After a shape-shifting creature of legend escapes from its magical prison, Brynn Sullivan’s quiet neighborhood turns into a supernatural disaster zone. The nixie, a mischievous and unpredictable water spirit, is wreaking havoc and some strange activity in a nearby local pond is drawing way too much attention.
It’s going to be all hands on deck as Brynn tries find her beloved cat Bernie and track the creature down before it causes irreparable damage. But the nixie is clever, and worse, it’s angry. Every time they get close, it slips through their fingers, leaving more chaos in its wake.
Can Brynn and her team outwit the elusive creature before it turns the entire town upside down? Or will the nixie claim its freedom at the cost of everything... and everyone... in its path?
McFarlin is usually one of my top go-to authors - especially for Cozy Paranormal books. A few different reasons, but I had to score this one lower than usual. The characters were all there, but it just fell flat for me. Brynn was constantly out of sorts (sobbing/emotional) and everyone seemed to only be firing on 2-cylinders. Admittedly a few tough things happened, but it just seemed too much. When the final "show down" came it was a huge letdown. Just sort of finished and oh well... This won't stop me reaching for McFarlin books but this one just didn't do it for me - it happens.
I love Bernie but this book was over the top. Brynn does her thing bit it goes too far to the extreme. I love the team of investigators helping with these strange events but fun and lightness have gone from the books. If the continue to be like this I just cannot continue these. I read for fun not freak me out. The world is scary. I do need my reading to be scary too. Bernie and Brynn can defeat baddies without the heavy emotional twists.
This one was just way too intense for my taste. It is very well written, but the star system here is based on how much I liked it, so I couldn't give it more than 3 stars. I think maybe I need to back away from this series. I will miss Bernie, but I won't miss the ever more powerful paranormal creatures.
The plot of the series was good. The editing was very disappointing. After the first few books, it didn't improve, so I didn't feel like I could give the author a stars.
