She left on her own. She posts on social media. “I’m safe,” she claims.

But her mother doesn't buy it. Neither do her friends.

What really happened to her? And where is she now?

Enter Shane Morris, a struggling journalist who once called Thailand home. He speaks the language. He knows the culture. But he’s still just an outsider, sent to unravel an intricate web of rumors and lies.

Navigating a land of corrupt officials, seedy motels, and ancient temples, Shane is pulled into the heart of Thailand’s shadowy underbelly. With each step toward the truth, he draws the attention of Kittisak Wanchai, a real-estate tycoon with criminal ties and a he’s the missing woman’s father.

From the neon-soaked streets of Bangkok to the sacred shrines of the north, Shane is forced to confront the darkest parts of himself, and his past, to put the pieces together.

Surrounded on all sides by corruption and deceit, Shane’s world will be stripped bare and he’ll be left with a devastating loyalty to the living, or devotion to the dead.

Eastern Shadows is a gritty, haunting reflection on the duality of human nature, and the lengths one is willing to go to hide their darkest secrets, all while peeling back the layers lurking beneath the Land of Smiles.

"Eastern Shadows" is a great debut, a masterfully written mystery.

It's a plot-driven book, but suffiient attention has been paid to characters.

Long ago, I once read what is the difference between a "detective story (/novel)" & a "thriller" … in a thriller, the reader knows from the start who has committed the crime, & sees the detective unfold it. In a detective story, the reader at any point, only knows as much as the detective, & only proceeds with him/her. This would fit more in the second category.

Content warning:

lot of violence, some of it quite gory

Settings & themes:

It's based in 2-3 cities in central & northern Thailand & some Wats, & did a great job of including totally realistic circumstances, holding up the fractures in Americal teen culture, the fearsome face of Thai underworld, & the exceedingly flawed nature of relationships.

Plot:

The plot is well-developed, although it is not apparent in the first third of the book "Giant". It feels a bit confusing, as it is not clear why the hero is following the leads that he is. The second third "Tiger" is racy & action packed.

The last third, "Demon" is gloomy & at some points, I felt like I lost all hope in humanity.

However, the climax & resolution is good, & yet realistic.

Characters:

Characters are believable & relateable. They're all flawed, some to an extreme degree. Arrogance of long term tourists/ short term immigrants to an Eastern country is also held up. The unique blends of positives & negatives of Thai cities is also shown. It is, however, too much of a stretch how miraculous the physical performance of the (non-millitary trained) hero & the superpower of unregulated painkillers is shown to be … & it is difficult to believe.

The hero is introspective, & also mulls on the personality elements of other characters.

The minor villain, the assistant police chief, has been written very straightforward to eleicit hatred of readers, all other characters, even minor ones, have dimensions & shades.

Writing & flow:

The pacing is good, the references to the Thai cultural elements are simply explained & well-ingrained in the flow of the book.

Main plus points: action-packed, many snippets of Thailand & Thai people, bold naked look at the filthiness present in our society & minds, some insights about human behaviour & accidental follies

Main minus points: Hero too muscle-powered for someone completely amateur, slightly long-winded narrative in some places

I really liked the end.

On the whole, Why readers of mystery read mystery … is the sense of thrill + the sense of closure. There's a poetic justice at the end of a mystery (not necessarily at the end of a psychological/ psychopathic thriller, & never at the end of a horror). This novel closed very satisfyingly, though not with a happy ending.

This book got under my skin in a quiet way. Eastern Shadows isn’t a loud, twist-packed thriller, but it knows exactly how to build tension. The setting is vivid, almost like a character itself, and the atmosphere holds a weight that never really lets go.

The main character feels real — flawed, unsure, and human. That makes the moments of danger and doubt cut deeper, because you believe he’s just trying to keep his head above water. The story takes its time, sometimes a little more than I wanted, but there’s a steady pull that keeps you turning the pages.

What I liked most is how it balances mystery with emotion. It’s not just about what happened, but why people do the things they do — and how far they’ll go to hide them.

Thoughtful, moody, and memorable. A strong pick if you like thrillers with depth and a sense of place.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this. An expatriate journalist in Thailand, haunted over his past, takes on the missing persons case of a lost woman, which leads him into the Thai underworld. The atmosphere of the locations is thick and detailed. It’s clear the author knows his locations well. Think Raymond Chandler meets Joseph Conrad. Peter Nordgren has crafter a taut and intense thriller. Eastern Shadows is highly recommended, and I certainly plan to keep an eye out for his future work.

“The truth is fear...It is suffering…It is salvation…It is freedom. These are the truths you seek.”

I wasn't planning to dive into an ARC so soon, especially with exams around the corner, but the book cover with the thai neon sign in the email was too intriguing to resist. As a fan of Asian thrillers, I was excited to explore my first Thai thriller.

Eastern Shadows follows Shane, a determined journalist who travels to Thailand to uncover the truth behind Ploy's disappearance.

The story takes its time to build up, and while I was initially expecting a faster pace, I appreciated how the author wove together Shane's investigation and interactions with the people involved in the case. However, I did find myself guessing some of the major plot twists, which took away from the suspense.

One of the standout aspects for me was Ploy's mother, her character resonated deeply, especially the complexities of parental expectations and control that many Asian readers can relate to. On the other hand, I struggled to connect with Shane's character, partly due to some inconsistencies in his portrayal that also affected the overall narrative.

The incorporation of Thai language added a layer of authenticity, but I think the author could have done a better job of balancing it to avoid confusion for readers who aren't familiar with the language. As someone who's watched Thai dramas, I was able to follow along, but I can see how it might be challenging for others.

Fah's character, on the other hand, was a highlight or rather, a lowlight. I found myself intensely disliking her, and the author did a great job of portraying her complexities. The romance subplot didn't quite work for me, and I think the story could have benefited from focusing more on the mystery.

The ending was— again very predictable from my perspective. Although I did enjoy it but I wished things were different. I guess I came into this one looking for more shadowy, shady, gruesome plot twists but it’s a pretty linear narrative plot line. You’ll definitely enjoy it if you’re into noir, mysteries and of course Thai scenery.

Despite predicting some of the plot twists, I still enjoyed the ride. Eastern Shadows is an impressive debut, and I wish the author all the best for future releases.

“Eastern Shadows,” Peter Nordgren’s debut novel, weaves an intricate tale that captivates from the outset. The story's vivid imagery and rich characters immerse readers in a world of mystery and crime. Nordgren’s prose explores complex themes, drawing readers into the darkness of his characters’ pasts and the challenges of their present. This narrative is more than a story; it’s a profound exploration of human resilience and the quest for identity.

The story centres on Shane, an investigative reporter, who embarks on a compelling journey to unravel the puzzle surrounding the disappearance of a woman named Ploy who was volunteering in Thailand. Driven by a relentless pursuit of the truth, Shane navigates a complex web of personal connections and hidden stories. His investigative work leads him to interview Ploy’s close friends, each providing fragmented pieces of her life that hint at her struggles and aspirations. He traverses crucial locations, from the vibrant streets of Bangkok, where night markets buzz with life, and bars sell more than liquor, to the quiet of the countryside. With every conversation and visit, Shane inches closer to uncovering Ploy’s fate.

Shane is a complex and determined protagonist, propelled by an overwhelming need to locate Ploy, regardless of the personal costs involved. His quest, however, often borders on recklessness—he plunges into dangerous situations that others would avoid, stepping into the shadows of the city where even the bravest hesitate. As he explores the mystery surrounding Ploy’s disappearance, this investigation transforms into a relentless mission. Shane is resolute; he will not return home until he has uncovered her fate, whether it be a joyful reunion or a tragic discovery. With each passing day, the stakes grow higher as bodies start to accumulate around him, each one a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in his pursuit. Meanwhile, the threats against his life escalate, yet Shane remains undeterred. He presses on through chaos and fear, a reckless adventurer determined to bring back the truth about Ploy, come what may. Through his thoughts and dialogue, the reader can appreciate the nuances of his motivations, revealing not just what he does but why he feels compelled to behave in certain ways, ultimately enhancing the reader’s understanding of his journey. As far as action heroes go, Shane may not be among the most legendary, but he certainly holds his own!

The novel boasts a cast of well-crafted characters, each with their own complex backgrounds and motivations. Among them are several formidable villains, whose nefarious schemes and chilling intentions create an atmosphere thick with tension. These antagonists are not merely one-dimensional; they are intricate figures whose cunning plans and dark desires keep the protagonist—and the readers—constantly on their toes. The mysterious man Shane names "One-Hair" gives the story a sense of foreboding, as does Benz, who is a powerful gangster and one who you would not want to cross. But it is Kittisak Wanchai, a successful businessman, that really snags Shane’s interest, for Kittisak is Ploy’s father—although he might not know it yet. All the antagonists bring a chilling fear to the narrative, each exuding a certain menace. In the cases of One-Hair and Benz, they are not afraid to get their hands dirty, further intensifying the tension.

The rampant corruption that festers within the police force, combined with their alarming ineptitude, poses a substantial barrier for Shane as he desperately seeks to locate Ploy. Despite Shane’s heartfelt pleas and his deep-seated concerns laid bare to Chongrak, the imposing and rigid police chief, instead of helping, she coldly discourages Shane from following any promising leads regarding Ploy’s disappearance, only serving to ignite his resolve to uncover the truth on his own. Shane’s sense of frustration with the police is palpable. He navigates through a system that seems more interested in serving itself than serving the community. With each interaction, the indifference and incompetence of the authorities underscore the harsh reality: Shane knows he cannot depend on the police to aid in the search for Ploy.

Nordgren has masterfully crafted the vibrancy of Thailand, captivating readers into its breathtaking landscapes while simultaneously unveiling the darker, more sinister aspects lurking beneath the surface. The stark contrast between the opulent houses and business buildings of the wealthy elite and the dilapidated homes of the impoverished is vividly illustrated, highlighting the socioeconomic divides that shape the lives of the inhabitants. The bustling train station, characterised by its weathered benches and the chaotic throngs of people, stands in sharp relief against the peaceful landscape of the Thai countryside, creating a compelling backdrop for the narrative’s unfolding drama. In this setting, the local school emerges as a beacon of youthful energy and ambition, a dynamic hub of learning and aspiration. It provides a grounding point for the characters amidst the surrounding chaos, symbolising hope and potential in an otherwise tumultuous environment. Each location is meticulously detailed, with vibrant descriptions that add layers of depth and authenticity to the story. This striking juxtaposition between the sprawling urban landscape and the serene rural settings not only enhances the storytelling but also brings to life the intricate complexities of the land—and its diverse people—drawing readers deeper into the heart of Thailand.

There is no doubt that Nordgren is a masterful storyteller. He expertly weaves intricate plot twists that leave readers on the edge of their seats. With each chapter, he skilfully introduces unexpected turns and suspenseful moments, keeping the reader guessing about the outcome right up until the final pages. His ability to craft suspenseful narratives makes it difficult to depict the direction of the story, making for an exhilarating reading experience filled with surprises at every turn.

If you’re a fan of adrenaline-fueled crime thrillers that grip you from the very first page and keep you reading through the night, then “Eastern Shadows” by Peter Nordgren is an essential addition to your reading list. Nordgren’s remarkable talent for developing psychologically nuanced and thrilling characters ensures that his work stands out. This book comes highly recommended.

If you’re someone looking for your next mystery suspense thriller, then Eastern Shadows by Peter Nordgren, set in the mystery-steeped Thailand, is a novel that you’re going to want to check out. Full of intrigue that will draw you in, Eastern Shadows details the story of a young woman’s mysterious disappearance, and the fallout that takes place after. Beware, though, some are willing to kill to keep their secrets...secret.

Eastern Shadows catches readers' eyes with a cover that depicts a nighttime scene from Thailand. At the top of the cover are small orbs that represent the stars in the sky. As your eye is drawn down, you get the “light pollution” of the big city as author Nordgren gives readers a city skyline that paints the background with city lights. You see towering skyscrapers with some tropical trees sprinkled in.

As you come forward in the cover, author Nordgren gives readers powerlines that further emphasize the urban elements of Eastern Shadows. To the right of the cover is what appears to be a shadowed statue or temple. While in the foreground is what appears to be a small motel with a single light on, with the name of it in Thai.

Eastern Shadows kicks things off with a hotel owner and manager trying to check on a young woman in one of the rooms. It seems rather mundane, but author Nordgren is delicately setting the stage for something more coming just around the corner.

Part of you will think that the young woman he’s trying to do housekeeping for her room might be in trouble. But author Nordgren moves Eastern Shadows forward and indicates to us that, as far as we know, she’s not. In this first chapter, we’re introduced to one character who will play an important role later, and Ploy Soikham. The young woman who will soon go missing and be the focus of Eastern Shadows.

As Eastern Shadows moves forward, author Nordgren introduces us to the character who will be the focus and driving character of the story, Shane Morris. Shane is an out-of-work journalist hoping to finally catch a break with an interview that he has scheduled for the day we meet him. While his “working” lunch doesn’t pan out the way that he hopes, he does land a job opportunity.

Sumali, the owner of The Lotus, is concerned about her missing daughter, Ploy. The pieces of the puzzle are starting to make themselves known. We can definitely say that things are starting to get interesting.

Sumali offers Shane an employment opportunity that he’s hard-pressed to turn down, and he knows it. Sumali believes that something terrible has happened to her daughter. Shane, on the other hand? He thinks that this is going to be a quick search and find, which will turn into a nice paid-for vacation. What he discovers...things are more complicated than they seem.

As Eastern Shadows progresses, author Nordgren whisks readers out of the United States all the way to Thailand. There, we move around the country with Shane as he gradually begins to learn that things are not what they seem. What actually happened to Ploy? Where he once thought that this was going to be an easy thing...is proving to have its many hidden dangers.

Eastern Shadows is told from the third-person POV, and it moves at a slower pace as the story progresses overall. Throughout Eastern Shadows, there are bursts of drama that push the story to pick up the pace. Then things slow back down as the drama gradually rebuilds, as Shane finds himself in various chaotic and typically dangerous situations.

Now, what murder mystery suspense novel is complete without some bodies dropping? Well, author Nordgren gives us exactly that. Wherever Shane goes, trouble is quick to follow. Intending to meet up at a statue with someone who has information at dusk? Think someone is going to turn up dead? You’d be right! Think that Shane is going to cross paths with some people he shouldn’t have? You’d be right again!

When it comes to Shane as an overall character, readers may not find him to be the most likable, but he comes off as a flawed character who is realistic. We think that readers will appreciate Shane’s dogmatic determination to find Ploy and to find out what happened to her. There are “red herrings” along the way, but while he gets distracted here and there, his unrelenting persistence is admirable to say the least.

Eastern Shadows is set in Thailand and visits a number of small towns/cities and big cities. However, if you’re looking to really be steeped in the overall atmosphere of the “Land of Smiles,” you’ll find yourself disappointed. Eastern Shadows focuses primarily on Shane’s quest of discovering what happened to Ploy and staying alive. It would have been nice to get more of the atmospheric feel of this distant location, but that’s not how things play out with this particular novel.

The way that Eastern Shadows flows is an ebb and flow like the tide. As the tide comes in, the drama builds. Once the drama has played out, the tide flows back out. But don’t let that make you complacent with this book. The closer that Shane gets to the truth, the more that things are going to get ramped up. The latter quarter of the book will really bring the drama, the tension, and a healthy dose of suspense.

Wondering if you’re going to get all the answers you’re looking for? Yes, and no. You’ll be left with questions as to what happens next with certain characters. Ones that you hope meet their downfall, well, most will. Others? Well, karma may have to wait for another opportunity to take a bite.

When it comes to the ending of Eastern Shadows, you’re going to be left relatively satisfied with how things play out. You’ll have answers for the majority of the key players in the novel. The big question that will loom will be whether Eastern Shadows is a standalone novel for author Nordgren or whether Shane will become a private investigator and continue down similar paths as this one. Only time will tell.

If you’re a reader who enjoys twisted suspense novels set in foreign lands, then you honestly can’t miss with Eastern Shadows. Gritty, suspenseful, and a nice balance of light and dark concerning humanity, Eastern Shadows will take you on quite the ride as you strive to find the truth.

Pros:

Interesting storyline
Unique characters
Suspenseful
Overall satisfying ending

Cons:

Lacks Thailand’s unique atmosphere
There were places where details could have been left out that would have allowed the story to flow faster.

Cover Score: 8.8/10
Overall Book Score: 8.5/10

In Eastern Shadows, we follow an unemployed journalist named Shane as he travels to Thailand in search of a missing girl. He is looking for Ploy Soikham, whose mother turns to him for help because of his personal connection to the country. Shane once lived in Thailand, speaks the language, and is somewhat familiar with the culture. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes a tangled web of deceit and corruption. There is far more to Ploy’s disappearance than meets the eye. Will Shane be able to find her before it’s too late?

Opinion:
This book is written in third-person limited, told from Shane’s perspective. I find that this point of view creates both suspense and intimacy with the main character. The reader experiences events through Shane’s eyes, gaining insight into his thoughts and feelings during the investigation. With each new discovery, we see how he connects the clues and interprets what’s happening. This perspective kept me wanting more and eager to figure out the next steps alongside him.

The tone of Eastern Shadows can be described as tense and introspective. From the very beginning, there’s a sense of unease that mirrors Shane’s cautious search for the truth. As we learn about Ploy and the events surrounding her disappearance, tension builds between friends and within the community. Both Shane and Ploy are forced to look inward and reflect on their choices, which brings emotional depth to the story. I think this introspective approach helps balance some of the novel’s heavier themes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the portrayal of Eastern vs. Western perspectives and the strong sense of cultural awareness between Thailand and the U.S. Through Shane’s viewpoint, we see Thailand with both admiration and an awareness of how easily misunderstandings can occur across cultures. Everyday rituals and spiritual elements are woven naturally throughout the story. It’s clear the author paid careful attention to creating a respectful and authentic representation of life in Thailand. As a reader, I could tell a great deal of research went into avoiding stereotypes and showing both the wealthy and the poor sides of the country.

I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a suspenseful and culturally rich story. From the first chapter, I found myself eager to uncover the truth. You’ll feel as if you’re traveling alongside Shane through a foreign land, hoping to shed light on a mysterious disappearance.

Peter Nordgren’s Eastern Shadows unfolds as a gripping crime mystery set in Thailand’s bustling streets and shadowy back alleys. The story follows Shane Morris, a disillusioned journalist drawn into a desperate mother’s search for her missing daughter, Ploy. What begins as a reluctant favor becomes a labyrinth of lies, corruption, and guilt, leading Shane deep into Thailand’s underworld. The narrative moves between America and Thailand, weaving together lost souls, powerful tycoons, and the ghosts of past choices. It’s both a mystery and a meditation on how people lose themselves trying to do what’s right.

Nordgren’s writing is sharp, cinematic, and drenched in atmosphere. The sense of place is stunning. Bangkok hums with noise, and the atmosphere feels thick. The pacing hit just right, with slow burns and sharp turns that caught me off guard. I loved the dialogue. It sounded real, sometimes harsh, often sad, always human. But what really stuck with me was the contrast between the external chaos and Shane’s quiet unraveling. He’s not a hero, not really. He’s a man scraping at the edges of his own failures, using someone else’s tragedy as a way to find purpose again. It hit harder than I expected.

At times, the prose is very detailed, but even in those moments, the emotion carried me through. The scenes of Ploy’s fear and confusion are haunting. The cultural texture feels lived-in, not like research notes. You can tell Nordgren knows Thailand, not just its beauty, but its rough corners. The deeper I got, the more I realized this wasn’t just a thriller. It’s about guilt, redemption, and the ghosts we make for ourselves. I felt uneasy, angry, hopeful, sometimes all at once.

I’d recommend Eastern Shadows to readers who like their mysteries rich with grit and emotion. It’s perfect for fans of atmospheric crime fiction, travelers drawn to Southeast Asia, or anyone who likes a story that makes them think about the mess inside people’s hearts. It’s dark and heavy, sure, but it’s worth the ride.

A thrilling tale of international intrigue, Eastern Shadows takes the reader on a suspense-filled ride through Thailand’s underbelly. A missing woman and a worried mother send one man on an action-packed mission to uncover shocking secrets from their past and present. From the compelling first chapter through to the final shocking revelations, author Nordgren’s page-turning plot leads to one surprising twist after another.

When struggling journalist Shane Morris is enlisted to travel to Thailand to search for a friend’s out-of-touch daughter, his expectation for a reasonable explanation quickly crumbles. The fun expense-paid trip that he initially envisions becomes a journey to the seedy, corrupt, criminal side of the country. What happened to Ploy? Video clips on social media indicate that she needed a break from her life, that she is fine, and no one should look for her. But both her mother and Shane sense something is off.

When his search for Ploy results in the murder of possible leads, the investigation takes an ominous detour, putting Shane in danger and throwing him under the bus as a suspect. Not knowing whom to believe and whom to trust, he is dragged deep into the depravity of human nature as he navigates the cities and towns of the country where he once worked as an English teacher. Shane’s determination and resilience as he perseveres to complete the job he has been paid for highlight his integrity as a human being, in contrast to the sinister forces at play.

Author Nordgren’s knowledge of the language, culture, and landscape of Thailand shine through the pages in this gritty novel laced with realism. Eastern Shadows is a gripping missing person story in a locale that is both exotic and sordid, with a mix of honorable and despicable characters. The no-holds barred violence and vivid descriptions create an atmospheric read, the setting as dark as the plot and characters. If you love international noir, you’ll want to get your hands on this book.

Eastern Shadows by Peter Nordgren is the kind of book that grabs you from page one and doesn’t let go until the very end. It starts with a missing girl in Thailand – a mystery that feels urgent, raw, and real. As I read, I could feel the heavy Bangkok air, hear the street noises, and see the worry in a mother’s eyes . This book doesn’t just tell a story – it puts you inside it.

Shane, the main character, is what makes this book so powerful. His journey isn’t just about helping find a missing girl – it’s about facing his own past and the memories he left behind. I felt connected to him because we all have moments where we must return to something we thought we had left forever. His courage and doubts felt very human, and that made the story hit even harder .

The writing is sharp and emotional. Peter Nordgren doesn’t rush – he lets the fear and suspense grow slowly until you can’t look away. By the time Shane decides to fly back to Thailand, I was holding my breath, ready to see what he would discover. Every page felt like a step deeper into the mystery, and I loved that thrilling tension .

I would definitely recommend Eastern Shadows to readers who love books that mix mystery, travel, and emotions. This is not just a story about a disappearance – it’s about courage, hope, and finding meaning when life feels stuck. If you want a book that keeps you turning pages late into the night, this one is perfect for you 📚✨..

A missing-person case becomes a descent into moral darkness in Nordgren’s haunting thriller. When down-on-his-luck journalist Shane Morris agrees to find a missing Thai-American woman, he’s pulled into Bangkok’s shadowy underworld, where every truth hides a lie. Ploy’s haunting videos insist she’s safe, but her fear says otherwise. As Shane tracks her through backstreet motels and glittering high-rises, he exposes a powerful man’s secret, and a reflection of his own moral collapse.

Nordgren’s writing is clear-eyed and precise, capturing a Thailand both luminous and broken. As Shane digs deeper, the investigation becomes less about rescue and more about facing his own moral collapse. Like the best noir, the novel is as much about the investigator as the crime. Shane’s cynicism and vulnerability make him a compelling lens through which to view a country alive with contradiction—where kindness coexists with exploitation, and loyalty can be as dangerous as betrayal. Ploy, Sumali, and Kittisak are drawn with equal care: the runaway searching for belonging, the mother consumed by regret, and the father whose success masks rot.

At once a mystery and a meditation on loss, the novel balances tension with tenderness. By the end, the truth offers no victory—only a harsh and irreversible reckoning. A dark, atmospheric thriller steeped in mystery, moral tension, and haunting beauty.

Eastern Shadows pulled me in from the first page with its noir-style suspense. The story begins with the disappearance of a young woman in Thailand and quickly expands into a layered mystery that moves between Bangkok’s shadowy backstreets and the quiet desperation of an American journalist trying to piece it all together.

Peter Nordgren’s writing is rich with sensory detail and authentic touches that make Thailand feel alive in all its contradictions: beautiful and dangerous, spiritual and corrupt, ancient and modern. The characters are complex and flawed, especially Shane Morris, the reporter drawn back into the investigative work he thought he’d left behind. His uneasy alliance with Sumali, the missing girl’s mother, gives the novel its emotional backbone.

At times the pacing slows a bit in the middle as the investigation deepens, but Nordgren’s command of atmosphere and his empathy for his characters keep the tension simmering. By the final chapters, the threads come together in a way that’s both satisfying and unsettling.

If you enjoy dark, character-driven thrillers with an international scope Eastern Shadows is well worth the read. It’s filled with mystery and action that keeps the reader wanting to turn the page.

I was provided an ARC of this work by the author. The opinions expressed here are my own.

“Eastern Shadows” by Peter Nordgren is a thriller that delves into the criminal underworld of Thailand, with the disappearance of nineteen-year-old Ploy Soikham at its core. Ploy, who spent her childhood years in America, returns to her homeland only to vanish, causing her mother, Sumali, to seek the services of the one person she knows—journalist Shane Morris, who is struggling with his freelance career.

The plot clearly relies on Shane, who gets caught up in trying to solve a mystery in a foreign, corrupt system. Shane's investigations take him into the world of wealthy criminal Ploy's father, Kittisak Wanchai. The narrative is not a fast-paced thriller. It is deliberate and slow, focusing more on detailed descriptions and establishing the location than on quick, continuous plot developments. While the novel employs multiple narrative points of view, this approach could be irritating for some readers who would prefer more information about the primary character. Of course, the novel does offer a fairly generic tale of a gritty journalist fighting crime in any Southeast Asian country.

I'm calling this Thailand Noir. It is gritty and full of corrupt officials, seedy motels, and dangerous situations with violence always at hand or nearby.

The protagonist, Shane Morris, is a struggling journalist who agrees to go to Thailand and search for a missing woman. He figures it will be a relaxing, paid vacation. Wow, was he wrong! Shane essentially becomes a private investigator, working with an old friend, Hall, who is the brawn, complementing Shane's brains.

I thought the story was slow to capture me, but it became very fast-moving and hard to put down. I liked that Shane was flawed and dealing with many emotions. And his reflections on the difference between Thai culture and U.S. culture was interesting and added to the story. I did not like that many of the Thai words were not explained. I had to Google them.

I recommend the story. It gets a solid 4 stars.

As far as debut novels go, this was pretty good! The hook is intriguing, and I enjoyed going on a tour of Thailand. This tour was the book’s main strength. I often felt like I was right there with the characters, experiencing Thailand at ground level. The main character is well developed, but the side characters could use a little more depth. Characters would sometimes take a turn that I did not feel was set up, and occasionally a character would disappear, leaving the reader with an unsatisfying end to their arc. I mostly liked the main character, but the “gumshoe detective” persona was laid on a little thick at times. Referring to a magazine as a “rag” while browsing the internet on his smart phone felt discordant. That being said… this was a fun romp in a place I don’t often visit in the media I consume. A little pulp can be fun. I’m on board to see what this author comes up with next. Recommend!

A tense, action-filled thriller that showcases the best and worst of Thailand and introduces the reader to a rarely seen portion of the Thai underworld. The characters are realistic, shadowy, and multi-layered. The action kept this reader on her toes, never knowing what direction Mr. Nordgren was going next. There were fights, deaths, blood, betrayals, and everything in between. About the time I thought I knew where the story was going, there would be another curveball, and I would find the story going in a different direction. At one point late in the story, Shane thinks about the possibility of becoming a PI when he returns to the States. I would love to see Mr. Nordgren make this a long-running series. I think Shane is a great character, and Mr. Nordgren's writing would lend itself to a series. I highly recommend this book for fans of thrillers and crime dramas. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up Eastern Shadows and I feared I would not be able to get into it, but once I started, I couldn’t stop reading. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a full-on binge read—I even found myself canceling plans just to keep going.

The atmosphere is gritty and immersive, pulling you deep into Thailand’s hidden corners. The twists are sharp, unexpected, and perfectly timed, and the characters feel consistent and real—you can’t help but feel close to them as the story unfolds. The pacing is smooth and steady, making it easy to follow while still building tension that kept me hooked until the very end.

This is a strong, haunting debut that exceeded my expectations, and I’ll definitely be watching for more from this author. Highly recommended if you enjoy noir, suspense, or thrillers that keep you on edge.

This is an outstanding mystery thriller. Shane Morris is a freelance investigative journalist, who’s hoping to find regular, full time employment. He sets up a job interview at the Thai Lotus, a restaurant that he enjoys going to. When he gets there, even though it’s supposed to be open, the doors are locked. He knocks on the door and is greeted by the harried owner Sumali. She apologizes for being forgetful but Shane suspects there’s a reason for her behaviour. The person he was supposed to meet with doesn’t show, so he chats with Sumali and learns that her daughter, Ploy, has disappeared in Thailand where she was teaching ESL. Sumali offers Shane a job: she wants him to travel to Thailand and find out where Ploy is. That’s where the twisty, turny mystery and intrigue begins. A book definitely worth reading!

I received an ARC and this is my personal opinion.

Eastern Shadows by Peter Nordgren is a story about Shane Morrison, a journalist down on his luck, turned reluctant investigator. Shane goes on a hunt to find an acquaintance’s missing daughter in Thailand. Assuming that the search was going to be a piece of cake and he can enjoy a paid vacation, Shane agrees.

But as soon as he lands in Thailand , Shane understands that he has gotten himself involved in something way more scary and risky than he assumed. Shane risks his own life. Gets terribly banged up. But, ends up finding the truth.

Eastern Shadows is a gritty adventure, tense and moody. A tad too long but doesn’t drag and is thoroughly enjoyable. Peter Nordgren has described the seedier underbelly of Thailand’s crime universe in detail. This is a raw, real and readable story.

Eastern Shadows is a gripping, immersive thriller that perfectly balances suspense, character depth, and cultural nuance.

Shane Morris, the journalist drawn back to Thailand, is compellingly flawed and driven, his past experiences giving weight to every decision he makes. The tension builds expertly as he navigates a world of corruption, hidden agendas, and the shadows of human nature. The book’s settings from neon-lit Bangkok streets to tranquil northern temples are vividly rendered, making the environment feel like a living, breathing part of the story.

What stands out is how the novel explores loyalty, moral compromise, and the duality of human nature, while keeping the pace taut and the mystery compelling. It’s a thrilling read that lingers long after the last page

I found myself reading this with a frown on my face as I continued through this somewhat quirky novel. An out of work reporter is engaged to go to Thailand in search of a missing teenage girl. It took me longer than usual to read this book but I was glad that I stuck with it. If you are looking for an unusual mystery book with plenty of twists and turns, then this is for you.

I couldn’t put this book down. Eastern Shadows had everything I love in a mystery — an atmospheric setting, a flawed but compelling main character, and most of all, twists that kept catching me off guard. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another reveal pulled the rug out from under me. The way the story tied the mystery to Thailand’s culture and history made it feel layered and real, not just another crime novel. Dark, surprising, and totally immersive — highly recommend.

This is the debut novel of the author! It's an action packed thriller. It was like an action movie being played in front of my eyes! Actually I would love this novel to be made into a film 😀

It gives you a tour of the dark underbelly of Thailand! It's raw, the characters are flawed and real!

Thanks BookSiren for the early copy!

While I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book, Eastern Shadows quickly became a binge read for me! As someone who’s never been to Thailand, the descriptions in this book did an amazing job at bringing the scenery and atmosphere to life. It is a slow-burn type mystery but one that keeps you anxious to see what Shane discovers when he returns to Thailand.

Eastern Shadows kept me guessing the whole time. Peter did an excellent job of describing life and culture in Thailand. Reading the vivid descriptions and details immediately brought me back to the time I spent in Asia. It was a wonderful journey to relive while trying to solve a mystery!

Fantastic debut novel! The writing reminds me of a classic noir novel, with a modern flair. The author was able to create both a familiar and curious cast of characters that had me invested in the plot right away. The tale of mystery, love, and searching for home should not be missed.
