Our Hiroshima-based spirit hunting team faces a ghostly grudge more vicious than ever before...
When the Abnormal Disaster Unit receives a call for backup from a neighboring town, they send Misato, Ryouji, and Hirose as a party of three to respond. The overview of the case is A haunted kagura mask has disappeared. To deduce the mystery, they turn to Yukiko—a college student researching Hiroshima-style kagura dance. However, when a suspicious man wearing the missing mask attacks Yukiko’s father, the police get involved. Thus begins a chaotic whirlwind of incidents, all leading back to the kagura mask’s influence. The mask slowly sneaks up on them, whispering sweet promises…
“Then, why should thou not hope to become a demon?”
This volume also includes “The Flower Thief’s Favor,” a prequel set amid the fluttering sakura petals of spring.
This is the best one so far. The relationship between the two main characters gets stronger as does Misato's relationship with Shirota. This volume had really dark themes of suicide, revenge and self loathing as well as feeling boring and normal when surrounded by exceptional people. The main case was not completed and the volume ended on a cliffhanger so I can't wait for the next installment!
So glad to have these two back! This time, though, we see things a lot from the perspective of Hirose, Misato's high school friend who had been transferred to Misato's division. We can see that he's feeling sheer jealousy that Misato's now closer to Ryouji, but he's also held back by the thought that Misato and he were living in completely different worlds—and Misato's world he shared with Ryouji, not with Hirose.
Their opponent right now is really nightmare material. However, in portraying the possessed kagura mask, we can also feel the writer's love towards the traditional art form. I had to Google what a kagura mask of a female demon looks like, though, and... well, I don't want to meet one that is possessed by evil and is moving around by itself!
Another thing I like about OnTen is that even though it deals with tales of the supernatural, it doesn't forget about realistic details such as, unfortunately, bureaucracy. It is frustrating how the effort of Misato and Ryouji to combat the demon was hampered by red tapes and police procedures, but that's how it would be like even for demon slayers, I guess... especially if they work for the government.
The story continues to the next volume, though. It's got to be here soon!
My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. If not, I respect your opinion. This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.
This one was awful! The Hirose character is an annoying, petty crybaby. I hope he is either killed off or transferred. The whole book is incredibly repetitive. This is book 4, we KNOW why Misato and Rouji are who they are, I do not need to be reminded constantly. This whole book is depressing, self-pitting, and life is so unfair over and over. Yes, life is shitty sometimes, move on and make the best out of it. These characters need to stop comparing themselves to each other; we are all different, stop trying to be like someone else, and be yourself. Sorry, this volume was painful! SO MUCH INFO DUMP!!!!
They’re battling an evil Kagura mask and big feelings (insecurity, self doubt and sadness). I enjoy the mix of Japanese culture, mental health and ghost/exorcism adventure. I think the series might end with book five and I’ll miss these characters. It’s light BL (bromance). I count it as BL because the deepest emotional relationship in Misato and Ryoji’s lives are with each other. Get emotional guys!
The story isn’t complex but I enjoy it a lot. Looking forward to the next volume. Hoping that the author decides to keep the series going.
