ATTEND THE ACADEMY FOR WINGED SHIFTERS, FIND A HUSBAND, AND YOU WILL BE PROTECTED.
Deemed the “Ugly Duckling” of the academy, Nix Oadess tries to find a husband by graduation, but she fails. When the other female prey shifters solidify their “protectors” by finding husbands, Nix goes missing.
Over the last four years, Nix has been kept in a cage, injected with poison to keep her weak, and experimented on by a sadistic mad scientist, who calls her his “Pretty Little Birdie.”
Finally, she dies. Alone. Not saved by anyone. Then, she wakes up six years in her past when she is twenty years old and a third year at Alatus Academy, before her future captivity and torture.
WITH THE PAST AS HER NEW PRESENT, SHE IS OUT FOR REVENGE.
Who has time for a bad boy incubus, a dragon shifter with a troubled past, and a studly yet stuffy gargoyle professor who keeps holding her after class when she has a future to change? This time around, Nix will learn how to protect herself—and kill her future captor before he even knows where to find her. Or she will burn the academy down trying.

Wings of Ashes is the first book in a new high-heat, paranormal shifters, why choose duet series. This two-book series asks the question of “What if the patriarchy existed in the world of shifters—and what if the underestimated female shifter burned it to the ground?” This duology is full of spice, revenge, and four dark and damaged love interests that she will not have to choose between. It contains adult themes, violence, and bad language.*
for my girlies who read “the blackened blade” and “fated by flames”, consider this - a third book with the same plot again!! but more feminist this time!
despite the very clear similarities between this book and the previously mentioned stories, I still read this and had a great time. some of it was questionable - I don’t know how to feel about the incubus seduction etc, but look… I had fun!
some iconic feminist speeches, some enjoyable potions and magic and whatnot, and the protagonist knew how to acknowledge she’d make a mistake. there was a touch more mm than I usually enjoy in my rh books, but I kinda glossed over it and have subsequently moved on…
cliffhanger was killer though - the wait for book 2 commences.
The fmc’s resolve to be braver, stronger, bring change to a patriarchal society but most importantly to change her future felt sloppy, lacked sincere drive and seemed secondary to the mmcs. From the start the fmc was more focused on the mmcs than the rage, determination and vengeance the author tried to portray.
I tried to be patient and understanding with the fmc’s maturity level as she was portrayed as an outcast and wallflower however, the mmcs and majority of all the males in the book felt more like 8th graders rather than college aged adults. The author could have done a smoother job of introducing attraction and sex that wasn’t junior high school and desperate.
Overall the book was a poorly written copy of “Blackened Blade”. The similarities wouldn’t have bothered me if the book was well written. I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1 because I just could not finish it and wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that the book actually got better in the end.
Sick and tired of supposedly strong female characters being so freaking weak they cannot do anything but be manipulated into every situation and manhandled by the “men” who can't control their pricks. I realize this book is more about the smut. But for the love of Pete.…. Even in that give us a true STRONG female character. Not butch. Just strong. We are capable of keeping our legs closed and having healthy sex lives at the same time.
Resurrection story, pnr, reverse harem, social commentary. Our heroine was adopted by a community of swan shifters, at age four after her parents were killed. She doesn't know her true shifter heritage because her adoption family has been giving her a potion to disguise her appearance. After graduation she was kidnapped and tortured by an unknown Alpha, who experiments on her and ultimately kills her. She wakes up six years into her past life when attending an Academy. Determined to change her future she enrolls in new classes and meets new people. The story is good, but the presentation is marred by constant interruptions for disturbing sexual innuendo and dreams created by Bael, an incubus. Instead of flowing with the story, these scenes felt forced and irritating. Book one of unfinished series.
I DNF a lot of books that can’t hold my attention. This one gripped me from start to finish. Sometimes you want a literary book, other times you need something a little dark, and then there are the items you need fun banter, hot men, and a slow burn. This was everything I needed in the moment. I was coming out of some serious books, like BOBH and darker books like anathema, this one had me chuckling and was just long enough to read in a day. The professor romance is what made me pick this up and I’m so glad I did. I can’t wait for Nix and Ryker to get closer in the next book. I’m bummed that there will be a fourth love interest in book two though, I suspect at least. I loved that there were only three. It’s the perfect number. Anything more than three is too hard to connect to each of them in a reasonably lengthened book/series.
This book is not just a book but a ride you can’t get off there are a few moments where your mad the mfc isn’t asking the question you want her to but then your stuck with the question you didn’t think to ask… I no crazy right it’s a must read the smut is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ but the plot baby the plot I am now ms Kate’s fan for life
I should've known to just pick up one of my long-time favorite author's books and I'd have been out of my slump by now! M. K. Kate always has the perfect blend of plot and spice for me. I'm super excited for when the 2nd book releases!
I read this book in one night. I'm a romance connoisseur ;) so trust me when I say this one was pure fun to read. Do it, do it....you won't regret doing it
