GZG: The Zombie Gym #1

Rate this book
It's not easy being the flabby guy amid a sea of gorgeous hunks. And it certainly doesn't help when your ex-boyfriend's new man is practically perfect. But things are finally changing for Bryan… Dr. Festus promises his new formula will help the socially-awkward professor achieve the perfect muscle-bound body. It couldn't come at a better time; all of the men at Bryan's new gym look like they've stepped out of a men's fitness magazine. Meanwhile, Bryan's archeologist colleague Judy Love has discovered some ancient Roman artifacts that just may change life as we know it. But is it all too good to be true? And what happens when you mix ancient prophecies with protein powders?

From Scotty Mullen, screenwriter of THE COED AND THE ZOMBIE STONER produced by The Asylum (SHARKNADO), this new series will make you realize there is a legitimate reason you are scared of going to the gym.

A gay guy becomes part of an experimental drug program that will give him a body of…um…death so he can win his ex-boyfriend back. Sure GZG takes on the obsession with male perfection of which the gay community is constantly being accused, but it’s done with horror, sex, and humor (my favorite kind of gay horror fiction).

Book 1 is just the beginning of this tale of gym zombunnies. We won’t see the complete transformation until Book 2, because things just start getting gruesome before the pretty literal cliffhanger! Being a fan of the indie horror comedy film The Coed and The Zombie Stoner, which author Scotty Mullen wrote, I can’t wait to read the rest of his GZG series.

So did you hear that Jane Fonda’s original work outs are being released on DVD?

What, you may ask, does a Jane Fonda workout DVD have to do with the first in Scotty Mullen’s Gay Zombie Gym Series? Um…everything!

Like a flashback to all things wonderful from the 80’s, Mullen has created a delightful, creepy, campy, sexy ride, reminiscent of Evil Dead, Night of the Comet, Fright Night and the underappreciated Fright Night 2. He’s even channeled some of the neurosis many of us still struggle with as a result of our high school years during the decade.

Bryan, an unappreciated bear trapped in a world of gym bunnies and jocks, struggles with his self-image. He’s watched his childhood best friend and one-time lover abandon him for someone in better shape and much more confident. He’s literally had the door closed on him by the gay community because of his size and lack of confidence.

So what’s a flubby assistant history professor to do? Why, sign up for a medical experiment lead by one of the campus’s most mysterious professors, of course! With the help of injections, shakes and trips to a local gym, Bryan begins a transformation that will not only change his body but his life and the lives of those close to him as well.

Mullen has created an interesting, relatable cast of characters and has enough plot twists that you can guess at but not quite tell where the series is headed. He’s also got a great eye for the visual and a solid mastery of pacing. This could easily read as the first act of a screenplay.

It’s a lot of fun and I’m intrigued to see where Mullen takes Bryan and his friends next.

This was a compelling read. Highly creative and original, the storyline combined impending astronomical events with the prophecies of ancient Greece to set the stage for a truly terrifying modern day apocolypse.

The only thing keeping this book from a 5 star rating was the mother of all cliffhangers, which I wasn't expecting. This book offers no resolution on it's own and requires a sequel to complete the story. What's worse than that is that the sequel is currently unavailable with no release date in sight.

On a positive note, the only reason I'm so miffed that the sequel is unvailable is because I can't wait to get my hands on it! Being left wanting more is never a bad thing. I just hope this story is still on my radar when the sequel is finally released.
