Heather D. Grace is a fast paced urban fantasy author that loves to add a slow burn romance. When she's not busy writing about tough as nails female leads and their alluring protective mates, she and her husband spend time with their 4 children and 7 fur-babies, spending time exploring the beautiful mountains near her home and she helps in the veterinary field as an Registered Veterinary Technician.
The drama continues to unfold in this next installment to the Hidden Courts series. Tessa is feeling in over her head and who can blame her! The chaos is mounting and so is the danger! If the tagline in the blurb doesn't have your reaching for this book then I don't know what to tell you. Many doubt that Tessa is the Chosen One. What is a girl to do? Well, keep fighting to prove that she's who the realms need. But with unrequited love nipping at her heels...well, that just adds a layer of drama and tension that will have you eating this book up. Don't worry, we're right there with you. The skath are becoming a bigger and bigger problem for Tessa, but we can't get enough of the mounting tension from all sides. It's too delicious to ignore. This series is becoming a "who can you trust" type series and we love it!! Tessa has to be careful as to who she lets get close to her because more want her out of the way. It's tough being a beacon of hope for some and being seen as a threat to others. But thems the breaks kid! LOL! Brace for a cliffhanger that will leave you clamouring for book 3! The good news? You can go grab it now! LOL! Off we go!
The second book picks up right where the first one left off. Like the first, it starts out a little slow, but the pace definitely builds as the story moves forward.
I really enjoy the growing friendship between Kali and Tessa. It’s so nice to finally see Tessa with a true friend by her side. Neal, on the other hand, is still as frustrating as ever. He’s so rigid and rule-bound, never willing to bend, and it drives me crazy. The romance is a very slow burn (slowwwww), but I’m eager to see how their relationship develops in the next books.
Az is fully healed now, and I absolutely love the bond between him and Tessa. His snarky, passive-aggressive comments had me laughing and added such a fun touch to the story.
And that ending has an even bigger cliffhanger than the first book. Like how could you do that to me??? I need the next one ASAP!
This is book #2 of the Hidden Courts of the Fae Series, and it picks up where book 1 left off. I have loved this series so far and can't wait for book 3!!!
In book two, we get to meet Neil"s sister, who is going mad, being separated from her Leath (bonded pair), and they need to get her to court before she dies. Tessa, who is half human and half a fae, continues to try and figure out her healing power and is developing new powers as they go. Kali comes along, and I love the friendship between Tessa and her, and it has developed naturally within the last two books. Neil is frustrating because he is so by the rules, but i felt like towards the end of the book, he is starting to see how the Court leader maybe dosent have their best interest at heart...
I wanted to cry when Tessa found out one of the secrets that Neil was keeping because she was just devastated. Will love concure all with these two, or will Neil let power and comfortability win out. Az is really coming into his own, and I love the connection with him and Tessa!
Of course, this book does end on a cliffhanger, and you need to read book one to understand what is going on. I would recommend this series to a friend for sure.
I quite enjoyed the first book so was happy to see this latest in the series. Tessa is human trying to navigate the fae world while humans aren’t looked upon favorably. She and Neil have feelings for each other, and it’s forbidden, and while all this is happening, Neil’s sister is going mad from losing Sanji, and they must find him before it’s too late. This is a well-written paranormal romance/romantasy, and while this isn’t my favorite genre, I quite enjoyed this latest. I will admit I think Kali is my favorite character. LOL! I’m definitely looking forward to the next. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Thank you to Heather D Grace & her team for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!✨
WOW. This one was action-packed! So many feelings! THE ENDING. oh my gosh. Ok.
Tessa’s personal growth in this book was so much more. Discovering the depths of her current 😉 elements, and using them for herself and others around her was amazing. The zoo scene, iykyk. I am SO excited to explore that more later on!
I have really come to love Neil; he grew a lot in this book as well. He’s still our broody MMC, but he is learning that not everything is as black and white as he realized. He’s still quite naive ab emotions, as most men, but I love that he’s starting to realize Tessa may be worth breaking the rules for. Definitely helps to have Ezra chirping in his ear ab them being good together. Maybe Az will get on board one day!
The skath battles were bloodier than ever in this book. The zoo was crazy, and we learn a little more ab the skath and who they answer to. Let’s just say, Neil and Tessa are wanted. I’m so glad they were successful in their rescue mission (without giving too much away!)
We FINALLY get to court, and we learn why Kali and her people hate the fae, bc these sort of fae.. are quite awful to anything deemed “less” than them. Tessa’s ability to take the wrath of those closest to Neil speaks volumes of her strength. I am VERY curious ab Darien though… since lady refused to even ponder Tessa’s worth, and his piqued interest in Tessa… we love a little bit of male testosterone battles, but I worry for Tessa that the political game is just beginning.
I am glad that we got an update on Tessa’s mom; I’m glad she had Kali with her, and I’m glad that she realized she still had important things to do.
Then, THE ENDING. THEEEEE ENDING. I just kind of sat there slack-jawed when I read “the end.” I need book 3 IMMEDIATELY.
Welcome back to Aurellia, where Tessa and Neil are fighting their way to the Court and their feelings for each other.
Book two picks up right where book one ended and we are introduced to Neil’s sister who is in dire straights as her Leath, Sanji, has been taken. As she begins her descent into madness at the loss of her other half, Neil, Tessa, and Kali race to get her to the healers at the Court in an attempt to save her.
I love the friendship that has developed between Tessa and Kali and I’m so happy that Kali has joined them on this journey. She funny, feisty, and a valuable resource for Tessa as she continues to try and control and develop her magic.
Book 1 Neil left me frustrated as he was hyper focused on his task and I wanted more from him; I had hopes that we would get to see more of his story in the series going forward and I am so happy that book 2 delivered. Neil is still hyper focused on his task, and is still frustrating beyond belief, but as we delve deeper into his past, his training, and learn more of the world he comes from, it makes sense and gives you a deeper appreciation of where he is coming from. You can see Neil’s growth throughout the book as he begins to question everything he knows, and I’m loving it. We make it to the Court in this book and let’s just say I’d rather we had not. The fae are awful! It is a testament to Tessa and Kali’s character that they endure the abhorrent behaviours of the fae the way they do.
My biggest issue with book 2? That ending!! You can’t do this to me! 😂
Can’t wait for book 3!
Thank you to Heather D. Grace for the opportunity to ARC read this book!
rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my review voluntarily. wow what a wild adventure. Tessa, Neil, Kali and Naomi are en route to see the Lady when Naomi takes a turn for the worse. by some miracle they make it tp the healers and then meet the Lady. She is not who Tessa though she'd be...a bit rude but maybe that's a fae thing. They attend the ceremony where the Lady chooses their savior out of all the prospects each guardian has brought. what makes Tessa super mad is she learns Neil is engages to a horrific, racist against humans woman and his mother isn't any different. she decides to return home with Kali in tow. Neil knows Tessa is their savior and his years away from Court has shown him how messed up the politics are. right now his main purpose is to return Naomis leath to her. so Neil Tessa and Kali set out to find Sanji. but along the way they encounter skaith and uncover some truths. drama, adventure, heartache make this a good story.

Well, I LOVED this book! This had a whole new level of writing. It was still easy to read, but this time, there was drama that we could feel coming from the pages!
🌍𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕 𝕓𝕦𝕚𝕝𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕨𝕣𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕚𝕟𝕘: This book has a fair bit going on. There were good subplots, good secrets, a good political and b1tchy court, a new love interest, intrigue, and scepticism. That's all extra to the main story! The pacing was much better in this book too, it's was medium to fast all the way through with no parts that were dragging along, unlike book 1.
The world building was great what with the new locations coming into view and the way the author writes about the loathing that radiates from the fae- it's very relatable to anyone who has been picked on.
As in book 1, I do wish we had more information as we were going along. Little things to help flesh things out and some extra pages on backstories and personal developments would have been great. I would have liked to know more about why the fae despised everyone else so much, and we're still awaiting any information on Neil's family and his animosity toward them.
🧝♂️ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤: We get to meet new people in this book, but, like the way Neil was introduced- we meet them directly in an active scene and never learn much about them.
😥𝕎𝕙𝕪 𝕟𝕠 𝕗𝕚𝕧𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕤? A fair few little things annoyed me in this one, Neil was told to enjoy the ball before he heads off on his next mission in the morning- erm... I thought the mission was time sensitive and urgent? So why is he allowed to chill out and party and why - at the very least, didn't he complain/ protest that he needed to get going? That made no sense to me at all! I also didn't like that we didn't get to see/learn much about Tessa's powers this time. No training or even discussion on them was just odd. And again, the timeline was a bit off, and how fast things could happen.
⏳ 𝕎𝕠𝕦𝕝𝕕 𝕚 𝕣𝕖-𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕕 𝕠𝕣 𝕣𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕? I wouldn't re-read it no, but I would recomend this to anyone who likes light hearted high fantasy with achingly slow burns, animal sidekicks and quests!
🪧𝔽𝕚𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤: Very enjoyable series, it's not overly detailed or heavy to read so those preferring a less dark high stakes fantasy will love this! I am soooo looking forward to the rest of this series, it seems each book may be better than the last and I am desperate for this sloooooow burn to finally catch on fire!

𝕄𝕪 ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕊𝕪𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕞𝕤: ⭐️ DNF
⭐️⭐️ I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another authors hands
⭐️⭐️.5 It was OK. I wish i didn't start this one as It didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail] Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people, but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending to all!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!

Returning to Aurellia felt like stepping back into a world that was equal parts magical, dangerous, and deeply emotional 💫🌿. Court of Fire and Ash picked up right where book one left off, and from the very first chapter, it swept me right back into Tessa and Neil’s chaotic, heart-aching, slow-burn journey.
This installment was even more character-driven and tense than the first.🥺💔 Watching Neil, Tessa, and Kali race against time to get her to the Court felt urgent, painful, and heavy in all the right ways. It added a darker emotional depth to the story, and I was completely hooked.
I loved the growing friendship between Tessa and Kali 💕🔥. It developed so naturally across the two books, and seeing Tessa finally have a true ally—someone feisty, funny, and fiercely loyal—made me so soft inside. Kali really brought warmth and humour when the story needed it most 😂✨.
And Neil… oh Neil 😭🫠. Book one had already frustrated me, but here? We finally got to understand him—his past, his training, his rigid upbringing. He was still rule-bound and infuriating, but these glimpses into his world made every moment of growth feel so earned. Watching him slowly question everything he’d ever believed made me weirdly emotional. I felt for him in a way I didn’t expect.
Tessa’s journey was just as compelling. She was still discovering the extent of her healing magic, uncovering powers she didn’t know she had, and trying so hard to stay true to herself while navigating a Court that despised humans 😣👑. And wow… reaching the Court? The fae were awful—cruel, arrogant, and dismissive. It made me admire Tessa and Kali’s strength even more.
Az, fully healed now, absolutely stole scenes for me 😂❤️. His snarky comments, protective energy, and chaotic banter were EVERYTHING. His bond with Tessa was one of my favourite dynamics in the book.
And then… that ending. THAT ENDING. Heather—why would you do this to me??? 😭🫠💔 The cliffhanger was bigger, more shocking, and more soul-destroying than the first one, and now I’m just here, emotionally unstable, clutching my pillow and waiting for book three.
This series continued to grow in stakes, emotion, and depth, and I honestly can’t wait to see where book three takes these characters.
🌙✨ Tropes You’ll Love if This Is Your Thing: 🐎 Magical animal companion (Pegasus + Az!!!) 🌿 Half-fae heroine discovering her powers 😭 Race-against-time rescue 🔥 Slowwwww-burn romance 👑 Forbidden love 💔 Secrets that break trust 💀 Cruel fae court politics 🤝 Found family vibes ✨ Perfect for fans of Magical Creatures and Where to Find Them and cozy-but-tense romantasy worlds
Huge thank you to Heather D. Grace and The Nerd Fam for the ARC opportunity 💛📚✨. I’m fully invested, emotionally damaged, and absolutely ready for book three!
Disclosure: I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. As someone who loves supporting indie authors, I always aim to share thoughtful, fair feedback. While I have personal reading preferences like a love for fantasy, horses, or specific tropes, I never let that impact my rating unless it is relevant to the book’s intent or audience. I review with the genre and readership in mind.
Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spice: YA (only book 1–2)
If you have not read book 1 yet, please head over to that review first as this one contains minor spoilers for book 1, though none for book 2.
The journey continues and we get to learn more about the world. I really enjoyed the added depth compared to book 1, and I definitely feel like I know the world more now. That is always something I hope for in a second book of a series. I also appreciated how strongly the fae’s racism was portrayed. It made me want to shake some of those high and mighty fae for sure.
Tessa’s magical development is very well written, and I am so happy to see a slightly overpowered heroine. I hope this becomes even more pronounced in the next book. That said, these poor characters go through everything. They are kicked from all sides constantly. At times I was just begging for no more skáth attacks.
My reason for giving 4 instead of 5 stars is Naomi’s character. She is fighting insanity due to the distance from her Leath, but I felt the potential was not fully reached. Her insanity came across as one dimensional, switching between a childish, singing and dancing state and then back again. I would have loved to see more variety in those episodes, such as aggression, memory loss, confusion, or more emotional complexity. Even though she was supposed to be unpredictable, she ended up being the opposite.
Why this stood out to me is simple. In book 1 I was hooked by the incredible level of detail everywhere else. Every horse girl, trainer girl, and character detail was consistent and so well done that I could see the research and experience behind it. Naomi, however, did not receive that same attention.
Having said that, I truly loved the continuation of the story and I am left thirsty for more. The cliffhanger at the end is huge and now I have no more pages to turn. Romantasy lovers who enjoy plenty of plot with little to no spice so far will love this story. Just keep in mind that I have been told the spice level will rise in book 3, so slow burn fans, this series will definitely test your patience.
My absolute favorite quote from the book: "We're being attacked by the Heathers in some alternative universe."
If Book 1 built the world, Book 2 lights a match and sets all three realms on fire—in the best possible way. This sequel takes everything I loved about the first installment—the slow-burn tension, the dangerous magic, the tangled prophecy—and amplifies it with sharper stakes, deeper emotions, and a heroine pushed to her absolute limits.
The story picks up with the weight of “Chosen One” expectations resting squarely (and unfairly) on the heroine’s shoulders. And when her destiny refuses to cooperate, she does what she’s always done: pivots, claws forward, and refuses to let fate dictate who she must become. That determination becomes the spine of the novel as she races to save her mom, defend Aurellia, and keep the realms from collapsing under the prophecy’s looming threat.
The political tension tightens beautifully here. Doubted by the fae, hunted by the skáth, and pulled in every direction by forces who either want her power or want her gone, she becomes a beacon of both hope and danger. Watching her grow into that role—messily, stubbornly, and with more heart than she realizes—makes this sequel incredibly satisfying.
And then there’s the romance. The slow burn from Book 1 evolves into a scorching, forbidden, soul-deep ache. Her connection with her Guardian is more volatile than ever—equal parts longing, fear, and magnetic force. Every moment between them simmers with the constant tension of wanting what could destroy them both. It’s angsty, it’s intense, and it hits perfectly.
The plot doesn’t ease up for a second: Neil and the heroine must save Sanji, stop Naomi’s unraveling that threatens to derail everything, and figure out what the demons are really doing with the phoenixes they’ve been collecting. And once the truth emerges, the danger feels truly unstoppable.
What makes this book shine is that the stakes aren’t just world-ending—they’re personal. Every victory feels earned. Every setback hurts. And every choice pushes the heroine closer to the edge of who she is and who she might have to become.
A gripping, emotional, fast-paced continuation that deepens the lore, sharpens the conflicts, and leaves you desperate for the next chapter in this saga. Book 2 doesn’t just avoid second-book syndrome—it obliterates it.
Court of Fire and Ash picks up immediately where the first book left off; so much so that there is no "road so far" recap. Which is fine, since I just read the first book last month, but I always believe a recap is needed, since most people like me would forget who's who if it's been more than a few weeks.
I enjoyed the character development of both Tessa, the human half fae, and Neil, the fae Guardian. We finally got to see the horrors of the Fae Court and just how hateful everyone is to non-fae. Court politics are brutal and cold, as expected, and seeing the growth in Neil to start seeing the flaws and wishing things could be different is interesting. I wonder how many more books in the series until he completely turns his back on the Court.
The fast-paced plot made this book a quick and fun read. The stakes were high with Neil's sister losing grip with reality because her Leath (familiar) was kidnapped. There was a lot of walking, which I am not a fan of in these types of books (I call them journey books), but there was still a lot that happened to move the plot forward and not be repetitive.
The book reads easily and quickly, and sometimes I forget this isn't YA until suddenly there is adult language about the (forbidden) attraction between Guardian Neil and his ward, Tessa. Then I remember that Tessa is actually in her late 20s, not early adulthood.
The friendships Tessa forges, such as her bond with the short folk character, Kali, are lovely. Tessa is so compassionate and kind to all, wanting to help where she can, and both her Guardian and new friend come to appreciate this unique quality in their realm. I also am enjoying how Tessa is growing into her fae abilities, being more powerful than anyone imagined. Is she really the Chosen One from the Prophesy? What is even her role in the salvation of the realms?
That cliffhanger, though, is crazy. The first book ends with setting up for the next, but the conflict from the first book had gotten to a stopping point. But this? What happened? Why? What's next? I guess I need to wait for book 3.
I received this ARC from author Heather D. Grace in return for an honest review.
The second book in the Hidden Courts of the Fae series definitely sucked me in more this time. Battles, internal court suspicions, and a little more slow burn romance? Count me in.
I'm glad Tessa and the gang moved forward and through realms to be able to help Naomi and Sanji reunite. Honestly, hiding Phoenix in a zoo? Both funny and genius. And then the animals attacking proving that Tessa has another strong ability? Also great.
I'm surprised with how little I care for Kali. It has nothing to do with the author's writing or description, I just literally don't feel drawn to her yet. Yes she helps with the map and bridges but I forget she's around sometimes and I didn't miss her when she was in the Fae realm and Tessa and Neil were in the human realm.
Speaking of the human realm, I loved that Tessa peaced out and went back home for a day. It was so realistic that it was refreshing. Hopefully she'll be able to heal her mom in the coming books.
Neil starting to question the inner workings and training of the courts was exciting character development. At first I felt like he was just a one minded guardian, but now it's almost as if whatever blinders he had on are starting to come off. The Lady of the Moon was a bitch and her consort was no better. And what is up with Vidia and her cronies? I had definite mean girls vibes and then she was Neil's fiancee?! Ugh. And something is not right with Darian. Chosen One or not, that guy's an ass.
I cannot believe it ended how it did, but I'm so glad Naomi and Sanji were reunited and it seemed to stop the decent to madness. But that cliffhanger?! I can't wait to read the next installment!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Court of Fire and Ash is the second book in Grace's Hidden Courts of the Fae series. This a slow burn, urban fantasy romance featuring Tessa and Neil. This book picks up where the first left off; this series should be read in order.
As we learned in the first book, Neil had been one of the Guardians tasked with finding the prophecy's Chosen One. He and Tessa were on their way to the Courts of the Fae, along with their new little friend Kali, when they happen across Neil’s sister, Naomi. She is distraught as her Leath, Sanji, was stolen away and she is now trying to fight off the madness which comes when one is parted from their Leath. Tessa works with Kali to practice her newfound healing skills in an attempt to delay the inevitable. They briefly consider hunting down the skàth responsible for Sanji's abduction, and getting him back, but they quickly revisit that plan. The need to get Naomi to the healers at Court become their priority. This also allows Neil to complete his mission and bring Tessa to the Lady of the Moon. Their trek is fraught with peril and numerous challenges and once they arrive at Court, Tessa finds the experience to be quite underwhelming; she is less than impressed. Was it all for naught?
Kali has quickly become one of my favourite characters. I love her positivity and her determination. She may be little but she's full of heart and brings so much to the story. She is a wonderful friend to Tessa and has quickly become a confidante and mentor to her as well. Neil continues to be Neil. He is focused on his mission with limited emotional IQ. It was nice to see him interact with his sister as it offered another side to his character. As expected, Tessa's character continues to grow. While motivated by her mother's poor health and the desire to heal her, we continue to see her heart shine through. I look forward to seeing what comes next as further installments in this series are released.
I admit to being a little wary about this book after reading book 1, Court of Light and Dark. Well, NOT any more! Book 1 was definitely more of a world building book and that made it a completely different read than this one.
I read this book in a day, even with having to go out and adult. Tessa’s journey to see the Lady of the Moon is filled with skáth battles, arrogant fae, small minded beings, and surprises that aren’t good.
I love that Tessa remains true to herself while facing all these challenges and coming into more power. It’s clear to see why she’s the FMC.
Neil…well he hasn’t earned the MMC title from me yet. He may have the potential (small in my opinion at this point) to be the MMC, but he definitely needs to up his game. He’s still worried about breaking the rules and that is seriously hindering him in all areas.
I enjoyed how the Lady of the Moon and fae attendees at Court were portrayed, because based on other books I’ve read, the fae in this series run true to lore. They are self absorbed, play their games, and believe they are above all others.
I’m invested in Tessa and her journey to save her mom. She obviously has more power than the average fae and I cannot wait to see when it all evolves.
I feel that there is much hidden and I have so many questions. There is definitely something about Darian that doesn’t sit well with me, as well as the Lady of the Moon. Neil’s father…he needs to man up (or fae up) and grow a backbone. I hope the story of Tessa’s father is part of this series, too. There has to be more behind what he is accused of doing and I’m sure it was for a good reason.
Based on this book, I would recommend the series to readers.
I want to say thank you to Heather G. for giving me this book. There are my thoughts.
Plot: Good, cute and funny Characters: Love some, liked others, indifferent to few, hate the rest Writing: Great
This is book 2 in the series. It picks up right where we left off and I loved that. We get to meet new people. Hate the snobs, interested in the new guy and fond of the healer. Hopefully he’s an ally if not he can join my villain group. Because who doesn’t love a good villain. I can’t wait to see how her powers continue to grow and change. I never got that feeling of the author over doing it while reading. You know what I mean. Those stories you read and you think what now because something is always happening to the main character and it is just getting more far fetch each time. Never happened here. Even when things were changing and changing.
I want to see what happened to this new character that was introduced to us at the end.
There was not much world building in this book which was not a bad thing. It didn’t impact the story either way though.
Neil made discoveries and now he has to decide what he wants to do about it. Tessa has to lean more about her powers, figure out when and how she wants to fight for what she wants.
This trio is just starting this journey and they will get it done. The how is what we have to wait to read about.
Review of Court of Fire and Ash by Heather D. Grace
This book picks up right where Court of Light and Dark left off. Naomi (Neil’s sister) is found in a terrible state—the Skath have stolen her Leath, a loss that will eventually drive her into permanent madness. Neil is torn between taking Tessa to the Court to fulfill his Guardian obligations or immediately setting off to recover the stolen phoenix. Ultimately, duty wins out, and the group heads to the capital.
As they travel, Tessa becomes increasingly aware of the xenophobia and racism ingrained in much of the Fae population. Many look down on Kali for being a small person and on Tessa for being a halfling, adding tension and emotional weight to their journey. Once they reach the Court, nothing goes as expected. It’s revealed that the Lady of the Moon had multiple potential “Chosen Ones,” upending everything Neil and Tessa thought they understood.
From there, Tessa, Kali, and Neil are thrust into a race against time to recover Naomi’s missing phoenix. The character growth in this installment is fantastic—Tessa listens to her own heart and conscience, making decisions that feel true to her, while Neil, though still somewhat oblivious, is finally making progress thanks in no small part to his Leath, Ezra.
Overall, this is a solid second book in the series, and I’ll definitely be picking up book three. 4 out of 5 stars! Thank you to the Nerd Fam for the ARC.
*Note—these books should be read in order, and each does end with a slight cliff-hanger.*
Okay….
You’re on the ‘journey’ to see if you’re actually the chosen one or not…the one that would help bring back the pegasus & unicorns…saving three different realms from destruction of some sort…
But…
There are more hiccups in the journey…
Like meeting Neil’s sister…but only after the demonic skath has stolen her phoenix….and now if her phoenix can’t be recovered…she’s going to fall into madness…
Or…getting to the fae court & realizing that everyone seems to be royally stuck-up…
So…what do you do…when your main goal is still to master your gift to save your mother?
Pivot…
Figure out where the demons are stashing the phoenixes…rescue Naomi’s & figure out whether or not you really are the Chosen One…
Oh…and try to avoid a couple of the upper-class fae…so you don’t keep throwing water at them…
Is this all that happens during this part of their journey? Well…you’ll need to grab a copy of Court of Fire and Ash when it comes out in November (on e-book) to find out…
I’m loving this series….it is definitely a slow-burn romance between Tessa & Neil…plus he has some ‘house-cleaning’ to do (shall we say). There’s the mystery of the unicorns & pegasus….then the stolen phoenixes…so I have to wonder—how many baddies are there really?
this book plunges you deeper into a dangerous fae world filled with prophecy, power struggles, and emotional turmoil. tessa’s journey becomes more urgent as she races against time to save her loved ones and figure out her place in a realm that fears her strength. the tension is real, and the worldbuilding feels richer than ever — we finally get more fae court politics, skáth threat, and a glimpse of how brutal things can be.
the character growth here is outstanding. neil opens up in ways that made me surprisingly invested in his rigid guard energy, and tessa’s magic evolves in a way that’s satisfying without feeling rushed. the found family vibes with kali and the others add a warm undercurrent to all the chaos.
where it loses a little bit of polish: the pacing is uneven at times. parts of the journey slow down with emotional or political reflection, which can drag a bit for readers who want more action. and the ending — oh, that cliffhanger hurts, but it also makes me desperate for book three.
overall, court of fire and ash is a powerful second installment. it balances grit, emotion, and fae intrigue beautifully, and i’m absolutely invested in where this story is going. four and a half stars.
Court Of Fire and Ash by Heather D. Grace Fantasy/Romance Star Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Spice Rating 🌶️ . I received a copy of this book as an ARC.
This book picked up exactly where the other book left off and is packed with action. There continues to be a lot of character growth all around. It didn’t take me long to be fully engaged in the story and characters again.
Tessa continues to change and grow and evolve her powers. While struggling to out her feelings for Neil. Neil drops some major details on us this book that left me sitting there not knowing how to feel. Within this book you get introduced to the court and the Lady and none are as you would expect. There’s a ton of new world building and new creatures that you’d never expect. The entire book was fast paced packed with tons of action.
This book ends on a cliffhanger leaving you eagerly awaiting book 3. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy with easy to understand magic systems and animal sidekicks. It’s an easy series to get into and be totally immersed in. I cannot wait for the slow burn to finally ignite!
This book caught me more than the second. Tessa and Neil finally make it to the Courts! Though, I didn't much like how the Fae treated Tessa since she is the chosen one, especially the High Lady Of The Moon. She just gave off witch with a b vibes. Seemed like she didn't care or believe in the prophecy. They sent out a few guardians to search for the "chosen one" and then they have a ball to announce who they believe is the rightful chosen one. Surprise, surprise! They didn't choose Tessa!
You find out that Neil is actually engaged! But not because it's what he wants. It's an arranged marriage. The girl is a total witch and so are Neil's parents, especially his mother. If I could've came through the phone I'd have knocked her a good one. In this book you also read about them going after more Skáith to get back Neil's sister's Phoenix that was stolen by them and they also rescue the rest.
I truly cherish Tessa and Kali's friendship. I love how you get to experience her using her magic to make the bridges for shorter and less dangerous travels from enemies. I hope to see more and more things happen in the next book!

Tessa is just a regular horse loving girl trying to help her mom through another cancer diagnosis…or is she?
Min book one, Tessa discovers she’s actually half fae and a whole new world opens up. Unfortunately, part of that world involves saving the world she just discovered exists, but surprise surprise, they don’t want her half breed help saving it.
In this book, Tessa and Neil work to bring her to court to see if they agree she is the chosen one who will save their world when the time comes. Along the way, the meet Neil’s sister who is losing her sanity due to being separated from her spirit animal. Can they reunite them and save the world? Will their own feelings get in the way?
I read the first and second book. I will definitely read the third book. Although I want to know how it all ends (super mean way to leave off the book) I did find the heat between the main characters a little lack luster. They spent more time thinking about liking each other than doing anything to actually cause the liking to happen. There were also a few times where there would be a fast forward that I didn’t realize at first had done that.

"Court of Fire and Ash” (Hidden Courts of the Fae #2) sweeps us right back into the chaos where book one so rudely abandoned us. Tessa and her wonderfully dysfunctional entourage—Neil, Kali, Ezra the phoenix, and Azriel the Pegasus—plunge headfirst into yet another “side-quest” that feels suspiciously like the main event. This round, it’s all about Naomi (Neil’s sister) and her missing phoenix, though the ever-looming prophecy to save the fae still casts its shadow.
The gang also makes an ill-advised detour into Court, and let’s just say: I’d sooner have all my teeth yanked out without anesthesia than survive one polite conversation there. Between Vidia, Neil’s mother, and the new cast of “delights,” the author proves once again that fae politics are a masterclass in torture.
Expect fast pacing, fresh character layers, a romance that burns at the speed of a snail on vacation, and—of course—that inevitable cliffhanger. Read book one first, unless you enjoy the sensation of being dropped into the deep end without a floatie. For me? This was a delicious, maddening ride that only makes the wait for the next installment more excruciating.
Thank you Heather for giving me the opportunity to read the next book in the series for an honest review 🖤
This is book two in the Hidden Courts of the Fae series. This book starts right back in the action following the cliff hanger in book one. There is no gentle re-entry into the world, it's BAM let's go!
In this book we continue on the journey to the courts & missions where Tessa & Neil have the slowest of slow burn that could be humanly possible. The dual POV'S help that smoulder. “𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺. 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶.", excuse me Neil ❤️🔥 I really enjoyed Neil's internal turmoil over his emotions within the book and his character development.
A lot happens in this book, it has a lot of action with high stake moments. Some parts I audibly gasped as there are a lot of life or death moments, plus that ending?! Jesus. We are introduced to some new interesting characters, some really easy to dislike & some that have my interest piqued for what is in store going forward. I really enjoyed the book, the quirky humour used as too helps bring some lightness into the mix.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC read this book in exchange for an honest review.
We picked up book 2 in the series exactly where we had left off in book 1, and it didn't take long before I was fully engrossed once again. With new goals ahead for the gang, there is plenty of action along the way. The bond between them all is truly magical, and I especially love the friendship between Tessa and Kali. There's a particularly scary moment that had me gasping in shock and really worrying for one of the gang. There's some interesting developments with Tessa's abilities, which I was excited about, and I can't help wondering if book 3 will reveal even more! We learn a bit more about Neil and Naomi's family in this book, along with the expectations for Neil's future. Once again, we end on a brilliant cliffhanger, which has left me eagerly awaiting book 3. Heather's books are well written, with great detail, allowing the reader to fully picture the scenes as they read. I'm really excited to see where book 3 takes us.
Thank you, Heather D Grace and team, for an ARC of this book! Spoiler Free Review! After having mixed feelings on the first book, I came here to say YES!!! SO.MUCH.BETTER! Like I said in my review of Court Of Light And Dark, it felt like it was just ramping up, and it sure ramped up a lot!! I really enjoyed this book. Lots of action, lots of feels, and the ending was AHHHH! I need to know what happens next! Heather is the queen of cliffhangers.
Tessa is really starting to find herself in this book, and I am here for it! Neil is still our typical broody mmc, but the emotions he's starting to let loose and show *clap, clap, clap* I'm ready for it! The beautiful relationships with their leaths, the magic Tessa is starting to show more of, the action with the skaths and all the trials and tribulations on the adventures they are going on is really setting the tone for this series.
Lots of action, lots of fae politics that make you want to punch air, this series is REALLY starting to come together, and I can't wait to see what happens next!.
This book starts with us meeting Naomi, who is Neil's sister. She's in BAD shape and it's quickly discovered that her Leath (kind of a familiar, who is soul bound to their Fae), a Phoenix called Sanji, has been Leath-napped by the Skáth. The Skáth are the enemy of the Fae and will do anything to destroy them. So now not only does our trio have to make it to court so Neil can present Tessa to the queen as the Chosen One, but they have to do it while taking care of Naomi, who is quick devolving as time doesn't from her Leath deteriorates her physically and mentally. This book is full of family and friendship, very slow burn, magic and magical animals while criss -crossing our realm and the one of the Fae. Lots of political intrigue and backstabbing as our heroes try to save Tessa 's mom, Neil's sister and the entire REALM. It's very fast paced and ends on a cliff hanger. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to read the third book in the series. Thanks to the nerd family for the gift of both arcs.
We pick right back up where we left off in the first book. Tessa is trying to make sense of what is happening in front of her. Who is this woman? Why is Neil so obviously worried about her? Will this keep them from going forward to Court like they planned? Is Tessa willing to even think about her feelings that started to creep up from the kids earlier?
This is a good addition to the series. There were a lot of twists and turns that these characters had to face. I did like that there was more character building and world building that we were able to see. These added more depth to the storyline. I do like the pace of the story and never felt like it was dragging in parts and couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Like book one, this book also ends on a cliffhanger.
Book 2 picks up right where we left off with Tessa and Neil, diving us right back into their journey. The tension between them is palpable as they try to define what they mean to each other, internally of course...because communicating it right now would ruin the slow burn...we have to go through some complications first so they can figure it out, right?!? Meanwhile, Azriel continues to grow stronger, deepening both his bond with Tessa and his connection to her magic.
The other Fae they encounter are far from welcoming, which is starting to force Neil to question if not everything is as he once believed. Through the fights and struggles, this small unlikely group of friends seems to be growing closer, and I love that they have each other's backs.
I can't wait to read more and find out what happens since we were definitely left hanging!
