Wow. This story pulled me in from the very first sentence and didn’t let go until the very end. The writing is so vivid and atmospheric that I could feel the cold air, hear the crunch of twigs, and sense the tension building with every step.
What I loved most is how the author captures the patience and intensity of a predator, slowly stalking its moment, until everything explodes in a way that’s both shocking and unforgettable. The Bengal tiger metaphor is brilliant—it gives the whole story a primal, haunting energy that made it impossible to look away.
This isn’t just a suspenseful read—it’s a journey into obsession, betrayal, and the razor edge of human emotion. It’s dark, gripping, and beautifully written. I found myself holding my breath more than once, and the ending left me stunned.
If you enjoy stories that are tense, immersive, and unafraid to dive into the shadows, I highly recommend this one. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after you’ve finished.
This story of power and deceit was really well written and I loved it was told from multiple POV but wasn’t confusing at all. Easy to keep up with who’s who and who you like and who you don’t!
Lyla and Jack seem like the perfect couple, him a sheriff and her a district attorney making quite the golden couple but as we know things are never as they seem!
Lyla’s lover a fellow district attorney turns up dead and all eyes are on Lyla as the last person to see him alive. But with secret and lies from everyone, no one can be trusted and the book provides a real whodunit vibe. There were points when I felt a bit confused by Emma’s die hard belief of Lylas innocence considering her feelings towards her and Jack. But loved her dedication to truth.
I did see the whole plot and twists coming from very early on, but didn’t take away from the writing and story, there were still a few times I doubted myself so kept turning those pages to find out.
A great easy crime thriller read that will keep you turning the pages with its short and snappy chapters.
I absolutely loved this cover, so I couldn't resist diving into the book! I tend to read a lot, which might make me a little too good at guessing twists (sometimes!). Right from the start, I had a couple of scenarios in mind for how this whodunit mystery might unfold. Surprisingly, I was right, but that didn’t take away from the overall reading experience.
Lyla and Jack Peterson seem like a perfect couple, with Jack as a sheriff and Lyla as a district attorney. Their world crumbles when Lyla's lover is found dead, making her the prime suspect. Complicating matters, her stepfather's body resurfaces after fifteen years. As Detective Aiden Blackwood investigates, Lyla and Jack race to prove her innocence, uncovering a plot to frame her that puts their lives at risk.
The story unfolds through multiple point-of-view characters, which I always find exciting since it keeps you on your toes, eagerly waiting for more details. We delve into the lives of Jack, Emma, Riya, Brent, Lyla, and Bree, all developed thoughtfully in each chapter. Even if you see a few twists coming, there are still plenty of surprises to keep you hooked. Some parts did slow down a bit and felt a little over-explained, but I can understand the author’s intent to provide as much information as possible. The lies and web of deceit create a palpable sense of dread that leaps off the pages! Well done!
The events initially take place in a secluded location, adding an eerie atmosphere to the narrative. It’s up to you to figure out who your favorite character is and who might be a suspect. In whodunit mysteries, you often don’t need to look far for clues, yet the author skillfully misleads you, making you question the innocence of certain characters. Be ready to distrust everyone you encounter, as there are some shady figures lurking nearby.
This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys playing detective with various perspectives and a dual timeline. If you love puzzles where justice is served and a multitude of twists and turns to keep you engaged, this is for you. Just don’t get overly confident, as you might end up guessing the character the author wants you to favor. With my monthly reading habit, I’ve learned to look for the least suspected perpetrator—but is that the right approach? You’ll need to read this suspenseful tale to find out! I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll have to snoop through my husband’s phone just in case I’m missing something! Ha!
Thank you so much Shelly for reaching out and introducing me to this book. I'm always eager to support authors by purchasing their work, especially if a DRC isn't available. Congratulations on creating such a twisted, dark read! I truly hope my fellow book lovers give it a try, you definitely won’t regret it!
What would you do if you found out your spouse was cheating with your best friend? Yet you only found out after he was found murdered in your cabin? Would you still believe her innocence when all signs point to her? Shelly M. Patel did an amazing job at keeping me guessing all throughout The Perfect One. The story starts out following the murderer as they commit their crime; however, no gender is given, and not enough details to determine who it might be. The rest of the book goes back and forth in time between the different points of view to help paint the picture and build the suspense.
Patel really did a fantastic job at slowly building the case and dropping different hints throughout. I changed my mind multiple times on who it might be, but I was still completely shocked when the final reveal came. While there are quite a few POVs in the book, she writes them in a way that is easy to follow and helps add to the story. She also did a great job at keeping the narrative voices separate so that you could truly appreciate the personality of the person leading that chapter.
The descriptions provided of the layout of the area were well done so that I was able to picture what was going on throughout the story. The interactions between the characters also felt as if they could be real. Emma would definitely have to be my favorite. I think it’s simply because she was very determined to do what was right, even if it meant losing what she wanted in life. She was not willing to let others go down for her gain.
The Perfect One by Shelly M. Patel is a well-written domestic thriller that will keep you guessing until the end! As far as content, there was a moderate amount of cursing, however no open-door bedroom scenes, just kissing. Even the bit of violence mentioned is kept very tame for the reader. I definitely recommend grabbing this book if you enjoy a decently paced thriller with twists throughout!

I was hooked from the very first page and I kept reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. Plus there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested and guessing until the end. The story had me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Overall, a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers. I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the author, Shelly M. Patel for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
After loving Shelly M. Patel’s novel A Broken Reflection, I couldn’t wait to read The Perfect One — and it didn’t disappoint. This story unfolds through multiple perspectives, with each chapter giving you just enough information to build suspicion and second-guess everything you’ve read before. The characters felt real — flawed, messy, and often forced to choose between protecting themselves or standing by someone who had hurt them.
The pacing was fantastic, each viewpoint flowing seamlessly into the next, and there was a shocking twist that had me gasping out loud. By the end, I couldn’t put it down. Patel has proven herself again with another suspenseful, character-driven mystery. If you liked her first book, or if you enjoy multiple POV thrillers with plenty of tension and emotional depth, this one is a must-read.
Wow, this book had me hooked from page one! Lyla and Jack’s seemingly perfect life was so intriguing, and the way Shelly Patel slowly unraveled it with twists, betrayals, and shocking secrets kept me glued to the story. I thought I had it all figured out more than once, but that 15-year-old family secret twist left me stunned. The pacing was perfect, the characters felt real and emotional, and the mix of suspense with raw human drama made it unforgettable. Easily one of the most gripping thrillers I’ve read in a long time—I’ll definitely be looking out for more from this author!
WOW! What a great read. I was hooked from the prologue. I have read all of this authors books but this is by far her best. Literally could not put book down. The more i read the more i had to read. So many twists in the plot and characters. Right when you think you have solved, another twist in story happens. And then the ending, what a way to leave the readers.
Definitely recommend this read to anyone who enjoys being on the edge of their seat for the entire book!
The Petersons: Jack and Lyla are friends with the Davidsons: Brent and Riya. They share a cabin in the woods. Lyla is a prosecutor and Bret is a defense attorney, they are currently working on a case in opposite sides. When Jack, a police sergeant is called because a dead body was found in the cabin, he discovers the victim is his friend Bret. The place was supposed to be a quiet corner of peace between man and nature, now it tainted with tragedy. Emma, a bright detective, is assigned to the case and the evidence suggests he was not alone, who was he with? A presumed cheater who upset an angry husband? This is a gripping page turner suspense thriller of my favorite author, the point of view of each character development is the best feature of this book. I would like to thank the author for the personalized signed copy of the book, it’s a precious gift I will always cherish. I can’t wait to read her next novel! Coming Soon: What Lies Next Door
The Perfect One pulled me in right away. The opening sets the tone for a dark and twisting story built on secrets, obsession, and the fragile edges of relationships. The book follows several characters whose lives intersect around a brutal murder in a secluded cabin, and the story unfolds through shifting perspectives that slowly reveal old wounds, hidden affairs, and long–buried resentment. It reads like a slow burn that keeps tightening, chapter after chapter, until every character feels like both a suspect and a victim.
Some chapters felt intimate and tightly drawn, the kind that keep you leaning closer because the emotions feel raw and too real. Other moments felt almost playful, like the author knew exactly when to pull back before things got too heavy. I liked that mix. It made the pacing unpredictable in a good way. I also enjoyed how the book handled tension. It did not rush, and it did not give easy answers. Instead, it let scenes breathe with quiet detail that sometimes made me uneasy. I appreciated that slow drip of dread. It made the world feel lived in and messy, which fit the characters perfectly.
What surprised me most was the emotional twists. I kept catching myself feeling sympathy for characters I had sworn I disliked ten pages earlier. Then the story tossed in another reveal, and my feelings flipped again. I love when a book does that. It makes me feel like I am part of the mess rather than just watching it. The ideas beneath the plot lingered with me, too. The story pokes at pride, loyalty, and the ways people hide things even from themselves.
Everything came together in a way that made sense for the world the author built, even when the truth was painful. I would recommend The Perfect One to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers, character–driven mysteries, or stories where the emotional stakes matter just as much as the plot. If you like books that take their time and let you sit in the characters’ minds while feeding you tension bit by bit, this one will be a great fit.
Lyla and Jack Peterson are the picture perfect couple. Who better to marry the Virginia Beach Sheriff than the District Attorney? When a friend of the couple is murdered in their shared cabin, Lyla is immediately in the hot seat. Lyla firmly maintains that she is being framed... but can she save herself from a future behind bars?
Overall, I really liked this book. It was a quick read and it was quite gripping. I enjoyed the multiple points of view and felt that most of the characters were well developed. The book ended with a whimper rather than a bang, but the ending did make sense.
I did have some issues with certain things. When I received this book, I believed it to be an ARC and wasn't going to mention any mistakes; however per Goodreads, the book was published in September. If this is in fact the final version, there were too many mistakes to overlook. I did not factor this into my rating, but did want to mention it. Also, the author didn't seem to have researched the legal system enough. A murder case went to trial in a month. The hearing was moved up to the next day with a snap of the fingers. Jury selection and motions did not exist. A murder trial was seemingly over in a day and the jury seemingly deliberately very briefly. I am obsessed with the legal system and these issues really took me out of the book. Luckily, the bulk of the book made up for the issues I had. This is a strong Read It, but heed my warnings about errors and inaccuracies.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: Power. Passion. Murder. On the surface, Lyla and Jack Peterson appear to be the golden couple he’s a respected Virginia Beach Sheriff, and she’s a powerful District Attorney. But behind closed doors, their marriage hides dangerous secrets. When Lyla’s lover, a charming defense attorney, turns up dead, she quickly becomes the prime suspect after all, she was the last to see him alive. As if that isn’t enough, the body of her stepfather resurfaces after fifteen years, shaking everything she thought she’d buried. Detective Aiden Blackwood must navigate a maze of lies, betrayal, and long-held grudges to uncover the truth. But as Lyla and Jack scramble to prove her innocence, they realize every friend might be a foe, every secret a weapon and someone is determined to see Lyla behind bars, no matter the cost.
My Thoughts: This book was an honest surprise. I was hooked from the very beginning! I wanted to finish it all in one sitting, but life had other plans. When I finally got close to the end, I caught myself speed reading and even blocking paragraphs with my hand so I wouldn’t accidentally spoil anything. That’s how intense it got!
A gripping, twisty, and addictive read that kept me on my toes from start to finish. I strongly recommend this one it’s a solid 4-star read for me.
Thank you, Shelly M. Patel, for the book. It was truly an honor to receive it.
I thought this was a great story and an enjoyable read. It’s a page turner with multiple points of view, allowing you to see different sides of what is happening along the way, adding to the suspicion of different characters. You will change your mind multiple times as to who the guilty party is. Unfortunately, there were a couple plot holes and points that went unanswered, so the ending was a little dissatisfying, causing my rating to be a little lower. Even with that said, I do recommend it because I did enjoy it and think others will as well. However, please read my addition note below because this book might not be for everyone.
Side note – I’m used to reading ARCs so errors don’t normally bother me, however, knowing this is the final, published version I must give a heads up that if you are one of those people in which errors bother you, you will probably not enjoy this book as much. There are missing words, misspelled words, a character misnamed, and a subway/metro in VA Beach where one has never existed (I assume initially the book was to take place elsewhere). The writing itself was fine, and I think this author has potential, but she needs a new editor.
Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy of this book. As always, the opinions expressed within this honest review are completely my own.
The Perfect One Shelly M. Patel @shellympatel 09/03/2025
Shelly M. Patel does it again, y’all. After Broken Reflection had me in a chokehold last year, I knew I’d read anything she wrote—and The Perfect One proves that was the right call. This book is twisty, scandalous, and dangerously addictive. It’s got small-town secrets, a DA with too many skeletons, and a murder (or two) that’ll have you side-eyeing every character like you’re the one solving the case. Patel knows how to blend heart-pounding tension with just the right touch of emotional chaos. Forget perfect—this one’s deliciously messy, and I’m absolutely here for it.
✨ 5 Reasons to Read #ThePerfectOne
💥 Double the drama – Two murders, one DA, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. 👀 Trust no one – Everyone’s hiding something… even the ones who look picture-perfect. 🔥 Emotional chaos – Marriage, career, and sanity all on the line—sign me up. 📖 Smart suspense – Sharp writing, tight pacing, zero filler—Patel doesn’t miss. 🌊 Virginia Beach vibes – Small-town charm meets big-time scandal.
This was a quick, enjoyable read that hooked me from the very first chapter. The author crafted a truly effective page-turner—I flew through the pages, eager to find out the truth! 🏃♀️
The best part of the book was how masterfully the author handled the suspense. I changed my mind a couple of different times about who I thought the culprit was, and I absolutely love when a thriller keeps you guessing and shifts your suspicions so effectively. The journey to the end was a thrilling, winding road. 🤯🔄
Unfortunately, the ending fell a little flat for me. 📉 After such a compelling build-up, the final revelation left me with an anticlimactic feeling, like a definitive "that's it?" I wish the conclusion had delivered the same punch that the rest of the book did. 😔
Overall: If you're looking for an addicting, fast-paced psychological thriller that will keep you guessing all the way through, this is a fantastic choice. Just be prepared for a slightly disappointing final curtain call. Highly Recommended! 👍

What a ride! The Perfect One hooked me from the very first chapter with its dark secrets, tangled relationships, and that slow burn tension that makes you question everyone. Patel knows exactly how to weave suspense with emotion! Just when I thought I’d figured it out, another twist hit me square in the face!
I loved the dual perspectives and how they gradually peeled back the layers of each character’s carefully constructed façade. There were moments where I genuinely didn’t know who to trust - which, for a psychological thriller, is exactly what I want.
While I would’ve loved a slightly tighter pacing in the middle, the final reveal was so satisfying and completely worth it. Patel is definitely one to watch for fans of domestic thrillers with a sharp emotional edge.
A twisty, gripping read perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell and Shari Lapena.
The Perfect One by Shelly Patel. Shelly very kindly sent me a copy of her book for me to read and review. When I say I DEVOURED this book in 2 days! I was intrigued and gripped throughout. Thought I guessed the killer quite early on but I was proved wrong and was left guessing until the very end...speaking of the end, omg the plot twist!! Deffo did not see that coming. I didn't like Lyla's character as I found her cold and unrelatable but I loved Emma and her determination / commitment, she stuck to her morals throughout and stood up for what she knew was right. I was confused around Riya and what her situation was and don't feel like that was fully explained. Also, this book is independently published, how cool is that! Overall, this was a very good book and I will deffo be reading more by this author.
The Perfect One by Shelly Patel is a fast, twisty thriller that hooked me early and kept the tension high all the way through. It starts with a couple who seems to have it all—successful, admired, and “perfect” on the outside—until a shocking crime cracks that image wide open and turns everything into a race to find the truth.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the multiple points of view. Each perspective adds a new layer, shifting your assumptions and keeping you guessing about who’s being honest, who’s hiding something, and what’s really going on. The pacing is strong—short chapters, steady reveals. If you like character-driven suspense with rotating POVs and plenty of “wait…what?” moments, this is a great pick.
From the opening prologue, this book completely gripped me and refused to let go. I found myself reading well into the night, unable to set it down until I reached the final page. The author’s The Perfect One is not only brilliantly written but also rich with atmosphere, immersive scenes, and raw human emotion that makes me feel transported into the story.
Emma quickly became my favorite character; she embodies strength, intelligence, and integrity, making her a compelling and memorable presence. For readers who love Freida McFadden’s gripping style, Shelly M. Patel may very well become your next favorite.I know this will not be my last read from this author.
I flew through this page turning thriller. A great concept, with twists along the way and a lot of lies and deceit!
I loved the short snappy chapters from multiple points of view, it added to the tension as the story unfolded.
I would have liked a bit more on the back story on the stepfather’s death (not a spoiler), I feel like there’s a whole other book that could deal with Lyla’s back story.
This was a classic whodunnit and would definitely appeal to thriller lovers.
I was really craving a gripping thriller/murder mystery, and this absolutely delivered. A story fuelled by power and lies, it had me hooked from the very first page.
The characters felt believable, the pacing was spot on (not once did I get bored), and the best part? It kept me guessing right until the very end—which is always so much fun.
Packed with betrayal, secrets, and suspense, this is a really well thought-out story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
This was my very first book by this author, recommended to me by one of my co-workers. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I hadn’t read any of her previous work, but wow—just wow! The prologue hooked me right away. The scenes were vivid and beautifully descriptive, and the raw emotions of each character came through so powerfully.
I really enjoyed this book. from the start it hooked me I had to find out who was guilty and what secrets were being kept. A couple of times I thought I had it all figured out, but then there would be a plot twist. I love it when this happens and if nothing else you have to read it for the ending the last phrase of the book has to be one of my favorites. If you left thrillers, read this
This was one of the authors best books! What a thriller and suspense- couldn’t put the book down- read it in 2 days!! Her characters and setting were explicitly detailed. I felt like I was in the story- amazing job! And hoping to read many more!! Each book surpasses the previous!! Thank you for brilliant storytelling!
This was a fab and fun fast paced Crime Thriller. I loved the POV of all suspects and detectives. Short chapters then lead to a "oh my god.... "thats who it was!" moment Kept me on my toes guessing . I almost feel like we could have a series of these detectives. I loved them Really enjoyable crime thriller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
