A daring lord and a young woman find themselves in peril, igniting a possible romance as they escape to stay alive.

I have been thoroughly enjoying this series, and this latest installment only adds to its intrigue and excitement. While it can technically be read as a standalone, I highly recommend following the series from the beginning to fully appreciate the development of the overarching mystery—who killed Baron Filminster?

In this book, a pivotal letter surfaces, shedding light on six potential suspects. Our steadfast trio—Lord Brendan Ridley, Lord Aidan Abbott, and Lord Julius Trafford—are determined to unravel the mystery and protect their families. The tension escalates when Julius’s attempt to lure out the villain backfires, leaving him grievously injured outside his father’s home. Enter Miss Audrey Gideon, trained as a physician’s assistant by her father, who feels compelled to save Julius’s life. However, her noble act has unintended societal consequences, as her absence from an expected visit leads to damaging rumors.

Julius and Audrey soon find themselves on the run, their fates intertwined as danger lurks at every turn. Their journey is both thrilling and heartfelt, revealing layers to Julius beyond his foppish facade and showcasing Audrey’s resilience and intelligence. Their dynamic is captivating; their friendship blossoms into something deeper, even as they grapple with their feelings.

The author has masterfully crafted a story rich with engaging characters, sharp wit, and heartfelt connections. The interplay of mystery, romance, and friendship creates a vibrant tapestry kept me eagerly turning pages.

As the mystery of Baron Filminster’s murder inches closer to resolution, I find myself eagerly anticipating the next installment. This series is a true delight—each book more engrossing than the last. Kudos to the author for creating such an immersive and compelling narrative!

This is a fun and compelling novel that weaves an opposites-attract love story between the foppish Lord Julius Trafford and the serious and intelligent daughter of a doctor, Audrey Gideon. When Julius is attacked and nearly killed, Audrey uses her medical knowledge to help him, but is inadvertently drawn into an ongoing murder investigation.

Jarrett has created fresh and interesting characters, and it is delightful to watch their romance unfold. The dialogue is crisp and lively, and the settings are lovely. Julius has never wanted to get married, and Audrey wants to pursue a career in medicine. How can this relationship work? With numerous twists and turns, Jarrett keeps the story moving to an ultimately satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

I dearly loved this book! Audrey, the FMC, was lovely and smart and caring, as is evidenced by her care of Flapper. It was so wonderful to see Julius’s character develop beyond the foppish, not-a-care-in-the-world lord from previous books in the series, and to get to learn why he is the way he is. I truly wanted to shake him by the shoulders on a number of occasions, which is how I know he was well-written, and thus very real to me. I do love seeing characters from previous books make repeated appearances, but I am so ready to know who killed the baron now.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and clean historical mystery romance. The well-written plot is captivating and full of twists, humor, suspense and a touch of danger. It features stranger to lovers, opposites attract and marriage by scandal tropes and runs parallel to and intersects with the previous books in the series. Audrey and Julius are lovable protagonists and are a perfect match for each other. She is just the right person to tame his headstrong character with her level-headed but helpful demeanor. I already liked Julius in the previous books in the series, and it was nice to finally find out why he behaves the way he does. I enjoyed seeing some of the protagonists from the previous books again.

The story can be read as a standalone novel, but I recommend reading the series from the beginning to get to know the backstories, previous events and the other characters. The book ends with another cliffhanger.

Since his mother and sister left the rest of the family to live in France due to his father's neglect, Lord Julius Trafford has rebelled against his strict father, Lord Stirling, who puts his work for the Crown above his family, by behaving like a superficial, eccentric dandy. Julius has no intention of growing up or falling in love, let alone getting married. He has no desire to enter into an unhappy marriage like his parents'. However, with his friends recently married due to scandal, he finds himself lonely and bored. So he decides to set a trap for Brendan Ridley's father's killer, putting himself in danger.
Audrey Gideon loved her quiet country life, where she assisted her father in his work as a doctor, but then her father died and she was taken into the care of his friend, the Earl of Stirling, who brought her to London, a city she detested.
When the Earl leaves on a trip abroad and Audrey is sent to a chaperone during his absence, she witnesses Julius being attacked and nearly killed by a stranger. She rushes to his aid and hides with him to care for him, even though she knows this will ruin her reputation. Together, they set out to find the murderer...

Overall, a delightful blend of historical romance and cozy murder mystery with an eccentric hero, a strong heroine, suspense, humor and heart, that I am happy to recommend!

Julius Trafford, her to the Earl of Stirling, is determined to help his friend Brendan Ridley, now Baron of Filminster, since the murder of his father/uncle, discover the murderer who is continuing to harass the Filminster household. Unfortunately, Julius’ actions lead to a confrontation at his own door with a knife-wielding assailant. He is saved by Audrey Gideon, his father’s ward, who charges out of the Stirling residence with a sword and drives the attacker off.

As a trained, but unlicensed physician, Audrey goes with Julius into hiding to tend to his wounds. As Julius heals, Audrey, dressed as a boy, accompanies him in his quest to find the killer and his attacker.

Both enjoy their time together and each is aware of the damage to Audrey’s reputation if their unchaperoned adventure is discovered. Julius recognizes that he will need to marry Audrey, but his parents’ separation has left him unwilling to pursue matrimony. And marriage hadn’t been in Audrey’s plans.

This is the third book in the Reluctant Reckonings series, which is unraveling the murder mystery like the serial movie mysteries of last century or cliffhanger television series. The cast is excellent. Each of the protagonists are distinct from the pair in the previous story. The heroines are each intrepid in her own way but adhering to a moral compass that isn’t conforming to Society. The storyline carries through but each plot is distinguishable. And like the audience of those old movie serials, the reader is eager for the next installment, which, sadly, isn’t just a week away.

Julius, Viscount Trafford, wears brightly colored clothes, beds widows and mocks almost everybody and everything. But when he declares you a friend, he will move heaven and earth to keep you safe. He, Brendan and Aiden are investigating the murder of Brendan’s father. Since Aiden is newly married, and Brendan and his wife have been dealing with house invasions and attacks, Julius decides to take matters into his own hands. Having narrowed down the list suspects, Julius embarks on a course of action that winds up having him fighting for his life in front of his home. Luckily for him, his father’s ward Audrey, whose father was a doctor with whom she studied, comes to his rescue. They hide out at his aunt’s house while she treats his wound and resulting fever. Unfortunately, since Julius’ father was going out of town, Audrey was supposed to stay with Lady Astley, who made sure everyone knew that Audrey and Julius were both missing. As Julius and Audrey continue to investigate, they develop feelings for each other and things get complicated. In this story we learn the incidents and beliefs that have shaped Julius’ attitude and behavior. There are dangerous moments, close calls, clandestine meetings, bungled conversations, and a whole slew of surprises. It is always fun to watch a rake fall in love, and this story is no exception. Audrey is a delight, and the perfect woman for Julius.

Technically, this is the third book of The Reluctant Reckoning series. Each of the books have a common mystery which is narrowing down suspects of a murder. But each book also has its own sweet charming romance. In this story, we have Lord Julius Trafford, who has vowed to never marry. But when a young woman puts her life in danger and her reputation on the line, he may have to rethink his position. Audrey Gideon is in morning of her, dear, beloved father. She had been by his side as he proved his merits as a competent and caring physician. And all she wants is to be able to follow in his footsteps and publish his journals.
There are some entertaining scenes and witty banter. I have had the opportunity to read the other books in the series and I cannot quite pinpoint why but this one I struggled with. I couldn’t really get into the story or the characters. I liked the characters but just didn’t feel a connection. As far as the mystery, I kind of think it’s being drugged through the mud and not really that intriguing. One scene that had me perplexed was Mr. Abbott and Miss Smythe on the balcony. Somewhere I lost the connection, if there was one. Were they secretly courting? All that being said I am glad I finished the story and will be reading the next book. I would definitely recommend reading the series in order to understand the different characters and situations. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I am so enjoying the Reluctant Reckonings Series, of which Miss Gideon is the third book, and can't wait for the next one. Although it's not necessary to have read the first two in order to enjoy the stand alone romance of Julius and Audrey, I recommend you do if possible in order to follow the overarching murder mystery of the series to best effect. I was hoping a story would be centred on Julius, the witty, devil may care, irreverent fop, introduced in the earlier books and here he is with all his hidden depths together with the serious minded, clever, brave Audrey who just wants to follow in her doctor father's footsteps. C N Jarrett has created engaging, loveable characters; decent, honourable people who are prepared to put themselves at risk in order to help their friends. As usual there is something fresh about the characters, their backgrounds and the family dynamics that made them who they are. The plot is well crafted with a very satisfying ending, although of course we still don't know who killed the Baron, but that hardly matters in terms of the core story of Miss Gideon and the Incident and it does mean that there will be another book to enjoy! Highly recommended.

This is another book involving a group of friends, young men involved in solving the murder of one of their fathers. This book is devoted to the involvement of Julius Trafford, honorary viscount and heir to the Earl of Stirling, and how he nearly loses his life as a result. Because of the skill of Audrey Gideon, who learned medicine at the side of her father, Dr. John Gideon, Julius’ life is saved.

I really enjoyed this story as it explored the growth of the relationship between Julius and Audrey. The elements of medical care that were described as being used by Audrey were most interesting, and gives an appreciation of the slow growth of medical science up to that point in time.

A further interesting theme was that of the disruption of the marriage of Julius’ parents, all because of lack of communication. This is a lesson that will benefit all of us.

As to the murderer being sought, several suspects are eliminated, with only 1 remaining candidate awaiting further examination. At this point, the authorities are brought into the investigation, which ends this volume. As to our young couple, Julius and Audrey, they find their HEA!.

This is the story of Julius Trafford and Audrey Gideon. With another of his friends getting married, it falls to Julius to continue the hunt for the baron’s murderer. After the death of her father, Audrey is staying at the Stirling family home under the protection of the Earl, Julius’s father. When she sees Julius being attacked on the front doorstep by a man with a knife, she doesn’t hesitate to rush to his aid…….

This is another well written and well researched book by the author, but this time it’s more of a love story than the hunt for the murderer. Julius has never intended to marry, the estranged relationship between his parents has affected him deeply, but the author covers his developing feelings of love and his fear of recognising it as such beautifully. It again has appearances from some of the excellent characters that have appeared in the Dazzling Debutantes series and earlier books in this Reluctant Reckonings series, so I recommend starting the series at the beginning as not only will the story flow better, but in my opinion all the books are well worth a read. I look forward to the next instalment as the hunt for the murderer continues 🐈‍⬛.

Well, another great read in this series. Full of drama, society, emotions, love, family, friends, murder, surprises, mystery and a marriage of convenience. Audrey is staying with Lord Stirling but when he has to leave suddenly, she is to go to Lady Astley as her chaperone. Lord Trafford, Julius, is the son and heir who really doesn't care or so he pertains to be. When helping his friends find the killer of Brendan's father, he is threatened by a man with a knife. Audrey runs out in the road with an umbrella to help defend him after hearing the action. He does receive a cut to his stomach area and she helps him. She has followed her father, a doctor, for years and has his journal. She keeps the fever from taking his life and they spend time together. Feelings between them happen but all he wants is to be free and single, she wants to follow in her father's footsteps. Each have a change of heart and dreams just to get to their happily ever after. The killer is still out there so we need to read the next story in this series to get the answers. Can't wait. Would recommend to everyone this book and series. Absolutely fabulous.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Miss Gideon and the Incident is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the Reluctant Reckonings series and a delight from start to finish. Set in early 19th century England, it blends mystery and drama seamlessly with sharp wit and heartfelt moments, making it a truly fun and engaging read.

The MMC is irresistibly charming—witty, clever, and perfectly matched by the FMC’s quick intelligence and deep compassion. Their dynamic adds both warmth and sparkle to the story, elevating the mystery and keeping the pages turning. The emotional beats feel earned, and the characters’ interactions are as satisfying as the intrigue itself.

As book three in the series, this installment shines in how it continues to wrap and weave the lives of past protagonists into the narrative. Seeing familiar characters reappear and evolve makes the world feel rich and alive, and it’s captivating to follow how their stories intersect and unfold over time.

Overall, Miss Gideon and the Incident is a clever, charming, and immersive read that rewards both longtime fans of the series and readers who love historical mystery with strong character work. Highly recommended.

Miss Gideon and the Incident by C.N. Jarrett is a wonderful addition to an already delightful series, and it absolutely deserves all five stars. The heroine is a breath of fresh air, especially in the way she holds fast to the ideals her father instilled in her about patient care; her compassion and integrity make her incredibly easy to love. Watching the relationship between the main characters unfold is sweet, gentle, and deeply satisfying, with every small moment building toward a romance that feels both hard‑won and well‑deserved. This match is facing an uphill battle right from the start, but each hurdle they clear only makes it more compelling to read, and it is impossible not to cheer this duo on as they fight for their future together. The story balances heart, tension, and tenderness so well that it leaves a lingering sense of warmth long after the final page. This was a charming and easy historical romance with a nice dash of suspense. It starts with a bored lord who makes one careless decision and suddenly finds himself on the run, hunted by someone who wants him dead. I liked how Lord Julius Trafford begins as a foppish, slightly reckless hero, then slowly reveals depth, courage, and loyalty when it truly matters.

Audrey Gideon was a quiet standout for me. She’s practical, brave, and steady under pressure, and her determination to keep Julius alive made their partnership feel natural and believable. The danger forces them close, and the romance builds gently alongside the suspense—clean, sweet, and full of restrained longing. The story is fast-paced without being overwhelming, and the emotional growth feels earned.

Overall, this is a warm, enjoyable read with likable characters, mild intrigue, and a satisfying romantic arc. If you enjoy clean historical romances with adventure, forced proximity, and unexpected love, this is a great pick.

Miss Gideon is a healer. She is a visionary, daughter of a doctor that passed away unexpectedly, a scholar that reacts instantly to save the earl's son and puts the needs of the patient above everything, even her own heart.
Lord Julius Trafford is a loyal friend, dedicated heart and body to his friends, determined to help end the peril and find the baron's murderer.
I enjoyed reading this story. It is sweet and romantic, even though the characters are not in search of love and matrimony, but of justice and realizing a higher goal. However, fate has a different plan for the two main characters, that find in each other amd unlikely kindered spirit.
I am very much delighted by C.N.Jarrett 's books, and all the search for the Baron 's killer has actually brought me great delight. I cannot wait for the next book of the series, they are highly addictive.

A Happy Ending ? . . .

When Lord Julius Trafford agrees to help his friends solve a murder, he has no idea of the danger he will put himself and his father's ward in as they are forced to run for their lives! Miss Audrey Gideon ends up taking care of Lord Trafford when he is attacked and injured by an assailant. Lord Trafford insisted they were still in danger, so they fled to Lady Hays’s house where Miss Gideon could clean and stitch his wound. She had followed her physician father for years, had seen wounds and much worse, so she was capable of actually helping him with the current wound that throbbed with every breath he took. Will their time together encourage them to fall in love? Will the threat to her reputation by being alone with Julius even for a brief time force them to marry when she tells Lord Stirling what had happened? Or could they lose their lives over his foolish decision that got them in the middle of this trouble?

The mystery thickens
There are six suspects of Baron Filminster’s murder. After an attack against the current baron’s wife and the discovery of an old letter concerning an unknown heir to one of the suspects’ parents, the three friends have to step up their investigation. Lord Trafford, Julius, hatches a rather risky plan to discover the culprit, but things turn sour, and he is wounded by a stranger. His father’s ward, Audrey, has practised medicine with her father and stitches his wound. She also nurses him during the ensuing fever.
What will happen when their irregular situation without chaperone is discovered? And will they find out who is behind the violence? And what about these unresolved feelings between them?
I liked the nod to Giacomo Casanova at the beginning of each chapter.

While helping his friends solve the murder of Baron Filminster, Lord Julius Trafford is injured when his plan to out the murderer fails. Julius is found on the steps of his father’s townhouse. His attacker is foiled and he is rescued by Audrey Gideon, his father’s ward. To better ensure their safety while Julius is healing, they hide out in Aunty Gertrude’s house. This ruins Audrey’s reputation, but will she accept the marriage of convenience that Julius offers? This is a fun and exciting story. The mystery of the baron’s murder continues. There is a continuing mystery, danger, secrets, drama, a slippery villain, a marriage-wary hero, an intelligent caring heroine, and after much consideration, love and a happy ending.

I felt a little let down as there is a cliffhanger at the end, although the romance has a HEA. The MMC is flamboyant but probably only to spite his father who has become very stern. The FMC is a ward who only wants to practice medicine like her late father. When he is attacked while she is a witness, it necessitates her going into hiding with him to take care of his wound. Then they are both embroiled in the murder investigation of his best friend’s father. The first two chapters seem to be almost a repeat from the last book in the series, but it is understandable as you are now in an other person’s viewpoint. I have enjoyed this series and there seems to be more coming. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am giving this story 3.5 because of some mixed feelings I have about one of the main Characters. If you like stories about rakes changing to honourable gentlemen, this story is for you. I, personally, prefer stories where the hero is honourable and unselfish all the way… And that does not make Lord Trafford my favourite…

Miss Gideon is a strong, capable and wonderful girl who deserve only the best. I loved the way she is described. She is very likeable.

I did love the easy cameradery between our couple and how they came to know each other. And I find the story to be light and easy to read. I finished it rather quickly.

Julius is adamant about staying single for life with numerous liaisons and no wife EVER!!! He thought marriage made one indifferent to each other in the marriage.

His father, Lord Stirling was always busy with court business and no family time. A bad lesson to teach his son. Audrey was trained to be a healer by her father. Luckily, her skills save Julius' life. I fell in love with both main characters for their tenacity, strength, and integrity. It took Julius some time to wake up, but the lord and lady accepted Audrey immediately. Did they find the real killer???? Can't wait for the next book. Julius Trafford is attacked in front of his family home. Audrey Gideon, his father's ward, helps fight off the attacker and tends Julius' wound. Her father was an exceptional doctor and her dream is to follow in his footsteps. Julius is involved in finding the murderer of his friend's father, the Baron of Filminister. With Audrey by his side, disguised as a lad, Julius' investigation reveals the possibility of three suspects, but Audrey's reputation is in tatters. He wants to protect her, but is afraid of marriage. What will it take to change his mind? A clean romance. The murderer is still at large and the investigation continues in the next book.

Miss Gideon and the Incident is Book 3 in the Reluctant Reckoning by C N Jarrett. I enjoy reading Regency stories. Each book has an ending, but the murder happened in Book 2. Brendon's father was murdered and his close friend, Julius, along with Aidan are investigating who killed Brandon's father. The author writes excellent mysteries with a romance. This is Julius and Audrey's romance. I have believe that the books can be read as a stand alone, but, I feel that the reader will enjoy the books better when read in order. I am looking forward to reading book 4, Miss Bigsby and the Aristocracy Next Door. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Audrey Gideon has been trained as a healer by her father but the guild won’t accept a woman into their ranks. That doesn’t stop her from saving the life of her guardian’s son Julius or nursing him back to health. This book represents an installment in a murder mystery Julius and friends are trying to solve. I enjoyed the suspense and slow burn of the romantic relationship. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The revelations regarding Julius’ aversion to marriage due to his parents estrangement seems understandable but clearly he didn’t fully understand the nuances.

I do enjoy these books but they all have the same theme, when I started reading this book,I was positiveI had read it before and had to check the previous titles I had read. It did then change when the Heroine is compromised by being alone in a house with him for several days with only a servant in the house. She is tending Julius's wound after he was stabbed by an assailant and they are hiding in a house and nobody knows where she is and her reputation is ruined. will her Guardian throw her to the wolves, the scandal is bad. Will she be ruined for life and have move abroad escape the gossips?

I have enjoyed this series, even if honor and love at first sight are a bit exaggerated. The premise is simple through the series: one man in this particular telling, Lord Julius Stirling, who involves the entire set of comrades to help solve the current mystery, finding the person who killed his father and threatened his new wife. Together they investigate six possible men who could be responsible. One after another they eliminate them until the true culprit is found. The story flows well and the characters are likable. I wish I had a group of friends like these. I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

I always wondered what sort of woman would be able to capture Julius. He met his match in Audrey and from the start as they were forced to spend time together an invisible bond is formed, as, once again, the lady is forced into a compromised situation in order to do the right thing. Julius and Audrey’s chemistry is moving and poignant as Julius struggles to come to terms with his preconceived notions on marriage and realizes the error of his ways. The story takes us further to the conclusion to Ridley’s father/uncle’s murder and the wait to finalize that mystery will be interminable. I don’t have the words to fully describe how much I loved your story, but there was one thing I felt was missing. If you were to turn your story into a comic or webtoon, it would always stay at the top. As more people realize how real and immersive the story feels, they’ll search for your work even more and eagerly wait for each new chapter.

I say this because I truly love reading stories, and I’m also a commissioned artist. If you’d like, you can take a look at my work. I believe that if we work together, your stories could become top-listed very quickly. If you’re interested, let me know on IG at elsaa.uwu. I’d truly love to work with you.

The installment is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. Reading the previous books might make the story more coherent but does not hinder the overall understanding of the goings on.

For me, the story dragged some time despite the mystery. There was a lot of soul searching and repetitions. Also, allowances need to be made towards the context.

A calm read, with little surprises. 3.5 rounded to 4.
