Low Tides: A Heart-Pounding Political Military Thriller

A sunken Turkish ship sends an unlikely duo on a wild international manhunt when it turns out it was harboring a missing nuclear scientist.

Somewhere in the Mediterranean, 1998. Aboard the sinking cargo ship Doğruyollar, Dr. Andreas Gerber calmly waits for the Israeli Coast Guard to arrive, knowing they cannot change anything. His plan is already set in motion, down to the last detail. Now all he has to do is wait…

Israel, four years later. While on a routine exploration dive just a mile offshore, oceanographer Tamar Nevo pulls a water sample from the sunken wreck known only as “The Turkish Ship.” In the data, she finds something that makes no sense—deadly amounts of enriched uranium with no known origin or explanation.

Navy Major Erez Horesh is trying to find his place behind a desk, after an injury he sustained during a botched operation rendered him unfit for duty in the naval commandos. But some people just aren’t built for pushing papers.

When Tamar turns up in his office with proof of nuclear matter in the waters surrounding the sunken ship, his first instinct is to stay out of it—a job for environmentalists.

But when Tamar’s colleagues overseas start disappearing, Erez knows the usual channels just won’t do. What starts as an off-the-books investigation quickly spirals into a manhunt across international lines, where old favors are cashed in, every friend is a potential enemy, and to survive the pulling tide—you have to employ every skill your past has to offer.

Fast, gripping, and inspired by mysterious historical events, Low Tides is the third book in Israeli infantry officer Gal Hermon’s arsenal—a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it thriller with twists you will never see coming.

Attaching my review translated from Hebrew!

I borrowed Low Tides from work, and it happens to be the first Israeli thriller I have ever read. The book is slim and concise, so for those with free time—unlike myself, who took a month and a half to finish it—it could easily be completed in a couple of days.

The plot is straightforward yet utterly compelling. Tamar, a scientist at the Institute for Marine Research, and Erez, a career officer not exactly entrusted with saving the nation, stumble upon a matter of considerable gravity—something they were never meant to uncover. Rather than reporting it immediately to the “responsible adult,” they set out to investigate on their own, swiftly becoming entangled in circumstances that escalate beyond their control.

I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between these two “ordinary” individuals thrust into extraordinary circumstances. It carries the feel of translated fiction, yet retains a distinctly Israeli flavour. Gal Hermon invests considerable effort in character development, exploring their backgrounds, personalities, and the relationships between them. That said, having read the book in intermittent sessions, the characterisation occasionally felt a little thin—akin to pausing in the middle of a forty-minute television episode. Reading it in one sitting would likely have rendered the character arcs more impactful.

In conclusion, this is a short, fluid, and engaging book, ideal for a leisurely weekend. It is not unduly complex, yet it manages to convey a genuinely Israeli sense of suspense. Anyone seeking a narrative that feels close to home, yet brimming with adventure, would find it thoroughly worthwhile.

A fast, suspenseful and intelligent read. Gives an impressive sense of real life events, including the early 2000’s Israeli atmosphere and the interesting mix between true events and fiction. Highly recommended, you won’t put it down until the surprising end

Doing good is hard to do.

Glory days behind them all yet they stumble onto something that is wrong and needs fixing. Can they do it? Maybe. WhAt does it cost? Sometime s too much. A good easy read.
