The one and only reason I picked this book was its title, because yes I love sushi and yes because I didn't know what "naked sushi" is.

It seems that I learned something from this book. Apparently there is a kind of modelling called "sushi modelling", which means there are models who are used as sushi plates, ie. People (I quess men in the majority) are eating raw sushi from the model's naked body. Is this thing legal? I did a quick search at the Google and it seems real and legal.

Anyway, back to the story, Pepper lost her job after she got caught having sex on the printer one night with a stranger who turned out to be a thief. After that her life changes completely. When she finds out that her boss has a reservation at a Japanese sushi restaurant, she decides to pose as a sushi model to be able to confront him, to tell what really happened and get her job back. The thief is also present eating sushi with her boss, FBI gets involved and in the end she doesn't seriously know what is going on and who is the bad guy.

The story was very much complicated at some points, the relationship between the two main characters was lacking depth and sometimes I was wondering if I was really reading a romance novel. But nevermind, at least I learned something.

Naked Sushi

The Characters

“Pepper”
Steve Raines

The Story

These two fall into screwing after 3 seconds of knowing each other (no, really he didn’t even have time to tell her his name) at her place of business and she ends up getting fired. That all happened in less than 19 pages.

I could not go on after that. Honestly I was bored. It seems to be a trend lately.

I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley

It is a shame but it has to be said, this novella disappointed me. The idea behind the story is interesting enough; geeky computer programmer works late and runs into a man she doesn’t know but assumes is a new colleague, in the copy-room. Next thing you know they’re all but naked and having sex only to be interrupted by the office manager. Pepper, the geeky girl, loses her job and goes to desperate lengths in order to get her job back. This includes lying all but naked in a restaurant where her former boss as well as the man she encountered in the copy-room, are eating sushi off her body. When it becomes clear that the mystery man is in fact a FBI agent named Steve trying to prove her ex-boss is up to his neck in illegal transactions, it takes very little for Pepper to become involved and get the opportunity of making her dream of being a spy come true.

This story-line might have worked very well in a full length novel. In a novella counting less than 90 pages it was just too much. Especially since this book is trying to be more than just a light-hearted and funny spy story. We are also in the middle of an erotic adventure and dealing with the traumatic backgrounds both Pepper and Steve are burdened with. The word count just wasn’t high enough to carry all these plot lines. The result is a story that can’t quite make up its mind as to what it is and doesn’t really satisfy on any level. Just when you’re getting all caught up in the tension of the spying the mood switches to an erotic encounter which in turn might suddenly become a rather dark look at either Pepper or Steve’s past.

For me this was a rather frustrating reading experience because I never got the opportunity to settle into the story. Whenever I started to get comfortable with and involved in what was happening on the page the story would change and I would have to adjust to what could almost be a different book. As a result none of the elements I normally enjoy in a book – the mystery, the love story, the erotica – had the opportunity to come to fruition, leaving me slightly confused and frustrated.

Like I said, in a longer book this set up might have worked very well. In fact, I would probably have enjoyed spending more time with Steve and Pepper because both of them, but especially our geeky girl, showed great promise as characters. This could have been a quirky and enjoyable read if it either had been longer or contained fewer elements. As it was it left me rather bewildered and dissatisfied.

Jina Bacarr writes some pretty spicy erotic for Harlequin. She also really likes to add a Japanese touch to her books, so I was really curious as to how the sushi figured into the story, and what other elements she brought to the table.

Pepper O'Malley is a geeky computer programmer who lost her job because she was getting some on the copier. To try to get her job back she takes her friends job as a sushi model in order to talk to her old boss.

Yes, there are such things as sushi models where people eat sushi off of the body of a naked chick.

(Uh...no thank you)

The copy room sex is hot, so at least she lost her job for a good cause, but after that the story gets a little out of hand. Jina's plot is a little too intricate to work well in a story that is only a little over 100 pages long. It really needed some more length.

But I have to admit, Pepper and Steve (The FBI/Copier Guy) have their moments, some spicy and some silly, so it gave the story some balance, if not levity.

Steve (The FBI Guy) is trying to flush out her boss for some money laundering he's doing through his business and Pepper gets to go along for the ride. It helps that she always wanted to work for the FBI/CIA. So the two of them are in close contact and sparks are flying all over the place because they are both...well...horny...and they can't keep their hands off each other.

This is not a short story to be taken seriously, it is one to read, enjoy and maybe get a few laughs from.

While I totally adored the characters in this spicy read, the writing style and the underdeveloped plot kept me from absolutely falling in love with it. I flew through this one in an afternoon, not wanting to put it down, yet when I finished, I felt myself looking for more from the storyline that just wasn't there.

Both Pepper and Steve were interesting characters with curious pasts. I really liked both of them and the witty banter between the two. I thought Pepper was a character that so many women can relate with easily.

The plot was really intriguing - who doesn't love a good spy story mixed with crimes, all wrapped up in a romance? I just felt that things moved along too quickly with too little of explanation for me to fully believe it. I wish this one was a little longer - since I feel just a bit more explanation would have done wonders.

With a title like Naked Sushi, I was intrigued from the get go. While this one wasn't everything I was hoping for, it still was quite the read. I am curious to read more from Jina Bacarr in the future.

Naked Sushi by Jina Bacarr
D-, blaze, mild kink, contemp

Pepper gets caught after a little copyroom nookie and is fired.  The stranger in the copy room manages to get away.  Turns out Steve, the stranger and nookie partner extraordinaire, is an FBI agent trying to dig up info on Pepper's ex-boss.  Pepper's always wanted to be a spy, so she decides to help Steve out.

This book boggled me on so many levels.  Pepper walks in and catches Steve trying to make copies of some of her boss's documents and he decides the only way to avoid having his cover blown is copy machine sex?  I can think of a few other options myself, but I guess since he had a bad case of the I've gotta have her nows I'll give him a little leeway. I can forgive his little bit of unprofessionalism. But it just keeps happening throughout the book. They just can't keep their hands off each other, no matter what's going on at the time. Temporarily stuck in a storage room while you wait for the bad guys to leave? Cue the tacky porn music...

Pepper is supposedly this nerdy girl who wears glasses and flannel shirts all the time and knows nothing about sexuality but one look at Steve and she's suddenly this smoking hot siren. She was ditzy, flaky, and quickly became annoying. And let's not forget that Pepper's always wanted to be a spy, so she becomes Steve's little shadow. But honestly she's following him around more for his magic fingers than his spy know-how.

This book's one saving grace was that it was short.

With a cover like Naked Sushi, it is pretty obvious that there will be sexytimes in store for Jina Bacarr’s spy-based novella. Unfortunately, Naked Sushi fizzled instead of sizzled for me. I am going to chalk that up to the writing style, it just did not gel with me. Further, the characters aren’t all that developed and I don’t know, I just feel disdainful toward the whole novella.

Not what I hoped

While most erotic fiction tends to lack a good storyline and is all about the raunchy sex, this book turned it around. The storyline was really enjoyable and had some substance. Unfortunately, it lacked the nitty, gritty, oh so desirable sex scenes that good erotic stories should have. The sexual tension was built up repeatedly throughout the story, but sadly left me still wanting something at the end.

Pepper is computer programmer who is working late one night and has to photocopy something, a task she’s not really familiar with. She finds a strange man in the copy room and Pepper suddenly finds herself having an out of character one night stand with him. However she accidentally sets off the alarm which means the encounter ends abruptly. Her lover escapes before they are caught but Pepper is not so lucky and she is fired for her indiscretion.

After that her reputation is ruined – no one will grant her an interview and she’s being badmouthed by her former office manager. Pepper stalks her former boss, the owner of the company to where he’s having lunch and gets herself a gig there as the naked sushi girl in order to beg for her job back. She isn’t successful but she does come across her copy room lover again and discovers that he is undercover FBI.

Pepper has always longed to be a spy – in fact she’s applied and gotten past the first round but has never gone any further. When she discovers that Steve is gathering information on her former boss, she decides that getting her job back isn’t an option after all and she vows to help him with his job instead. And that way she gets to spend more time with the deliciously sexy Steve, who also owes her big time after their time in the copy room was cut short.

I’m interstate visiting family indefinitely due to an emergency and I knew I wouldn’t be able to bring books with me so I loaded up my kindle with a few contemporary romances, easy things that I could read whilst having a break while my youngest is napping or in between visits to the local hospital. I read this one the first night I was here – it’s short, which is both good and bad. Good because I didn’t enjoy it very much but also bad because I might’ve enjoyed it more if it were longer and took the time to actually flesh lots of things out, such as the attraction between Steve and Pepper, Steve’s job and the case investigating Pepper’s boss, Pepper deciding to help and the end.

I feel as though this story had so much potential based on the blurb – I’m a big fan of undercover stories and this one seemed like it would be really funny and also hot but unfortunately for me, it wasn’t either of those things. Everything from the very first scene seems rushed – no time is taken to set up anything. Pepper and Steve are bonking against a photocopier mere minutes after meeting each other and I just can’t buy that at all. I couldn’t really tell what sort of character Pepper was – we received little information about her romantic history, her friends, etc and yet she finds herself having sex with a man she doesn’t know who she only met mere minutes ago and doesn’t know his name or even what he’s doing in the building. I found the naked sushi scenes pretty unnecessary to the plot and probably not worthy of being the inspiration for the title.

There’s a real lack of chemistry between Steve and Pepper and I think this is because everything with them feels so rushed. When two characters jump straight to doing the deed in the first chapter, you lose a huge chance to really build attraction and sexual tension and get the reader super invested in the two characters. Everything kind of skipped along and it felt like crucial scenes that really would’ve built both an attraction/relationship between Steve and Pepper and also the story regarding the FBI investigation into something much more detailed. Also Pepper had a really disturbing habit of “clenching/contracting her pubes” which I just found really distracting and weird and what even does that mean?

Unfortunately for me this one sounded great in theory but was very poor in execution. Sometimes a short story isn’t as quick and fun as it seems and you get the feeling that the author could’ve made a much better story if she’d taken the time to really nut out the story line and get it tight and also make sure the character attraction and growth was there. The ending was extremely weak and the epilogue really cheesy and neither did the story any favours.

Pepper is a very geeky girl, working in a job that can bore her to tears on some days. So when she comes across the hot guy in the copy room, late at night, making copies of her boss' classified documents she can't help herself. They get caught having sex in the copy room and Pepper loses her job. Determined to get it back, she goes undercover as a naked sushi model for her boss' business meeting. And the hot guy from the copy room just happens to be one of the guys at the meeting! Turns out he's an FBI agent undercover, who is trying to expose her now ex-boss for less than savory business practices. She decides to help him, in the hopes of resuscitating her failed ambitions to work for a government agency that she thought were long since dead. Can they keep their hands off each other long enough to catch the crook? Will they find something more than just hot sex in the person they least expected to connect with?

This is going to be a short review because I have very clear and concise opinions on this book. I kind of think it was pretty horrible. I like it when a book knows what it is and where it's going. This one tried a little too hard, never deciding between erotica or a plot. It tried to have both, but couldn't really manage it all that well. Pepper starts out kind of likeable. That goes out the window immediately after she and the random guy have sex. She gets fired and really thinks she can get her job back and seems almost surprised she lost it in the first place. Okay, whatever. She also goes from freaky-smart, super geeky girl to giggly, sex-obsessed and empty-headed fluff ball. And we're supposed to believe that she has a shot at being employed by the FBI. Also, FBI-guy is a serious douchebag about his encounter with Pepper. He has to be the least stealthy, least covert undercover FBI agent ever.

The whole Naked Sushi thing barely takes up any of the plot at all and really is just a minor event. The sex was boring and almost straight-up, porn type sex with nothing that interesting or great about it. Overall, this was a (thankfully) short, time-wasting read. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone and I definitely won't be reading it again. A true disappointment. It only gets as much credit in the ratings as it does, because I was able to finish it and it didn't drag unnecessarily. It needs to go home, sober up and get some more depth to its characters. Then we'll go on another date!

VERDICT: 1.5/5 Stars

This review may contain a few spoilers.

For this review and more visit my blog

Sometimes there is no easy or gentle way so say something so I am going to be blunt. There was nothing about Naked for Sushi I liked. Nothing. I know that sounds harsh and that many people are thinking there must have been one thing I liked about it, but unfortunately I cannot come up with one. I just didn’t like this book.

The plot was all over the place. It was one of the most unbelievable books I have ever read. I get that most books have elements of the unbelievable about them but this was on another level. The characters, storylines, dialogue, situations, nothing was believable. It was all just so weird and I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading at times.

The writing style was not for me at all. There was nothing actually wrong with the writing itself but I had issues with the style. The word ‘pube’ was used far too often and it is not an attractive word at all. There were moments like these:

‘Coaxing my pubic hairs to flutter like daisy petals bowing to an insistent breeze.’

Um…what? It is such a horrible, cheesy sentence revolving around an icky word.

The characters were no better. Pepper was one of the most annoying main characters I have come across. Steve had no personality and seemed to think it was ok to continuously grope Pepper even though he was also sexing up his boss. The FBI boss lady was insane. It is implied that she sleeps with all her male employees, she (also) gropes people without permission. She comes across as a sex crazed maniac who flashes her boobs/sleeps with/gropes everyone in a sad attempt to control her male employees. There is not one sane character to be found in this at all.

The romance was flaky and built on no actual affection or admiration. I couldn’t really see any chemistry between them and it seemed like Steve kept on manipulating Pepper with the promise of sex but he never put out.

Clearly Naked for Sushi was not for me and I cannot recommend it.

I don't know whether I like this book or not till now. That is why I gave it 3.5 stars. Every time I say the book is good, something happens followed by no explanation so I get lost again. For that I decided to make pros and cons list to see if I like him more or hate him more.

What I liked first. The plot is so interesting, erotic with the touch of thriller, what's not to like. The characters are so interesting, fun. I felt I could relate pepper in her determination to get her job back, we all will do anything to get our jobs back. Steve was gorgeous and hot, I liked him, but I needed more of him. I don't know I wasn't satisfied by his scenes in the book; I wanted more scenes and more chapters from his point of view. Also the erotic scenes were hot. The most amazing thing I liked in this book that I've finished it in only two hours, I missed small books. I liked all those stuff; let's see what I didn't like then.

The plot wasn't meant to be a novella. Some plots needs a lot of explanation, as this one. The thriller part needed more time and needed more explanation to be good. I felt that the book was rushed, missing a lot of things needed to take more time and more words. Ugh, the first scene in the book was a total disaster. Why on earth I'll do sex with someone I don't know who was photocopying my boss' information on computer? Was Pepper that naïve? And then she was sad that she got fired?! That is so wrong, and the scene lost its hotness because I was so shocked how it happened that I didn't concentrate what was happening. The last thing I hated was the naked women who men ate from them…….. Disgusting. I would never imagine anyone eating, for the sake of eating, while his plate is naked woman. I get when the authors made a chocolate scenes (its hot) because it is meant to spice the sex between two lovers, but eating my meal from a naked girl, that is so weird.

Overall the book was going to be good, amazing maybe, if the author wasn't in-caged by words count.

Naked Sushi is a fast reading novella whose story has a funny premise. Pepper is a computer programer who, one night she is working late, finds out she's not alone at the company. When she gets to the copy-room, she meets who she thinks is the new game designer and she ends up having sex with him right there. Unfortunately the nasty Ms. Sims arrives and interrupts them and he runs leaving her literally with her pants down...

Unemployed and badmouthed in the area, Pepper cannot get a new job so she takes her friend's place as a sushi model at the restaurant where she works because she knows her ex-boss is going there to lunch that day. Her plan is to beg for her job back, which is not that easy when one considers the fact that being a sushi model means getting practically naked lying on a table and having man eating sushi straight from her... Her plan gets even more difficult to put into practise when she realizes the man standing next to her ex-boss is the man in the copy-room. Who turns out not to be a game designer but an FBI agent looking for incriminating clues against her ex-boss. Pepper ends up proving to be precious help and who knows if that's not the start of a brilliant new career?

It's a funny story that, because it's small, doesn't allow a lot of character development. I could have liked it more if the characters libido didn't manifest at the most incredible and inconvenient times...

I reviewed this at MustReadBooksOrDie with my friend Shelley!

Court: Naked Sushi. Interesting concept? Hot cover? Check and check. Of course we wanted to read this one, because a) it looked fun and b) she gets a job being the plate for naked sushi after getting fired for having sex at work. Ris-to-the-que. :) Sign us up! Shel: Yes...the cover was steamy!

Court: The novella, and yes it is a novella so it is a very quick and sexy romp through this love story...but it was somewhat a little over the top in the comedy department...so those parts were a little more parody than rom-com. I wasn't sure what to do with that. But the way these two meet is very interesting. And unbelievable...and HOT! Shel: Yes, Courtney, I thought the funny bits were a bit over the top and I couldn't really find my feet with this novel but some may like it.

Court: So for me this one scored major points for sexiness while maybe losing a few points with execution. Being that it is a novella though did not require me to invest a significant amount of time so I recommend for the simple entertainment factor. It isn't a serious story, and definitely shouldn't be taken as such. :) Shel: True..this is 100% fantasy and any attempt at reality has to be suspended at the first tap of your reading device.

Courtney: 3 Stars Shelley: 2 1/2 Stars

Ok, this one from Cosmo's Red-Hot Reads was definitely more wacky than hot. Frankly, anything remotely resembling hot seemed more reckless than hot and spicy. And, while I tend to like funny sexy reads (a la Christina Lauren and Alice Clayton) this one fell on the wacky (think Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy) side of the humor line. But, in reading the intro, you're prepped for it. The author clearly states that this story was inspired by her love of James Bond films (and I'm thinking she's talking about the Roger Moore era, which tends to be a bit more on the silly side than his predecessors and successors take on 007). And, actually, as wacky as our heroine, Pepper O'Malley is, it works. She's just goofy enough, but not certifiable, that you kind of like her and root for her, without moving to straight all out Donald Duck annoying. I gotta hand it to the author on this one...for the Red-Hot Reads line, of which I've read many, this one is definitely different and totally breaks conventional formulas. I definitely will look for more works from this author, and kinda hope to hear more about Pepper. She's definitely has enough legs to her (no pun intended) to be built into a series.

Please leave comments for Petra's 4 sweet pea review at http://mrsconditreadsbooks.com/index....

She blushed “I got promoted at the restaurant.”
“Are you a cook?” I asked, imagining myself chopping up raw fish and cutting off a finger.
“I’m a sushi model.”
“A what?”
“Men eat raw sushi off my naked body”
“Jesus fricking Christ.” I flipped out at the thought of having to take off my clothes to get my job back.

The best word to describe this book is fun. I love Pepper’s personality but I do find it highly unlikely that a FBI agent would stop what he was doing to bend her over the photocopier ! However the book is just pure escapism, real life – no way but a sexy easy read when real life is getting you down – totally. And you do get a WHOLE new perspective of Japanese food and especially saki!!!

Pepper O’Malley makes one rash, albeit sexy, mistake and gets fired from her job as a computer programmer. Turns out, her mistake, the hottie she had sex with in the copy room, doesn’t even work for the company. She needs an income and is determined to get her job back, but she soon finds out that hottie and her boss are both hiding secrets. Now, Pepper has some decisions to make. Will they include the copy room hottie?

This story started out promising, but quickly descended into the Dumbass Woman from ClichéLand. The writing is mediocre, the characters shallow and the plot idiotic. The hot scenes are pretty good though. I rolled my eyes way too much for this to be an enjoyable read for me.

I supposed this could be a cute little quick read while at the doctors office or something. Its nothing I would really waste much time or money on. Hot nerdy girl does stranger in copy room of her work? Then gets naked and lets men eat off of her to ask her old boss for her job back? Really? The interactment between the two main characters was stilted and forced into being sexy, yet failed. The whole book was just transparent, uninteresting and forced. If you have something better to read, do it. Don't waste time on this one.

Naked Sushi, oddly enough despite the very thin and very ridiculous plotline, was fun, fast and entertaining read. The characters were likable, the wild shenanigans and oddball situations were funny and the dialogue and inner monologues were quirky at best. It does fall short on execution when it comes to being a full blown romantic comedy. There was a lot of background info about the characters that wasn't really necessary to the main story. If you just want a fun, fast read then this one is it.

I had such high hopes..... There is a story here, at least the bones of one, but I don't believe it was suited for a short story.

The characters are undeveloped. The story is rushed and feels jumpy, almost like reading a cartoon, except the pictures are missing. There is not enough context to build on.

It really makes me sad, because the premise of the story is cute and could have been worked into something credible. As it is, it is out in left field and although the promise is there, the end product is not.

This one wasn't my favorite. Though it had a good premise, I believe the shortened format was just not strong enough to support the story. It was a light, quick read, but I could see so much possibility for a longer book, I was disappointed. It wasn't badly written, just constrained by the format. I liked the characters, I loved the premise, the book was sensual, and the conclusion satisfying. I guess I'm just not a gfan of the format.

Ugh, I had high hopes for this book. It seemed like a fun story but I just wasn't into it. I didn't care for the character at all and the story just seemed unreasonable to me (the main character has sex with a random stranger in the copy room of her office and then is surprised with she gets caught and gets in trouble).
