Chasing the Sunset

What if your life's dreams and visions never left you—what if someone was keeping them safe?

Lucy is trapped in a life that no longer fits. On the outside, she’s holding it together. On the inside, she’s unraveling. Then, one impulsive decision changes everything.

On a late-night errand, she's able to escape her emotionally abusive husband when she picks up a seemingly random hitchhiker.

She discovers the hitchhiker, Gabe, is actually her Vision Catcher—a guardian of the visions and dreams we have for our lives after we’ve lost them. From there, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery with her new guide to help her create a new vision and story for her life.

A powerful story of hope, healing, and second chances—Chasing the Sunset is a novel that blends emotional truth with contemporary magic. Perfect for fans of The Midnight Library, The Alchemist, and Big Magic.

This book was our December book club pick! I saw it had very high ratings so was eager to read! The beginning was catchy- but then it just plateaued for me. The politics and corrupt story plot was a -been there-read that! Ending was dull-

Did anyone see Octavia Spencer as Ray?

Lots of interesting characters but no one, overall, will I carry with me and or remember in books to come…. The ending said this was part #1 of the series…. I think I will skip the next book!
Leaving a positive- I think it does bring great attention to thinking about our dreams and meaning in life admit the chaos- that’s a take away for sure! 👍

The book is told from two different perspectives, one is Lucy who has lost her dreams and one of Gabe who is there to help her rediscover them. As the book continues it changes and it times I desperately wanted it to stay with the cozy self discovery after trauma story. The book however added a whole load of technology and intrigue and character development that I guess I wasn’t so keen on. There was, and still is, so much going for this book and I guess I wish the author would also just write the more gentle version. I found so much of it jarring. Maybe in six months time I will feel more robust and read it again, viewing if differently. I wrote a whole other review that feels irrelevant now I’ve completed the book. I don’t want to add spoilers but some of the changes are not negative and I think are actually empowering for people who have experienced abusive relationships and more realistic than going to a retreat and resolving all your problems with magic.
This author had me at the trigger warning. I think having a trigger warning at the start of a book shows so much thought. I love books and I respect them and also they are so powerful, an author that adds a trigger warning shows so much thought and compassion into their creation and I am so grateful. The warning includes domestic abuse, gun violence, death by suicide, infant death, homophobia and racism. I thought I would be fine but I wonder if these did play into some of my anxiety and difficulties. I love reading just before I go to sleep and at about half way I found I could not do that anymore.
At times I felt an emotional pull but the author didn’t follow it up, it felt so strange all set up but then deflated. I’m not sure why they made the choice to do that. For example after completing a moving activity with someone the protagonist instead of feeling happy and moved they feel disappointed no one praised them. I guess that’s a realistic response and I felt upset that no one had praised her and felt my emotions just go for happy and proud to sad. Not sure if that was the purpose.
Two quotes I copied both by authors born the same day as me which I found funny.
In conclusion would I recommend this book, I would have said yes if you like self help, magical books but now I’ve finished it feels like it’s for people who like a mystery along with the fantastical society which seems to be powered by magic and technology. This is the authors first book and I would like to see what they do next. If they write another book in this world I would read it. I would though love it if they would write this same book without the peril and without the technology, just the magic and without the peril for Gabe and for him to just be earning his wings with total support from, everyone and be able to focus on our protagonist and the peril being her resolving her trauma without any external trauma added. I think this would make the characters less interesting but I guess that’s the book I would have liked.
I’m giving it a 4 though because it is well written, the characters are well rounded, the author pays attention to the trauma and triggers and does not take the easy route. Also any book that mentions Dr Who has a special place in my heart.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this book for my consideration, this is all my own rambling, honest and personal opinions,

Chasing the Sunset is a warm hug! The book starts with Lucy impulsively leaving a toxic relationship but not knowing she will end up with at the Vision Catcher society, a society that helps those who seemed to have lost their vision(s) that spark their uniqueness. While her stay with the Vision Catchers and the help of her Gabe, her assigned Vision Catcher, Lucy gains courage and throughout the journey surprises herself with this newfound courage, faces her fears, gains confidence in herself, explores outside her comfort zone. All the characters (well almost all the characters) were loveable but all were well written and each one added a unique depth to the story. The book is a slower paced read but I loved the slower pace and all the descriptions that went into the story. Definitely recommend for those who loved Midnight Library, Cerulean Sea, Dallergut Dream Store and the magical realism genre.

True Rating: 4.5 stars ⭐️

Right from the first chapter I could tell it was going to be an emotional read. There is a Bible verse early on, which had me worried for a second, but thankfully it doesn’t become a main theme, so I was good with it.

The whole concept of the story pulled me in pretty instantly. I really connected with Lucy. She feels real. She gets stuck in her head, she overthinks, she struggles, but it makes sense because that is exactly how actual people move through trauma and big life changes. I kept finding myself hoping she would finally figure out who she is, what she wants, and what her life could look like if she actually chose herself. She is just an FMC you want to root for. Although, I will state that the abuse shown, even while emotional/verbal/mental, was a little simple. Either way, it still ignited emotions within me

There’s also this really beautiful magical element woven into the story that gave everything more meaning instead of feeling cheesy. I loved the idea of people helping others find their passion and purpose in a way that feels spiritual and creative at the same time.

Even when the story slowed down a little, I never lost interest. The emotional growth, the healing, the gentle encouragement, all of it just worked for me. Gabe especially is written in a way that makes him feel safe and comforting, and the author does a great job making you care about both him and Lucy.

I would absolutely read the next book. Overall it was heartfelt, inspiring, and quite comforting. I’m really glad I read it.

Chasing the Sunset is a heartfelt story about rediscovering yourself, chasing dreams you thought were long gone, and realizing it’s never too late to start over.

Magical realism isn’t usually my thing, so going in, I knew this wouldn’t automatically be a favorite genre for me. That said, I was more than willing to read it and support a new author, and I’m glad I did. Even when the mystical elements didn’t fully land for me personally, the message absolutely did.

The encouragement throughout the book really stood out. The reminders to never give up, to keep chasing your dreams, and to find your own version of happiness weren’t subtle, but they also didn’t feel wasted. Lucy’s journey is emotional and relatable in that “quietly unraveling while looking fine on the outside” kind of way, and that’s something many readers will recognize in themselves.

What I appreciated most is knowing that this story reflects the author’s own experience. Hope Epting Loschak revisited a book she started years ago, picked it back up, and finished her first novel. That alone makes the message hit harder. It’s proof that abandoned dreams aren’t failures, they’re just paused.

Overall, while magical realism kept this from being a higher rated read for me, Chasing the Sunset is sincere, hopeful, and encouraging. If you enjoy reflective stories about growth, second chances, and listening to that inner voice that won’t quite shut up, this book may really resonate with you.

I enjoyed this read, and I am not usually a fan of fantasy. However, this is a moving story about finding strength, realizing dreams, facing and overcoming fears, and forging a path for the future. Hope Epting Loschak has written this well, and with great imagination.

3.5⭐️

I found the premise of this book very engaging. It gave me a similar vibe to The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, the plot line involving a world where special people called “Vision Collectors” keep hold of the dreams and visions for your future that have been lost or forgotten over the years. These collectors can then take people who are struggling or going through a difficult time on a “quest” to explore their lost dreams with the hope that they will find a new path and be able to make a fresh start.

This particular story follows a young woman escaping from an emotionally abusive relationship, and her “vision collector” who is leading his first “quest”.

The main storyline of our fmc dealing with the many emotional issues involved in leaving an abusive relationship is done well, if a little simplistically. Things sometimes seem to be happening much more quickly and easily than would be realistic in this situation, although you can see where the author is trying to show the challenges involved in recovering from leaving a horrible situation.

And then there’s a secondary storyline involving the vision catchers side of things, dealing with a new “app” that tracks and scores the individual’s progress on their quest but appears to have some bugs, and the insecurities of the vision catcher himself in navigating his first quest and his fears that he won’t be able to guide our fmc to a new start.

Overall I enjoyed reading this, the storyline was interesting and I did feel invested in both our fmc and our vc (although I did find him annoying at times!). I do feel that the language and writing was slightly too simplistic and basic, with things happening and resolving very quickly to the point that I didn’t feel hugely immersed in the world.

I do think there is a lot of potential for further stories, that maybe go a little deeper in both world building and character development.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this eARC.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Victory Editing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review (and spoiler free)

That was good, very touching at some moment, and I would also say it's been an inspiring story.

I want to think there's a lot of us who have gone/will go through a time in their life where we feel totally lost, we don't know what's good for us anymore, nothing really sparks joy.

Lucy's story is quite like that, on a more darker and desperate side. She's not "just" lost : she's lost, she lives with fear, dread, anxiety, stress... She's in a bad place, but she will need help to really realize it. (Without any spoiler, safe to say that I was LIVID when reading about Colt and his doings.)

Lucy will find a really good support in Gabe that she finds along a road, whose mission is to help her find what could be her new beginning, to find ways of making her be maybe the best version of herself, and more importantly, connect with herself again.

Throughout the book we go through a good amount of life lessons, wise words and wise pieces of advice, a lot of situations where we as readers can totally project ourselves in and make us feel for the different characters.

The only thing I had a hard time with at first was Gabe's POV and his path, I was SO invested with Lucy and her troubles I didn't really get why we got so much more insight from the Vision Catcher part, it felt a little bit frustrating in the first part of the book. In the end I still don't know how I really feel about having this dual POV, following both of them and their challenges, but one thing I can say is I'm not mad about it.

I'm just unsure about how much the whole Visions Catchers insights brought to the story, if we're meant to focus on the journey itself, how people go through the change of being lost to finding a new fulfilling path.

On a more positive side, I'm saying this book was inspiring because being in a part of my life where I'm not sure about what to do with this life and how I could be better connected with my.. dreams? or what even my dreams are, I really felt for Lucy and I was really invested in her journey. I loved her path, highs and lows, I loved the steps she took, her attempts, her failures, etc, it's like I kinda wanted at some point to go on the same journey.

Overall, even though the characters go through really hard and sometimes heart breaking times throughout the story (hard times where you really want to throw punches at people tbh), the book leaves us on mostly positive feeling and again, inspiration to apply some of the lessons Lucy learnt to our own lives. I would give it a good 3.5 stars! ☆

While this beautiful novel is not for the faint of heart, it will resonate with anyone that has experienced trauma. Hope keeps it very realistic when it comes to the pain, denial, second guessing choices, remorse, and how we make excuses for others actions. While she does sprinkle in some amazing magick along the way, it is also so well written, you will experience all the feels. With that being said, please give yourself grace if this becomes too much at any time. I myself am over a decade and a half in my own healing journey and had to take breaks over the few days I took to read this.
This novel follows Lucy as she builds the courage to leave her abusive husband, and goes on a journey to find her "new" self while healing. Her Vision Catcher, Gabe, who has also had a few of his own struggles and insecurities, is bonded with Lucy. They work together to help each other, taking it one day at a time, on their 40 day quest. They enlist help from many individuals and work together as a team, trying to do the best for everyone.
There are hiccups along the way that keep it realistic, and at times rest becomes most important.
I loved being able to see glimpses of others journeys along the course, and I can not wait to see what happens in the next installment!
Hope you have a way with words and a true understanding of trauma, and it shows so well in this beautiful piece of literature.

This is all about a woman's journey (Lucy) and rediscovering herself. This definitely covers some heavy topics but it's also filled with healing, and hope.

We follow Lucy who's escaping an emotionally/verbally abusive relationship and her "vision collector" Gabe who guards her dreams.

I absolutely loved all the references to Alice in wonderland ♥️ I liked the different perspectives we got. One being Lucy's and her journey but also Gabe and insight to his role. Overall I thought this was well written and it flowed well.

What grabbed my attention the most was the overall message. No matter what obstacles, trauma etc you've had to overcome in life don't ever forget about your dreams and it's never too late and absolutely ok to take the time and journey to rediscover who you really are and still obtain those paused dreams that you thought were gone.

I typically don't read books like this so I'm glad I did and happy I read it. I really enjoyed the premise and concept. The magical element was a really nice touch considering how heavy and emotional Lucy's journey is.

✔️Second chances
✔️Rediscovery
✔️Healing
✔️Modern magic
✔️Hope
✔️Emotional truth

I had the chance to be a beta reader for Chasing the Sunset, Hope Epting Loschak's debut fantasy.

** Mild Spoilers: If you want to be surprised at every turn, please skip this review! **

Lucy is a woman who impulsively sets out to start over in a new life, and Gabe is a magical Vision Catcher who's been assigned to help her recover her lost dreams. The story alternates between their points of view as they work together to find a new and satifying future for Lucy while dealing with red tape and shady dealings within the Vision Catcher organization.

Although the marketing doesn't call it cozy fantasy, it seems fair to put it in that category. The Vision Catcher society of magical beings is beset with all the issues of any large bureaucracy, and the community of characters at Aunt Rae's B&B has that combination of warmth, community, and interpersonal drama you'd expect from a cozy. Game nights! Eggs and bacon! A magical clothing closet! I'm there for this kind of thing.

The story is funny and inspiring, with a mystery that kept me turning pages. It's the first in a series and I'm definitely looking forward to spending more time in this world!

Chasing the Sunset is an emotional, introspective journey about rediscovering who you are when life has slowly pushed you into a version of yourself you barely recognize.

Lucy’s story isn’t always easy to read — the book doesn’t shy away from difficult and challenging topics, especially as she confronts the reality of a toxic relationship and the weight of long-buried doubts. But that’s exactly what makes her growth so meaningful. With the guidance of Gabe, her “Vision Catcher,” and the support of others she meets along the way, Lucy begins a transformative quest that forces her to look inward, face uncomfortable truths, and remember the dreams she once had for herself.

What I loved most was watching Lucy slowly reclaim her voice and her courage. Her journey toward leaving what no longer serves her and choosing to finally live for herself felt honest, hopeful, and deeply human. The blend of emotional realism with a touch of spiritual/magical guidance added a unique layer to the story without taking away from the heart of it.

This is a thoughtful, empowering read about healing, self-discovery, and the bravery it takes to chase your own sunset.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I love any story about a female protagonist going on a journey to discover herself after an abusive relationship, because it's very relatable for me. The twist of the vision catcher being part of an entire other world-within-our-world was odd at first but quickly became a fun concept. But then the plot got really murky, disjointed, and our protagonist instantly became a background character in favor of our male supporting lead. The message behind the story went from "woman rediscovers her purpose in life on a vision quest" to "man takes down a corrupt system by challenging the equivalent of a government agency" all within the last 20%. Our main storyline was wrapped up quickly in the course of a catch-up chapter rather than the last 20% of the book going through the end of her story with us. It went from a 4.5 star read to a 3 and it was really disappointing at the end. Excellent concept, lackluster application. Some of the dialogue felt like clunky filler and fluff that didn't add to the characters or the story, and I would have been willing to forgive that if the ending had stayed on course, but because it wasn't I just can't.

Chasing the Sunset is a heartfelt and beautifully written story that shines brightest through Lucy’s journey. Her character’s emotional depth and resilience captivated me from the very beginning, and I found myself eager to return to her every time the narrative shifted elsewhere. Hope Epting Loschak brings Lucy’s world to life with tenderness and insight, crafting scenes that linger long after the last page. While the subplot involving the software app introduced an interesting, modern contrast, it occasionally drew attention away from Lucy’s story, where I felt the true soul of the book lived. I often found myself wishing those sections were shorter so we could spend more time immersed in Lucy’s transformation and the relationships that defined it.Even so, Chasing the Sunset is a moving, memorable read that explores love, growth, and the courage to find light after loss. It’s a story that will resonate deeply with readers who appreciate character driven fiction and emotional authenticity.

Loved this book! Once I stared I kept coming back to, staying up way later than intended reading just ‘one more chapter’, or sitting down to a few chapters rather than flicking the TV on. It’s for sure a page turner!

Chasing the Sunset left me with a lovely feel-good glow. The writing style is easy to take in; you get enough depth of the characters without being bogged down in details, and enough of an understanding of the surroundings to be able to visualise where the scenes take place.

For all it is a ‘fantasy’ style story, it certainly doesn’t feel implausible, in fact I’d really like to imagine that I had my very own Vision Catcher once upon a time who watched my visions and recorded the somewhere in the hope that they were inspiring enough to keep.

Absolutely cannot wait for the next book - I’m now firmly invested in Gabe’s career, and how the Vision Catcher community will support the next intake of Originators.

I received a copy of this from the author. And I am so glad I did.

This was an emotional read. There were emotional abuse aspects that left the fmc, Lucy, lost and forgetting her dreams. She gave up, until Gabe, her Visions Cathcher, comes into her life and she embarks on a journey of re-self discovery.

I loved this story, the road Lucy embarks on with the help of Gabe, takes her through her paces. It makes her reevaluate herself and figure out what she wants in life again. To rediscover her vision. The real world aspects combined with the magical aspects really came together beautifully. It flowed nicely and felt organic.

This was a heartfelt and inspiring story, giving you hope.

I can't wait to read book 2 and see where it goes.

Lucy has just left a relationship that was emotionally abusive. Gabe is a Vision Catcher who’s been assigned to lead Lucy on her quest—finding her best possible future self. During her evolution, Lucy comes across an array of wonderful characters in the Vision Catcher organization. I really want to hang out at that B&B for so many reasons!

The writing was very engaging. I appreciate that the break up was handled compassionately and the author didn’t dwell too long in the emotions that can bring about. There was plenty of light-hearted moments and warmth that made the book feel like a getaway for the reader. What a warm, happy feeling I was left with by the end of the book.

What an amazing book. Lucy was such a great and emotional character. Finding the courage to leave an abusive relationship was such a huge step all on its own. But even she came across Gabe Ava he took her in a journey to find her dreams and herself, was just beautiful. I loved the idea of Vision Catchers and how they assist others throughout. This book was emotional, loving, and just so wonderful. It felt so refreshing for me to read something that isn’t normally a go to for me. But in really glad that I gave this one a chance. Thank you so much Hope for allowing me to read this for you. I truly enjoyed it, and I’m looking forward to what you come out with next.❤️

Catch the Vision. Empower the People. Create Lasting Change.

Chasing the Sunset is a cozy magical realism book about Lucy. Lucy is stuck, she is in an abusive marriage and has lost sight of herself. After a change meeting with Gabe, a hitchhiker, Lucy finds herself going on a journey of self discovery. With the help of Gabe, Lucy learns just how powerful dreams can be.

Hope Epting Loschak did an amazing job of setting the scene and creating a deep connection to all of the characters. I found myself not wanting Lucy's journey to end, so that I could continue to meet new people and learn more about them.

The ending was a bit rushed in my opinion but it was still a great read.

"Catch the vision. Empower the people. Create lasting change."

This story is a very wholesome read and truly reminds you to remember to chase your dream no matter what is happening in your life. It's a great read a touch on some serious topics like domestic abuse, racism among others but it focuses on healing from the situation and overcoming to find your true self. I truly loved the friendship Gabe and Lucy developed throughout the story and how they helped each other overcome their self doubts in the end and how she found her a group of friends in the process. I can not wait for book 2 to come out and follow more of Gabe's journey!

I really enjoyed this as a opening chapter in the Vision Catchers series, it had that hopeful feel that I was looking for and thought uses the magical element perfectly in this world. The characters were so well written and enjoyed how they worked so well in this universe and in the genre. I enjoyed the way Lucy was written and getting to know her and Gabe. It was everything that I was wanting and left me wanting to read more in this series and from Hope Epting Loschak.

I received an advance reader copy of this novel, from NetGalley, in exchange for a fair review. This novel was advertised as a similar read for fans of The Midnight Library, but I found the writing to be lower quality and I felt the character, development and conflicts were obvious and disengaging. I really wanted to write to like this novel and I did read at least 50% before choosing not to finish it.

I'm sure for the right reader it would be an excellent novel about self-discovery and overcoming our pitfalls, and the traps we create for ourselves in our lives. But for me it was not as enjoyable or philosophical as I was expecting, given the reference to The Midnight Library in the promotion material.

I really enjoyed the journey this book took me on. Its about a young women who feels stuck in her life and feels she has no way out. She us married to a man who mistreats her. One day she finds the strength to leave him and when she does that's when she meets Gabe and her true adventure begins. Its about healing and finding courage to leave behind what holds you back from living your life to be who you were ment to be.

A feel good palate cleanser about chasing/ recovering your dreams and not letting other people hold you down.
I thought there was good pacing between obstacles and overcoming them.
Many of the previous reviewers have made comments about “fantasy not really being their thing.” I think this book just hasn’t found it’s audience yet.
It is for adults who have lived a little, experienced loss and trauma, but aren’t afraid to let the magic bleed in.

Chasing the Sunset hurt in the quiet, honest way truth does. Lucy’s slow loss of self, the fear of leaving, and the fragile hope of starting over felt painfully real. Her healing isn’t rushed or romanticized—she doubts herself, stumbles, and still keeps choosing herself. This book is tender, brave, and deeply validating, a reminder that it’s never too late to chase the life you want.

This is an emotional character-driven story that really leans into growth, healing and connection. The atmosphere is vivid it’s all most like your watching it play out and the relationships feel layered rather than just surface level. The journey unfolded naturally allowing the emotional moments to land without feeling rushed. It was heartfelt, engaging, and a satisfying read.
