Tiger v. Jack: Golf's Great Debate

Rate this book
SI golf writer and author of Tiger & Phil, Bob Harig's Tiger v. Jack, an examination of the greatest argument in golf—who was better—exploring the records, rivalries, statistics, and context of their illustrious careers, including the intangibles that made them both icons.

When Jack Nicklaus stunningly won the 1986 Masters for his 18th major championship victory, it was a reminder of the greatness of a golfer who had done so much. The major title – six years after his last – brought into focus again the dominance of his career. At the time, nobody was close to him in major wins and the idea of anyone getting within miles of Nicklaus’ major record let alone match or overtake him seemed, frankly, preposterous.

And yet, there was a kid who was just 10 years old when Nicklaus won that last major. Tiger Woods was already thinking about Jack. He would put his accomplishments on a wall by age and try to beat those feats. Eventually, he put Nicklaus’ 18 major titles in his sights, and for the better part of a decade was on pace to match or exceed the record, a remarkable thought itself. The fact that he came up short doesn’t diminish the chase.

In Tiger v. Jack, Bob Harig explores and compares the two legends in a lively examination of the greatest argument in golf—who was better, Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods—exploring the records, rivalries, statistics, and context of their illustrious careers, including the intangibles that made them both icons. They both had their moments of brilliance and dominance. What we’ve seen from Nicklaus and Woods is likely to never be duplicated, all the more reason to celebrate it.

I grew up watching and idolizing Tiger, and have vivid memories of watching his dominance in the early 2000s. So it’s obvious that I think he’s the greatest, and I do think the stats and narratives in this book back it up. But I also came out of this book with a greater appreciation for Jack, as well as Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, and Walter Hagen. So I really liked it, it acted just as much of a history of the greats on top of a comparison of the two best we’ve ever seen.

━━━━━━━

Author Bob Harig's "magnum opus" begins with a Tiger win in June 2012 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Awaiting behind the green was none other than the Golden Bear himself, the founder, also the golf course designer, with a knowing grin and a hearty handshake. And a look that was one of amazement, but also acceptance.

"He had to rub it in my face right here, didn't he?" the legendary Jack Nicklaus would joke later that day.

Mutual Respect.
Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods, himself, would later remark when asked about Nicklaus, "First of all, he's the greatest champion that ever lived." Then adds, "He's been the benchmark for every player that's ever played the game."

For his part, Nicklaus commented during the 1996 Masters, "He's (Woods) absolutely the most fundamentally sound golfer that I've seen at almost any age." Then later adds, "He reminds me a little bit of what I used to do."

It was during the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla won by Tiger with 18 under par, that the Golden Bear would use the very words the great Bobby Jones once uttered during the trophy presentation ceremony at the 1965 Masters won by a certain Jack Nicklaus, with 17 under:

"He plays a game with which I am not familiar."

"Tiger v. Jack: the journey"
Bob Harig moves along with a scintillating, historic narrative on the exploits and achievements of golf legends, mainly vis-a-vis the rise of Jack, and also of the young master, Tiger ━ Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, Tom Watson and many more.

The Majors.
Then the author enlightens readers on how and why the U.S. Amateur Championship was regarded as a major golf championship for over 100 years, alongside the British Amateur, U.S. Open, and Open Championship, a foursome of tournaments which evolved to the present-day majors:
The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship (British Open).

The Birth of Tiger Mania.
The 1997 Masters witnessed the birth of the global phenomenon called "Tiger Mania," marking a seismic shift in golf when 21-year-old Tiger Woods won his first major by an unprecedented 12 strokes over an elite field, themselves golf champions in their own right.

Paired with Tiger in that Saturday's third round at Augusta National, Scottish champion Colin "Monty" Montgomerie scoffs before the round. "There's more to it than hitting the ball a long way, and the pressure's mounting more and more. I've got more experience, a lot more experience, in major championships than he has..."

After the round, Monty eats crow, as would many in the elite field do for years to come. "I'm probably the reason he did what he did. I'd just witnessed something very special. I thought I shot a very solid 74, until I lost to him by nine shots. I think he was 60, 70 yards ahead of me all day..."

Tiger Mania was born!

// _____Review Spotlight:

The Legend whose achievements we read about in awe and admiration
v.
The Legend who razzle-dazzled, and brought tens of millions worldwide to the game of golf!

The tens of millions for whom Bob Harig writes his book. Yes, we, the golf aficionados, the weekend warriors, the spectators, all lucky enough to have been born in the Tiger era. Before our own eyes, up close, that awe-inspiring club speed with the full body turn, that high-pitched, solid crack of a cannon shot never before heard, with the zinger sailing endlessly 50, 60, 100 yards beyond everyone else's best shot.

We went to tournaments and built up television audiences. We played golf for the first time. Then played some more.

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger! ━ In the hole!_____ //

The Tiger Slam.
In 2001, Tiger completed what is now known as the “Tiger Slam.” By winning the Masters that year, he became the first and only golfer in the modern era to hold all four professional major championship titles (the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship) at the same time.

Beyond the Tiger Slam, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods both achieved Career Grand Slams (winning each major at least once in a lifetime) a total of three times, a feat unequaled by any other player.

Then you have the "Hogan Slam" which refers to Ben Hogan’s historic 1953 season, where he won three major championships in a single calendar year: The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open (Open Championship).

The Impregnable Quadrilateral (1930), when Bobby Jones won all four major tournaments of his era in a single calendar year: U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, British Open, and British Amateur.

Tiger saves the best for last.
At the 2019 Masters, 43-year-old Tiger Woods completed a historic comeback to win his 15th major title and fifth Green Jacket, his first major victory since 2008. Quite an emotional finish, which he shared with his mom, Tida, his children, Sam and Charlie ━and the world.

Golf records, the final say.
Yet Jack Nicklaus holds the all-time record with 18 professional major championships, which bests Tiger's 15. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, won 82 PGA Tour events, tied with Sam Snead for the all-time record.

// Spoiler alert! //

Conclusion.
Bob Harig concludes, ━and most would agree:

Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golf champion of all time.
And Tiger Woods is the GOAT, the greatest golf player of all time.

"...So let the amazing discussion continue", Bob Harig goes further.
"A truly great debate to be celebrated...!"

When golf fans are debating who is the greatest golfer of all time, two names are usually mentioned - Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. While the two golfers played in different eras of the game, their accomplishments are well known and constantly compared. This book by Bob Harig digs deep into their careers and their games to provide his opinion on the debate that many agree on one thing - no matter who you pick, both of them are head and shoulders above everyone else.

The first and last chapter are perfect bookends to the debate. The first chapter covers the 1986 Masters tournament when Jack made a huge charge on the back nine on Sunday to become the oldest winner of the Masters at age 46, good for his 18th major championship. The last chapter is about the 2019 Masters, when Tiger won his 15th major at age 43 after a lengthy drought from majors due to injuries, most notably several back surgeries.

Between those chapters, a reader will learn about the best aspects of each golfer’s game, their first major tournament win, how their career trajectories played out and how they came to be the best of their eras. Harig goes beyond counting wins in majors and PGA wins to provide in-depth information on both golfers. One example of this that I really enjoyed was how both men would intimidate their opponents before teeing off on the first hole. They knew how to exploit any fear or doubt their opponents had which would result in those golfers either trying too hard or making mistakes they normally would not make. This description was very interesting.

There is information on legendary golfers whose marks first Jack, then Tiger, would eventually shatter. Information on Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and Ben Hogan give a good history of how the four major tournaments became a very important part of a golfer’s career. The sections on each man’s accomplishments outside of just winning majors were also very good. Also interesting was a discussion on how each man became involved in the police of golf during their times - Jack on the PGA’s policy that favored club pros instead of those on the PGA tour, Tiger on the emergence of the rival LIV golf league.

Other golfers, broadcasters, and golf personalities, all from both eras, were included in Haig’s analysis. The last sections before the 2019 Masters where Harig breaks down each man’s game (putting, driving, bunker play, etc), the quality of other players at the time and the size of the field during their time and other statistics, Harig makes his decision and lays it out well. This is an excellent book for those wanting more information on their golfer they choose in this debate.

I wish to thank St. Martin’s Press for providing a copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own.

Who is the greatest golfer of all time? For most fans, that debate ultimately comes down to two names: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. In Tiger V. Jack, Bob Harig takes a deep dive into both of their legendary careers in an effort to reach a definitive answer. Along the way, he also examines other great figures in golf history, including Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, to help place Nicklaus and Woods in proper historical context. Harig eventually arrives at his conclusion on who deserves the title of greatest golfer ever. Who did he choose? You will have to pick up Tiger V. Jack to find out.

Overall, I felt this was a solid and well researched attempt to compare the careers of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Harig brings a great deal of experience to the discussion and supports his arguments with plenty of facts and statistics. I especially enjoyed his side explorations into other all time greats, which added depth and perspective to the debate. One aspect of the book I did not care for was its tendency to jump around in time rather than exploring each career in a strictly linear fashion. Even so, the book offers a strong and engaging look at two of the greatest golfers the game has ever seen. I really enjoyed this book and the stories / vignettes that shares with the reader.

Sports and books like this are great because it takes us back in time, allows us to debate, and try to assign greatness. Golf allows us to do this better than other sports because it is an individual game. We can control for things and try our best to assign the title of greatest. This book does a great job of laying the case for both men and allow the reader to decide.

Chapters 10 through 15 were great and showcased how each owned their era of golf and why this comparison is so hard to do. As someone that only heard stories of Jack from my dad but got to witness Tiger’s greatness, they helped paint a picture of why this comparison is so hard to begin with.

I also enjoyed the layout of Chapter 16 that took all the different elements of golf and tried to assign a “winner” in each section. I liked how the author broke it down to little things that I wouldn’t have thought of… Great book for Father's Day.

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!!!

As a very casual golf fan, I enjoyed reading and learning more about several key players in the golf world throughout the years. It is fascinating to see the numbers presented for the individual wins, misses and more! There are so many factors that go into the Tiger v. Jack discussion/debate and I enjoyed reading about what they were thinking and feeling while experiencing some of the biggest moments of their careers! It was also cool to hear from individuals who were there as competitors, fans, journalists and more when they were witnessing history. I did find some of the anecdotes and quotes were repeated throughout the book and while it made sense to include them in multiple chapters, it slowed down the pace of the book a bit for me.

This book would make a great gift for avid and engaged golf fans, especially those that have followed any part of Jack and/or Tiger's careers!

A thoroughly enjoyable read. As something of a golf historian, I’m not sure I learned anything particularly new, but for those who haven’t closely followed the careers of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, the prose will be both engaging and enlightening. Having all the facts and figures gathered in one place makes for a meaningful comparison, and the conclusion—where the two are measured side by side—is especially effective.

You can tell this book was written by someone who truly loves the sport. As someone who knows little about golf, I still found it fascinating to read about two giants of the game. My rating is more personal than a reflection of the book content. I highly recommend this to anyone who had an interest in golf.

A well organized and reasoned comparison of the state of professional golf eras of Jack and Tiger. Enough statistical number crunching to satisfy any golf nerd. You may end up changing your mind, or not, but Harig will force you to think about the question--Tiger or Jack who is the greatest ever? Greatest golfer? Greatest winner? Greatest Major winner?
