I received a free copy of this book from the author, via the LibraryThing website. An honest review was requested.
“ABC: A Mini Monster Alphabet Book for Young and Old” by Tom Skinner is rather unique within the preponderance of ABC books for children. For starters, the author uses cute, cuddly, and totally non-threatening mini monsters to associate with each letter.
Next, his rhymes (alphabet books always rhyme; it’s an unwritten rule) are filled with puns, more likely to be enjoyed by the adult reading the book to the child. The puns are all in the listed names the mini monsters like, such as: Adam Zapel, Anne Teak, Barb Dwyer, Bill Board, Curt Zee, and Candi Barr. A two year old is not going to “get” those, but they may help keep the adult entertained!
The third, and most unusual, thing that sets this book apart from other ABC books is that the names assigned to each monster, although they may sound like made-up names, are actual, legitimate words, which the author defines in a glossary at the end of the book. I had noticed that a couple of the names were words I recognized, but I was very surprised to learn that ALL the names have a real meaning. This is, again, something a two year old won’t care about, but it will certainly enhance the vocabulary of the adult doing the reading.
I would suggest this ABC book is sufficiently different from any other that it should most definitely be a part of every child’s book selections.
