Melanie Avalon is a SAG AFTRA actress living in Los Angeles, and author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller "The What When Wine Diet: Paleo and Intermittent Fasting For Health And Weight Loss." Melanie blogs at PaleoActress.com, and runs her youtube channel (youtube.com/c/melanieavalon) to further discuss her thoughts on Paleo, Intermittent Fasting, Wine, holistic health, and the science of diet.

Born and raised in the South, Melanie left high school early to attend the early entrance program at the University of Southern California (USC), during which time she interned for Jerry Bruckheimer, Julia Pistor, and Whitaker Entertainment at Walt Disney Studios. She received accolades for the highest GPA in the School of Theatre, the Louis Kerckhoff Prize for her paper "Charcot's Oppressive Hysteria: Vindicated Today?", and was a member of the Delta Kappa Alpha film fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society. She graduated Summa Cum Laude, and holds a Mensa card as insurance for the whole "blonde stereotype" thing.

In college, Melanie tried numerous fad diets and calorie counting to lose weight. After discovering the low carb world, she realized there was a science to body fat regulation. (Oh hey!) The subsequent years of self experimentation and research lead to her adoption of Intermittent Fasting (IF) and Paleo protocols. What started as mere weight loss techniques, ultimately became lifestyle changes for health and happiness!

Melanie now follows a Paleo, Intermittent Fasting lifestyle, with a nightly glass of wine! She credits her dietary discoveries for maintaining a camera-ready body in Hollywood, with no restriction whatsoever! Her dream is to encourage healthy weight loss techniques which support vibrant health and vitality!

She's probably right about everything, as most of the things she says in this book are consistent with what I've read about nutrition and exercise studies. (Current real studies- Not the old vaguely mythological things people repeat about food and exercise.) I withheld one star only because the statements are not footnoted/endnoted directly. Instead she has a bibliography at the end but that makes it difficult to verify individual claims. Also I really don't want to eat Paleo ... of course, that is not her fault.

Update from 2019: I give up, I'm eating more in the paleo-style now.

Well researched

I found this diet book to be well written and meticulously well researched. There are a number of beneficial recommendations in these chapters and most are helpful to the would be dieter as well as the long time dieter.
Especially helpful are the paleo aspects, the IF (intermittent fast) techniques, in other words - the what and when. However, although our author provides numerous benefits of wine consumption and its beneficial reveretrol, it can be harmful to some dieters. Some people are allergic to alcohol and can experience several negative side effects. So this book can be beneficial to most overweight individuals, but not all of them.

Sometimes the style of the writing was a tad bit repetitive and annoying, but overall great research and tips that are definitely making me want to try this out - she says it's so easy to get used to and has amazing results!

A good intro to paleo and intermittent fasting. Provides good information in a decent format (oh hey another "witty" parenthesized filler). She gets technical at times but in a way that if you don't have further education into his the body works, you still can keep up.

Audible Audiobook --

I ended up appreciating this book so much more than I thought I would in the first few chapters. Like the Konmari book, it combined and helped me put myself on a forward path for a lot of different things and it's contributing to my finally deeply researching and experimenting with intermittent fasting to being with.

I, also, love hearing Melanie talk about all of the roads she traveled to get to a lifestyle of paleo, intermittent fasting, and wine drinking. This isn't a paleo recipe book, so much as it's a book about considering all three of these things. Amazingly, she has while chapters dedicated solely to the nitty-gritty of exact science, cases (with names, dated, explanations) backing up all her information.

I love diet books because of all the nutrition and biology information they have, I'm not really going to try to eat the way she does (it's a bit extreme to my taste) but I loved the chapters where she explains about lypolisis, metabolism, inflammation, the way insulin works, etc in a very simple way and with analogies. also, the historical context used to illustrate present problems and all the research work, studies and experiments give her a lot of credibility. I really enjoyed the book and find her lifestyle interesting (but hard although the entire book emphasizes how easy it is).
