She swore she’d never forgive him. He never stopped loving her.
Laird Evans has it brilliance in court, powerful family ties, and a future paved in gold. But something is missing—the career he truly wants and the girl he let go.
Fenella Baxter’s modeling career is fading fast, and she’s out of time. She’s sworn off regrets until a surprise run-in with Laird leads to one reckless, tequila-soaked night. Now he’s back, hotter than ever, and determined to make amends.
While old feelings resurface, Fenella lands a contract that could revive her dream career. But her new boss hides more than charm. He’s manipulative, obsessive, and holds a secret that once tore her and Laird apart.
As her star rises, the danger closes in. And choosing the wrong path this time could destroy everything.
Old wounds. New lies. And a love that never really ended.
The story of Laird Evans and Fenella Baxter is full of miscommunications, lies, conspiracies, and dangers. Nothing is what it seems, not what happened in the past neither what happens in their present. They most overcome the challenges thrown their way if they want to be in each others life forever.
A book of this lenght I should have finish it in one sitting. However, I found my self putting it down constantly. It took a while to get a hold on me, and for me to connect with the characters. The FMC's character bother me too much. The fact that all her decisions were based on a simple event of her past and based on another person. I did loved the MMC, his character, jealousy, possesivenes, and his internal struggles, it was perfect. I felt the story was prolonged too much circulating in the same circumstances over and over again. I don't mind the word "babe", but it was overused in each spicy encounter. I started to think that the book was more focus on the spice than the plot.
However...., The last 20%... I was worried about wanting to read the second book. After the last 20%, I NEED to know what happens next. The mysteries that start to unfold, the discovery of the conspiracies, and the lies, the misunderstanding, everything happens on that last 20%. It leaves with a taste that what comes next is a full set of dangers, and of deeper things that no one could expect. I couldn't put the book down once I reach this point, and I am glad I pushed through.
This was a miss for me. I found the characters to be self absorbed and shallow. I know the MC loves her. In a kind of stalkery way ... but I felt like it was for the wrong reasons. No depth. No growth. The smut was thrown in and weird times. It was smut just have smut.
It's perfect for those that want insta love and one page of story and 5 pages of smut in just about every chapter.
Syanna Rose’s "Winning My Ex-Crush" is a heartfelt second-chance romance that perfectly captures the messy, magnetic pull between two people who never truly stopped loving each other. It’s equal parts tender, dramatic, and addictive - a story about old wounds, unfinished love, and the courage it takes to try again.
When I first picked this book up - I couldn't stop turning pages. The story keeps you hooked from start to finish, balancing heartfelt romance with the thrill of danger and redemption.
Laird Evans, our MMC, seems to have everything - a sharp legal mind, powerful family connections, and a career built for success. But behind the polished image lies a man haunted by the one person he let go: Fenella Baxter. Fenella’s once-glamorous modeling career is fading, and she’s desperate for a break. When an unexpected reunion with Laird turns into a tequila-fueled night of confessions and sparks, the past she thought she’d buried suddenly comes rushing back.
I have to admit at first I found Fenella's character to be a bit immature - I mean who practically builds a career out of the belief to impress the guy who broke her heart once, but as I progressed with the book I realised it was much more than that. I could understand why she made her choices - it might feel like coming from an immature heart but it's more like she wanted to prove that she is nothing less and that she is capable enough of doing anything she wants and I could relate to that particular point about her so much.
Their rekindled connection is passionate but complicated. As the tension builds, Fenella and Laird are forced to confront not only their painful history but also the choices that could destroy their second chance. Rose writes with warmth, emotional honesty, and just the right touch of suspense. I absolutely loved the plot twists and the suspense that this book brought along - it kept me hooked till the end. And can we talk about the cliffhanger at the end? - now I am eagerly waiting for book two of the series.
Winning My Ex-Crush is the kind of book that leaves you smiling, aching, and believing in second chances.
Okay, this book completely messed with my emotions — in the best way possible. I picked up Winning My Ex-Crush thinking it’d be a fun, spicy romance, but Syanna Rose hit me with so much more than that. For a debut, this was seriously impressive.
The story follows Fenella and Laird, childhood best friends who had that sweet, innocent bond… until one night in high school when everything fell apart. Laird broke her heart on prom night, saying she wasn’t his type — and honestly, I felt that sting right along with her. Fast forward a few years, Fenella’s a successful model trying to move on with her life, until she runs into Laird again — the last person she ever wanted to see. One reckless night changes everything, and suddenly all those buried feelings come rushing back.
The chemistry between them? Insane. Every interaction is loaded with tension, sarcasm, and a ton of unspoken history. It’s one of those “hate you but can’t stop wanting you” kind of dynamics that keeps you turning the pages way past bedtime. At first, I didn’t love Fenella. It felt like her world revolved around Laird — and honestly, I just wanted to shake her. But as the story went on, I started to really admire her. You can see her growing, learning to value herself, and finding her strength outside of her relationship. Laird, though… he’s complicated. Sweet, intense, sometimes infuriating — but he feels real. They both do.
What I didn’t expect was how emotionally layered the book would be. It’s not just about romance and spice (though the spice is seriously hot). Syanna Rose also touches on heavy topics like bullying and harassment in the workplace, and she does it with care. It gives the story depth and makes you root for Fenella even harder.
The writing flows so easily, and the pacing feels natural. I loved the dual timeline — seeing their past and present side by side makes their story hit even harder. By the time I reached the end, I was fully invested. The ending had me sitting there like, “Wait… that’s it?!” I need the next book now.
Fenella Baxter catches her boyfriend cheating, which leads to an impulsive reaction of her going to a club despite her having an early morning shoot. There, she accidentally stumbles upon her childhood best friend and crush, Laird Evans, which turns into a wild night for both of them. She wanted revenge: to leave him as he left her seven years ago, to humiliate him as he humiliated her, but when she finally meets him again, she can’t stop herself from falling for him all over again.
“Winning My Ex-Crush” by Syanna Rose is a romantic suspense story set in New York that revolves around Fenella Baxter and Laird Evans and their friendship and relationship over the years.
Personally, I didn’t quite like Fenella much because her whole world revolved around Laird. She became a model just to show him she was his type, and her entire career seemed to be built around him. On the other hand, Laird is sweet and always supportive of Fenella as her best friend, though he too lashes out when things get hard. Both of them have their flaws, but that’s what makes them real, raw, and perfectly imperfect.
The story starts out great, alternating between both their perspectives in two timelines, one being high school and the other present day. But halfway through, when they finally find each other again, everything starts revolving around intimacy. It becomes frustrating when every alternate chapter turns into a spicy scene, and the story stops progressing. However, the book does address major issues like bullying and sexual abuse at work.
Overall, this book stands out for tackling serious themes and portraying raw, flawed characters, though it has some drawbacks. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy highly spicy romantic suspense stories.
A second chance, childhood friends to enemies to lovers, this book was a messy, chaotic read, ngl. But I loved reading it!
A story between a lawyer and a model, I loved Laird & Fenella's characters. Laird had this emotionally unavailable but still obsessed vibe going on, which worked well with his persona. I liked Fenella, she reminded me of how certain rejections stay with you for years, even when life moves on and you’re doing “better” on the surface. That quiet insecurity, the what-if thoughts, the need to prove yourself — I saw myself in that.
Being inseparable in childhood and then suddenly growing apart due to something, can take a toll on anybody. But I liked that Fenella doesn’t magically become fearless after her glow-up. She’s still fragile in places, still hesitant, still affected by the past, but healing nonetheless.
The book always showcases the struggles of modelling industry, and some things add a layer of suspense which keeps you hooked. Also the dynamics between Fenella & Laird, their unresolved conversations, the awkwardness, and their explosive chemistry, all added more charm to the story.
This book also reminded me that wanting validation from someone who once hurt you doesn’t make you weak — it makes you human. Fenella’s journey isn’t about revenge; it’s about reclaiming confidence that was taken from her too early. And watching her slowly stop defining herself through someone else’s rejection was quietly satisfying.
And now fair warning, this book ends on a massive cliffhanger, which might make you yearn for the sequel... But lucky for you, the sequel's ALREADY OUT! (check out the author's page for it!!!)
All in all, this one was a pretty great read and I CANNOT wait to dive into book 2 !!!
Okay, first off, this book had me in my feelings. Like imagine your childhood crush rejecting you ‘cause you weren’t his “type,” and years later you glow up, become a model, and boom he’s back in your orbit? Yeah, that’s Fenella’s story. And honestly? She’s THAT girl.
Fenella is confidence, ambition, and quiet revenge all wrapped in one. She’s living her best life until destiny throws her face-to-face with her ex-crush, Laird, a man who’s now successful, composed, and dangerously charming.
He’s the kind of guy who walks into a room and the air literally changes. Laird gives off “emotionally unavailable but secretly obsessed” energy 😮💨 confident in public, but you can tell his calm cracks every time he’s near Fenella. He’s got that lawyer-type intelligence, that control-freak aura, but deep down? He’s haunted by the one that got away. Every word between them feels like a battle of pride and longing.
The tension? Off. The. Charts. Every glance, every near-touch, every sarcastic comment has the weight of years behind it. It’s giving “hate you but can’t stop wanting you” core.😭😩
What hits hardest is how Syanna Rose turns this story into more than just a romance — it’s about growth, closure, and the messy art of moving on while still feeling everything.
And just when you think you’re settled, the book hits you with a cliffhanger that leaves you gasping and desperate . Trust me, you’ll be counting the seconds until you can find out what happens next.
A glamorous, messy, slow-burn rollercoaster where confidence meets regret — and love gets a second chance to win.
I just finished reading "Winning My Ex Crush" by Syanna Rose, and I'm still reeling from the experience! As a debut author, Syanna Rose has set the bar incredibly high for herself, and I'm excited to see what she comes up with next.
The plot of this book is absolutely captivating. The story revolves around Fenella and Laird, childhood best friends who became sworn enemies after a painful incident in their past. The way their relationship evolves from friendship to animosity and eventually to romance is expertly woven, keeping me hooked from start to finish.
The chemistry between Fenella and Laird is undeniable. Their banter is witty, their interactions are charged with tension, and the spice is INCREDIBLY HOT 🔥! Syanna Rose has a way of making you feel the heat between the characters, and I found myself getting lost in their world.
What I loved most about this book is how well the author developed the characters. Fenella, a model, and Laird, a lawyer, are both complex and relatable, with their own set of flaws and strengths. Their past experiences have shaped them into the people they are today, and it's fascinating to see how they navigate their feelings for each other.
The writing is engaging, and the pacing is spot-on. I appreciated how the author didn't rush the story, allowing the characters to grow and develop naturally. The supporting cast is also well-written, adding depth to the narrative.
If you're looking for a romance novel with a healthy dose of spice, "Winning My Ex Crush" is a must-read. Syanna Rose has a winner on her hands, and I'm eager to see what she writes next. Don't miss out on this debut novel – it's sure to leave you breathless!
'Winning my ex-crush' by Syanna Rose is a Romantic suspense thriller. It revolves around the main leads 'Fenella Baxter' and 'Laird Evans' . They both are childhood Friends who are separated in their teenage years due to a misunderstanding.
There is a dual timeline in this book which is an important part of the story. The Suspense in the story grips one till the end and I was satisfied with the conclusion and looking forward to more of it in the second installment.
Fenella as a Supermodel and Laird as a Lawyer when they meet as adults they just have an amazing chemistry.I hope to see more depth and communication between them in the second part. Laird is a balanced character and his backstory makes his personality and behavior more understanding.
Themes like 'Bullying' and 'Workplace Harassment' did catch my attention in the book. How both males and Females face this is well depicted in the story. The World of Modelling through Fenella's character is portrayed beautifully and it gets one totally involved in it.
The character of 'Jessy' as Fenella's friend was fun to read and I did enjoy his scenes with her in the book. I hope to see more growth and maturity in Fenella's character as an individual personality.
There were certain scenes of the Supermodel world in the book which reminded me of the Bollywood movie 'Fashion'. Those who watched the movie might agree with me.I would love to see some Bollywood fans here.
Overall I did enjoy the Suspense, Romance and chemistry in the book. Excited to read the second part of the book 😁
Vibe: Second Chance, Romantic Suspense, Childhood Friends to Enemies to Lovers, Model x Lawyer 👠⚖️
Winning My Ex-Crush is the kind of messy, chaotic second-chance romance that grips you from the first chapter. It follows Fenella and Laird, who were inseparable childhood best friends until he completely broke her heart on prom night. Years later, their paths collide again in a wild, tequila-fueled night, and let me tell you, the chemistry is still absolutely explosive.
Laird, our MMC, gives off major emotionally unavailable but secretly obsessed energy. He is a sharp, successful lawyer now, while Fenella, our FMC, is trying to save her fading modeling career, but he watches her like a hawk. Their dynamic is full of I hate you but I can't stop wanting you tension that makes every interaction feel electric.
What surprised me was that this isn't just a fluff piece, there is genuine suspense woven through it. The story tackles heavy themes like workplace harassment and bullying in the modeling industry, adding a layer of danger that keeps you on edge. The dual timeline works perfectly to slowly peel back the layers of their past while the present-day drama ramps up.
Just a heads-up, this book ends on a massive cliffhanger that will leave you screaming for the sequel!. If you love spicy romances with high stakes, childhood angst, and a hero who is determined to win her back, you need to add this debut to your list.
Some love stories don't end. They pause... waiting for the right moment to collide again.
This book is a gripping blend of second-chance romance, ambition, and buried secrets that refuse to stay buried. Laird Evans appears to have everything status, power, a future mapped out in gold but what he truly wants is the one thing he lost. Fenella Baxter, on the other hand, is fighting time, regret, and a fading dream, determined not to let her past define her... until it walks straight back into her life.
The chemistry between Laird and Fenella is intense, complicated, and painfully real. Every interaction carries years of unspoken hurt, longing, and unfinished business. Their love feels raw, messy in the way real relationships are where forgiveness isn't easy and trust has to be earned all over again.
What truly elevates this story is the darker undercurrent woven beneath the romance. As Fenella's career begins to rise, so does a sense of unease.
Manipulation, obsession, and hidden truths create a growing tension that keeps you hooked, reminding you that sometimes the greatest danger comes disguised as opportunity.
This isn't just a story about rekindled love, it's about choosing courage over comfort, truth over illusion, and deciding whether the past should define the future or finally be laid to rest.
A compelling read for anyone who loves angsty romance, second chances, emotional depth, and a touch of suspense.
The past never stays buried, especially when it looks this good.
This book absolutely nails the second-chance romance vibe, but what truly makes it shine is Fenella. Her whole journey of self-reclamation getting her life back after being totally betrayed is just phenomenal. Seriously, watching her find that quiet strength and rebuild her professional career was the most satisfying emotional payoff in the whole story. You’re rooting for her from page one. The dual timeline is genius. Flipping seamlessly between the painful, poignant past and the scorching, volatile present just loads the tension. Every single look and clipped word between Fenella and Laird is heavy with all that history it’s an incredibly addictive dynamic that keeps you glued to the pages. And let's be real, Laird works perfectly as the intense, flawed hero who forces Fenella to finally face her past head-on. This one successfully mixes the spice, the high-heat tension, and the deep emotional stakes, especially when it deals with the complicated career challenges Fenella has to overcome. It’s an absorbing, high-stakes read that pulls you in completely. That powerful ending felt totally earned and definitely left me desperate for the next book. If you love a messy, angsty story where the heroine comes out on top, you need to grab this.
Okay, first things first — this book owned me. Messy, emotional, full of tension, and so impossible to put down that I literally had to remind myself to breathe! 😭💔
Winning My Ex-Crush is a heartfelt second-chance romance wrapped in suspense, betrayal, and a whole lot of sizzling chemistry 🔥 It’s not your regular “we broke up and met again” story — it’s intense, dramatic, and surprisingly real.
Fenella and Laird’s story had me hooked from page one. Fenella’s character is complex — a little chaotic, a little lost, but so raw and relatable. She starts off as this obsessed, heartbroken girl, but watching her grow into her own person was honestly beautiful 🕊️
And Laird? Ugh. The perfect mix of broody, sweet, and frustratingly loyal. Their chemistry was electric — every argument, every soft moment, every stolen glance just crackled with tension⚡
This book is everything I love in a romance: 💌 Second chances 💞 Childhood sweethearts 🕯️ Romantic suspense 🔥 Open-door spice ✨ Flaws, forgiveness, and fierce emotions
Also, extra points for the twists! Every time I thought I had it figured out, that the story would go in a certain direction, it went “plot twist, babe!” and I gasped. 😿
I recently finished Winning My Ex Crush, and this book kept me hooked from the very first page. It’s messy, emotional, and absolutely hard to put down.
The story follows Fanella, a model, and Laird, a lawyer. They were childhood best friends who turned into lovers—until Laird broke her heart on prom night, telling her she wasn’t his type. Years later, Fanella meets him again at a bar after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. One wild night with the man she swore to hate changes everything. What begins as a one-night fling slowly turns into something that forces both of them to face buried pain.
At first, I didn’t like Fanella—her whole world seemed to revolve around Laird. She built her life trying to impress the man who once broke her heart. But as the story progressed, I realized it was more than that. And Laird—he was so sweet, though he did have a temper. Their story felt raw and real. The dual timelines made the book even more interesting and engaging.
Overall, I loved this book. It’s a second-chance romance filled with passion, pain, and empowerment. The story also touches on important themes like bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace which makes it more than romance .
I absolutely devoured Winning My Ex-Crush in one sitting—seriously, warn your friends before you start this one, because you won’t be able to put it down! I initially went in for the classic second-chance romance trope, but Syanna Rose delivers so much more, wrapping it all up in a delicious layer of romantic suspense. I loved Fenella’s journey; she’s not the foolish, spoiled girl Laird Evans rejected years ago. She’s a fierce, determined model fighting for her career, and watching her try to keep her guard up against Laird’s intense, renewed interest was genuinely captivating. I felt the tension between Fenella and Laird jump off the page. The chemistry is electric, messy, and undeniable. Laird is the perfect broody hero—you know he messed up badly in the past, but his commitment to earning her forgiveness this time is incredibly swoon-worthy. I really appreciated how the suspense plotline, involving Fenella’s manipulative new boss, didn’t feel tacked on; it actively raises the stakes and forces Laird and Fenella to confront their old wounds. It’s definitely an “open-door” read, so prepare for the heat! I highly recommend this if you crave spicy romance with a side of mystery and a hero who fights dirty to win back his girl.
Fenella is that girl who is confident, ambitious, and quietly dangerous in the best way. She’s not out for pity or revenge...she’s out here reclaiming her worth with grace and fire. But then enters Laird who is successful, composed and the kind of man who can ruin your calm with just one look. The air literally shifts when he walks in. He’s all emotionally unavailable type but secretly obsessed and it’s both infuriating and addictive.
Now just imagine being rejected by your childhood crush because you weren’t his type… and then years later, you’re thriving, glowing, living your best life and boom💥destiny brings him back like nothing ever happened. Yeah. That’s Fenella’s story. And oh my God, she ate and left no crumbs.
The tension? It’s unreal. Every glance, every almost-touch, every word drips with years of unspoken history. It’s slow-burn, angsty, and emotionally destructive.
But what really got me was how this isn’t just about romance. Syanna Rose makes it about growth.... about closure, moving on, and learning to love yourself even when your heart’s a mess. And just when you think you’ve survived the emotional damage, that cliffhanger hits and leaves you questioning all your life choices.
I honestly didn’t expect Winning My Ex-Crush to hit me this hard. I was pulled straight into the emotions, the tension, and the chaos that comes with loving someone you once lost( I relate to it so much )It’s a story that feels messy in the most beautiful way ..it's raw, real, and painfully emotional.
The author has a way of writing that makes you feel everything. The heartbreak, the longing, the anger, the what-ifs like it’s all there, woven through her words so effortlessly. The chemistry between the characters isn’t only physical, but it’s emotional; you can feel their history in every glance, every chapter.
Nothing was overly dramatic or forced; it’s that kind of pain that sneaks up on you and stays long after. The writing is soft yet intense, the kind that makes you obsessed and reread certain lines just to feel them again.
If you love second-chance romances that are emotional, a little dark, and completely addictive, this book is for you. It’s the kind of story that makes your heart ache in the best way possible.
✨ Heartbreaking, passionate, and impossible to put down. ✨
❣️This author was new to me, but the captivating plot and memorable characters won me over, leaving me keen to read more of their work. ❣️Fenella and Laird's story begins with a childhood friendship that blossomed into romance, but was cruelly cut short at prom when Laird broke Fenella's heart. ❣️ Time passed, yet both parties couldn't shake off the feeling of what could have been, until fate brought them together again. ❣️After a breakup, Fenella's drinking night led to a steamy encounter with Laird that reignited old flames. The real challenge lay in finding the courage to pursue true feelings and confront the secrets that kept them apart. ❣️The narrative moves at a brisk pace, with well-crafted characters and sizzling chemistry, delving into themes of trauma, resilience, and the power of love to heal old wounds. ❣️This book skillfully combines lighthearted humor with genuine self-discovery, making it an uplifting and poignant read. ❣️If you're fond of nostalgic crush vibes, subtle sparks, and tender second chances, this novel hits the perfect note. Can't wait for book 2.......
Let's start with how this book could've been better as a dark romance, because I found the characters kinda off and red flaggish but it wasn't that bad.
The first half was slow paced with the usual high school drama but the later half was so chaotic I couldn't take my eyes off.
Fenella Baxter, a model who's only dream is to become a super model. She has worked hard to be every magazine's face, every brand's ambassador until her ex crush, or the boy who broke her heart in high school comes into the picture.
Laird Evans, a hot shot lawyer, choosing his father's lineage instead of his own dreams. He has only one goal, to keep it together and breakthrough the tough competition in his father's firm. Until one face at the club distracted him.
What happens when Laird and Fenella meet again after all these years and they both got their glow ups? Worse, they were childhood friends and became enemies just because of one misunderstanding.
The book could've been a lot better had the characters were not so off(ish) but the cliff hanger and the plot twist at the end page had me and now I will just hope the next book would give me what I am looking for!
I usually avoid second-chance romances, but Winning My Ex-Crush made me rethink that choice. This story captures the ache of loving someone, losing them to time and misunderstandings, and then being forced to face those unresolved feelings again as an adult. What once felt simple as childhood sweethearts becomes complicated, messy, and emotionally heavy and that’s what made it feel real. The gap between the characters, the silence, and the missed conversations hurt in the best way. Their love isn’t dramatic for the sake of it; it’s slow, lingering, and full of things left unsaid. You can feel how the past still clings to them, making every interaction tense and loaded. The side characters added warmth to the story, especially Jessi. Clumsy and imperfect, but loyal in his own way, he brought balance and emotional grounding when things felt overwhelming. Some scenes carried a surprising adrenaline rush intense, dark, and hard to put down. This book isn’t just about rekindling love; it’s about confronting the past and deciding whether it’s worth reopening old wounds. A heartfelt, slightly dark second-chance romance that stays with you long after you finish.
Fenella Baxter had always been a believer in fairytales until Laird Evans, her childhood best friend and crush, broke her heart on prom night by essentially telling her she wasn't his type of girl.
Years later, Fenella has taken that hurt and turned it into a life of strength. She is a model, working hard to achieve her dreams right among the glamour, competition, and ulterior motives. Just as shone bright and is learning how to stand tall, Laid comes back into her life.
The boy who rejected her, is grown up into a confident man, and he knows what he wants: to win her back. Can Fenella navigate revenge, u, equillibre her feelings, while also ensuring she protects her career? When the ghosts of yesterday meets the realities of today, she learns that self worth is not about being right, it is about peace.
✨ Winning My Ex-Crush is a second chance romance that is all about passion, pain, and empowerment. It is centered around healing old wounds and advocating for yourself; and also, realizing that love can sometimes take a second look.
It's a steamy romantic suspense filled with love , heartbreak, betrayal , friendship, passion, angst
Honestly I was so angry at laird at the beginning for breaking fenella's heart and now he was like I'm going to win you back . but as you keep reading it becomes more interesting. it keeps you hooked till the end . i loved the childhood moments of Fenella and Laird— they were cute 🥰🥰 I actually liked Fenella's character —strong, independent , determined, kind hearted.
For the side characters whether positive or negative they were written perfectly I really liked jessy's character it added the light humor to the story .
the twist at the ending was unexpected and i liked it . the story ends on a cliffhanger which makes me curious what happens next . 🤔🤔
overall it was a nice read if you want to read something short , romantic with little bit of suspense and ofcourse spicy 🤭 you will like it 🤗🤗
"Yes. Right after law school, I came straight to New York to find you" <3
Winning my ex-crush has me in shambles. The angst and longing had me screaming my head off. I started this book after my exams, but this book had me more stressed from wanting to know what exactly happened.
Fenella (such a pretty name btw) is a character that walks into your life like a storm. Her faith and trust in herself are truly admirable. There are so many instances that were so problematic and she handled it so well and I was impressed. Laird had me swooning and as well as screaming. The longing was just so well written from his perspective. I also loved the way this book portrays how misunderstandings can literally ruin lives.
I absolutely loved the prequel as well. It added more depth to the Fenella and Laird's relationship, and it was lovely to read about the high school life. I am so excited to read the sequel and can't wait to get my hands on it.
Tropes: * Second chance * Unfinished love * Cliffhanger * Childhood best friends * Romantic suspense
Safety: Cheating, bullying, SA, power imbalance, cliffhanger ending with a HFN
Rejected for not being Laird’s ‘type’ when they were younger, Fenella left her childhoost best friend and forges a modelling career. When life hits her years later (a cheating boyfriend), she comes across Laird at a club, and the story begins….
I struggled with their characters. Fenella shaped herself as an adult based on ‘getting back’ at Laird. And honestly, his first interactions with her made him seem pretty shallow. Now that she’s had the glow-up, he’s interested in her?
When secrets finally come out, it reminds you just how silly and immature their characters are, even though the story itself hooks you in.
A HFN, and no resolution…. I guess it’s onto book two.
Reviewed by Abbey on behalf of The Plot Thickens Book Club Title: Winning My Ex-Crush Author: Syanna Rose Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5 stars) rounded up to 4 for rating purposes. This second-chance romance had me intrigued from the start! Winning My Ex-Crush follows Fenella Baxter, a model whose career is fading, and Laird Evans the boy who broke her heart on prom night and now wants a second chance. Their reunion? Messy, emotional, and full of unresolved tension. Add in a powerful new boss with secrets of his own, and you’ve got a story layered with betrayal, mystery, and longing. There’s just the right mix of steam and suspense to keep the pages turning. While it wasn’t my favourite of the year, I still found it engaging and easy to devour. If you love old flames, big secrets, and fashion-world drama, this one is definitely worth the read!
This story was a heartfelt story between two very messy people. Laird and Fenella have this chemistry and pull between them that just can’t be escaped. Things are sweet and dramatic and chaotic. I couldn’t put the book down, couldn’t stop reading it. There’s history and old wounds there that have to be addressed before a future can be a possibility. Fenella was always the one who got away for Laird. She thought she had buried those feelings long ago. But tequila always brings out the truth. As they worked to deal with their past and their present these two have to work through a lot of feelings and issues. The twists and turns in the story, and their raw emotions, really had me on the rollercoaster right next to them. And that cliffhanger left my flabbers fully gasted. I have to know what happens.
This is a well written second chance romance. This is Fenella and Laird's story. She is a model with a soon fading career and Laird is the ex who broke her heart. When she surprisingly sees Laird again after years apart, she wants to reject him, hate him and make him feel the pain she felt when he hurt her. But those feelings are definitely still there and she can't help herself. After a few too many drinks they are in bed together and their connection is hotter than ever. Laird is determined that he won't let her go this time. Has he really changed? Can love be better the second time around? I really enjoyed this book, the character's lives are complicated and their relationship has some rocky paths ahead but I was really rooting for their HEA.
Winning My Ex-Crush is the first book in a duology for Love and Deception.
We meet Fenella right as her career is about to skyrocket. She is a (super) model and she's been doing it ever since high school. She is at a party and runs into Laird (who now is a Lawyer) and they have a night of passion. Well, Laird doesn't want to let this chance go to be with Fenella.
Winning my Ex-Crush has twists, turns, and the support characters (Jessy and Alan) bring even more to the table. Jessy is dealing with a lot outside of managing Fenella. Alan is not who and what he seems.. he is dangling a carrot in front of Fenella.. and it might not be in her best interest to say yes.

Winning my Ex-Crush is a childhood best friends with miscommunication and unexpected second chances. This is Fenella and Laird’s story with past mistakes that cost them a friendship/ potential relationship. I love the way they came back to each other and tried to work things out but the past still haunts and hurts them. I like how they build the tension and still get jealous over those who talk to them. But they push through and talked it out. I love how they finally open up to that night that changed things but then things started to get twisty at the end and left me wanting to know more. I really enjoyed their story and now have more questions that need answers. I can’t wait to read the next one.
I voluntarily leave an honest review of this gifted advance reader copy.
