Not-So-Famous Dog Tales #1

All Dogs Go to 7-Eleven

Rate this book
The Barkley family—Steve, Emily, Nim, and Bastian—meet Bruno, a German Shepherd who has a wild tale to tell about rescuing people from a burning building. Unfortunately, he was separated from his human during the fire, and now he's looking for him. The family and the shepherd combine their wits and talents to look for the missing human.

They also search for the person who set the fire so he can be brought to justice. With lots of laughs because of "Dad" jokes and plenty of homeschool humor from Mom and the kids, this adventure is great for the whole family.

If there's a dog on the cover I'm most likely in, however had this not been a hoopla bonus borrow I'm sure it wouldn't have crossed my reading path.

Bruno is a talking dog, but only Steve can hear him. So fun!

I can't be alone in thinking people wish their pet could talk. I'd love to know what my dog, Arnie, has to say to me. He's super nosey, always patrolling the yard and staring at the neighbors, so he'd probably have stories to tell. Although he would probably most likely just tell me to shut my trap since I talk to him nonstop all day long. 😂

Anyway, there was a fire in the building that Bruno lived in, so he, along with Steve and family, help solve the case of how the fire started.

Nothing groundbreaking, the mystery was okay. But I should probably be thinking with a youngsters mind and not an adult one. It has some funny dad jokes that'll probably have the kids chuckling or, more likely, rolling their eyes.

Narration notes:
He did a good job. Gave the dog his own voice.

It was very interesting, and pretty good. The AI pictures though kept messing up the dad's jawline.

The set up was muddled in the beginning - the introductory chapters felt as if someone had removed pages and I was missing some explanation - both of character exposition and back story. After a while, though, the plot hit its groove and moved on at a good clip. The characters had a lot of quirky idiosyncrasies that made them stand out interestingly; I'd remember them from book-to-book in a series.

This was a cute enough story I think that it could be a really cute series. It had my children and I entertain. It had us all guessing what would come next, for the most part it was a good little book, but not our favorite or life changing about it.

"All Dogs Go to 7-Eleven" by Bryan Davis is a heartwarming and humorous adventure that centers on the Barkley family and their newfound canine companion, Bruno. The novel masterfully blends elements of mystery, comedy, and family values, creating an engaging narrative that appeals to readers of all ages. Davis crafts a story that is not only entertaining but also deeply resonant, exploring themes of loyalty, justice, and the importance of family.

The plot revolves around the Barkley family—Steve, Emily, Nim, and Bastian—who encounter Bruno, a German Shepherd with an extraordinary story. Bruno recounts his heroic efforts in rescuing people from a burning building, a tale that immediately captivates the Barkleys. However, Bruno's main quest is to find his human, from whom he was separated during the chaos of the fire. The Barkleys, with their unique skills and unwavering support, decide to help Bruno in his search. This sets the stage for a series of adventures filled with both laughter and suspense as they navigate the challenges of locating Bruno's human and uncovering the truth behind the fire.

Each member of the Barkley family brings a unique dynamic to the group. Steve, the father, is the source of endless "Dad" jokes, providing comic relief and a lighthearted atmosphere even in tense situations. Emily, the mother, is a homeschooling extraordinaire, infusing the family's adventures with educational moments and practical knowledge. Nim, the older child, is intelligent and resourceful, often using her sharp wit to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles. Bastian, the younger sibling, is enthusiastic and curious, adding a sense of wonder and excitement to their quest. Bruno, the German Shepherd, is loyal, brave, and determined, serving as the emotional core of the story. His unwavering commitment to finding his human drives the plot forward and inspires the Barkleys to persevere. The relationships between the characters are richly developed, showcasing their love, trust, and mutual respect. Their interactions are filled with warmth and humor, making them a relatable and endearing family.

One of the central themes of "All Dogs Go to 7-Eleven" is loyalty. Bruno's unwavering devotion to his human is a testament to the powerful bond between humans and animals. His determination to find his human, despite the odds, highlights the depth of his loyalty and the strength of his character. The Barkleys also demonstrate loyalty, both to Bruno and to each other. They rally around Bruno, offering their support and resources to help him achieve his goal. Their loyalty to each other is evident in their willingness to work together, overcome challenges, and stand by one another through thick and thin.

Another significant theme is justice. The Barkleys and Bruno are not only searching for Bruno's human but also seeking to uncover the truth behind the fire. They believe that the person responsible for setting the fire should be brought to justice, and they are willing to risk their own safety to ensure that justice is served. This theme underscores the importance of accountability and the need to stand up against wrongdoing. The pursuit of justice adds a layer of suspense to the story, as the Barkleys and Bruno must navigate dangerous situations and confront the person responsible for the fire.

The tone of the novel is lighthearted and humorous, making it an enjoyable read for the whole family. Davis infuses the story with plenty of "Dad" jokes and homeschool humor, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere. However, the novel also tackles serious themes such as loyalty, justice, and the importance of family, adding depth and substance to the narrative. This balance of humor and heart makes "All Dogs Go to 7-Eleven" a memorable and impactful read.

In closing, "All Dogs Go to 7-Eleven" is a delightful and engaging adventure that celebrates the power of family, loyalty, and justice. Bryan Davis crafts a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of heartwarming tales. If you enjoyed this book, I recommend reading "The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Burnford or "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, both of which explore similar themes of friendship, loyalty, and the bond between humans and animals.

Cute and quirky, especially if you like dogs. My 7-year-old and I listened to the audiobook together. The first chapter or two were kind of confusing until the reader is introduced to all the characters and the mystery in the story begins to take shape. My daughter was playing on the floor when we first started listening but was sitting by the phone only listening to the story by the end. She wants to read the next one in the series.

I loved the story and the narrator!! It did take a little bit to get the plot going, as some reviews said, it seemed like some things were cut that would explain a little more. But either way, the story got going around half way and I LOVED it. Happy ending and shows what determination does with loyalty. This is a story the whole family and all age groups can enjoy, as I know, listening to it in the car with kids on the way to school. they loved it!

2.5 stars. Rather cute. A bit odd in that “dog-speak” is a language some people understand and can translate, to the possible extent of being used as a witness in court (with a translator.) otherwise, there’s nothing fantastical about this little mystery story. Personally I like the Ribsy stories by Cleary better, but it reminded me a bit of them.

I picked this up because the title made me chuckle. The story is a cute little mystery of a family helping a lost be united with his human. The writing is a bit stilted but still a fun cast of characters and intriguing mystery that little kids will probably get into.

Reminds me a bit of Dr. Doolittle in where a person can understand animals. I did like the idea of different dogs/animals speak in different ways but it was a bit too slow for me and not what I was thinking it would be.

This was such a fun YA book. Filled with lots of puns and "dad jokes" it kept what could've been a scary story upbeat. I would definitely recommend this for young readers or families looking for a nice family read!

Fun story but the world building is a bit lacking. There isn’t much explanation for some people understanding dogs (enough that one can be expected to testify in court) or the 7-Eleven night manager who seems to be shopping for a new job solving mysteries but not finding a good match. He’s tried to be a fire inspector and a (fake) detective agency reached out to offer him a job. His home schooling family is really leaning into conspiracy theory and weirdness stereotypes. I don’t know how much of this is bad writing versus children books authors not expecting as much critical thinking from their readers so they just focus on fun and have little concern for suspension of disbelief…

what a cute book, that filled the gap. The main family is homeschooled so that is always a plus for me. It had action and daring and a true life hero. Not to mention talking animals. A great family read.

My kids really enjoyed this book. They were sad that it came to an end and we are looking forward to the next in the series. As a parent, it was really nice to have a story about another homeschool family. Lol
