Will Hennie is a young boy in an impossibly hopeless situation in rural America in the 1930's. Deprived of socialization and a normal childhood, his mother kicks him out when he is only eight-years-old. Before long, he finds an unusual home, and an unusual family where he has his first lesson in what love is. One day, Will finds himself homeless again with nowhere to go, and no one to turn to. Then he becomes a member of a family that society strongly frowns upon, but it was here that he was taught to be a man and discovered another type of love. Wherever he goes and whomever he meets, Will Hennie, with his big pure heart always leaves a lasting impression in the lives of the people he loves and those who love him. Against great adversities, a young boy becomes a man, who eventually becomes a household name.
Wow! This book was filled with powerful emotions for me! A little boy tossed away like trash but rescued by kind people who loved him and raised him into a polite and intelligent young man. He was nurtured by love from complete strangers. I was heartbroken by Will's story when it took a huge turn about half way through the book. Will then found himself alone and starting over. And once again, because of the kindness of strangers, he is brought back to life. This story shows how love and understanding and just lending a helping hand can make a world of difference in someone's life. Joy Redmond develops her characters so well. You are drawn into their lives and find yourself so involved with the story. It becomes so real! Emotional read for me. One minute I was sobbing; the next I was cheering on his joy. The fact that Redmond brought it further to life for me by adding a dog and a pet deer made it that much more special. An AWESOME reading experience!
Finding Will Jennie will make you laugh, cry, get madder than a wet when and make you want to throttle one of the characters. I didn't want it to end but then again, I never do. It is the first book in the Family Sins trilogy so I still have more to read. As always, I highly recommend these books. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
