I never expected to become a single mom. Back in my Colorado hometown, all I have time for is work and raising my grieving nephew.
I don’t have time for a man.
Especially a tall, dark, and broody one.
Allie I’ve swapped city life for small town. Designer suits for a housekeeping uniform. And don’t get me started on my lack of sleep. But I’d do it all again in a heartbeat to take care of my nephew.
Now my life revolves around running hotel housekeeping at the Langston Windward and taking care of my kiddo.
Oh, it also involves trying to avoid our cold, scowling, ex-military head of security. Everywhere I turn, I see Caden Castro and his muscled body and inky-black eyes.
And every time I see him, he’s watching me.
Caden As head of security for Langston Hotels, my job is to fly in, upgrade security, then fly out. Since I left the military, I keep my life simple and avoid distractions.
Works helps me escape the memories and guilt that never go away.
Except, since I came to Windward, all I can think about is Allie Ford.
It isn’t just her long legs and lean body, it’s her fierce attitude and spirit. But she’s a hard-working single mom, and I’m a man with nothing to offer.
Then a group of dangerous guests into extreme sports arrive. They have trouble written all over them, and when Allie gets sucked into that trouble, it changes everything.
Whatever line I have to cross, I’ll do it to keep her safe.

Poor Allie needed a freaking break. This woman took most of the brunt in this book. She was rejected at least four times by Caden. Got abducted and physically assaulted by the bad guy twice. 😐
I don't know how she was able to go through all of that and not lose her freaking mind. But then again, she has a nephew, and she really can't break down because she's all he has.
Anyway, it didn't work for me. Some things just didn't make sense. This was too insta-something, which is normally my jam, but these two had no chemistry, so it was hard to enjoy that aspect. I'll never understand how they fell in love. Also, Caden's hot and cold, push and pull antics got exhausting after the fifth time??? I really can't deal with MMCs like this.
Book info: - Workplace romance - Single mom (guardian) - Suspense - Kidnapping - Physical assault - Drug dealings - Loss of loved one (past) - PTSD - Insta-something - No cheating, OM/OW, separation - No V (both said it's been quite awhile) - HFN (in a relationship and living together) - Bonus ep (8 mos later, found out they're pregnant and are planning to get married)
Caden and Allie are two opposites that clash. Caden is reserved, hesitant to try coming out of his shell, and Allie is a single mom who excels at her work. Even if she is tired, she is assertive and I liked that about her. She wants him, but she wouldn't beg, actually she scolded him for being a wuss. Caden was cold and hard, his walls crumbling whenever Allie was hurt, or he wanted her. I liked seeing him work for her, but I do think he should've apologised a little bit more. I liked book 1 more, but I'm DESPERATELY waiting for book 3. The side characters are SO funny. The girl group is so cute. I can't wait to read more of this series.
Allie, she left her hometown for better things. But after losing her brother and sister in law in a tragic accident. She became the guardian to her five year old nephew. She left city life, returned back to her hometown and has been doing her at most best to take care of her grieving nephew. Oliver is her focus and she has zero time for the head of security, Caden Castro.
Caden, returning home from the military was not easy for him. He found it extremely hard to acclimate back into civilian lifestyle, always focused and on guard with no switch off. It lead to him distancing himself from his mother and sisters. As head of security for Langston Hotels, he doesn't stay in one place for too long. But a feisty housekeeper and her nephew have him second guessing his lifestyle.
This is book to in the Langston Hotels series and it was perfect. The push and pull between the leads was fantastic. Caden's broodiness, protective nature and possessiveness was top notch. The chemistry, spice was hot. And the suspense had me on edge!
I've recently discovered a new author, and I cannot get enough of her books fast enough.
Allie has had plenty of life changes recently. Gaining guardianship of her nephew, moving from New York to Windward, CO, a small town. Keeping the two alive and on schedule is all she has time for. Raising her nephew, Ollie, the best she can and working leaves very little time for fun.
Caden, head of security for Langston Hotels, is a former military and by the book. While he admires that his boss and friend has found love, he feels he does not deserve to be loved. Allie is slowly getting under his skin, and he needs to listen to his heart.
As the two work together to solve a mystery, hearts begin to thaw, and a trust begins to build. Will the danger push Caden to admit his feelings? Plenty of action, fast paced, and the banter is quite entertaining. I am ready for the next book!
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
This is the romance we knew was coming at the end of the first book in the Langston Hotels series, Night and Day. And the title for this one is an even bigger clue to the characters and their story than it was in that first book.
Both Allie Ford and Caden Castro are in the midst of lives that have been irrevocably divided into “Before” and “After”. They’ve also dealt with the abrupt changes in their lives in some of the same ways – even though the exact nature of those changes has been quite different.
Allie’s before and after are all tied up in Ollie. Before her brother Sean and his wife were murdered, Allie was a young single woman ‘living the dream’ in New York City. Whether or not it was really HER dream was a question she never really got to answer, because in the aftermath of the murder, Allie adopted her brother’s little boy, Ollie, returned home to Windward, began a new job as the head of housekeeping for the Windward Resort, and shifted her focus to Ollie.
Allie has plenty of friends in Windward, but Sean was the only person in her life she could really rely on, and now he’s gone. She feels like she needs to do everything to take care of Ollie all on her own – and she’s drowning.
Caden’s before and after are the brackets to his military service. He feels like the man who came back from the sandbox isn’t the same man who left. And he’s right – but he’s also wrong. No one emerges from war unscathed – whether physically wounded or not – but just because he struggled to get all the way back to ‘civvy street’ that doesn’t mean he’s not worthy of reconnecting with his family, putting down roots, and most of all, falling in love. Even though his best buddy gave his life to make sure Caden had that chance – or perhaps especially because of that sacrifice. Caden is constantly on – and painfully spiked by – the fence on THAT particular question.
Caden and Allie get along like kerosene and matches. They always draw sparks from each other, even if neither of them is willing to admit it. There’s more than a bit of a #grumpysunshine vibe to their relationship and it really works – both for them and for the reader.
Even though Allie sees the glass as half full, while Caden always sees it as half empty (and draining out the bottom), they both see that the group of young, wealthy ‘Extreme Sports Guys’ that have checked into the resort are nothing but trouble.
The only question in both of their minds is exactly what kind of trouble.
Allie can’t resist poking her nose – and her housekeeping master key – into places, or at least for purposes – where it doesn’t belong. Leading the ESGs to target Allie and Ollie to keep their extremely lucrative and villainous thing going.
Which puts the gang right into Caden’s crosshairs. Allie is his to protect – even if he does think she’s much too good for him and deserves better. Allie thinks Caden is exactly what she wants and needs – and Ollie’s sure he’ll make good ‘dad’ material too – if they all just get the chance.
Escape Rating A-: This was definitely one of those right book/right time situations. Also, this hit the same sweet spot for me – at least storywise – as a particular branch of one of the fanfic tropes I regularly read, where the two adult protagonists make a family with the child who initially belongs to only one of the pair.
I really like those stories’ found family, #kidfic vibe, and Before and After hit that exact same spot, so I fell right into it and read it in a single evening.
Part of what made this book so easy to fall into was the world in which it was set. The setup for this series, the Windward Resort, is just a terrific setting with a great group of family-of-choice friends and colleagues. It’s a very nice place to visit and I wouldn’t mind staying there again. Multiple times.
It’s also a place that works, works well, does the best by its staff as well as its guests, and is just generally a great setting. It feels homey all around, and that’s not a vibe that this author does often – but it’s been done well so far in this series.
At the same time, as homey as the Windward is, there’s still plenty of action and adventure to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. So I finished this story as a very happy (reading) camper, completely satisfied with the happy ever after all the way around.
I’m also happy that this series shows no sign of ending, even though the next book looks like it won’t be coming until (OMG!) next year. This one ends with not one but two teases for the next book – or two. And I can’t wait to read both whenever they appear!
You might think that Caden is playing games at first. Rest assured, he isn’t. He truly doesn’t believe that he deserves what his friend has. What he wants. Who he wants. So he tries so hard to stay away, but his heart says nope to that. It’s a good thing he learns to listen to that heart, too, since Allie and Ollie become his whole world while giving him a life he absolutely wants in return.
Allie is tough and resourceful and stubborn. She’s raising Ollie the best way she knows how, she’s making sure he thrives, and she enjoys needling the guy who she’s pretty sure can’t stand her. Even when Caden lets his fears get the better of him, Allie doesn’t back away or back down. She proves that she’s exactly who Caden needs, and he’s exactly the man meant to be a part of her life.
Even with mystery and danger swirling, these two learn to lean on each other, trust each other, and build a beautiful future together. I barely finished their road to love and I already can’t wait for the couple I think might come next.
Thank you for giving me the chance to receive an ARC of this book
Single Guardian: Allie and Ollie are just adorable. As aunt and nephew who are sharing the loss of a significant loved one, these two are so emotional to read. Their relationship is evolving to parent/child, and it is shown beautifully on the pages.
Protective Hero: I appreciate how the author handles this trope with sensitivity. While the male lead is overprotective, it doesn't excuse irrational behaviour. He's protective, supportive, understanding, and just a cinnamon roll overall.
Subplot: While the incorporation of a sinister subplot could potentially detract from the overall narrative, in this instance, it serves as a carefully crafted enhancement to the main storyline. Instead of overshadowing the core plot, the subplot adds layers of complexity and suspense, providing a captivating sense of drama without overwhelming or consuming the entire narrative.
Connection MMC and the nephew: I wish we could have seen more bonding between Ollie and Caden. While there were tender moments between them, it lacked the depth one would expect from a potential parent and child.
Perfect romantic suspense. I read this in one sitting. I love how Anna Hackett writes romance without a bunch of fluff. These main characters have tragic pasts - Allie is a single mom to her nephew whose parents were violently killed. Caden is a former special forces soldier who lost people. Top tier broody MMC. There’s a lot of tension between the two before they finally give in. Excellent spice. I loved the threat in this book, it was super realistic and the pacing up until the end sequence was very well done. I’m really enjoying the setting for the Langston Hotels series and we got to meet so many more characters in this one! Can’t wait for the next.
A growly hero, sizzling chemistry, and all the feels. Caden was the best kind of growly, and his spark with Allie was absolute fire. Allie and Ollie are exactly what he needs—even if it took him a while to see it.
Allie’s resilience and endless love as she tries to be the best for Ollie make her unforgettable. Before and After is emotional, swoony, and full of heart—a perfect mix of passion, healing, and second chances.
This was a good romantic suspense! As always I had fun with the author‘s writing and while I didn’t love the tropes in this, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters dynamics. 3⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Anna Hackett has a way of writing grumpy protective heros that always has me swooning for them!
I'm loving the small town vibes of this series and really enjoyed the single mom/guardian trope in this one. I liked seeing Allie with Ollie and how they are both growing together. Adding Caden to the mix just made the perfect trio!
I loved that we had some carryover from book one, like Ro and Tessa getting caught and Piper and Everett's tension. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Allie's new life is a far cry from her New York life. She's now guardian to her grieving nephew, Ollie, and working at Langston as the head of housekeeping. She doesn't have the time, or inclination, for a relationship, but somehow one might be happening. If Caden can ever get out of his own head and realize what they could have together.
Since Caden left the Army, he's not one to put down roots. He still suffers survivor's guilt, and can't even be around his own family without feeling disconnected. He knows his time at Langston Winward is about done, but he's having trouble actually leaving. Why? There's this beautiful woman and her nephew he can't help but be drawn to. And when it looks like he might lose her for real, he'll need to decide if he can continue living with the weight of guilt and be without Allie and Ollie in his life.
I thought Ro and Tessa (Night and Day) were awesome, and they are, but Allie and Caden have an edge over them. The edge is Allie's sweet nephew, Ollie. Caden with Ollie made my heart (and Allie's) melt, softened some of his edges, and had me smiling, even as I hurt for him and Allie as they missed her brother and Ollie's mom so much. Caden was perfectly nicknamed Broody, but behind that broody, was a guy just waiting for someone(s) to come along and help him realize he deserved the love and happiness he saw his friend Ro find with Tessa. The suspense and mystery blends perfectly with Allie and Caden's push and pull relationship, the chemistry is sizzling, and when they finally get on the same page, I was cheering them on. The Langston series is shaping up to be just as amazing as Anna's other romantic suspense series - with alpha protective men and the women who bring them to their knees. I can't wait for the next couple at Langston to fall in love now.

Before and After is the second installment in Anna Hackett’s Langston Hotels series. I was looking forward to this book, especially after Night and Day hinted at an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Unfortunately, Before and After didn’t deliver on that promise and left me disappointed.
We met Caden and Allie in book one, where their behind-the-scenes tension offered a compelling setup for their story. In this installment, we learn more about their backgrounds: Allie is a housekeeper at the hotel and guardian to her five-year-old nephew, Ollie, following the death of her brother and sister-in-law. Caden is the head of security for Langston Hotels, planning to move on once the Windward location is fully secured. Despite their differences, the two are drawn to each other and quickly act on their attraction. Meanwhile, a suspicious group of guests arrives, prompting Allie to investigate—despite her lack of experience—while Caden, already monitoring the same group, steps in to protect her.
While book one teased an enemies-to-lovers arc, this story bypasses that tension entirely. There’s no real conflict between the leads; from the outset, Caden and Allie are physically drawn to each other, and the chemistry feels more like instant gratification than slow-burn development. Disappointingly, Allie’s behavior mirrors that of Tessa—the FMC from book one—by repeatedly throwing herself at Caden, despite his clear reluctance to pursue a relationship. I had hoped Allie would emerge as a stronger, more self-respecting character, but instead she came across as desperate for attention and affection. The repeated cycle of pursuit and rejection was exhausting, and her late realization that she was “falling” for Caden felt inconsistent with her earlier actions. Was it all just lust?
Allie’s decision to investigate the shady guests felt implausible. As a housekeeper with no training or authority, her involvement stretched credibility and placed her in situations she couldn’t navigate without help. Her persistence came across less as bravery and more as a narrative device to keep her in Caden’s orbit. Her insistence on calling him “Broody”—even after he told her he had a name—wasn’t charming; it felt disrespectful and grating.
The character development was thin. Caden’s military past is mentioned but never explored in depth, and his family—his mother and two sisters—barely register in the story. Similarly, Allie’s previous life in New York is glossed over, with little insight into her career or personal relationships. These details felt like afterthoughts, added to give the illusion of depth without truly enriching the narrative. Their relationship followed a predictable pattern: chance encounters, workplace flirtation, and one underwhelming intimate scene. There was no emotional build-up or meaningful connection that I could see.
Caden, while aloof and somewhat bland, was passable as a character. But Allie’s portrayal was more problematic. Beyond her relentless pursuit of Caden, she also had the habit of oversharing intimate details with her friends—a recurring theme I’ve noticed in recent romance novels. Surely when women get together, they have more to discuss than men and children? Allie’s lack of nuance made it difficult to root for her, and I found myself indifferent to her happily-ever-after with Caden. It’s frustrating to see female characters reduced to outdated tropes in a genre that has so much potential for growth and empowerment.
I honestly expected more from an author of Anna Hackett’s caliber. This book felt uninspired, as if the author struggled to generate fresh ideas or had no time to fully develop the characters and relationships that once made her stories so engaging. I’ve enjoyed many of her earlier works, which offered hours of entertainment, but this one unfortunately fell short.
Anna Hackett’s writing style remains strong, and her storytelling instincts are solid. However, her recent FMCs seem increasingly formulaic, relying on the same traits and romantic patterns. Personally, I find it disheartening to read about women who continue to pursue men despite repeated rejection—it’s a dynamic that feels dated and demeaning. At this point, I’m unsure whether I’ll continue with the series. But if you’re not bothered by an FMC driven by lust, the rest of the story may still appeal.
Series: Langston Hotels #2 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Allie never expected to become a single mom or to return to her hometown in Colorado, but here she is. Her life now revolves around running housekeeping duties at the Langston Windward and taking care of her grieving five year old nephew. She doesn’t have time for the grumpy head of security and his good looks. But when a group of dangerous guests arrive, they find themselves struggling to keep their hands off each other while working to gather evidence against them.
After meeting Allie and Caden in the previous book, I was very interested in getting to know more about them and see how they fall in love. Allie is a hardworking and compassionate woman who dropped everything to take care of her nephew. She is a great aunt who doesn’t force Ollie to do things he isn’t read for, like hold hands. While I don’t usually love children in stories, Ollie was a good side character and I enjoyed the scenes with him. My only complaint about Allie was that she was so focused on Ollie’s grief, we never see her really address her own grief over the death of her brother.
Caden is a veteran and head of security for all Langston hotels. We quickly realize that Caden may have left the military behind but it still haunts him. He struggles with his own grief over his teammates and has survivor's guilt. I really liked Caden, even if he was so determined to keep his distance because he doesn’t think he deserves love.
Caden and Allie’s relationship was intense, but also had a lot of sweet moments. They fell hard for each other while dealing with a group of troublemakers at the hotel. The tension of dealing with this group made their feelings intense and the makeout sessions steamy. Also while this book dealt with heavy topics, I don’t think it overshadowed the love between these two, which is always good.
Overall, this was another great couple for this series. I am really enjoying the Langston Windward characters. I look forward to finding out who will fall in love next.
TW: sibling and their spouse recently murdered; grief; kidnapping; mentions of death and injuries to team members during missions for the military; on page spiking of a drink; on page drug overdose; physical abuse

Before and After is a gripping romantic suspense novel that blends tension, attraction, and the challenges of personal growth. The story follows Allie Ford, a single mother who has uprooted her life from the city to care for her grieving nephew in a small Colorado town. Allie’s world revolves around the daily grind of managing the Langston Windward Hotel and caring for her nephew, leaving little room for anything else—especially romance.
However, things take a turn when Caden Castro, the brooding ex-military head of security at the hotel, enters her life. Caden has a tortured past and has kept himself distant from any distractions, but Allie’s fierce spirit and determination make her impossible to ignore. Despite the obvious chemistry between them, both have baggage that keeps them from embracing what could be an undeniable connection.
The novel’s strength lies in its well-developed characters. Allie is a relatable and strong-willed woman who juggles the weight of motherhood with the pressures of her job. Caden, on the other hand, is a brooding hero with his own set of struggles, and his development as a character provides depth to the story.
As the plot unfolds, the book takes an exciting turn with the arrival of a group of troublemaking guests, throwing Allie and Caden into a dangerous situation. This external conflict heightens the emotional stakes and forces both characters to confront their fears and pasts.
Hackett skillfully blends romance with suspense, keeping readers hooked from the start. The chemistry between Allie and Caden is palpable, and their evolving relationship is both tender and thrilling. The tension is heightened by the hotel setting, which acts as both a romantic and perilous backdrop for the drama.
Ultimately, Before and After is a fast-paced, heart-pounding read that mixes romance, suspense, and personal growth. It’s a compelling choice for readers who enjoy a strong, independent female protagonist, a tortured hero, and plenty of action to keep things exciting.
Ladies and gentlemen it’s time to introduce you to the one and only Allie Ford & Caden Castro! 🤭💗✨
After meeting them in book one I was so excited for their story to come out and now that it’s here I feel like shouting from the mountain how much I love them! 🥹😭✨
I love this book so much, it’s truly one of my favourite books from Anna but then again I feel that way about every book Anna has released! 💗✨
One thing I have to say is that Caden was such an incredible MMC, I love it when a broken MMC is written correctly and that’s what we saw with him. We saw a man that yearned for her but he thought he couldn’t have her because he was too damaged. We got a man that was undeniably inlove with an incredible women but didn’t know how to handle loving her if it meant he could possibly lose her and we saw him come to stand firm in his love of not only her but also her nephew. He was written in a way that makes you think, there is no way that there will ever be anyone else for this man! He was truly PERFECT. 🤭🥺✨
Then of course we have Miss Allie Ford, and let me just say Allie can get it, I love her, she was such a kind and caring person, she was an incredible mother to her nephew and she was a FMC that I will remember! Allie had suffered a loss that broke her and that made her pull away from the people closer to her by never letting them help her share the burden of anything because she knew how easily you can lose someone you love. Watching her go through the motions of falling inlove with Caden was everything, these two just matched each other, there’s no other way to describe than them finding their soulmates! 🤭😭🥹✨
Anna has truly done it again by delivering another amazing read and I cannot wait to see what she has instore for us! 🤭✨
The connection- book 1: Ro and Tessa- Ro owns Langston Hotels. Tessa manages the Windward location.
Book 2- Caden and Allie- Caden is head of security for Langston Hotels, and he came to Windward with his friend, Ro. His job is to up-fit all the hotels with the best security features. Allie is the housekeeping supervisor at the Windward location, and also Tessa’s best friend.
Allie moved from NY life to the small town of Windward. Tragedy struck, and now Allie has custody of her 5 year old nephew, Ollie. Tessa had given her a job and now after several months, Allie and Ollie are doing the best they can. With so much on her plate, Allie did not expect or have time for a relationship. Enter Cayden, He came to town, quiet, broody, mysterious, and…gorgeous. Allie doesn’t know what it is about this man but she is drawn to him.
Caden puts everything into work and takes his job very seriously. He’s never entertained a relationship but every time Allie interacts with him or walks by, he can’t help but to watch her. He’s intrigued by the gorgeous woman.
Several employees take note of a group of guys that have checked in to the hotel, all noting they are up to something. Then when issues start to happen, Caden and Allie start to work together, looking into these guys. But the problems continue And now involve them. Caden finds himself very protective of Allie and will do anything to keep her safe.
Another great book in the series. Both books are action packed, entertaining, fast paced, mysterious, and full of fun banter amongst the characters. Look forward to more of their stories. Thank you #TheAuthorAgency
You know the couple are going to be spectacular when the FMC continually calls the MMC "Broody".
Allie had the fast paced, high powered executive lifestyle in NYC and she gave it up in a heartbeat when her brother and his wife were killed, leaving the baby orphaned. She may now clean rooms for a living at the hotel managed by one of her besties but she doesn't regret a thing about her new life (except maybe the lack of sleep!)
Caden takes his job as Head of Security very seriously. He's lost team-mates when he was deployed and he'll do everything he can to protect those he loves. The head of housekeeping gets under his skin and makes him think that staying in one place may not be the worst thing in the world. He even likes spending time with her adorable nephew and he never thought of himself as a kid-friendly guy.
Caden comes over as this big bad, tough, grumpy guy but the man is marshmallow inside! He never belittles Allie as "just a housekeeper". He values her input and believes her when she gets a hinky feeling about some guests. He does get a bit...stalkery when he leaves her gifts but thankfully he's doing it from a place of kindness and not ickyness! Ollie is a completely adorable child and he's soon got every adult wrapped around his little fingers.
Allis is so busy taking care of Ollie and ensuring he is safe and happy that she never really takes time to grieve herself and just keeps bottling up the grief, to her detriment. Caden also struggles with grief/PTSD over the loss of his team and has survivors guilt, and goes so far to cut off his loving family because he doesn't know how to be around them without feeling guilty.
The chemistry is intense between these two and before they even get near a bed they are throwing up flames everywhere they go!
I cannot wait to see a certain COO and her paramour in action! Annnnnd there's even a little hint of some second chance love for a Tessa's beloved auntie!
Before and After Langston Hotels book 2 Release date: 14th August 2025
My rating: 3.75⭐️ Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️
Tropes: Romantic suspense Contemporary romance Single Mum Ex-military hero Workplace romance Protective hero Grumpy x sunshine
Oh this book! 😭 this had me hooked from start to finish, I read it in one sitting over 2 hours.
This book follows Caden and Allie. Allie is a single mum to her nephew Ollie following the death of Allie’s brother.
Caden and Allie’s romance was adorable. Caden was really closed off at the beginning of the book and Allie broke down all of his walls and made him begin to feel worthy of love again. Allie struggled to see herself as anything other than a parent and was always putting Ollie’s needs above her own. Her character was so selfless.
Ollie 😭! Ollie’s story was a heartbreaking one, losing both of his parents at a young age. Reading about how Ollie accepted Caden into the family despite still struggling with the loss of his immediate one was very inspiring, especially knowing how Caden didn’t have much contact with his own family since returning from the Military.
I love romantic suspense books so I really enjoyed the storyline. Anna had me HATING on some characters (literally, some were horrible) and had me rooting for others.
Overall, this book was so good! It had me hooked throughout and I will definitely be picking up more of Anna’s work. Especially if any other books of hers have a grumpy MMC like Caden 🥲
Allie and Caden are up and these two SPARK off one another. She thinks he's grim and broody and he thinks he's too damaged to slide into her and her nephew's life. Which is all sorts of wrong and Allie is determined to show Caden just that.
To be fair, it takes a while before Allie will even admit that she maybe sort of likes Caden's intensity. He's got that brooding thing down and he's dedicated to keeping those around him safe (which is definitely not a bad thing) and he drives her a little crazy. But he also listens. He surprises her with her favorite chocolate and doesn't mind spending time with her nephew. When all that focus swings to her it's overwhelming in the best way.
As for Caden, he has some issues he needs to deal with. He might like everything about Allie, but he tries to keep his distance to keep himself from falling for her. Which has a ZERO PERCENT SUCCESS RATE since he falls and falls hard. Plus, he kinda adores her solemn, grieving nephew which works nicely because those two are a package deal.
A group of unsavory individuals, a couple of steamy kisses, a little danger, Halloween costumes, a man who knows a good woman when he meets her (even if he fights it), and a lady who absolutely did not expect to fall for the broody security expert who lights her up. *thumbs up*
Sweet lady + Broody man = perfect! Allie went from a carefree New York working chick to an auntie/mom to her little nephew Ollie. When her beloved brother Sean and his wife are killed, Allie rushes home to Windward to care for 5-year-old Ollie. Life is way different, but Allie is happy with this sweet little boy in her idyllic resort hometown. Needing a job fast, Allie’s friend Tessa hooked her up with the head of housekeeping position at the Windward Resort, now Langston Windward. Although it’s not as prestigious as her job in New York, it’s good, less stressful, has great people, and beautiful surroundings. And a new perk recently popped up. That would be watching the sexy, muscles for miles, moody…Caden ‘Broody” Castro, the head of security for Langston Hotels. They butt heads because the attraction is there for both, but Caden thinks he’s unlovable. When a group of young, good-looking, extreme sports guys book into the resort, trouble soon follows. When Allie is drawn into the middle, Caden goes into protection mode. I LOVE the small resort community. Everyone knows each other and is helpful when needed. The resort sounds so beautiful, I want to be there. I want to walk among these people. I see several ‘love matches’ coming in future stories, and I can’t wait to be back in this world. Linda
Anna Hackett is a one click queen author for me so I was excited for this one - book 2 in her Langston Hotels series (but easily read as a stand alone. It was fun though to get some scenes with Ro & Tessa from Book 1.
Before and After is a fast-paced, easily readable romantic suspense that hooked me from the start. I read it in one sitting! I loved getting swept up in Caden and Allie’s story—with Ollie stealing the spotlight every chance he got!
The balance between romance and suspense is spot on. There’s just enough action to keep the pages flying, while the romance brings all the swoony, heart-tugging moments. Anna's characters always feel real and relatable, and so the chemistry between Caden and Allie is absolutely on par.
I especially adored the grumpy/sunshine dynamic. Caden is the perfect broody, guarded hero, and it’s so satisfying to watch him slowly (and begrudgingly) give in to Allie’s warmth and determination. Their relationship unfolds in a way that feels both fun and believable, and it had me smiling more than once. I absolutely loved that she nicknames him "Broody". There spicy scenes were perfect and Caden just has me blushing.
If you enjoy a romance that blends tension, action, and heartfelt moments, this one is a definitely for you.
Thank you to Anna & The Author Agency for the ARC of this book!
Caden Castro is the head of security for Langston Hotels. He’s currently working in Windward, CO, as a small group of the Langston executives turn a former locally-run hotel into a luxurious Langston Hotel. They are upgrading the decor, the spa, the rooms, and the security in the hotel to make it fit with the Langston brand. Allie Ford used to be a marketing executive in NYC, but when her brother and sister-in-law were murdered, she became the guardian for Ollie, her 5-year-old nephew. She’s raising him in CO, where she works as the head of Housekeeping at the hotel. Unfortunately, some entitled 20-something millennials are using the hotel in Windward for something nefarious, but Allie can’t quite figure out what. Caden is suspicious as well, but they have no proof.
Caden has a military background, but is battling some internal worthiness beliefs, because a mission went wrong and a close friend died. To keep from experiencing that pain again, he stays detached from most people. While it’s obvious that Caden and Allie would be good together, he rebuffs her because of that unworthy self-talk. Enter the nefarious millennials, and a few mean-spirited actions, and Caden and Allie are able to figure out what really matters.
This is the second story in this series. Each can be read as a standalone, but would be much better if read in order. What a fun series!
I really liked the role Caden plays in Allie's life and how this was the incentive he needed to fight his feelings of guilt and face the reality before him. After losing her brother and being forced to change her lifestyle, Allie's life had become about putting her nephew's safety first, as Allie was convinced that taking care of her nephew was now the most important thing in her life. Caden, possessive, antagonistic, and overprotective, had awakened in her feelings and emotions she thought she had left behind and that now made her feel frustrated. Caden, burdened by his past, didn't feel worthy of what Allie offered him and constantly struggled with feelings and emotions he couldn't control. But when danger loomed, decisions were quickly made. Allie was truly determined, protective, and bold. She faced everything! I liked the action and suspense surrounding the characters. I was interested in how Caden interacted with Ollie and all the details he had with Allie. I liked the support from the Langston Windward gang, the action, the suspense, the interesting plot development, and of course, I was intrigued by Gunnar. I loved this story with its adventure, romance, passion, and exciting danger, with villains who could appear around any corner.
Allie and Caden When her nephew Ollie is orphaned, Annie became a single mother in an instant, a life changing situation which brought her back home to Colorado. Now her time is spent dodging Lego bricks, and worrying that she is messing her kid up, while taking charge of housekeeping in the Langston hotel managed by her friend Tessa. Then there is Broody, also known as Caden, the hot head of security that keeps grabbing her eyes. Allie finds herself drawn to him, and when the two of them find out that some of the guests at the hotel are a bit more dangerous than they would like, they find themselves thrown into close proximity, as they rush to uncover the truth.
This is a fast paced romantic suspense, featuring Anna Hackett’s usual flair for the genre, some very steamy scenes, and a fair bit of adventure. Allie has been through some tough times, so it was nice to see her find someone for herself, and Caden likewise had seen some bad things, so being able to find someone who understands and supports him was great for him too. Keep a hanky close for the sweetly tearful ending (it’s good, I promise) and enjoy this entertaining read for romantic suspense fans and Hacketteers alike.
That was so good 🥹🥹🥹 Short and light but heartwarming with a hint of suspense plots. Perfect book for a one-sitting reading experience. Anna Hackett is a new-to-me author and this first reading experience of her book was perfect and I surely will read her other books, especially the next books in this series.
The found family trope in this book was heartwarming and made me invest in each character. I am 60% sure the next book is about Piper and Everett. But if it's Gunnar and Emily's book, I will not complain at all. Even if it were Enzo and whoever the lucky girl is, I would happily read it. Like I said, I invested in this series already.
Now, Allie and Caden. Wow, they were so hot with each other. Caden pushed Allie many times but I was so glad Allie didn't let Caden push her away. This is also why I liked this book, there was no nonsense drama between Allie and Caden. They were mature enough to navigate their relationship. I also loved Caden and Ollie's bonding. I was happy for Ollie that he could get a father figure in his life.
The suspense plots were also so good. Light but still fit my liking. The ending was perfect and I can't wait for the next book.
