Doctor Kone Zevy and his team of robot assistants have been assigned to a clinic on Davrim, a small planet with far more than its fair share of volcanic activity. Despite the clinic's unsavory reputation, and an unenthusiastic reception from the locals, Kone dreams of providing the best medical care around. And then things start to go very wrong...

I totally love this author’s graphic novels. They always draw me in and just leave me feeling cozy & thoughtful. Since this one’s on the shorter side, it held the vibe of episode of Star Trek for me. Not going to lie, I was so glad to see the robots rebuilt at the end, and it’s always fun when you can emotionally invested even in a short piece. If you’re interested in a sci-fi in a unique world with a relatable premise, I definitely recommend picking this one up and I’m excited to see what the author comes out with next!

I was privileged enough to get to an ARC to review of this book. What follows is my personal opinion, and was not influenced by that.

I’ve been privileged enough to see plenty of the author’s artwork, even having two of my own characters brought to life through her, but this my first time reading any of her complete work. I really enjoyed this story, which is written in an easy to read comic format. I felt a connection to these characters that I hadn’t anticipated, but was rooting for Dr. Kone.

It was a fast, fun read and left me hoping to hear more from these characters in the future!

I'll start off by saying, I really like Dr. Kone. I liked how he cared about his work, but was also humble and willing to correct mistakes and respect other people's beliefs. The foreshadowing and flashback scenes were well-done (took my brain a minute to figure that out, but that's because I'm still new to the graphic novel format.) And I love the unique world the author created! I really hope she does more stories set in this world (The Davrim Prongs were adorable. Gave me some fun Star Wars vibes.)

4 stars. This was a very simple little graphic novel, and I really appreciated the straightforward theme. After founding a clinic in a new place, a foreign doctor is distrusted, and mistreated after he's accused of harming a patient. I was impressed by his humility, love, and transparency, and the ending was very satisfactory. Also, the volcano added a fun layer.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

It is no secret that I LOVE Roshan's graphic novels. This one was no different. I had such a great time learning about the culture of the creatures living around the volcanoes, and I thought the story, though simple, was sweet and had some great themes. I'm looking forward to whatever Roshan does next!

I have to say this is my less favourite installment so far in the world of Maze, Silk & Free. While the worldbuilding was interesting to see and explore, the plot was fairly well-structured and the style of writing was concise and engaging, I just didn't end up liking or caring about any of the characters.

I couldn't see any theme or message that is significant to pull out and talk about here. It's vaguely about second chances, forgiveness and grace after making mistakes, but those elements just didn't land for me. It didn't feel earned. And I know that those things are meant to be underserved, but the character giving them was forced to do so and out of selfishness, though justified by love and protectiveness for their family. One of the reasons that I found it hard to connect and care. I understand why they were the way they were, but their "change of heart" just didn't feel genuine for me.

That brings me to another point. Whose side was I meant to be on? Maybe that's the point, to be on both sides, but I found it frustrating. Both did wrong to each other. A medical mistake is a serious crime, even a small one. And unapologetically (even to the end) taking someone against their will, destroying their property, and knowing that they may get killed in the location you left them is terrible too. Repaying evil with evil. While I understand the distrust and betrayal for one, and the deep remorse for making the mistake for the other, was just another reason to feel disconnected to the characters.

I guess there wasn't enough time with the characters, understanding who they are and what they stand for, to feel anything. Everything happened fast and it ended quickly.

I was disappointed that the doctor didn't help anyone in the end. I would have liked to see that since that was his main goal and desire throughout the whole story.

Other than my lack of connection to the characters and empathy for their positive traits, like I mentioned in the beginning I enjoyed everything else in this comic. And do I look forward to reading more installments in this world in the future and read more of this author's work.

If you like planets with a vulcano, a medical doctor in a distrustful community plotline, and a daring escape from death, then I would recommend this story!

Thank you to the author for reaching out to me and giving me an ARC.

Lava is about Kone Zevy who is assigned to a clinic on Davrim, where he and his robots try to provide the healthcare to the people of Davrim.

I quite enjoyed this comic. Not only the art style but the story itself as well. The art style is unusual from the other comics I tend to read but it's easy to understand and I ended up flying through the comic. The only thing I would have changed about it is to add a bit of colour from time to time to make it a bit more clear with flashbacks etc.

Story wise it was a bit difficult to get into the story since it seems to start in the middle of an event so to say. However once you're in the story it is very fun. I did wonder why the comic was called Lava, but that cleared itself later.

The story itself was very fun and cute in a way and just followed the doctor trying to correct his wrong on a patient that he treated. And with that some other events happened at the same time.

I recommend this comic and I am looking forward to look into more comics of this author in the future!

Lava is a short graphic novel the E.B. Roshan made with her kids in mind. It's the story of a  medical doctor from a large organization trying to earn the trust of the locals on an out-of-the-way planet, but an unfortunate turn of events causes a rift. I have to admit, I wish the author delved a little more deeply into the background of the doctor or shown more of an ending. I don't know if there will be a continuation for Kone or not, but I hope so. The interesting thing about the story is that, though there seems to be a villain and a victim, it's not really that simple. And I might have wished for more in a reconciliation, but what is shown here is probably much more realistic. I do wonder if Roshan intends for kids to choose sides, and if so, which side. The graphics were well-done, especially when taking into account that this graphic novel is self-published. I appreciated the way that flashbacks were made clear with a sort of hazy look to the panels. It allowed the author to show more in a smaller space of time. I could definitely see this being a book that young readers (maybe around 8-10 years old?) would enjoy and a nice early delve into space-based sci-fi.

Hey everyone, I’m Ayxan Solongo aka Arden Skye aka TimeFliesAway, a shapeshifter traveling through the multiverse.

In this world, I’ve visited the Planet Davrim and got to see a glimpse of Kone’s life. The planet was recently invaded by humans but so far it seems they only came to study it. Kone was sent by a company, Mercy Mission, and works as a doctor on the planet. He really likes it there as he once went out of his way to save/help a patient, even though the alien folk doesn’t trust him.
It’s a very quick adventure that felt like a prologue. There’s some secrecy around the robots, the mission and the environment. Perhaps a bit cliche and nothing really new in the genre, but it still makes me want to explore more. I hope I’ll get to visit it again? I’d like to know more about this alien species and their language.
The art style is simple but cutesy.

Thank you to the author, E.B. Roshan, for sending me a digital invitation. The story was released as a short comic on August 26, 2025 in this universe.

Lava follows a well-intentioned doctor named Kone who runs a clinic on Davrim. When a medical mistake runs him out of town, he’s forced to wait in solitude for a ride off the planet. At the same time, the fire funnels threaten to erupt, and Kone must make a run back to safety and hope the people will grant him enough mercy to spare his life.

Lava is a short but sweet graphic novel full of action, suspense, and a moral tale about good intentions butting heads with skepticism. I love the grounded nature of the story mixed with the sci-fi look and feel that makes it both interesting and relatable.

Overall, Roshan continues to hit hard and deep topics in a way that is approachable for kids. It allows for bigger discussions when ready or just an enjoyable story when not. I can’t wait for the next addition to this universe. I need to keep exploring.

On the faraway planet of Davrim, Dr. Kone of the Mercy Mission works hard at his clinic to help the people of this distant world. The altruistic doctor fights to overcome years of mistrust brought about by his less than scrupulous peers, hoping to make a true difference for good. But when the treatment of young Lena goes sideways, her father Brim goes to drastic measures to ensure Dr. Kone never treats anyone on Davrim again. Stranded in a dangerous wilderness, Dr. Kone races the clock to save Lena…and hopefully stay alive as the lava flows down.
“Lava” by E.B. Roshan is an excellent graphic novel that seems pulled straight from the Silver Age of comics. A gentle science fiction setting that addresses real problems in a non-threatening way, this story would fit right into a classic “Doctor Who” saga during the Tom Baker years. Dr. Kone is an altruistic hero who’s only desire is to help others. Unfortunately, the people of Davrim have seen such horrors that they don’t believe in altruism anymore, and constantly suspect Dr. Kone of hidden malice. I feel that this is a very relevant story for this day and age, where those with ill intentions make it doubly challenging for those who truly wish to do good.
The art is classic comic art for younger readers, and I love this snapshot into lives far away on this distant world that feels familiar despite its alien nature. All in all, it’s a great read that reminds me of simpler days pulling a comicbook from the store shelf and being absolutely thrilled with the results. The story is full of action that is gently paced, and comes to a brilliant conclusion. The only complaint I have about this five-star graphic novel is that I wish it was much, much longer!
A fantastic science fiction tale of a selfless hero pitted against prejudice, this faraway adventure is perfect for readers 10 and up who love exploring the stars. This graphic novel contains fantasy violence, volcanos, and a scene with a medical injection. For young readers just stepping out in to the world of science fiction, or older readers who remember this kind of tale from their own childhoods, this tale of a hero who never gives up is sure to bring joy to your universe.

I'm not someone who typically reads much in the way of graphic novels, but I always enjoy picking up these short titles from author E.B. Roshan.

Lava is a fun, short graphic novel that she wrote with her kids in mind. It's a pretty small time commitment to pick it up, and what it lacks in length, it definitely makes up for in depth.

I felt an instant connection to the characters, especially Dr. Kone as he navigates operating a medical clinic in the foreign Davrim, and deals with suspicions and stereotypes from the locals after one of his treatments go awry. I was rooting for him to change everyone's minds, and I was pleasantly impressed with how the story unraveled and wrapped at the end.

It continues to amaze me that the author handles the artwork for these titles herself, as they're always so well done, and definitely make the story come to life on the page. This was overall a fun and sweet story with lovely illustrations, and I thought the volcano added another unexpected element that helped the story come together quite nicely.

Final Rating: 4/5.

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a short, family friendly graphic novel.

Thanks so much to the author for allowing me to read and review this title!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance reader copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positve review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.

E.B. Roshan has done it again! I’ve probably said this before, but I now have a new favorite comic by her.

Assigned to a clinic on the volcanic planet of Davrim, Dr. Kone finds himself in trouble when a young patient has a poor reaction to a treatment. This fuels the already present resentment against the clinic. He’s as worried about his patient as her parents.

I found this to be the most emotional of this author’s comics. The stakes were high, and though a work of science fiction, it captured the realistic worries that we humans experience. I loved it! I also enjoyed the setting of the volcanic planet. This made for some great action panels. I would love to see this turned into a series. It's an intriguing premise.

A huge thanks to the author for inviting me to read a free digital ARC of the book!

Once again, as delightful as it is original. Within the cloud that hangs over the sometimes-brutal tactics of expansion, a sincere heart and a silver lining.
