Love is messy … like Thanksgiving dinner.Wallace “Slapshot” Lemoille is big, broody, and allergic to holidays. Wendy “Sweet Potato” Keith is sunshine in human form … and obsessed with Thanksgiving.
The problem? He’s my best friend’s grumpy teammate, and I’m the girl who won’t stop bringing him pie. He refuses my charm, rolls his eyes at my holiday playlists, and acts like he’s immune to my sass.
Until a Thanksgiving storm strands us in the same cabin. One kitchen. One bed. Zero escape.
Now the grump with the filthy mouth and the wicked body has no choice but to put up with me—and the sparks between us burn hotter than the oven. He swears he doesn’t do holidays. I swear I’m not falling for a hockey player.
But one taste, one touch, one toe-curling kiss … and suddenly, the man who hates Thanksgiving is the one thing I can’t live without.
Slapshot & Sweet Potato is a laugh-out-loud, steamy Thanksgiving romance with grumpy/sunshine banter, small-town charm, forced proximity, and enough spice to heat up your holiday.

SLAPSHOT & SWEET POTATO is part of the multi-authored Love & Leftovers series. It's a short and steamy, instalove with an enemies-to-lovers vibe, opposites-attract, grumpy-sunshine, forced-proximity, curvy girl gets her hockey player Thanksgiving small-town romance. Wendy "SWEET POTATO" is a sassy, curvy, holiday-loving baker. Wallace "SLAPSHOT" is a hunky, somewhat grumpy, holiday grinch and professional hockey player. Their best friends are dating each other. He has been crushing on Wendy since he met her, but she thought he was arrogant, albeit a sexy hottie. Now, when they end up snowed-in, they realize they have more in common and it quickly gets hot and S-T-E-A-M-Y in his one-bed cabin.
"But what if I told you I think you’re perfect? Every curve, every roll, every dimple. What if I told you my only fear right now is getting you off so monumentally you’ll choose me over any other man?”... um...YES PLEASE!! I loved this couple. Their banter was hysterical, the chemistry was hot 🔥 hot 🔥 hot🔥, and the ending was so happy.
"And now my hormones are doing jazzhands" might be one of my favorite quotes ever in a romance novel. I absolutely adored this couple and their story.
One blizzard. One bed. One chance to melt a heart of ice.
Wendy lives for holidays, hot cocoa, and baking pies that taste like home. Wallace dodges festive cheer like a slapshot to the face. She’s sunshine and sass, he’s broody and closed off. When a Thanksgiving storm strands them together in his cabin, it’s one kitchen, one bed, and no way to hide what’s been simmering beneath the surface.
Their snark turns tender, the tension gets hotter, and late-night confessions start pulling down walls. Under all that fame and gruffness, Wallace is still healing. Behind Wendy’s sparkle is a woman who’s more than sugar and smiles. As the snow piles up, so does the truth they’ve been avoiding.
Inside the tiny cabin, grief softens, trust deepens, and something real begins to take root. It's messy and unexpected, but when the fire dies down, what’s left is raw, steady, and impossible to fake.
Wendy learns how to stop performing happiness and start feeling it for real. Wallace lets someone see the cracks in his armor and realizes he's not as alone as he thought. Their spark grows into something solid, shifting from playful barbs to true emotional intimacy.
A steamy, instalove, grumpy sunshine, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, snowed in, small town, curvy girl, hockey, holiday romance, exploring grief, healing, vulnerability, self-acceptance, emotional intimacy, chosen family, and love. It’s about two people who built walls for different reasons learning to let each other in, finding connection in the chaos, and choosing something real when everything else feels uncertain. At its heart, it’s about being seen and loved anyway.
The Elevator Pitch: A grumpy hockey player and a sunshine-soaked baker are stranded in a cabin with one bed, a snowstorm outside, and way too much heat inside. Sparks fly, secrets slip, and what starts with snark turns into something tender and real. It’s steamy, swoony, and wrapped in the messy magic of unexpected love in a cozy, snowbound cabin.
Wendy “Sweet Potato” Keith is the kind of heroine you want as your best friend—warm, sassy, and bursting with holiday spirit. She owns the local bakery, Sweet Intentions, and basically bleeds cinnamon and cheer. Wallace “Slapshot” Lemoille? He’s her opposite in every way—a grumpy, brooding hockey player with a wicked mouth, an aversion to holidays, and muscles that could melt snow faster than a roaring fire.
They’ve been at odds for ages—she thinks he’s an arrogant jerk, he thinks she’s too sunshiney for her own good—but everyone around them knows that all that bickering is really just foreplay. When a Thanksgiving storm traps them together in his remote cabin, their enemies-to-lovers tension finally hits a full boil. One kitchen, one bed, and zero escape? Let’s just say sparks fly hotter than Wendy’s oven.
What makes Slapshot & Sweet Potato truly shine isn’t just the spice (though, trust me, it’s deliciously spicy). It’s the heart. When Wendy learns the real reason Wallace hates the holidays, everything changes. Suddenly, his walls start to crack, her empathy deepens, and their chemistry turns from teasing to tender. This is a story about grief, healing, and finding comfort in someone who sees past your defenses.
Engrid Eaves writes with humor, heat, and heart in perfect balance. She captures that magic of small towns, found family, and messy, real love—the kind that sneaks up on you when you least expect it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Slapshot & Sweet Potato is the perfect Thanksgiving romance—sweet, steamy, and packed with emotional depth. It’s for anyone who loves: ✔ Grumpy x sunshine ✔ Forced proximity (one bed!) ✔ Small town charm ✔ Healing through love ✔ Hockey players with big hearts and bad attitudes
So grab your pie, pull up a blanket, and let Wallace and Wendy remind you that sometimes the best things in life are a little messy—just like love, and Thanksgiving dinner.

Wallace and Wendy met the same night as Cass and Liam did. However, Wendy was still coming to terms with her decision to go forward with the final breakup with George. So, as she sat and talked about her ex the whole time Wallace was there listen and wondering how he could make the gorgeous woman fall for him. But here’s the thing, as much as Wendy wanted him right back she was feeling bumped, bruised, and vulnerable. Being in the back and forth relationship with George stripped her of her courage.
Yet, when you looked at Wendy you would see the polar opposite. But that is the persona she portrays because of her business. I mean what else would you expect from a baker who serves up sweets every day? However, nobody beyond Cass has seen behind her mask. The same goes for Wallace. She doesn’t know him either she’s misjudged him too. She only sees what the press puts out or what she saw at the club when beautiful women swarmed him. Which she doesn’t count herself as one.
He tries to be nice to her but all he gets in return is snark. Until the day before Thanksgiving when he comes to drop off the fundraiser check to her, and he is bombarded with fans wanting attention. Wendy actually rescues him. They go to her office in the back, and they talk. No like really talk. She asked him why he hates the holiday, and he asked why do you hate me? They both answer which may surprise you when you hear their answers. Now comes the problem a storm, a big one is due to hit them soon.
Wallace offers his help the next day to help in order to help keep her safe. She actually accepted. When they need to check on Wallace’s new cabin, and they get stuck the real truths come out, and you won’t be disappointed. Wallace has his own quiet charm, and it had been waiting for the right woman.
Wendy is the town’s baker, and the owner of Sweet Intentions. She’s baked a lot of pies for the Desperadoes’ youth league event, Pucks and Pies, but she’s not looking forward to delivering those pies, as her nemesis, Wallace Lemoille, will be there, and will likely take the opportunity to antagonize her.
She calls him Slapshot. He calls her Sweet Potato. Though it seems like they can’t stand each other—Wendy thinks he’s arrogant and insufferable, and he thinks Wendy is annoying and loves Thanksgiving (and holidays in general) too much. They always have a battle of words when they’re in each other’s orbit, but people around them see it as flirting.
Wendy is already licking her wounds after her ex, George, cheated on her, and she’s not looking for a hockey god to add her to his collection of one night stands. But when Wendy finds out the true reason Wallace hates Thanksgiving, things shift between them, and he offers himself and his big truck to help with groceries for the town’s Thanksgiving dinner. A bad snowstorm is rolling in, and what do you know, they have to hunker down in Wallace’s cabin, and…well, you can guess how things go from there.
Wallace is a conundrum; he really isn’t arrogant, he just likes pushing Wendy’s buttons, because he is falling in love with her, and he thinks she hates him. He’s not a one-night kind of guy. Once these two start talking to each other like friends instead of enemies, things really ramp up.
This is a nice, sweet and steamy story just in time for Thanksgiving, so curl up with cocoa or tea and enjoy this snack of a romance.

Slapshot & Sweet Potato by Engrid Eaves is part of the multi-author Love and Leftovers series. I am not sure what it was but I could not get into this story and had to force myself to make it to the ending. This is only my experience and I am am sure others will have loved this opposites attract romance between Wendy “Sweet Potato” Keith and Wallace “Slapshot” Lemoille. It was just not for me.

This book annoyed me at the start because the nicknames felt forced. I wish it had started with their meeting instead. It wouldn't have hurt to have a little meat to their relationship, but that wasn't present in this book.
