chapter” because I needed to see how it would play out. It’s heavy at times, but not in a way that makes you want to stop reading. If you like myth retellings that focus on the people and the emotions instead of just the legend, I’d definitely tell you to pick this one up.

This was a beautiful tragedy. As most Greek tragedies are. Any woman could resonate with the situations that all of the characters have had to one extent or another. I know I did. The message behind this story is one that is still relevant to this day.
Forbidden love, pressures from family, sacrifice, greed, and loss.
This is a story that will resonate with me for a long time and is now one of my favorites.
The way the author wove in past experiences with alternating perspectives into present day was flawless.
