Beauty and the Beast meets Crimson Peak in this gothic tale that is as much a love story as it is a story of vengeance.
Corabeth isn't living, she's surviving. In a cursed village, surrounded by misty woods, she is the black sheep, hated for her mother's crimes. When her neighbors turn against her during the Night of the Beast—a night that comes once every thirty-three years, unleashing the Beast upon the village—she is left with nothing but a hunger for revenge.
Rooke, a cursed man turned monster, is a pendulum that swings between bloodthirst and his half-forgotten humanity. Stuck in a cycle, he either needs to break the curse or remain a monster forever.
Fate brings these two together, offering them unexpected solace in one another. But as morality blurs and love teeters on the edge of obsession, Corabeth and Rooke must decide how far they are prepared to go—and what they are willing to lose—to get vengeance and break the curse.
The perfect, quick little spooky-season read that delivers immaculate gothic-horror vibes through its atmospheric and eerie prose. While it may be short, This Hunger of Ours packs a punch, telling a story of feminine rage, vengeance, and romance. For a book with less than 200 pages, the pacing and character growth demonstrated throughout the story is impressive. The relationship between Corabeth and Rooke felt fully fleshed out and well developed, and I didn’t know I needed an allies-to-unhinged-lovers romance until I read this one.
If you’re looking for a book that is going to launch you into your spooky season TBR, this is the one!
Thank you NetGalley and T. Pyre for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
I am a sucker for a beauty and the beast retelling and this didn’t disappoint. A perfect name for this debut because I stayed up all night devouring this. Rooke and Corabeth perfectly complement each other. Feminine rage and a brilliant plot twist make this retelling memorable. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advanced copy.
I absolutely devoured this novella and could not put it down from the second I started it.
From the first chapter, I was gripped. This is a gothic Beauty & the Beast retelling that brings in the perfect amount of revenge and strong characters.
I fell in love with the characters (including the ravens). I was so invested in Corabeth and Rooke's relationship that I felt like a third wheel in the best way possible, in that I felt immersed in the story and their relationship, as if I was right there with them. Corabeth, our FMC, is simultaneously vulnerable yet strong and independent. She knows what she wants, and she wants revenge. Rooke, the 'Beast,' is the known and loved 'rough outside, soft inside' with a heart of gold (for Corabeth). Their characters are incredibly complex and richly developed, including their families, personal stories, feelings, and motivations. They're dynamic and independent yet connected. I loved how it wasn't just a 'big guy saves the damsel' story - no, Corabeth is set on not only getting revenge for herself and to avenge her mother, but also to help Rooke. After all, HE is HER weapon. I loved the personalities of Rooke and Corabeth, and there's also humor interweaved in the gothic atmosphere in a way that fits without taking the reader out of the story!
The revenge arc and overall plot in this story is incredible, as is the romance, and I could not take my eyes off the page. It is quick moving, which I loved, yet at the same time everything has the perfect amount of detail, description, and development. I could imagine everything from the setting to the characters. For a novella, this can be hard to do, but Pyre proved it can be done! There is neither too much nor too little of anything, in my opinion. One of my favorite parts of the story was coming to understand the curse surrounding Rooke and the village, along with Corabeth's family/mother's history. There were unique details and circumstances that made it a fresh take on a curse story!
Corabeth's desire to get revenge on the people who have hurt her, her mother, and others is impactful, especially through the lens of addressing specific types of violence (check TW). The way Corabeth addresses these issues continuously at the end of the story is something I really appreciated, too. As for the romance, it built in such a great way. It felt genuine and real, not insta-love or shallow. I could truly tell that the characters felt and cared for each other.
I was so impressed by the writing! It is beautiful and skillful, and I have so many highlighted sections. There are details, symbolism, and resonant 'reveals' (character motivations, beliefs, values, etc.) found in the prose without it being heavy-handed or too overt. Also, to mention it again, the humor was written in perfectly!
As for the plot twist. . . I could never have seen it coming, and I absolutely loved that! I was walking while reading this (because I mean it when I say I couldn't put it down) and physically stopped when I got to that point. Perfect, no notes.
As a final note, the structure was something I loved, too! For most of the novella, the chapters are told from Corabeth's POV, but getting a few chapters from Rooke engaged me even more in the story as a whole because we got to more context for his perspective and feelings.
I usually have some aspects of a story that were 'just okay' for me, but I genuinely don't have anything to add there for this novella. This is not a story I'll forget, and I'm just sad that the author doesn't have more I can read!
I would recommend this to everyone - it is no doubt one of my favorite reads of the year!
Bonus: gorgeous character art at the end!

if you’re a lover of horror/thrillers or are getting the mood ready for spooky szn, then STOP!✋🏽 and add this book to your tbr, right now!🏃🏼♀️
‘this hunger of ours’ is a morbidly, dark, beauty & the beast retelling. our beast is cursed and allowed free roam of the village once every 33 years in order to attempt to break the curse.
the village are boarding up their homes and making sure to steer clear of the forrest at all times…only this time when the beast lurks the village, he is taken aback by corabeth. she isn’t caged in her home like everyone else, she is sat weeping…
though afraid, corabeth has nothing left to live for, she wants to embrace death, except, even ‘death’ doesn’t want to take her.
the relationship that builds up between corabeth & the beast is beautiful, despite the darkness lurking within. he is protective, passionate & strong willed when it comes to her. plus the added spice is veryyyy nice😮💨.
if you touch her, you will regret it. as it is other’s cruelty that had turned them into the monsters, the village very much speak of.
the twists and turns in this actually had me gasping, i was too engrossed in the storyline to even attempt a guess at how things would play out. but i definitely wasn’t expecting what went down…😅
this was a really enjoyable, easy read but it is DARK & morbid, so please be sure to check your triggers before going in as there are some very triggering subjects from the get go.

From all the Beauty & The Beast retellings I've read and watched, I think this is the version that, while it still incorporates the same elements from the tale (fmc that is ostracized by her village x cursed beast), the author also managed to add a new touch to the story.
Normally you see the fmc going to the Beast to rescue her father/family and then the creature makes some bargain where she ends up being his recluse. In this case you have the fmc going to the Beast with solely one purpose: revenge.
When it comes to starting a book it usually takes me DAYS to go through the first 20% of the story, but by the end of the first day of reading This Hunger of Ours I was already at 30% of the story (i say this while I pat my back).
I devoured this book, I love me a good goth romantasy where the fictional couple is the portrait of Life and Death and you get to witness how much they complement eachother, like a cycle.
Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing me with an eARC.
This was a somewhat gory retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The retelling was nice but to some extent I found the base story to be heavily unchanged. I did like how the ending was executed -- that was definitely a nice twist. This is probably my fault but at the beginning of the story I somehow imagined Corabeth to be quite young. I'm unsure if the timeline got updated much later but the spicy scenes threw me off big time because of the way I had pictured her. I also liked Corabeth's character transition from always bearing pain to initiating revenge. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a short horror retelling of Beauty and a Beast with a twist in the ending.
I’ve been craving a gothic horror romance as spooky season approaches, and this story delivered exactly what I was looking for! This combines Beauty and the Beast with the raw feminine rage of Slewfoot, I devoured it in 24 hours!
We follow Corabeth, a woman shunned by her village because of her mother’s past crimes. Her home sits on the edge of a cursed forest, where a Beast has terrorized their people for generations. Every 33 years, on one dreaded night, the Beast prowls freely, and while her neighbors hide behind locked doors, Corabeth is left defenseless.
The Beast, a cursed man, who just wants to break the cycle of the curse he has been trapped in for centuries stumbles across Corabeth and together they team up to break the curse and get their revenge.
Despite its shorter length, the romance between Corabeth and the Beast unfolds naturally, with plenty of space to breathe and grow. Their tenderness toward one another contrasts beautifully with their dark, vengeful sides, making their relationship both haunting and beautiful. And the spice was immaculate, never gratuitous but instead it felt beautiful and natural.
If you’re looking for a dark, atmospheric love story where the MMC is more than willing to burn the world down for his beloved, this book is absolutely for you.
Thank you to NetGalley to for the arc in exchange for honest feedback.
Finally a fresh breath of air by way of a strong, willful and honest FMC with real feelings and agendas. The sense of a classic fairy tale covered by a veil of darkness tiptoeing on exactly the right balance between classy and sexy. Was hooked.
It was a fun little novella based on beauty and the beast. I do feel like this could've benefited more from being longer. I would loved to have a more in depth description of the village, the life there and sometimes just the "why" of certain things. Now due to the lack of explanation it felt like things just happened because of plot relevance and it didn't always feel like a natural progression of things.
The one thing that puzzled me the most was the hesitance of 'taking animals to their death.' as I can imagine in some sort of medieval village animals were mostly seen as food and slaughtered all the time. And they talked about it like they would never slaughter their animals themselves for food.
The plottwist was not surprising at all and I think necessary for a happy ending. I love emotional damage in my media so I would also have been content with another ending But honestly, for the amount of time it took me to read this it was a fun, quick read .
Thanks to Netgalley and the author for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Beauty and the beast retelling. Gothic romance. Revenge. Loved it all.
Corabeth was dealt a crap hand in life. People in her village were actually horrible. But she’s a great character. There was no whiny damsel in distress. She was strong and knew what she wanted.
Rooke was great. I loved him. Dark, broody. But he adores Corabeth. I loved how he read to her.
This was a beautiful story. The twist at the end was great. And I didn’t see it coming at all. The ending also made me sad. I was both happy and sad for them. But glad they got to be with each other at the end.

This quick and easy read was a great introduction to the spooky season of 2025. At least the first half reads very much like a questline of a Witcher game - a similarity of tone and ambiance, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It has all the key components one would hope to find in a story like this - a seemingly endless curse, spiteful villagers acting either from malice or ignorance, a woman who finds herself drawn to the monster despite every instinct telling her to stay away. And while there is no silver sword wielding monster hunter in this story, there are other ways to break a curse. Perhaps I drew too many parallels due to being on a Witcher kick lately, but I digress.
There was a cheeky chapter or two of spice - explicit enough to stand out but never gratuitous. It found a good balance, adding heat that helped the culmination of their relationship feel more earned and complete.
Overall I’d have liked to see a little more character development and with it more length to the story. I was hoping for a slightly different ending, but the direction it took still worked out nevertheless.
I’m glad to have gotten the chance to read the advance copy of T. Pyre’s debut novel. More, please.
Wanting to get back into my gothic fiction so picked this up on KU having seen posts on TikTok from the author 🥀 I will always love a beauty and the beast retelling and this did not disappoint, I was hooked from the get go (bare in mind, it is a dark retelling) an amazing debut!! 🖤
'This Hunger Of Ours' is a story about revenge, female rage and the love of two people who needed each other in more ways than one.
Both characters, just as morally grey as each other, show how easy it is to find light even in the darkest of times. The back and forth between the sweet serenity of their time together in the mansion and the absolute brutality of the darker parts of the story made this a very satisfying and cathartic read.
The ending was definitely not what I was expecting but was also a perfect fit for these characters.
A perfect spooky season read!
Please check trigger warnings before reading the book. This book is dark and your mental health matters more than anything. 🙏🏻

Thank you so much to T. Pyre and Netgalley for the ARC approval. It was an amazing opportunity to read this story early.
What an incredible debut! I enjoyed this the entire way through. Felt all the emotions and was captivated by the plot.
This is so much like Beauty and the Beast, a movie that is nostalgic and holds a special place in my heart. But this version is uniquely its own with a dark twist. It's filled with the need for revenge, to break a centuries long curse and fulfill true love happily ever after by whatever means necessary.
We all know how the movie goes but the Beast has Vampire tendencies and feeds on the Night of The Beast every 33 years. There are many trigger warnings but it's not all dark and gruesome. I found this beautifully written and I highly recommend reading this in October.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for an arc copy, all opinions are my own.
Perfect gothic, spooky, haunting retelling of Beauty and the Beast. For a debut novella, it was very well written and captured an atmospheric and eerie vibe perfectly. I felt like I was so immersed in the book that I was in a movie. I could not put it down; I stayed up all night reading this.
Tropes:
Gothic romantasy Beauty and the Beast retelling Morally grey characters Cursed MMC Female rage Unhinged Yearing Slow burn Revenge
Fell in love with Corabeth and Rooke instantly. Their relationship was soft and beautiful and such a breath of fresh air from the typical enemies to lovers we usually see in fantasy.
The gothic vibes were everything and portrayed so well through the descriptions.
Corabeth is also such a good example of a strong FMC who is also soft, I absolutely loved her.
I wish it was longer! Would have loved more time with the developing relationship between the two.
This Hunger of Ours is a gothic romance that blends elements of Beauty and the Beast and Crimson Peak. Set in a cursed village surrounded by misty woods, Corabeth is the protagonist.
I read it on NetGalley through an Advanced Reader Copy, and I have to say… I absolutely loved it. This type of novel—a mix of gothic horror and romance—is exactly the kind of story I enjoy.
The author’s writing keeps you completely hooked. You can’t help but keep reading, captivated by the atmosphere, the character development, and the evolution of the romance. Corabeth will burn the world for her love. Usually, in romance, it’s the man who does that—but here, the female protagonist takes center stage in all her intensity.
The setting is phenomenal: the “Night of the Beast,” the cursed forest, the fog, the surrounding villages… everything is crafted to immerse you in this hauntingly beautiful world. The way the story is told, the depth of the characters, the romance—it’s all just perfect.
I loved it. Absolutely loved it. And with the spooky season coming up, this book is a must-read. Add it to your TBR—you won’t regret it! 🖤🌙💀
There are so many things I want to say about this book that I'm almost overwhelmed. This novel completely blew me away! I felt as if I were being transported right into the world of Corabeth and Rooke, and standing right beside them as their relationship blossomed. Not only did I fall in love with them as a unit, but also as individual characters. Corabeth, the embodiment of feminine rage, was such a dynamic FMC. Even in her darkest moments, you wanted to root for her. It felt amazing to watch the injustices against her be paid for, and I'm so glad the author didn't have her take the moral high ground of forgiveness (as awful as that sounds). Not only that, to watch her be loved and cared for by Rooke after witnessing such tragedies felt so comforting and right. Rooke's coolness was the PERFECT counterpart to Corabeth's flame. A misunderstood beast with the heart of a gentle giant. The way he emotionally nursed Corabeth back to health, even while dealing with his own insatiable hunger made for such a unique dynamic. Watching him turn from the monster the village despised, into the monster Corabeth needed had my heart skipping several beats. These two are a couple I will be thinking about for a very long time. As someone who normally detests slow burns, this was one that kept my attention from the first to the last page, and every tender moment in between. I absolutely will be picking up a physical copy on pub day! Thank you SO much to T. Pyre and netgalley for the ARC!
Corabeth's life is hard, but so is everyone else's - but she's alone, she's hated in the village due to her circumstances and now things are getting even worse for her as she's left outside alone during the Night of the Beast.
I really enjoyed this book - the writing style flows well, you're just kind of flying through without even noticing time passing around you. But it's so much fun to read because the book is so well written! It's a light little spooky read, the setting being misty and cold and so often lonely is very well done. The descriptions of the village are great, the atmosphere is just so bleak and grey, just like the people living there. Everyone is suffering. Perfect for an autumn read!
The book is pretty short, just ~150 pages, so you can really fly through, but that said, the story is very well paced. There's no dull moments, everything is needed for the story to continue and even the romance was included nicely. And I just liked where the plot went and how it was set up - I've never read a Beauty and Beast retelling and if I'm honest, until halfway through I forgot that's what I'm reading.. I just enjoyed the story. You do get that sense of dejavu midway through though and that in its very own setting. I'm still surprised at how well it worked, it's similar but it's not. Really nicely done.
There's a lot of character development, both main characters have pretty rough starting points but things work out and we're going right into the darker parts of the story. Finally the plot twist - yes, maybe a little foreseeable, but that doesn't hurt the story one bit. I'm glad this is the route the author chose because ugh.. You know where it's going as you're reading. Can't give things away now though! I love the ending though.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and I felt for those characters. I'd definitively recommend this book to anyone in the mood for something different, something a little dark that still has it's happy lovey moments.

What if the monster wasn’t your end, but your salvation? 🌙
📖 This Hunger of Ours by T. Pyre ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 🌶️🌶️ Genre: gothic romantasy TW: Attempted sexual assault, violence, abuse, depictions of depression and suicidal thoughts, gore, animal death
Corabeth is the black sheep of her village, treated with cruelty and contempt all her life. On the Night of the Beast—a curse that returns every 33 years when a monster emerges from the woods to hunt—her house is burned down. Broken and hopeless, she walks into the forest ready for death. But instead of killing her, the Beast offers her shelter, warmth, and kindness. What begins as an unexpected companionship turns into a shared mission: breaking his curse together.
I was completely enthralled by this book. The gothic atmosphere was perfection, dark and haunting yet tender at its core. Corabeth’s pain and depression were palpable, and it made me furious at how the villagers treated her. But then came the Beast—gentle, thoughtful, and protective. The way he saw her as a flower waiting to bloom, the way he cooked and read to her each night… I fell for him instantly.
The romance was slow, aching, and deeply moving. I wanted to linger forever in their mansion in the woods, far away from everyone else. The ending was bittersweet—I cried—but it stayed with me long after. For such a short novella, this book carried so much weight and heart.
Thank you NetGalley and T. Pyre for this ARC.
Tropes: 🌹 Beauty and the Beast retelling 🏰 Crimson Peak vibes 🐺 Beast x human ⏳ Cursed MMC 🔥 Feminine rage ✨ Slow burn 🗡 Revenge
I read this on the author’s own recommendation, and I’m really glad I picked it up. Right from the start, the writing totally pulled me in. It’s so descriptive and atmospheric that I felt like I’d stepped straight into this dark, gothic little world. It had exactly the kind of moody, eerie thing I was looking for.
The characters were great, Corabeth especially. I’ll always love a bad bitch who’s a little bit fucked up, and she scratched that itch perfectly. The romance was genuinely sweet too, a nice balance to all the dark themes. I also liked the ending, it was really satisfying and a nice reflection of what Corabeth wanted from her stories. I tried to guess what the big twist would be but I didn’t see it coming at all!
If I could change one thing, I honestly just would’ve loved it to have been longer, but not in an ass kissing way. There were a few spots where things moved a little quickly, and I found myself wanting to linger with the characters and really soak in their thoughts and feelings. It wasn’t constant, and sometimes the pacing was done well, but occasionally it just felt like we were moving on from things a bit too quickly and things were happening in quite quick succession.
Even so, this was a really strong and memorable debut. Beautiful writing, a compelling atmosphere, characters who stick with you. I’m really glad I read it, and I’m excited to see whatever the author does next.
This is a great short, gothic read, retelling the story of beauty and the beast, whilst giving me Dracula vibes.
What a creepy read, that packed a punch, gave all the emotions, and a bucket load of gothic vibes ready for autumn!
You follow Corabeth, a young woman who has lived through heartbreak and ill treatment, following the unjust death of her mother, in a village which treats her as if she is a witch. During a particularly terrible day, she is caught outside at night as the Beast lurks for its next pray. The story follow an unlikely relationship, bonded through bloody, revenge and love.
I picked this book up by pure chance through seeing an instagram post, and heading over to NetGalley to get an early copy. I was really pleasantly surprised with Erie yet very well written gothic retelling. It had a great balance of detail considering it was a short read, and really did just justice to the characters which left you hooked on the seeking of revenge.
This is probably one of the most surprising books I've read this year! Such an amazing story told in a short novella!
A Beauty and the Beast retelling with a dark, gothic twist. Whilst this may be a short read, it absolutely hits the same as a fully packed out novel. Revenge, feminine rage, a hauntingly beautiful close proximity romance. I. Loved. It!
A darkly atmospheric story of two desperate, lonely and tortured individuals meeting under the most unlikeliest of circumstances and finding what they didn't even know they were seeking, in each other. They will burn the world down together 🔥
Please put this on your tbr, it is perfect for 'spooky season' 🖤
Also, that ending...😭
As with all books, especially ones with darker undertones, I highly suggest checking your trigger warnings first.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the eARC.
“What was a person to do when everyone in this world, even death, denied her?”
This book is one of the most stunning debut stories that I have read in ages🖤 A brilliant gothic romance with that unsettling but beautiful nature throughout. We follow Corabeth, a mistreated young woman who is continuously bullied by her neighbours. After being left in the cold to die, she begs a beast to end her life. But he refuses. I want to talk continuously but I really don’t want to spoil anything. If you liked: One dark window, Belladonna, and Bitterthorn, then this is the book for you. I can’t recommend this enough. Truly, if you want to read something perfect for the cold whether with a heartbreaking and heart building romance then take the leap and read this immediately✨🖤
🐐I read an ARC of this book and am leaving an honest review voluntarily🐐
I don’t know where to even begin because I’m not good with words and whatever kind of praise I could write would not do this book justice. You just have to read it yourself.
Beautiful and haunting, leaves you wanting more and yet ends in a perfect way and gives you closure like a cherry on top.
I absolutely love the way it’s written. The author describes everything so beautifully and I truly feel like I lived inside the book alongside the characters.
For someone like me who doesn’t read a lot of horror, This Hunger of Ours ticked every box I could ever think of and more.
The only sad thing about it is that this is T.Pyre’s debut and now I have nothing else of the author’s to devour.
4,5/5 stars. Thank you so much to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and NetGalley for the eArc!
A quick, wickedly satisfying gothic horror romance that takes a familiar tale (Beauty and the Beast) and turns it into something dark, adult, and absolutely “good-for-her” in the end.
Under 200 pages, yet perfectly paced with surprising character growth; both leads are deliciously morally grey, and their slow-burn romance is chef’s kiss - and yes, the MMC is a man who’s unafraid to show devotion and emotion. That ending… gods, I wasn’t ready for that, and yes, it left me a little teary-eyed.
Honestly, I need a prequel - I have to know more about the curse!
This was a quick read, and an effortlessly flowing one. I finished in less than a day. Perhaps it was so quick because I couldn’t be brought to put it down. Rooke and Corabeth were so divinely portrayed, each a broken piece of a morbid but beautifully told romantic puzzle. The way she was able to tame this beast of a man, and have him yearn was simply infatuating. Definitely one I would and will recommend to a friend.
“You do not need to plead,” he said, “It is I who should be on my knees before my mistress.” True to his word, Rooke dropped to his knees beside the bed.
It was so devastatingly beautiful that she had him on his knees during life, and even in the end mourning the loss of it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
this book was very cathartic. it is a dark fairy tale romance similar to beauty and the beast if belle decided all the villagers who treated her poorly needed to die. it was nice to finally have a heroine who didn't just let her lifelong mistreatment fade away for a happy ending, her getting revenge is very integral to her happy ending. It was pretty fast paced and the romance was actually kind of soft and cute except for the moments where it was dark and bloody. definitely recommend for fans of gothic romance and revenge fantasies.
