I enjoyed this book. I love diving into the magical world the author has created. I was a little disappointed at the end of this one. Hopefully the third book will make me feel all better. :) I look forward to reading it!

Between the Birches: Harbinger is the second book in the BtB series by K. P. Roberson. This installment, picking up soon after book one ended, finds Beth and Grady battling Ja'azul and his evil minions that are trying to take over the world.

I have always felt that sequels are inherently difficult to pull off successfully. The audience wants to revisit the world they enjoyed in the first installment while still being surprised and entertained. It is a difficult feat to pull off and, for the most part, Roberson succeeds.

Most of the characters that survived book one are back. It is comforting to visit with them again. The locals from last time are also back although not all of them survive to the end of this book. To keep things interesting we are introduced to a whole group of new characters. In retrospect the story may have been stronger with a few less new characters.

This is a darker installment than Book 1. It is the gruesome deaths and the controversial ending that prevented me from enjoying this one as much as I did the first. However Roberson's prose is as elegant as ever and the world she has created came alive once again!
