I can't even decide who is the bestest boy in this series, Ichi or Gokuraku. I would trust them both with my life. Sweet boys (who are ready to beat someone up at all times).

4.5 stars — hooray!! gokuraku, with the help of ichi, saved his kingdom and becomes the hero in the eyes of his citizens, who wrongfully assumed he was a traitor! gokuraku decides to join ichi and the gang in their hunt!

I am enjoying the story and I will continue it. That being said, I do have a gripe of Ichi (who up until a few weeks ago) is kind of just jumping in to save the day. It’s almost irking me. Okay, I lied. It’s not almost irking me. It’s actually irking me.

Oh look, the man got to be a witch and now he’s this amazing bad ass who can conquer anything. Come on! Please no. And I know we’re building up and it’s only volume 4, but geez! Can we actually see some women witches in here? Don’t get me wrong, I know this is Ichi’s story and let’s be honest. Desscaras is the most powerful witch, so there’s no way we’re going to see her in serious action for a long time, but we can’t see anymore witches? Be competent? None?

Ichi is just this special gem that’s able to solve everything? I’m gnashing my teeth together because I am enjoying the story. I do like the art. It’s gorgeous and I really want to see more (I’ve preordered all the way up to volume 7, I believe. Or is it 8??), but I really hate the trope of, ‘person who’s new to the world is just suddenly the best thing since sliced bread and breezes over trials with ease.’

Will continue, because like I mention, I am enjoying everything else, but this trope has been grinding my gears this volume.

oh gokuraku's backstory and whole story line is so sad wtf??? i feel for him so badly and his family and honestly the entire kingdom. and AGAIN i love how ichi handles the situation and his relationship with gokuraku. LIKE HE IS JUST TRYING TO HELP MAN. UGH.

Could this story survive without Desscaras? Yes, I think, is the answer. It just wouldn’t be as good. This is a rather decent volume, but it really runs with this Gokuraku and Bakugami conflict as its focus.

Generally, I would probably call this the most shonen-y volume so far, but it works because the writing is still very good and I appreciate that it is trying to say something in between its very well-realized action scenes.

Honestly, a lot of this volume dispenses with the usual Desscaras vibe, although she definitely has her moments, and it also doesn’t do a lot with Uroro and his nonsense either. It is really zeroed in.

That doesn’t mean it can’t work and I thought that at least one of the surprises in the plot was really pretty clever. Totally caught me off guard there, but it also smartly feeds into the revelation of what Bakugami’s deal actually is.

It’s one thing to take some sadness from your life, but what’s actually offered here is much worse and I appreciated how that idea got explored and how it ended up playing into the big picture of the actual bad guy plan. It’s definitely a cut above the usual.

Amidst some decent flashbacks and the action we get a sprinkling of Ichi doing his thing and lots of the usual creativity. There’s nothing especially fantastic, but I have come to appreciate this much like Iruma-kun.

Kumugi could stand to do a little more, although she has at least one very funny moment this volume. And Ichi is a decent lead, but nothing to necessarily write home about. Somehow it makes a very impressive whole that is better than the sum of its parts would indicate.

I’ll definitely give you that the big showdown at the end has more than the usual thought behind it. I especially like the trials to accumulate majiks being so varied and used to keep mixing up the situations our team finds themselves in.

3.5 stars - probably my least favourite because not enough Desscaras, but there’s plenty of good stuff here. More than enough to make me think the quality drop isn’t that significant or anything.

Ichi feels like a vehicle for interesting characters. This volume focus on the back story of Gokuraku regarding his family and younger years. The art is fantastic again. Arc was laid out really well and in a cohesive way.

I must say, I would be susceptible to hugging cute things that are dangerous as well. If it was cat or capybara shaped I would be a goner.

Renouveau réussi du shonen d'aventure chez Kioon avec ce titre fun et magique où les codes de l'action sont si bien digéré. On dit ici l'héritier réussi de Black Clover chez Kazé selon moi ;)

Fun, frais, pétillant mais profond, voici sa recette. Depuis le début, je l'avoue, j'avais surtout noté le titre pour son efficacité et son look. J'adore l'univers graphique imaginé par Shiro Usazaki. Je me découvre maintenant un certain goût également pour l'histoire qui ne s'enferme pas dans un schéma préétabli de chasse au démon, au majik ici, mais y inclut aussi une belle parle d'émotion.

Ichi et Gokuraku, le nouveau duo improbable, s'est introduit avec leurs alliées dans le Pays du Bonheur, et non, ce n'est pas le Bhoutan malgré des influences évidentes. Car dans ce Pays, le bonheur est acquis au prix d'un lourd tribu : l'absorption de toute énergie négative et donc un bonheur forcé. Veut-on vraiment de cela si cela empêche par exemple de se souvenir des épisodes tristes mais nécessaires de la vie. Vous avez une heure ?

Philosophie et action sont ainsi bel et bien au rendez-vous de ce tome où je me suis plu à découvrir un tout autre Gokuraku que celui que j'avais rencontré. Prince déchu, frère et fils malheureux, en colère, en quête de vengeance contre le Majik qui a détruit sa famille, il forme un superbe duo avec Ichi. Le shonen, c'est aussi de belles histoires d'amitié et nous en tenons une ici, mise en scène énergiquement sur fond de quête magique, ce qui est fort réussi.

Les pages s'enchaînent. L'humour est toujours là. Les combats sont orchestrés avec beaucoup de classe. L'émotion point aussi joliment et serre le coeur. Tout est parfaitement dosé, calibré pour plaire au lecteur et ça fonctionne. Mon seul bémol vient peut-être de certaines cases où le dessin, souvent en gros plan, du personnage manque de travail et ressemble juste à des contours avec gros aplats, ce qui contraste avec la recherche lors des scènes d'action, mais c'est vraiment pour chipoter.

Pour le reste, j'ai vraiment été prise par cette quête de vengeance où l'on aide un ami à sauver sa famille qui elle aussi a bien le droit de faire son deuil sans se faire voler ses émotions. Captivant, vif et efficace, émouvant et jouant à merveille sur les codes des séries magiques mais aussi sur un décor hindou revisité collant bien au pays inspirateur, c'est une franche réussite et une très belle relève dans le shonen actuel. J'en redemande !

Hey we arrived! With this volume, the shonen antics really take off into a proper arc, introducing new, complex characters and world situations appropriate for the brilliant world and scale offered by the first several entries. Gokuraku fits a great archetype, and Ichi is pushed to explore new applications for his spells. It's a blast.

Honestly don’t have much to say about this one. It was a lot of fighting and action. I thought the scene where Desscaras was strangling Ichi with her legs was hilarious. I find it interesting that Ichi is so innocent sometimes like when Gokuraku was threatening him he didn’t care because he trusts him.

Finding our Gokuraku is royalty was shocking lol, but considering how young he was exiled it reminds me alot of Ichi I suppose, broski may be a prince but he was not living that high life fr.

strong 7. Villain's magic system was cool and there were some strong emotional moments, but I think the outcome could've been more interesting. Though I guess it isn't over yet...
